Zack stirred and groaned as his alarm went off, completely ignoring his mothers shouts from downstairs claiming he’d be late if he didn’t get his arse out of his pit. Pushing the covers from over his head, he stared groggily around his room. Sunlight flooded through the open curtains and half blinded him. He could curse Cadey, he was sure she’d done it on purpose. No doubt she’d done it earlier on when she’d gotten up. Damn girl always had to be up two hours before she even had to get dressed. Coffee Hype, Shower and makeup. She always had to look perfect for that idiotic boyfriend of hers, Rufus.
He could hear his mother downstairs pottering around the kitchen, obviously trying to get some form of breakfast together. Though what, Zack dreaded to think. Cadey was chattering animatedly on the phone in the hall outside his door. Talking as loud as she possibly could. She knew he hated her dating Rufus and rubbed it in his face whenever she got the chance. How he wished he could trade her in, maybe get a refund. Tell the hospitals his mother had a dud child.
He remembered when he used to tell her she was adopted.
His father, back when he was still around, would wallop him for it. “Be nice to your sister” he would say. “Family is important” Not important enough for him to stick around though. Zack thought poisonously. Cadey repressed memories of her father, tried to pretend he didn’t exist, which was fine by Zack, it wasn’t as though he really cared.
Once Zack was ready, dressed and looking as perfect as he ever did, he made his way downstairs and out of the door before his mother could thrust any unwanted breakfast his way. Outside, Tifa and Cloud stood talking, under one of the old Birch Tree’s in Zack’s garden. The two knew by now not to bother knocking in the morning unless they too, wanted to be invited for breakfast, which both being too polite to refuse, would eat and end up feeling nauseous.
“Zack!” Tifa grinned in her usual way, the smile reaching the corners of her eyes. “Come on, lets go.” Zack just nodded, walking beside Tifa while Cloud talked on about the results of lasts night football game. Zack nodded in agreement when he said that Robyns should be disqualified from the team. If it wasn’t for him, they’d have won. “Football, is that all guys care about?” Tifa asked, rolling her eyes, she never did get the football thing, and yet she went and watched every match just because Zack and Cloud were in the team.
“Football, booze and sex.” Cloud corrected with a laugh, clicking his tongue. “Come on Tifa, you know if you paid attention to it you might actually enjoy it. Just think of all those guys running around in tight shorts and tops. How can you not love that? You’re a girl.”
Zack didn’t hear what Tifa said, the image of Cloud in tight shorts took him completely by surprise and he found his eyes dropping to the floor in embarrassment. Zack wasn’t gay, he knew he wasn’t but he did appreciate guy’s bodies, Cloud was the same, except he was more open about it. He’d say when he found a guy hot, Zack would prefer to sit in silence and not admit to himself.
When they reached the school, Zack saw two familiar blonde heads. The long haired one belonged to his sister who was locked in a tight embrace with Rufus which almost made Zack gag. Reno, who could often be found with Rufus was leaning casually against the fence looking bored and irritated. He wasn’t overly fond of being a third wheel. As they walked past, Zack purposely pushed into Rufus, gaining a “Fuck!” from Rufus and a; “Zack you’re a jerk!” From Cadey.

“As you know this is your final year here with us.” The Headmaster spoke, “You have about six months left in total and because of that you need to begin thinking about your futures. As you, or at least most of you are aware, Riverview College is not too far from here and most of you could easily commute there if you wanted, or get a dorm room its up to you. You do not have to go there by any means but it is the only College we take you to. You have a week to get used to the campus and make your own decisions about it. We leave after break today.”
College.
Zack had never really thought about it to be honest. He’d never figured he’d even go to College. He’d always just said he’d get a job or possibly continue his football career. College had always been the last thought on his mind. He knew of course Tifa and Cloud were planning on going to College and he knew they wanted him to at least consider it. But he found High School boring and tedious, there wasn’t any reason why college shouldn’t be exactly the same. Except with older people, harder classes and him being at the bottom of the heap again. He didn’t want to have to begin climbing yet another social ladder to make himself something. It had taken him a long time to get where he was now, and even now, he didn’t feel like he was quite where he wanted to be.
By break Tifa and Cloud were really excited about the thought of going to College for a week, rather than have to be in High School. Sure, Zack found the change nice and welcoming, but he wasn’t going to get all giddy about it. Afterall, he didn’t want to go to College, not now, not ever. He was adamant on that fact. He wasn’t going to go to College, he was going to do something different, he was going to get a job and work his way through his life. That way, he could really feel like he earned it, rather than just feel like it was handed to him on a silver platter.
“Come on Zack,” Cloud clapped him on the back, “Anybody would think College was some major thing. Think of it as another four years to kick back and skive.” Tifa looked slightly mortified at this, skiving was not in her nature and she’d often kicked both of Zack’s and Clouds butts for not handing in their homework on time, nor doing it properly. That being of course, if either of them did it in the first place. “Besides, think of all the college women! And Men for that matter.”
At this, Zack couldn’t help but laugh as Cloud’s expression became blank. His hand holding the bottle of lucozade a little too tight. Zack shook his head and clicked in front of Cloud’s face, trying to bring him back to earth. Afterall, if they were going, they should go now. The bus was boarding. “Come on dreamer, if we don’t go now we’ll miss the bus.”
It took little over half an hour to reach the college campus, by this time Zack was almost falling asleep. The overbearing clammy heat made his head spin, even with the window pushed wide he felt like he could barely breathe. Cloud was having the same problem, he’d gone as far as to actually unbutton his shirt. The teachers didn’t seem to care though, each one of them was in a various (but still decent) state of undress.
Finally, after what seemed like a decade, the bus pulled into an already overcrowded car park and screeched to a halt. People who’d fallen asleep were coming around drowsily, and those who werent asleep rushed forward to be the first ones off the bus. Zack, Cloud and Tifa all remained seated until they were sure it was safe for them to move without being caught in what could only be described as; a heard of rushing baby elephants.
Tifa gasped when she looked upon the building and Cloud muttered a; “Totally awesome.” Zack stared at it, not overly impressed by it but not exactly disappointed either. He hadnt known what he was expecting but he felt like a college should be more modern. This was as far from being modern as you could possibly go.
There seemed to be towers on the building. The building itself was firebrick red with green ivy creeping up the sides of it. The windows were large with diamond patterns, it had the feeling of a very old outdated building. Yet Zack definatly felt the energy here. It was different to school, stronger somehow. And although nothing like he expected, he found himself appreciating it. You couldn’t help but admire the architecture of it. The smooth lines, the green grass. The large trees and the silver hair of the male standing in a corner by the courtyard.
Wait…
What?
Zack did a re-take and looked back over to the corner. Sure enough, standing inside it was a tall silver haired student standing with a raven haired one. Both of them were looking in this direction, in the direction of the school bus. Zack found himself severely wishing he’d have not chosen this spot to stand in, as the silver haired male could see him, Zack just hoped he hadnt noticed the faint flush creep up his cheeks.
Yet, even though he wanted to. He couldn’t tear his eyes away. The long silver hair that flowed around him, almost seeming to give him a silver aura. Even from here, Zack could see the bright green of the guy’s eyes, the lean yet muscular body that he hid underneath a large black coat. His stern, yet overbearingly handsome face. With features that any sculpture would die to be able to create. Zack wanted to run his hands through that silver hair, wanted to feel it to see if it felt as silky as it looked.
“Zack! Oy!” Cloud punched him in the arm. “Are you even listening?” Zack forced himself to turn away and look at Cloud, giving him a childish grin. “What’re you staring at anyway?” Pushing past Cloud he looked to where Zack was, up until a few moments ago, staring at.
But he wasn’t there.
Not even the raven haired guy was there.
Yet Zack knew he hadnt imagined it. Not even his mind, which was so good at coming up with things, could make up a vision of such perfection. Whoever he was, Zack needed to know. Already he could feel his blood boiling, he needed to know who this guy was. And Zack, recognising a challenge of his own making, smiled to himself before slipping an arm around Cloud’s and Tifa’s shoulders.
“You know… College…” He began, “Might not be such a bad idea afterall! I mean… one semester cant hurt, right?”
