Surely, She Ain’t Serious
Chapter 1
Cid stood at the helm of the airship, steering it absent-mindedly now that everything was over and done with. Meteor had been destroyed, thanks to the emergence of the Lifestream and he knew that now, things would settle back into their norm-- and he wasn’t well for that.
It meant that he’d have to head back home to Rocket, back to the house that he shared with Shera, his fellow former Shinra employee. They weren’t romantically involved, they never had been. She only lived with him by virtue of the fact that no one else in Rocket would rent her a place since she was generally blamed by the townsfolk for the termination of the space program. Although Cid probably had held the biggest beef with her about that, he still hadn’t been able to turn her away once he found out that she was living in her car when her lease at her apartment ran out.
Hopefully now, though, Shera would be able to move on. The fact that the space program’s death was no longer blamed on her-- she had, after all, saved the famed Captain Highwind’s life-- would count for something.
Then there would be the fifteen minutes of fame bit. Then again, everyone in Rocket had known who he was for years, and always having been somewhat of a local celebrity, surely it wouldn’t effect his life all that much. He was used to the spotlight and knew how to tune it out.
Of course, that thought made him pity others like Vincent, who wouldn’t handle any level of fame well at all. He figured that the former Turk would just slink off into the shadows once the airship came to a rest, never to be heard from again, or maybe he would, hell, Cid didn’t know. Vincent was an enigma.
The pilot sighed to himself as he scanned over everyone that was present in the bridge, milling about in some sort of relieved or reverent silence. They would all go their own separate ways come morning and he knew that he’d miss some of them.
For instance, there was Barrett. They had spent several hours together in the conference room, when the younger, and giddier members of the group got to be too much. They would sit there alone, shooting the breeze or playing cards. Yeah, Barrett was an all right guy.
Yuffie he wouldn’t miss. She’d stolen his favorite lighter of all things, and there had been more than one occasion when he’d noticed that his precious flight goggles were missing, only to later spot them hanging off of the ninja’s belt as some sort of trophy. This thought prompted him to reach up and make sure that they were in place. They were.
Cloud. Well, Cid was proud of that boy. He’d done all right in the end, even despite his somewhat whiney and immature nature. Then again, the boy had fallen in love just to watch said girl’s life snuffed out by Sephiroth. Cid figured that the former SOLDIER was therein justified in his angst.
Nanaki-- good people, or well, good whatever in the fuck he was. Cid wasn’t really sure, but the cat had come through and had saved his ass on the battlefield more than once, and that made him all right in the pilot’s book.
Cait Sith. Cid held no particular sentiments for what amounted to a puppet. Reeve, on the other hand was, in the end, a stand up guy. That counted for something.
Then, there was Tifa. Cid examined her as she stood apart from the others, looking pensive. He felt bad for her. She was in love with Cloud, but the boy didn’t get it. They were just friends, and would only just be friends. Cid had a good idea that despite this, she would ultimately cling to the boy, probably following him back to Midgar or whatever. It was sad. A waste. A smile came to his lips as he thought about the fact that he was well over a decade older than the girl. If it hadn’t been for that, he knew he would have probably tried all of his old, and somewhat lame, pick up lines on her. Tifa was friendly to him, though and that was flattering. Very flattering. She would joke with him, usually quipping, "You’re terrible, Cid," at him when he dared to taunt or curse at someone. He liked her. Hell, he really liked her. His luck, though, probably meant that she looked up to him in some sort of weird, ‘fatherly’ way. A shame, really.
Tifa seemed to feel the weight of his gaze and turned to look over at him. She offered him a faint smile before walking over, leaving the others to their own devices. There seemed to be something on Cid’s mind, and she figured she might as well see what was up. "Hey."
He pulled the half-smoked cigarette from his lips and flicked some ashes onto the floor. "Hey yerself."
"So, I guess we did it, huh?" Tifa clasped her hands behind her back, a move that unintentionally thrust out her chest, making Cid immediately blush.
The pilot nodded and looked away from her, making a conscious effort not to stare. "Yeah, guess so."
"Are we staying on the ship tonight?" she asked, trying to make conversation.
"Yeah." Cid brought the cigarette back to his lips and took a long drag. "It’s pretty damn late."
Tifa’s heart was feeling a little heavy since she knew she’d miss everyone. "Good, that way we can say our good byes in the morning."
"I suppose." Cid motioned over toward Vincent. "Except for him. You know he’s bailin’ as soon as this bucket comes to a stop. We ain’t gonna see him again."
Tifa figured he could be right. "I don’t know, I’ve talked to him some. I think he feels that there is something out there for him to do. Plus, he’s said that if things ever got bad, he’d be there to help out."
The fact that she’d gotten so much out of the silent gunslinger impressed him. "He said all that?"
"Sure," Tifa said back, clearly proud of herself, "he’s actually a really sweet guy. It took me a while to get through his shell, but there’s apparently nothing that a lot of patience and some free candy can’t conquer."
Cid wasn’t quite sure if by ‘free candy’ she actually meant free candy, or something perhaps inappropriate. "Come again?"
Tifa giggled and reached over, poking Cid in the shoulder. "Free candy, Cid. He’s a chocoholic. I’d go hang out with him up on deck sometimes and split a candy bar with him. He opened up a little after a while."
The pilot felt a hint of a blush come to his weathered cheeks. "Oh, okay."
"What, did you think I meant that I did something bad?" Tifa shoved him playfully.
Cid grinned and shook his head. "Naw, I didn’t think you would, that’s why I was confused. He’s probably too damn old for you anyway."
"He was only twenty-seven when he was put in stasis. That still makes him twenty-seven, right?" Tifa knit her brow and met his gaze.
"Somethin’ like that." Cid shrugged.
"But, to be fair, twenty-seven isn’t too old for me."
Cid figured it was worth a shot. "So, what is too old for you, then?"
Tifa giggled again and smirked. "Why, you interested?"
This wasn’t exactly where the pilot had though she’d take the conversation, but he was going to play along. "What if I was?"
Not entirely sure if Cid was joking or not, Tifa opted for honestly. "You know I like you, Cid."
"Yeah, like a dad or some shit, right?" Cid dropped his gaze away from her, knowing that he was getting close to the danger zone.
Tifa now blushed and began to fidget with the end of her ponytail. "No…not like that, really. You’ve just got that confident pilot thing going on, you know? That’s sexy."
Cid broke into a wide smile and flicked the rest of his cigarette off to the deck, deciding that she was just teasing him. "Yeah, right. You wouldn’t in a million years."
Tifa cocked and eyebrow and offered him a devilish smile before turning away. "I just might, you never know…"
Cid watched her retreat and swallowed hard. Maybe she wasn’t joking.
