Chapter 10

Seifer put his tray on the table and sat down. He looked around. The cafeteria was full, but once again, he was eating alone. The blonde let his eyes travel to his former table, and noticed there was some perky new cheerleader sitting on his place.
'Whatever... I don't need them' Seifer eyed the indefinable pile of food on his plate, and poked it with his fork. 'This is supposed to provide all the fibres and vitamins a growing young person needs?' For countless minutes Seifer just sat there and stared at his meal with dull eyes. The past week hadn't really been that good for him. After the Monday's incident, Seifer's popularity diagram showed a radical decrease. Even if he did still receive respect from some of the other students, his reputation was mostly but a memory. He wasn't the only good-looking athlete in the school. What bothered the blonde most of all, however, was the fact that Squall still wasn't talking to him. In fact, Seifer hadn't even seen the younger boy, if you didn't count some of the little glimpses in the school halls during breaks. And no matter how hard he had tried, Seifer hadn't been able to repress his feelings towards Squall. 'This is what you deserve, Almasy...' Seifer blinked his eyes when the bell rang to inform the lunch brake had come to its end. Reluctantly he got up and realized he hadn't even touched his meal. The blonde put the tray away and left the cafeteria.

'I guess I have a free period. That is, if I passed Mr. Garrison's chemistry exam.' Seifer made his way to the notice-board, only to be disappointed. He wasn't on the list of names that had passed the test. "Oh hell!" he groaned and smacked the wall with his hand, then leaned against it, positive that the whole world was turning against him. 'This isn't fair anymore... I bet that old carcass failed me just because I never got along with him.' After moping enough, Seifer glanced at the big clock above the lockers and reasoned he might make it in time to chemistry class if he hurried. He grabbed his school bag and ran through the empty halls, looking for the right door. 'Shit. Which one was it? 312 or maybe 213?' When Seifer finally found the right door, he leaned against it to catch his breath, then knocked as politely as he could.

"Enter." came a voice from inside. Hesitantly Seifer opened the door and stepped into the classroom. "Well, what do you know. If it isn't Seifer Almasy." Mr. Garrison announced from the blackboard, causing all the students to turn around. The blonde felt a slight blush cover his face, and was uncomfortable under the many pairs of observing eyes. He cleared his throat and began.

"Excuse me for interrupting your lesson, Mr. Garrison, but do you think you could maybe, possibly make room for one more student? You see, I need to go through this course a-again..." Seifer stammered, knowing everyone was staring at him, this making him feel nervous.

"I know you do. I failed your test, remember? And didn't I tell you we'd meet again, Mr. Almasy. I know your type. Always telling me the useless football is so important. More important than doing your homework or passing your exam! Well I'm telling you, chemistry should come first." Mr. Garrison spoke from the other end of the classroom, sounding somewhat mocking. Seifer narrowed his eyes, but forced himself to swallow his pride and try to be humble.

"Y-you're absolutely right, Mr. Garrison." Seifer managed to say, biting his teeth. For some time the classroom was silent. The teacher eyed Seifer through his thick eyeglasses, and finally gave his answer.

"Well... I think we have room for one more. I just hope this time you will be able to pass the course, this being the third time you're repeating it." Mr. Garrison spoke and motioned for Seifer to come forward from the doorway.

'Fuck you, four-eyed senile.' Seifer cursed inwardly, but let out a relieved sigh.

"It seems there is a free seat next to Mr. Leonhart. You two will be lab-partners." Mr. Garrison continued, the mention of Squall's name almost causing Seifer to freeze.

'Squall!? My lab-partner? Kill me now.' the blonde sighed and made his way through the tables, accompanied with whispers. Apparently people still remembered Squall had hit him, and if not, the black eye Seifer was carrying, served as a pretty good reminder. When the blonde seated himself down, Squall turned his face away, letting Seifer know he wasn't forgiven. 'This should be interesting. He's still giving me the silent treatment, and I'm supposed to work with him...' Seifer sighed, but said nothing, accepting the fact that Squall was still mad at him. He figured it was best if he didn't even look at the younger boy, and just leaned back in his chair.

"Now that Mr. Almasy has found his place, we will continue the lesson." Mr. Garrison informed and returned to the writings on the blackboard. "The experiment we will do requires special caution, or you might end up hurting yourselves." While the teacher went on, explaining the stages of the experiment, Seifer concentrated on Squall. He couldn't stop himself from turning his head in Squall's direction and watch the brunette from the corner of his eye. He could tell Squall was listening to Mr. Garrison's teachings, totally ignoring Seifer, the look on his face unreadable. The blonde blinked his eyes when the teacher's voice suddenly brought him back from his thoughts. "Almasy! Stop daydreaming and put your goggles and gloves on!"

Seifer blinked his eyes and looked around, realizing everyone was already getting ready for the experiment. He put his equipment on and turned to face Squall. The brunette boy, however, didn't meet his eyes. "Do you want me to get the acid and the magnesium?" Seifer asked, raising his brows in question. He frowned when Squall didn't answer him, but got up instead and walketo tto the equipment room to get the test-tubes and other needed equipment. "Okay... I'll take that as a 'yes'." the blonde said to himself and went to get the ingredients from Mr. Garrison. The teacher eyed Seifer from under his glasses when he handed the bottle of acid.

"This is acid, Almasy. Acid is dangerous. Just in case you didn't happen to remember."

Seifer narrowed his eyes, but said nothing, just took the bottle and walked back to where he and Squall were sitting. The younger boy had already returned and arranged all the equipment on the table. Seifer sat down and moved his chair closer to Squall's, this earning him a glare from the brunette boy. "Come on, Squall, I know you hate me, and you have a good reason ,too, but can't you make an exception and talk to me? We are lab-partners and have to work together..." Seifer reasoned, his effort in vain. The look oualluall's face stayed expressionless. He just picked up the bottle of acid, and began the test, acting like Seifer wasn't even sitting next to him. "Please?" the older boy pleaded and leaned closer, not getting any kind of reaction from Squall. Seifer narrowed his eyes, only proving that he had a rather short fuse, just like Rinoa once said. "Fine then! Damn frigid-" Before Seifer could finish his sentence, Squall turned around and spilled acid on the table, only inches away from Seifer's hand. The blonde gasped and quickly pulled his hand away, his eyes as wide as saucers. Seifer watched as the liquid bubbled and ate a hole into the table. When he had recovered from the shock, he turned to face Squall, noting the satisfied smirk on the brunette's lips.

"Y-You did that on purpose! I can't believe you!" he hissed, narrowing his green eyes. Before Seifer could do anything, Mr. Garrison was already standing behind his back, staring at the hole in the table.

"I thought I told you, acid is dangerous, Mr. Almasy." the teacher noted. Seifer turned around and opened his mouth to defend himself, but Mr. Garrison didn't allow him that. "You should be glad it's the table that looks like a swiss-cheese, and not your hand." The teacher began to walk back towards his desk, leaving Seifer alone with Squall. "Are you sure it's this chemistry course you want to repeat, and not the elementary course instead?" he mocked and returned back to writing stuff onto the blackboard. It took all of Seifer's willpower to restrain himself and keep quiet. After taking a deep breath, he turned in Squall's direction, and gripped the boy by his wrist. The look on Squall's face was a surprised one when Seifer forced him to finally meet his eyes and listen.

"Squall. I know you're mad, and obviously want revenge, but this is going too far!" the older boy hissed, looking Squall straight in the eye, his face serious. "I've already told you I'm sorry. And don't you think this black eye proves you also got your revenge!?"

The look on Squall's face began to soften, and was suddenly showing regret. He parted his lips to speak, but before he could say anything, they were interrupted by the teacher. "This is getting impossible! Mr. Almasy, I am forced to ask you to leave the classroom and come back when you learn to keep quiet, and not disturb other's work. I will not tolerate you speaking on my class unless I give you the permission." Mr. Garrison announced with a voice not to be argued with. Seifer squeezed his eyes shut and balled his hands into fists.

'Drop dead already, you fucking nihilist!' he cursed in his mind and reluctantly let go of Squall's hand. The brunette met Seifer's eyes, the look on his face showing something resembling forgiveness for the first time. He watched as Seifer picked up his school bag and marched out of the classroom, making his protest by closing the door with a loud bang.
