Disclaimer: I do not own Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
~ The story wouldn’t be complete if they don’t write something in Cloud’s point of view. And although I believe that ‘The Case of Cloud’ will be released by Square-Enix soon, I decided to come up with my own version. (Scratch this, Square probably won’t release anything of the sort! ^_^) This is ‘THE CASE OF CLOUD’, in my mind. Enjoy! ~
FINAL FANTASY VII: ON THE WAY TO A SMILE: THE CASE OF CLOUD

It’s going to rain.
Again. I never did like rain, and I doubt I ever will. It makes me feel nostalgic, and I hate feeling that way. Dredges up things that should belong to the past—my past.
If only I could tell myself that, over and over again.
I wonder how Tifa and the kids are doing.
As if echoing my thoughts, my mobile phone started ringing. I ignored it, and focused my attention on the road as I guided Fenrir through it. One should always be on guard. Many monsters are still on the loose, and…
“Beep, beep, beep, beep…”
The persistent ringing just wouldn’t let up. I sighed as I searched through my pockets to fish the phone out. Covering it with my sleeves, I flipped it open to reveal the name of my caller.
‘Home’ was flashing above the picture of Tifa and the two kids.
‘Tifa…’
I resisted the urge to press that tiny button that would allow me to talk to her, just as I had a hundred times before, to my mind. But I kept on holding onto my phone until the answering machine picked it up. After the beep, I heard her voice.
“Cloud, it’s me. I hope you still remember who I am,”
A little laugh, and then silence. Then her voice became gratingly cheerful.
“Anyway, I just wanted you to know about what’s going on with us. The kids are fine, and Denzel’s not having much of his attacks. He’s been teaching Marlene to read and write. Remember all those words you taught them? I think they could even spell those backwards,”
She laughed once more, the sound of it so pure and infectious that I couldn’t help but smile a little in response.
I remember: I never used to smile. It seems to me I only smile when I’m with Tifa...
“And then I bought them some colored pencils just the other day so they could draw. Don’t tell Denzel, okay? But I think Marlene’s more of an artist than he is. I think he knows it too, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. Stubborn and tenacious, that’s our Denzel. I think he must’ve gotten it from y—”
She abruptly stopped what she was going to say, though I had a pretty good idea what it was.
“Umm, where was I? Oh yes, the drawings! Marlene’s been drawing like crazy since the other day. I suggested for them to pin their drawings in their bedroom walls, and it already looks like they’ve wallpapered it. But Denzel assures me that they’re just going to choose what they’re going to leave on the walls and take everything else down. Later this day, Marlene showed me a picture of us. But not together, she said. She drew us separately. She said it’s because that’s the way we are right now. Isn’t it funny?”
She tried to laugh, I know she did, but all that came out was a small sob.
“Anyway, everyone called today. Yuffie was first, and she’s been asking about you. I gave her your number ‘coz she said she had some questions for you. Nanaki’s with Reeve, they called after lunch. Reeve also asked for your number saying he has a business proposition for you. I think he’s just going to try and recruit you in WRO… again,”
A small giggle came out, then a hiccup.
“Cid also called, he said he’s working on his new model. Sierra says hi too. And last but not the least, Barett called just before dinner. After talking to Marlene, he told me not to worry about him and just worry about our ‘family’. He also told me to tell you to answer your ‘friggin’ phone’. Those are his exact words! Vincent didn’t call, but I know it’s not because he forgot. I’m thinking he doesn’t have a cellphone like normal people do. Typical of him, don’t you think?”
She giggled again, followed by another hiccup. With that, I’m sure she’s been drinking. Or better yet, on her way to getting drunk.
“The kids and I had dinner together. Denzel was fine today, so he got to join Marlene and me. It was nothing fancy, just our usual fare. Marlene wanted to bake a cake, but you know how it is right now. Not enough ingredients for that one. And then they both gave me one of their ‘masterpieces’,”
Another giggle, and though I know I should probably be amused, I had the opposite reaction. I was frowning fiercely at my phone now, waiting for what she was going to say next.
“I’m putting it in my collection. Hey, do you remember last year, Cloud? It was just Marlene, me and you back then. But we had lots of fun, didn’t we? We had a cake back then, I remember. All thanks to you. And then you showed up with a bunch of flowers. Marlene was so excited she went and got the camera to take pictures. Most of the shots were too close, others too far and either one of us has our head chopped off in others. But I still think they’re wonderful. Those were the good times hmm? I kept them,”
Her voice sounded wistful, and I stared at the phone in my hand as memories came flooding back.
Good thing Fenrir has auto-cruise mode.
“I even kept the flowers, Cloud. Remember how I was determined to keep them alive? You told me not to bother, that it’s going to die anyway. You said you’ll just bring new ones back home. But I didn’t listen, did I? I did everything I could to make them last longer. And they lasted for almost three weeks. When they were about to die, I secretly got one of your thick logbooks and carefully pinned them between the pages so they’d dry. That’s how I was able to save them. Not just a memory, you see?”
Something about the way she said that made me think…
“Anyway, I’m rambling. Sorry. I tucked in the kids goodnight a while ago, and I’m here in our—ooopps, your room, I mean. I hope you don’t mind me sleeping in your bed when you’re not here. And I’m drinking wine. Alone. Doesn’t that beat all?”
She giggled again, and the sound of something crashing to the ground could be heard.
“Ouch! That hurt. Sorry about that, the phone fell. So how about you, Cloud? How are you doing these days? I hope you’re okay… and safe. It’s funny how I have to rely on what others tell me just so I’d know you’re still alive, when we’re just a phone call away. Johnny told me he saw you pass by last week. You were so close, Cloud. Couldn’t you have bothered to see us?”
Silence.
I gripped my phone so tightly I could feel it digging in my hand.
“I’m sorry for lecturing you. I didn’t mean that. I just… the kids miss you, Cloud. Denzel mostly. I’m starting to fumble for something to say every time they ask me where you are and when you’re going back home. This is still your home, isn’t it? Please pick up the phone,”
She waited for me to pick it up just as I waited for her to get tired of waiting and hang up.
“Onegai, Cloud. I don’t even get to hear your voice anymore, and I need something even as small as that. We need you. I—”
The sound of her breathing deeply could be heard. I was just about to press the talk button when she spoke again.
“I guess what I’m trying to say here is that… I miss you. And if you’re not too busy, then maybe you could come see us? Or just call, Cloud. Anything. Please? Oh, and it’s my birthday today. I just thought you should know,”
Click.
I kept staring at my phone even after Tifa’s call ended. A great part of me regretted not having had enough courage to talk to her. Of course I knew it was her birthday! I even know when Marlene was born.
I share her memories. I’ve been with her for the longest time than anyone else. They are my family.
And if I’m going to be completely honest with myself, I’m being an asshole.
No, I told myself as I shook my head and put my cell phone back to its’ hiding place. I then resumed my control on Fenrir and continued driving. It’s better this way. They just have to get used to not having me around now, rather than later. It would just hurt them more.
It’s better for them to think that I don’t care…
When the truth is, I care too much.
Three months, one week and five days. That’s the last time I saw my family…
