The Calamity had struck.
Devastation reigned. Fires burned. Blood boiled. Land sundered.
A dragon’s roar echoed across the Carteneau Flats, closely followed by the call of a large bird.
Yet as chaos reigned throughout Eorzea, as people of all races and ages lost their lives, a lone soul stood staring at a blasted crater with an empty expression on his face. A young Hyur boy, three summers old, remained motionless as he gazed numbly at the area in front of him. His disheveled brown hair swayed in the breeze, his blue eyes raw and red from tears that would no longer come. His very mind had shut down for his own protection, the lad unable to face the reality that he was alone in the world, trapped in a literal hellscape of fire and brimstone.
It was in this state that Hydaelyn finally found him.
Venat, glowing with the Primal energies she took into herself upon her ascension, looked upon the boy from behind, her eyes wide with shock and horror. This was beyond her imagination. She knew full well he had suffered beyond reckoning, but this… She should have asked for more information from him. She should have been more prepared. Her heart bled profusely for this young, innocent, pure heart, now irrevocably tarnished by the harshness and cruelty of reality…
“My dearest one…” Venat murmured to herself as she quietly stepped toward the young boy, gazing at his tear-stained cheeks with an agonized expression. Slowly she knelt down and reached for him, lifting his small body up and cradling him in her arms. The ancient held him close, her breast pressing comfortingly through her robes, tears welling up in her own eyes as she looked more closely at his vacant gaze.
“Dearest one…” she repeated, her gentle hand brushing the dark hair out of his eyes, “please forgive me… I know this will condemn you to a life of never ending hardship and struggle, but… I have no choice. A promise was made… and you… You are our only hope…”
She leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on the boy’s dirt-smudged forehead.
“Dearest one… Receive my Blessing… May it serve you well in the time to come. I only hope you can forgive me…”
Once more, Venat brought the boy to her bosom and held him tight, her tears streaming down her cheeks before she laid him down on his back near the edge of the crater. The youth’s eyes had closed, and a look of peace finally graced him as he slept.
The sounds of battle and calamity ceased. Stillness echoed across the vast plain, lasting for a few precious moments before the search parties deployed to look for survivors of the tragedy.
One of the few remaining lives found in Carteneau itself was the young boy, found beside the crater marking the former location of his parents’ medical station.

“Are ye sure yer ready to head out, lad?”
Baderon smiled at his newest adventurer, rubbing his head through his turban. The boy seemed barely old enough to tie his shoes, much less work as a serious contributor to the guild. And yet every single person he spoke to about his progress gave him rave reviews, praising not only his strength and skill, but his genuine kindness and enthusiasm as well. Of course, plenty of people said that eight years of age was far too young for anyone to put themselves in danger. And yet…
Baderon himself knew how dangerous the world truly was. People lost their lives every day for one reason or another. The fact that this young Hyur could stand on his own two feet at such a tender age gave him more hope than concern, despite the fact that he could not for the life of him explain why.
“There’s still plenty of time fer ye to reconsider, ya know,” the liaison continued, though deep down he already knew the answer.
“I’m fine, thanks!” the boy wasn’t even phased by the daunting prospects that lay before him, perhaps choosing optimism over fear. “I trained hard for this moment, and there’s no way I’m backing down now!” The youth hefted his axe up and rested the haft against his shoulder, a bright grin spreading across his handsome features.
“Alright, then. Ye can’t say I didn’t warn ye.” Baderon reached down and shook the boy’s free hand. “Arden Vahl, go out and do is proud, ye hear? And be sure to stop in to tell us stories of yer adventures!”
“You got it!” said Arden with a wave of his hand. “See you soon, Mr. Baderon!”
The barkeep watched the young marauder leave with a smile. Something about the kid’s confidence seemed refreshing to him.
“Are they setting out, my friend?” asked a female voice from the stairwell.
Baderon turned to greet the new arrival, chuckling as he watched her walk confidently down the stairs into the bar. “Aye, he was chompin at the bit to leave. Ye were right to wanna keep an eye on him… he’s got a lot of promise, Admiral, and no mistake.”
Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn stood still and looked at the door that Arden had exited from, a look of concern on crimson lips that stood out from her alabaster face. “Does it not seem strange for me to put my full trust in one so young? Plenty of others spoke vehemently against my decision to give him greater autonomy.”
Baderon laughed out loud. “That lad would have pushed back with the stubbornness of an aurochs. Nah, you made the right call. Besides,” he added with a widening grin, “she’s out there as well. No doubt that kind of adventurer will catch her interest - mayhap their collective interest, into the bargain.”
“Let us hope,” replied Merlwyb, allowing herself a small smile. “Though part of me is somewhat… envious of Y’shtola, for some reason.”
“Eh? Could ye speak louder, Admiral? I couldn’t hear ye.”
“Tis nothing of concern, old friend. Pay me no mind.” Merlwyb waved the question aside with her gloved hand. “Do contact me if anything arises.”
“O’ course, Admiral,” answered Baderon with a nod. “I’m sure it won’t be long. That lad Arden is sure to shake things up plenty, and not in a bad way.”
