teeth pulled on the 29th. Now the schedule is screwy again. =__= I
already put in my notice and the 28th is my last day at the company.

“The
End is near.” He’d seen many of those signs held up by fanatics whenever his
army conquered a new land, and he always wondered if there was at least some truth
to it.
History
texts and temple inscriptions depicted wars and catastrophes, and as it reached
the worst of it, everything ended. The devastation would fade away with the
fall of the civilization.
“Everything
has to end, but they never say how,” a soothing voice chimed into the General’s
musings.
“Miss
Gainsborough,” Sephiroth stated with a curt nod in her direction. “Is there a
reason you are invading my dreams to show me this?”
“You
have to prepare for the End,” she replied calmly.
“How
cryptic,” the silver haired man chuckled.
“Well,
nothing is ever easy.”
“The
world doesn’t seem to be ending to me.”
“That’s
why we have to figure out what is ending.” She placed a heavy leather bound
tome in his hands, “Here.”
“A
book?”
Sephiroth’s brow raised as he couldn’t find a title on
the cover.
“History.” Aerith clarified. “They say things about
‘The End,’ but I don’t think they are talking about the destruction of the
planet. Maybe it’s an end to more immediate things like political struggles or
disease.”
“It
hasn’t appeared as frequently since the time of Jenova.”
“That
may be why they say the End is near.”
“Lovely
tales of impending doom, but why are there blank pages?”
“Some
of history has yet to be written. I trust you to find this book in the real
world.”
“Why
me?”
“You’ll
understand in time.”
“So I’m
looking for a book to bring the End?” Sephiroth looked up, but the girl in pink
was gone.
“WARK!” A
brief scuffle in the hallway pulled Sephiroth from his fading dream.
The former General distinctly heard someone sniffle
“Goddamn bird,” before footsteps headed down the hall. With a sigh Sephiroth
stumbled out of bed pulling a very disgruntled Shadow with him.
“If I’m suffering at 5 AM so are you,” he muttered.
By the time Sephiroth made it to the kitchen, Cloud
was nearly falling asleep in his coffee, and Vincent was glaring at the chocobo
chick cowering at Cloud’s feet.
“I should’ve roasted you when I had the chance,” he
growled. “You have no idea how hard it is to blow my nose and not stab myself
in the eye.”
The chocobo ‘kweh’ed and nestled closer to the
blonde human. Cloud glared down at the bird as well.
“Do I look like your mama?” the ex-soldier
sputtered.
“Kweh.”
“So, what’s going on today?” Sephiroth asked as he
joined the others at the table.
“Monster hunt,” Cloud yawned. “Some village in the
grasslands needs help.”
“Sounds like a nuisance,” Sephiroth replied as
Vincent poured him some coffee. The General quirked a brow at
the other’s generosity. “Thank you.”
“Why are you up so early anyway? You could have
slept in,” Vincent asked.
“I heard someone trip over that damned bird.”
“Her name is Sol, and you’re not allowed to damn
her!” Cloud snipped.
“Animal lovers,” Vincent groaned.
“Are you going to work today?” The blonde asked in
an attempt to change the subject.
“No. I don’t think it would be wise to have
Sephiroth in a store filled with guns.”
Sephiroth ignored the dark haired man’s comment.
“Whatever,” Cloud stated and stood up, “I’m going
to go shower, and then I’m leaving. Don’t kill each other, and don’t do
anything to Sol.”
“Affirmative,” the General muttered, while Vincent
only nodded.
“Why do monsters have to get smarter?” Cloud
groaned as he wiped sweat from his forehead. Whatever he was hunting, nature
had given it excellent camoflauge. Cloud had steadily
been picking his way through waist high fields of grass for the past two hours.
According to the locals the creatures showed up about a month ago, and began
systematically eating the live stock. However, recently they began stalking
humans.
“There’s never been anything like it before, it’s
sinister. These animals seldom eat the
people, and instead leave them to suffer and bleed to death.”
Mako mutations were always a possibility in any
region of the world nowadays, but even those ferocious monsters usually left
people alone unless they were threatened or starving.
Cloud paused when he heard a rustle to his left.
His muscles tensed and his Mako-heightened senses flared. The stench of rotting
flesh lingered in his nostrils causing his hair to rise. His eyes locked on to
a subtle shifting in the grass about fifty yards away. When the grass parted a
little and he could see it, he realized it was quite possibly the ugliest thing
he had ever seen in his life.
The monster had no real body structure,
instead it was almost all head. The creatures shape was relative to that of a
large beach ball, only it had glowing yellow eyes and a mouth as wide as it was
and two short legs. As the creature waddled along, its leathery skin slowly
changed pigments and patterns. No wonder the villagers couldn’t describe the
monster. If they had ever even seen it, no one would believe them if they
described it.
The monster observed Cloud for a few moments before
letting out a loud shriek. Cloud heard a rustle behind him only to find two
more monsters approaching.
“It’s calling others to help, which suggests
pack-like qualities.” Cloud noted to himself. The creatures paused for a moment
to rest and Cloud watched their spindly legs shudder. “Gluttons, you’ve gained
too much weight.”
Cloud had to wonder if the creatures could
understand him, as one shrieked indignantly and launched at him. It was still
rather slow, but it had enough weight to hurt if it impacted.
“Tch,” Cloud jumped out
of the way toward the open jaws of another monster. He swiftly shifted his
weight and kicked the monster in the side. The beasts
legs gave way and it rolled to the ground and halted itself with its teeth.
If he had to take a guess, he figured the monster
had at least thirty teeth per row, and it had rows leading al the way back on
each jaw reminiscent of a shark.
Cloud wasn’t given much time to consider the matter
before another creature dove at him. He dodged it as easily as he had the
first, but he desperately wished for a vantage point, but there wasn’t anything
high enough around. Instead, he took a quick count of the monsters he could
see.
“Ten so far, and probably more to come. Where is
the leader? Packs can’t function without a leader.”
Another shriek interrupted his musings as two more
of the monsters barreled towards him. He dodged the first and swung his sword
out, splitting the second in half. Green blood splattered against his leg and
Cloud grimaced a little while three more monsters flew at him.
They were getting faster,
and smarter too, planning larger attacks with each turn. Cloud used his speed
and agility to his advantage, landing a few slices and some well placed blows
to the creatures’ feeble legs to render them partially immobile. However, the
continuing attacks and dodging around carcasses and half dead monsters that
were attempting to bite his legs off left him distracted. He almost didn’t
notice the largest of the monsters approaching.
“Hojo injected you with Mako too?”
It was more of a statement rather than a question,
and Vincent really didn’t see a reason to answer it. Sephiroth had already
drawn his own conclusions. “Being around Reno
has made you too talkative.”
“It’s true though. Your arm has already healed.”
“How do you know it wasn’t a demon?”
“I can sense it. You should know by now that all
those who were injected with Mako can sense each other through the Lifestream.”
“Yes, Hojo did inject me with Mako, but you knew
that. Why are you so interested?”
“I’ve been dead for most of the past nine years.
Then, I’m brought back, and the only thing I care about isn’t mine. I think I
have a right to know more about the person he fell in love with.”
“It’s rude to pry.”
“I never knew. I’ve always been a specimen. I have
no secrets.”
Vincent sighed in defeat. “What do you want to
know?”
“Why did Hojo turn you into a Vampire?”
“A Vampire?”
Vincent scoffed at the accusation.
“What’s so funny about that?”
“vampires are useless to
Hojo. They are weak and stupid. Demons are clever, stronger, and far more
dangerous.”
“So why did you---”
“Drink Cloud’s blood? Because of
the moon.”
“Like a werewolf.”
“Not quite. It’s all science really. The moon has a
distinct gravitational pull, which as you know changes and affects tides. It
affects the body the same way. Galian Beast becomes particularly alarmed and
his excitement awakens Chaos. My demons are bloodthirsty killers, and I would
much rather drink blood from a willing donor than massacre a town.”
“Cloud did always have a thing for monsters.”
“Indeed. Do you have any other questions?”
“Yes.”
Cloud swung at the last of the peons before facing
their leader. It was larger than any of the others, and its legs were nowhere
near as vulnerable as the other pack members’. In addition, this monster had
two extra eyes and two arms jutting out from below its protruding jaw.
These monsters weren’t the smartest Cloud had ever
faced. While they could plan attacks, they were stupid enough to shriek a
battle cry before lunging at an opponent. Cloud paused for a moment to catch
his breath, but as soon as the creature opened its mouth, he prepared for an
attack. There was nothing; no sound.
And then a grey-green ooze shot out of its mouth in
a thick stream. Cloud hid his eyes before it hit him, but he felt the fluid
drip down his front and cover his arm. The viscous material was even in his
hair!
Cloud dropped his arm, and the monster was only a
few yards away. “Okay you’re not as stupid as I thought, but you puked on me!” Cloud grunted and ran towards
the monster. Within a few steps he’d reached his target. Cloud dug his sword
between the monsters arms and yanked upward, which, he reflected later, was
probably a bad idea. The force of the attack not only split the creatures body in half, but it exploded blood, slime and
teeth, which imbedded into Cloud’s arm.
“Well, fuck!”
Sephiroth stared at the ceiling, attempting to lull
himself into a short nap, while Sol seemed Hell-bent on causing a nervous
ruckus. “Shut up!”
“It’s just worried about Cloud. She’ll settle down
eventually,” Vincent drawled as he thumbed through a Mythology text.
“I want it to shut up now!” Sephiroth spat, and
Vincent ignored him.
Twenty minutes of misery later Sephiroth and the
damned bird perked at the sound of an approaching engine.
“Finally,” Sephiroth heaved a sigh, and then
blinked as he stared at the figure now in the front yard. “Vincent?”
“What now?”
“Your… husband… is stripping in your yard.”
“That’s why we don’t have neighbors,” Vincent
replied blandly as if this was a common occurrence. “He’s probably cursing up a
storm and washing rinsing Fenrir off as well.”
“Well, yes, but…”
“Nothing to be alarmed about.”
“It PUKED
on me!”
Vincent tilted his head toward the door, where a
greenish grey muck covered creature masquerading as Strife stood. “They do
that. Did it explode as well?”
“Well, yeah, but that’s not the point!” Cloud
yelped defensively. “I smell like a rotting---” Cloud paused to sniff the muck
“Gods know what, and the goo destroyed Fenrir’s
paint job!”
“Well you’d better get that fixed.”
Sephiroth watched from the sidelines as the two had
what was probably the closest they got to an argument. Not to mention he was
being completely ignored.
“We need to call Reno anyway. We’ll need a buggy if we’re all
going to Gongaga tomorrow,” Cloud sighed and scraped the muck from his hair.
“Indeed.”
“Vincent,” Cloud’s tone became serious and Vincent
looked up from his book. “Those monsters today were intelligent. They had
definite higher thinking skills as well as Mako mutations, or so it seemed. The
villagers said there was nothing like them before, so
it could be a new breed or an experiment gone awry.”
“Right then.” Vincent closed his book. “I’ll get in
touch with Reno
and see if he can’t tell us anything about the monsters, but it would be good
to have a description.”
“I’ll talk to him as soon as I get out of the
shower.”
Sephiroth and Sol both stood in the now vacant
living room. “How did we get demoted to the backseat by some monsters?”
“Wark!”
A/N: Some
humor yes, a little bit of important… whatever. The next chapter is important! I SWEAR! It
really starts to pick up then. And yes they are going to Gongaga for a reason!
