I awoke to constricting heat around my neck. Gasping, I felt for my collar. It was tight, too tight. I felt it squeezing me. Panicked, I fumbled for the button Michael showed me. In seconds Hojo appeared at my bedside. He saw me scrabbling and choking. Swooping down, he hit a series of buttons. Suddenly, the tightness stopped.
I watched him stride into his office. He punched a few keys on his computer in rapid sequence, his face drawn and mouth a thin line. My collar simply dropped off.
“Michael?” he called out, his finger on his intercom.
“Here,” came a raspy voice. “Sir.”
“Alison?”
“Here, sir,” came another stressed voice.
“Jean?”
“Here, sir.”
“All three of you come up to my office immediately, in a group,” he commanded, letting go of the button. He came back to me. “Miss Grey?”
“I’m alright, thank you, sir,” I said faintly.
Hojo wrapped his warm hands around my neck very gently and probed me a little. I heard him give a little sigh of relief. Suddenly, he crouched in front of me. “It will not happen again,” he said.
I believed him. He was upset,. His eyes showed it. His whole body showed it. He seemed to vibrate with anger and concern.
“Do you have a robe?”
I reached over the other side of the bed and grabbed the warm, fuzzy robe Michael had picked out for me. I put it on.
“Good,” he said, “come out into the office, my dear.”
I followed him. He gestured for me to sit and I obeyed. In a few minutes Michael, Jean and Alison entered. All three had red circles on their necks. They carried their collars. Hojo collected the things and began to examine throats one by one, starting with Alison.
The pretty redhead stood patiently, but I saw worry in her eyes.
Michael’s eyes sought Hojo’s as the scientist felt his throat.
Jean almost seemed indifferent, but I noticed at the last how relieved he looked when Hojo nodded.
Hojo brought out a container of burn salve and treated us. I was last. He looked into my eyes as his gentle fingers spread a cooling slickness over my skin.
“I didn’t do it,” he told us a moment later. “But, the person who did will suffer for it.” His voice, low and terrible, continued. “Does anyone here have an insight?”
Michael shivered. “Sir, I taunted some techs on the way in here tonight,” he volunteered.
“I spilled coffee on Carson, sir, by accident,” Alison told him.
“I hit some tech with my mop handle, but it was an accident, sir,” Jean answered.
“I don’t think I did anything, sir,” I said.
Hojo looked up a moment. “Oh yes, killing offenses, all,” he grumbled. He looked at me. “You have Miss Grey to thank for not being dead right now, by the way. Why didn’t I get a panic response from all of you?”
“Sir, I was asleep,” Alison said, blushing. “And the choking just sort of went along with my dream.”
“I thought I was imagining it until it was too late, sir,” Jean said.
“I was having sex and didn’t want to stop, sir,” Michael answered, blushing more deeply than Alison.
Hojo shook his head sharply, like he couldn’t believe what he’d heard. “Holy shit, boy,” he said. “There are better ways to keep your cock hard.”
Alison tittered.
“Nothing out of you, Missy,” Hojo said. “I happen to know from Jefferson you like being choked. You were probably content to dream yourself into strangulation oblivion.” He walked to his desk and brought out four metal bracelets. “Hold out your non-dominant arm,” he commanded us. “These are not main-line coupled.”
We received our new governors quietly. I looked at mine, noticing it also had a green light panic button.
“Your marks should be gone by afternoon tomorrow,” Hojo went on. “If you have anything to report to me, don’t hesitate.”
“Yes, sir,” we chorused.
“Keep an eye on each other as well. Your bracelets are intercoms; you can talk to each other with them.” He took a fifth bracelet, a black one, and put it on his right wrist. “And, to me,” he added, snapping it shut. “Until we find the person or persons responsible, stay on your guard.”
Again we gave our assent.
“Good.” Hojo eyed us all. “I’m sure you realize the attack could have been only for me. Loosing all of you in one shot would look like a plus to someone who has it out for me, and I have no end of enemies. I would not normally be here right now, which lends credence to that supposition.” He put his hands behind his back and looked down, a sign he was thinking hard. “Until I find out who the saboteur is, I will be here. You will not be alone.”
I heard Alison give a sigh of relief. I felt comforted, too. He meant business.
“You may all return to your various perversions,” Hojo told us.
Alison and Michael, grinning, left first. Jean followed.
“Miss Grey,” Hojo said, motioning me to stay seated. He pulled his desk chair out and put it opposite me, sitting. “The timing here is significant in two other ways. Can you imagine to what I refer?”
“I’m the newest.” I didn’t like this line of thought. “I’ve also been fairly close to you since you…took me on, sir.”
“Exactly.” He took his glasses off and put them in his front pocket. “And, since this mechanized murder could happen at any time…?”
I thought about it. “They don’t know you’re here, probably,” I said. “Either that or they’re ignorant of the panic buttons.”
“Or, overconfident their method would succeed,” he finished. He scooted back. “Get used to having me in here at night and to spending your entire day with me. I don’t anticipate swift justice, much as I desire it.” He gave me a close look. “Are you able to go back to sleep?”
“Maybe, sir. I don’t know. Please don’t dose me with anything.”
“I respect that.” Hojo got up. “If you change your mind, seek me out.”
“I will, sir.” I also got up. Feeling a little shaky, I returned to my bed. In the morning, when I had time to think, I was sure to do too much thinking. Right now I felt almost numb.
