Cid jumped out of the cockpit and stood on the wing. He watched Captain closely. C'mon, he thought to himself, that was my best run! C'mon
Captain looked up from his clipboard and gave Cid a wolfish grin. He nodded. "Good work, Highwind. You"ll have your ticket into the best flight academies in the world at this rate."
He looked down and grinned. Captain didn"t mind if they got excited but he liked for them to keep their composure. He walked up and received his grade sheet.
"This means we can start looking into these designs you keep talking about, Cid," Captain muttered to him. "Bring your materials this evening to my office and we"ll start."
"Yes, Captain. Thank you." He calmly walked into the hangar, took off his flight suit and tugged on his black uniform and stepped out into the hallway.
He stood there for a long moment.
"YES!" He took off running down the hallway, jumping up and down, leaping over a third year and jumping down staircases. His exuberance beat him into his dorm and Tickie nearly collided with him.
"Passed, did you?"
"Yes! Aced it! And Captain says I can start designing the plans for my airship!"
"Really! Wow"" Tickie laughed. "See. Spooky God was looking out for you. You"re the best pilot out of anyone here and you"re only sixteen. Wait until the academies hear about you and with your own ship""
"Could you two shut up?" Free was sitting across the room. His black uniform was crisp and neat. There were only a handful of male students left in the academy who wore the black uniforms of the upper classmen. Several had taken the invite and gone away to the war. Because of this, they had their own section of the dorm. A common room for all of them to use and each of them now had their own rooms. Free sneered at them. "I could care less what""
"Fuck off, Free," Cid told him, flipping him the bird. He laughed and clapped Tickie on the back. "C"mon, Tickie, let"s go tell Rain."
Tickie was quiet for a moment and something passed through his eyes that Cid couldn"t interpret but then he was smiling again and following Cid out the door. "Sure. Let"s go."
"Oh, but first, I"ll tell Jack."
Again, Tickie paused. He seemed to be thinking of something. And again, Cid ignored it. "Would you mind finding Rain and going to the court yard? I"ll meet you there!" And, with that, Cid raced away.
Tickie watched him and his smile faded. "I was certain you"d want to tell Morgan first, Cid. But"" He shook his head. "I know it"s none of my business but you wanted so badly to get her out"that was why you made the resolves you did. Doesn"t look like that matters anymore." He started down the hall, looking skinny in his black uniform. His hair was shaggy and messy. He sighed. "Looks like this place has worked its magic. Right, sis?"
Tickie didn"t go look for Rain right away. Unlike Cid, he knew where she was. So, he took his time wandering the halls.
"C"mon, jump! Jump you little bitch!"
Tickie froze, listening. He heard a hissing breath and took a few steps forward, looking into a deserted hallway.
Morgan was there, as he had suspected and so were a few other girls. One of them was Free"s little sister and as her brother was a prefect, she was the leader. Morgan was small and frail-looking. Her dark green uniform looked pretty on her.
Cid had stopped checking up on her eventually"
But Tickie had not. His sister had done the same thing to him and she had regretted it. So did he, for hating her for it. He couldn"t do much for Morgan but he tried to check up on her once in awhile. For Cid"s sake and hers.
There were four girls around Morgan. She was not crying. She didn"t say anything. She had the look of someone who expected most of her life to turn out this way but could do nothing but creep forward towards it. She had her knife out, which seemed to be the only reason they hadn"t gotten too close yet. But one girl had Morgan"s practice materia and was holding it above her head.
"C"mon, you stupid little bitch."
One of them lashed out to hit her. Morgan jumped back towards the wall, swiping with her dagger.
"Oh, just do it already!" Free"s sister grabbed the materia and activated it.
Tickie had no time to move. He clenched his fist and his Barrier materia activated. Morgan ducked but the Fire magic dissipated around her. Tickie stomped up to them, grabbed Free"s wrist and twisted.
She cried out in surprise and he snatched the materia. "Go," he ordered. "Now. Or I"ll use my materia and see how you like it."
The four girls took off. Tickie looked at Morgan. She didn"t look at him.
"You didn"t have to do that."
"I know."
"So why did you?"
"My God thought it might be a good idea. My quota of good deeds wasn"t full yet for today."
That made her smile a little. "Thanks, Tickie," she said, very quietly.
He put her materia in her hand and shook his head. "Put your knife away. Where are you going?"
"Outside""
He looked at her closer. "Did they hurt you?"
"No," she said immediately.
"C"mon, Morgan"Cid would never forgive me if I let you walk away and you were hurt."
She drew back. For a split second, it looked at though she was going to say something but she held it in and went silent. Sliding down against the wall, she sat and took off her boot. Her sock was soaked red.
"The back of your foot""
""above the heel""
He knelt next to her and took out his materia again.
For the very first time in a very long time, Jack gave Cid a grin. "Congratulations, Highwind. You"ll have ten schools and ShinRa knocking your door down." He studied Cid. "I remember when you was just a little shit, runnin" around here with your sister. Now you"re basically a man. You make me feel old."
"I brought you more cigarettes too."
"Shit, son, I knew there was somethin" worth it when I covered your ass. Hand "em over."
Cid grinned and took out a pack. He tossed them to Jack. "Snuck out and got "em in the Gold Saucer."
Jack snickered. "With that girlfriend of yours?"
"Hey, she"s not""
"At this age, there ain"t no such thing as "just friends", son."
Cid shifted, smiling guiltily.
"You told Mort yet?"
"About"about her""
"About you passin", dipshit. Mort doesn"t have very good luck with women, I doubt he"ll care."
"Oh"oh, no, not yet! I"m gonna later. When I go see him for class."
Jack nodded, sitting back in his and rubbing his scratchy beard. "So when do you get to start discussing plans with Cetbal?"
"Tonight. Can"t wait."
"You got your shit together? He doesn"t fuck around when he gets to seriously sit down and talk business."
"Yep, it"s all ready to go." He glanced at the clock. "Ah, damn. I told Tickie I"d go meet him and Rain! Gotta go! Later, Jack! And thanks!" He turned and ran off. Four girls passed by him as he went but he ignored them.
The courtyard was empty.
"Tickie?" Cid scratched his face like Jack, only there wasn"t much of a beard there yet. "Hey! Tickie?"
No one answered.
"Huh, maybe he hadn"t found her yet. That"s weird. He"s like a damn human radar most of the time""
So Cid went to look by himself. But he never found Tickie and didn"t find Rain so he went back to his room, gathered his materials and nervously went to go to the Captain"s office.
The first thing they had to do was tone down Cid"s ambition. Technology couldn"t handle everything Cid wanted. Cetbal went through Cid"s ideas and preliminary sketches and sat back.
"You"ve got good, solid designs at the core, Highwind. Ha, you"ll command your own fleet one day."
Cid beamed. "I dunno if I"ll ever do that."
"Mark my word, boy. People are noticing you. Other officers and the headmaster. You"re either at or near the top of all your classes and an engineering genius. We don"t see many students like you. You"ve become a prize student. Keep it up." He gestured at the prints. "If you don"t mind, I"d like to use these on some of my classes so they can do some design work."
"It would be an honor, sir."
"Good." Cetbal clapped him on the back. "Now, I"m sure you"ve got a celebration or two to start. And it"s a Friday. Get the hell outta my office."
Cid grinned and laughed. "Thank you, sir!" He jumped up and took off.
He slid his hand underneath her skirt, feeling muscles shudder. She arched slightly. He slid his fingers up to her hip and paused, grinned and looked into her face, raising an eyebrow. "No underwear?"
She winked. "Thought I"d get rid of it first. It took you long enough to find me. I was afraid I"d have to start without you."
Cid pushed his hand between her legs, stroking her skin. "Tickie was supposed to find you for me."
Rain shrugged. "I never saw him. Oh well." She reached up, hooking fingers into his jacket and pulled him to her, undoing the buttons and shoving the jacket off his shoulders.
He grinned and threw it off. She leaned up to kiss him and he sat back on his knees, pulling her up and going for the clasp of her skirt. With a practiced ease, it was undone and pushed over her body. "Now, what were you saying about needing to start without me?"
She crowded close to him, pushing herself against him. "I could show you." She put her hand on her throat and slid it in a sensual line down over her collarbone, massaging her breast, flat down her abdomen and between her legs. "It"s pretty hot."
A predatory sort of grin came over him. "Is it?"
She curled her fingers, cupping her hand. "Fairly." She pushed up, touching herself. She made a soft sound and licked her lips.
Cid swallowed and leaned back a little. There was a bottle-neck fascination as she rubbed herself, massaging her fingers over heat and dampness. Her eyes closed and her breathing came out in little pants.
Cid chewed on his lip, eyes raking over her open shirt. Her pert breasts warm and inviting. Her body tone and hot and"
And her hand, working between her legs kept catching his attention. She rubbed and massaged, sped up and slowed down. She leaned back on her bed, spreading her knees, and her hips arched into her hand.
Cid had to do something"something"
He tore off his clothes and knelt on her bed. He wrapped his hands around her knee, lifting and ducking in to kiss it. She moaned faintly. Smirking, Cid continued kissing and sucking his way up to her inner thigh.
Her hips moved a little more insistently the closer he got. And with a nip, he nosed her hand away and gave her a long lick. She cried out softly. He wrapped an arm around one of her legs and put his other hand on her stomach, sucking and licking. He wiggled with his tongue, rubbing and massaging.
She writhed, curling her fingers into her sheets. Her dark hair scattered across her face, a faint sheen of sweat on her brow. She murmured incoherently when he pushed his tongue into her. Struggling to keep quiet, she grit her teeth, feeling hot all over.
"Cid"Cid"I"now""
He was gone and then appeared again, kissing her throat and pulling her up and the next thing she knew, he was inside her. She stiffened, arching her back and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
When Cid did not return that night, it didn"t take much addition for Tickie to figure out where Cid probably was. It was probably better that way"
"Please, don"t tell him, Tickie."
He looked at her mournfully. "But"Morgan"there"s no way they could have cut you like that. What happened?"
"I was practicing. I didn"t have all gear on in the training room. Please, Tickie?"
"But you wouldn"t have been able to walk if it have been done properly."
"It was an accident, Tickie."
"Then why didn"t Stark do something?"
Morgan went still. "Trent."
Tickie sighed. "All right, all right. I get it. None of my business. Just be careful."
"You aren"t supposed to say things like that."
Tickie shrugged. "My sister is already dead."
Morgan shifted a little awkwardly. "Bye, Tickie." She ran off.
Tickie watched her, wondering if he"d done the right thing and then shook his head. What happened would happen.
Now, he sat in the common room. He had work to do. He should have started and been done by now but"he just couldn"t concentrate.
When he woke up, Cid had not returned so he showered and dressed and left to go on Mortimer"s field combat class.
Tickie was the only one who showed up. Granted, the extra was optional but usually people came. Today though, it was raining, and some big finals had ended the day before. Students were taking a break.
Mortimer snapped his fingers rather sadly when Tickie showed up. "Damn, I thought I"d get a day off too."
"Looks like it"s just me, Mort."
"Where"s Cid?"
Tickie doubted school policy would agree with Cid"s choice in sleeping arragements. "Dunno."
Mortimer laughed. "Yeah, right, but I"ll take your word for it. You don"t get all wound up about exams like everyone else, do you?"
"Nope."
Mortimer eyed him. "Grab a weapon, Tickie. Let"s go."
Outside, the wind had risen to a light breeze. Mortimer took Tickie out into the woods. It didn"t take much practice before Mortimer stopped them, put his gun away and said, "Somethin" botherin" you, Tickie? You"re distracted."
Cid breezed back into the common room, grinning in a self-satisfied sort of way. "Tickie?" Silence greeted him. "Well, son of a bitch. Where"d you go?"
He gathered up some paper and sat at his desk for nearly an hour, adding details to his designs. I"ll just call it the Highwind. That"s a great name for an airship. I"ll take these to Captain and go get some food! I"m starving.
Mortimer took out a cigarette and leaned back against a tree, watching Tickie shuffle his way into a town to buy some new boots. He took out a very small notebook and paged through it. Each page was dedicated to a student. A habit he"d kept from his Turk days"to know everything he could about everyone.
As he found Morgan Highwind"s page, he clamped his teeth tighter on his cigarette. You may have said something too late, Tickie.
The weekend passed quietly. Monday came and went. Tickie avoided Cid during that time. He didn"t like lying to Cid and he knew he would have to if Cid asked him where he"d been. Morgan had asked him to stay quiet and he didn"t want to admit that he"d confided in Mortimer.
The first class they had together that day was their materia class. Cid came up and sat next to him. He opened his mouth to ask but Tickie headed him off.
"So where were you on Saturday, eh? I was the only one around for Mort"s field class."
Cid laughed. "Business."
"Yeah, right! It must have been stormy weather."
"Lots of rain," Cid said and winked at him.
Tickie snorted and the class preceded as normal. Mortimer gave no indication that he had spoken to Tickie at all.
"Okay, everybody up. Mock combat today. We"ll be focusing on materia combinations. That"s all you can use. Combinations only. Nothing can stand alone."
Tickie was chosen to go up this time but just as he and his opponent raised their weapons, the door opened.
Headmaster Manzanilla"s presence occupied the whole room. Mortimer went still and raised a hand to keep everyone quiet. "Headmaster."
Manzanilla spared a glance at Mortimer and looked away, surveying the room. His hard gaze stopped at Cid. "Highwind. Come with me."
Tickie shot a glance at Mortimer and then at Cid.
Cid shrugged and stood. "Yes, sir." He waved a hand and smiled at Tickie when he left.
He hadn"t been in the headmaster"s office in awhile. The last time was when he had been skipped ahead into the upperclassman engineering classes. The office hadn"t changed. It was shiny and full of deep color. Manzanilla shut the door when Cid entered and gestured for him to sit down.
"We thought we"d tell you first. We"ll bring Morgan here later." He handed Cid a letter with a very official-looking seal on it.
Cid nodded and, mystified, opened it and read:

Finally preparing the next chapter. Only took me forever.

And it never happened. Wow. I can't believe this is still here. I write mostly over on Archive Of Our Own now, as Sailtheplains. Maybe I'll move this over there.
