A/n: This is AU. This only follows the original game canon and AC and Kadaj has been brought back to life. That’s all you need to know. : D And this is really just me self-indulging in one of my favorite pairings in this fandom.

On the screen of Kadaj’s PHS was this one and only message in small, thin, black text:
I’ll be home soon.
To those who didn’t know Cloud well enough, they wouldn’t be able to understand just why that one text message alone was enough to ease Kadaj‘s worries. It wasn’t often Cloud would text him during those long dark nights when he would drive his Fenrir and deliver packages to people all over the world of Gaia.
Sometimes, he would be gone for weeks and Kadaj, with nothing to do in their apartment, would pace around, wondering, just wondering, sometimes losing himself in his thoughts, his daydreams and when he would lie in bed and sleep, his dreams that seemed more like nightmares, more like memories that didn’t belong to him. One of his greatest fears was that these memories would eventually devour him and turn him into someone who he had never wanted to be ever again.
He was tense. His skin was clammy, his palms sweating. Kadaj decided to take a break from his pacing and sat in front of the door, folding his legs, wrapping his arms around them. How would he welcome Cloud home this time? Should he reward Cloud with a kiss because in the form of those words, Cloud had given him relief? But then, Cloud had made him worry far more than he would have liked and now he was irritated, feeling the need to reach out and hurt and crush and make things bleed.
A small dark smile curled upon his lips. Yes, they could do that. They would fight and he would push Cloud around, but Cloud would push back and then Kadaj would take the nearest weapon he could find, even if it was something like a lamp and try to hurl it at him, screaming at his face, cursing angrily and then Cloud would pull him into a fierce embrace. Kadaj would still struggle, beating Cloud’s chest with his fists and then his screams would subside, turning into sobs…
This wouldn’t be the first time. It had happened before.
It made him feel so weak and insignificant like the very clone he was, but Cloud had understood him all too easily and sometimes, that was what he hated, having one’s pain exposed and be acknowledged as though it actually mattered, as though Cloud truly cared…
The subtle sounds of the jingling keys and then the turning of the doorknob interrupted Kadaj’s train of thought and roused him out of his brooding musings. He stood up and stepped back, crossing his arms, watching the door expectantly as it finally opened. There was Cloud standing before him, adorned in all black. He was staring at Kadaj as though he was waiting for something as well.
Kadaj made up his mind. He approached Cloud, stalked him like one would stalk a prey and saw the way Cloud tensed in anticipation. Kadaj smiled and decided to do something that he knew was completely unexpected. He stood right in front of Cloud, held out his arms and embraced him.
“Welcome home,” he whispered. “Nii-san.”
Cloud stiffened at first and then he relaxed. Kadaj closed his eyes, reveling in the warmth that Cloud radiated, relishing the all too rare moment of their intimacy. He took it a step further and kneeled, pushing aside the long piece of clothing, which resembled something like a cloak, covering half of the lower part of his body, and unbuckled Cloud’s belt. Then he dragged the zipper of his pants down. Kadaj frowned. The last thing that stood between him and Cloud was another flimsy piece of clothing: boxers.
“Why do you have to wear all these things?” Kadaj grumbled.
Those blue-green eyes continued to watch him, completely and utterly transfixed. Kadaj could tell from the hesitation in those same eyes that Cloud was unsure about this, but then his fingers wove into the strands of Kadaj’s hair and yanked, convincing him otherwise. He gestured for Cloud to close the door. This moment was never meant to be shared with the rest of the world.
Cloud complied and let the door swing shut. Kadaj pinned him against it, loving the way his body practically melded with Cloud’s and then he grabbed Cloud’s pants, along with his boxers and pulled them down to his knees. At last, his member was exposed. He wasn’t as hard as Kadaj had originally thought. He would have to fix that. Kadaj smirked and then grinded his still clothed body against Cloud’s, eliciting a soft groan from him.
“Kadaj,” Cloud murmured. “Why are you doing this?”
“Shh,” Kadaj said softly and grinded against him again, rocking his body back and forth, shuddering at the feel of Cloud’s exposed length rubbing against his. “Just go with it,” he said, gasping as he then felt Cloud’s hands on his hips and then one of those hands gripped the zipper of his own pants and dragged it down. With his other hand, he grabbed Kadaj’s still clothed arousal and gave it a hard, teasing stroke. Kadaj shuddered again. He needed to turn this around.
He held Cloud’s hands and kissed both of his wrists. “Trust me,” he said, looking straight into Cloud’s beautiful eyes. He undressed himself, starting with the sweater, then the top and then he pulled down his pants and his underwear. He did the same with Cloud and fought the urge to roll his eyes at the sight of the straps that held the cloak together and the belt dropping to the ground with a very loud thud.
He kneeled again, glancing at Cloud’s fully aroused length and then took it into his mouth, relishing the way Cloud gripped his hair and shivered and groaned. Kadaj moved his mouth up and down and continued to watch him. His cheeks were flushed red. His eyes were half-lidded, turning into a darker shade of blue in his lust and desire for Kadaj.
Kadaj licked the very tip with his tongue and then he sucked, drawing out a long, moan out of his beloved caretaker. Ever since he had been brought back to life by Aeris, her way of showing him the path to atonement and forgiveness, Cloud was the only one to take responsibility of him. Nobody else wanted to deal with him. Only Cloud.
At last, Cloud came, filling him with his essence. Kadaj pulled his mouth away so he wouldn’t choke on it and felt some of it drip down his chin. Kadaj smirked at him and licked it off with his tongue. That was all it took for Cloud to finally move, grabbing Kadaj’s wrist and practically dragging him over to their bedroom. He took something from their drawers and then pushed Kadaj against the bed. Cloud climbed on top of him and unscrewed the bottle of lubrication.
“I’ve been gone too long, haven’t I?” Cloud whispered, dipping those fingers into the bottle of lube. Kadaj watched with a smug satisfaction as Cloud held those fingers and then prepared himself, pushing those fingers inside of him. It was fascinating, he thought, how those lips parted, how those eyes turned an even darker shade of blue that it was almost black. He braced himself as Cloud pulled his fingers out of his body and then lowered himself onto Kadaj’s aching length.
Heat surrounded him. It felt so good and then he arched his hips, pushing deeper into Cloud. Then Cloud rose up and brought himself down again, creating his own rhythm that Kadaj easily accommodated to, reveling in the heat and the way Cloud’s body clenched and unclenched around Kadaj, pushing him closer and closer to the edge.
A shudder coursed through Cloud’s body and Kadaj knew then that he had hit that spot and then he took control of the pace and quickened it, hitting that same spot over and over again. Cloud let out one last groan and came for the second time, spilling his essence all over Kadaj’s chest. Then Kadaj could feel it, his own release, overriding his body, and that was when he was painfully aware of everything— how Cloud always returned to him even though he’d be gone for weeks, how Kadaj was still here, as his own person, as himself and nobody else.
The nightmarish memories didn’t mean anything. They were simply as they have always been: memories. Cloud had probably known about that and perhaps he knew far more than Kadaj would give him credit for. He pulled himself away from Kadaj and then Kadaj saw the trails of his essence dripping down Cloud’s thighs. Kadaj grinned and reached out to Cloud, rising up and pulled him into a fierce, passionate kiss.
It was the first kiss they had shared since Cloud’s departure.
“I didn’t know I was missed,” Cloud whispered against his lips. Kadaj hissed at him, clawing at his back, digging his fingers into that skin, hard enough to draw blood, but Kadaj didn’t care because Cloud was being a jerk. Cloud took it all in stride and smiled mysteriously. “Maybe I should go home more often.”
“I hate you,” Kadaj said, but the words meant nothing because he knew he didn’t mean anything by it, simply expressing his frustration and his irritation at Cloud for being away for far too long. Cloud had probably known about that too; he knew him very well.
Cloud chuckled. He brought his hand to Kadaj’s head and began stroking his hair, gently, very gently, as though he was some fragile thing, a glass perhaps, that would break at the slightest touch. Maybe he was weak and vulnerable in facing things he didn’t understand, but that was fine because Cloud was always there for him.
He felt the faint call of sleep and finally let himself go as Cloud laid him down and rested beside him. He closed his eyes and dreamed. All around him were the different shades of red, rising like the fires that burned down Nibelheim and then black like the sleek leather that donned that monster and at last, green like those eyes, so much like Cloud’s, so much like his.
And there he was, a few feet away from him, poised for battle, his Masamune glinting, almost in hunger, aching for the spill of blood. “Kadaj,” he said with a chilling tone of finality in his voice. “Do you really think you can win against me? Soon I will take over what is mine and eliminate your very existence.”
“I am not alone,” Kadaj said and he was right, as the dreams shifted and melted and then, Cloud was beside him, wielding the First Tsurugi in his hands. Cloud smiled at him, his blue-green eyes so bright and vibrant, so full of life.
“So this was where you were,” Cloud said, pointing the tip of his sword against Sephiroth. Nii-san is so strong, Kadaj thought, but he knew that when Cloud and Sephiroth had fought for the third time, he hadn’t been alone. “You were in my memories, in our memories as expected, and still you wreck so much havoc.”
There was a peculiar smile curling upon Sephiroth’s too-pale lips, the curve of it strikingly similar to the curve of his own blade. It was a smile that promised eternal death. “Not for long,” he said, poising that sword, aiming it at Cloud and Kadaj. “Did you not remember what I have last said? I will never be a memory.”
Those words no longer affected Cloud. He held Kadaj’s hand and squeezed it once. “Let’s do it.”
Kadaj nodded and called out his Souba. The twin-bladed sword manifested in his hands, sleek and just as deadly, shining with defiance. He and Cloud exchanged knowing glances and then turned to face Sephiroth.
Together, he thought. I am not alone.
Like electricity, the tension crackled between the three of them.
Sephiroth made the first move and jumped.
At last, the battle began.
Fin.

A/n: Yeah, head canon—Cloud and Kadaj share a connection that allows them to visit each other in dreams, kind of like how Zack and Aeris (and Sephiroth) keeps visiting Cloud and screwing with his head. XDD
It’s been a long time since I have been in this fandom. I think I’m going back. I miss Cloud and Kadaj (and Rufus) very much.
But yeah, I like ambiguous endings, hence why I left it there.
As always, feedback is totally appreciated.
