This story takes place about a year or so after the final showdown at the Iifa Tree. Alexandria has been peaceful since Necron, and Garland's defeat. Kuja had returned to the kingdom, a changed man. Still obssesive over things of beauty, and he could find only one woman in the entirety of Alexandria and the neighboring regions whose beauty could compete with that of his 'canary'. The legendary female general, Beatrix. In this continuity, they've been in a secret relationship for some time, and at the point of time this story takes place, Steiner has just discovered Bea's secret. Old habits die hard it seems, and Rusty has just not been able to get over the fact that Kuja has changed. In a fit of rage, he attacks her, calling her a traitor. Beatrix manages to fend him off, though he has given her a black eye, and several cuts down her arms, scratches and bruises on her body. This is where our story begins.

It was dark in the room of the castle that belonged to the General. Beatrix sat alone on her bed, her eye patch sitting next to her, crumpled from clutching it so tightly after Steiner's attack on her. She was shaking, and tears streamed down her face. 'Why?' She thought, 'Why would he do such a thing to me?' The General had thought Steiner was over his predjudices after traveling with Zidane and the party to save their world.

As if on cue, a soft, slightly lilting voice came out of the shadows. "My unfading rose....what troubles you?" She hadn't even heard him approach through the roar of her thoughts and the rush of blood still ringing in her ears. Beatrix lit a candle or two on her bedside, illuminating her face, and revealing a shock of white hair and purple clothing as Kuja sat down next to her, a hand reaching to cup her downcast chin, and tilt it towards him. Her tangled mess of chestnut colored hair covered her good eye, which was blacked, hiding it from his view. Her other eye, blind since birth gave him that ever blank stare. Kuja saw the tears staining her face, and a frown creased his feminine features. "What has happened to you, my beloved rose?" He asked, concern filtering into his voice.

Beatrix tried to pull away from him, she didn't want him to see the wounds that now littered her body. He didn't relent. The hand cupping her cheek brushed her hair away from her eye, and she heard the gasp come from the Genome. Hands grasped her arms, pulling them into the candle light, revealing bloodstained cut after cut. "Who has done this?" Kuja demanded, voice suddenly harsh, eyes wide and angry as they fell on her torn stockings, seeing the dark bruises on her thighs beneath the ripped material. "Tell me his name." He snarled, "Tell me Beatrix!" The last words were a command, and she trembled, falling against him.

"Steiner, he..he found us out my beloved Genome." She stammered, voice faltering, breath hitching in her throat. Kuja got up, and moved to light the rest of the candles that were on the walls of her room. Beatrix cringed as her entire disheveled form was brought into the light. Her feet were bare, save for her stockings, corset half unlaced, and it was clear Steiner had crushed some of the boning into her sides. Kuja slipped back to her side, examining her wounds. "I shall have his life for this grave mistake." He growled, already getting back to his feet, and it appeared he was preparing to find the Captain of the Knights of Pluto.
