Tifa looked out the window again as she walked by from serving a table in the back. Cloud had gotten back about twenty minutes ago and Vincent shouldn’t be far behind. She was about to turn away from the window when lights swept the side of the building before a black SUV pulled by the window. She smiled and spun in a quick motion to run back to the front door. She was going to greet Vincent as she always did. At the door with a smile. Cloud was about to find out anyways.
The door opened and Tifa’s smile faltered some at first. It wasn’t Vincent. The man looked vaguely familiar but it wasn’t Vincent.
“Welcome to Seventh Heaven.” She said, her smile a little more forced.
“Um… Yeah. Thanks.” The man said.
Tifa turned from the man and made her way back to the bar. She didn’t see the other three men coming into the bar behind him. Cloud smiled at her as she reached the bar.
“Hey Tif… I need to take the trash out. You got everything handled for a second?”
“Actually,” She grabbed the trash bag before he could. “I need a small break and taking the trash out would be good for me.”
Cloud tilted his head slightly to the right as he looked her over. “Alright then. I got the bar. Take your time.”
Tifa nodded and grabbed the other trash bag. She knew Cloud just thought she was getting sick again. She had already ran to the bathroom three times since the bar opened. Cloud had offered her a shot but she declined, not willing to see how her already upset stomach would handle the liquor.
She passed the man who had come in when she thought it was Vincent on her way pass the bathrooms to the back door. The man was so familiar to her that it sent shivers down her spine as she walked by him. She shrugged it off and kicked the back screen door open as she made her way to the dumpsters.
The air was starting to cool. Winter would be here soon. She was going to have to go invest in more clothes. Tonight she would grab some of her winter clothes from her room but she didn’t have much. She never really went outside during the winter before so there had been no need to invest in warm clothes. Now she would be going out daily to come to work. She smiled as she thought about her relationship with Vincent.
She had been meeting him every day at the front door since he had started work. It felt good to make dinner and have someone come home and sweep her off her feet with a kiss and a hug. His smile was angelic and precious to her. She knew only she received that kind of smile from him.
Tifa was so focused on her thoughts that she almost didn’t see the fist coming for her face. On instinct, she jumped up and back. She hadn’t reacted fast enough to keep from being hit though. The fist landed hard and fast to the side of her stomach. Tifa landed a few feet from the man, crouched down in an attacking position. He ribs burned but she wasn’t about to stop. She looked up to see her attacker was the man she had greeted at the front door.
Now she recognized the man. He was one of the men who had fought her the night Vincent showed up. She was about to jump towards him when three more men came from inside the building, coming around to circle her. Even if she called for Cloud, there was no way he was going to hear her over the bar’s noise level.
“Look here girlie,” The man who had hit her said. “We don’t want no trouble. What happened that night was just a big misunderstanding.”
“Then why are you here? I told you all not to come back.” Tifa gritted out.
“Seems Charles went missing and the boss doesn’t like that. Last he was seen was the night we left here.” He replied.
“Said he was gonna come back here the next day and handle you when we dropped him off. Hasn’t been heard from since.” This came from one of the men behind her.
“We just want Charles back. Or you can show us where you and that creature put his body.” The first man said.
“Do not ever call him a creature.”
Tifa flung her body at the man standing in front of her, catching him about his waist and bringing him to the ground with her. She moved quickly to stand on him as soon as they hit the ground. She didn’t hesitate pushing off his chest roughly, jumping again to do a flip and land a good distance from everyone.
From this position she had all four men in her line of sight. Charles must have been the one who had originally touched her. He was the only one missing.
The man held his hand up to the other men as he stood. “My name’s Michael. You have two days to find Charles or tell me where his body is. In two days, if I haven’t gotten him, we’re coming back and killing blondie in there while you sleep. Then we’ll be after you and that creature.” He dropped a white card on the ground. “Tell blondie or the creature and we’ll blow this place up. And we will know.”
Michael motioned to the men and they started walking away. Tifa watched them leave, her blood boiling but not because of their threats or because of their accusations. She was pissed that he kept calling Vincent a creature. Warped logic kept her more angry on the personal attack of Vincent then all of their safety.
“One more thing.” Michael turned to face her.
Before Tifa could react, he pulled something from his jacket and threw it at her. Her body instant started convulsing and she felt as if she had been set on fire. She was in to much pain to even scream as her mind erupted with pure agony. Then, just as fast as it started, it was over. She was on the ground, her hands raw from scrapping along the parking lot. She curled herself into a ball. Not caring anymore if they were coming back to hurt her.
Michael smiled at the sight of Tifa curled on the ground. So much for the tough as nails fighter in AVALANCHE. He had done his research before coming back to confront the group for Charlie’s disappearance. What luck would have her going outside as he left the restroom? Even better luck that she didn’t remember him. She wouldn’t be forgetting him again any time soon.
Tifa barely kept herself from crying as she stayed curled into a tight ball. Her stomach did a sudden lunge upwards and she scrambled to her knees before she started heaving again. This time, she was sure, her sickness had nothing to do with the bad milk. She tried to stand after emptying her stomach but her legs were too weak to do so and she collapsed again a little ways from where she had originally fallen.
She didn’t try to get up again. She just laid there and waited for her body to recover from whatever he had done to her. She looked to the card, laying within arms reach of her. She reached out and grasped the card, sliding it into her pocket before wrapping her arms around her mid section. She had to find this Charles before they came back to follow through on their promise.

Vincent pulled into Seventh Heaven, parking next to a vehicle similar to his. He got out and headed for the door, barely looking at the four men coming from around the side of the building. He opened the door and walked in. It didn’t take long to see Tifa was not in the main room. Cloud stood behind the bar, his back to Vincent. Thinking maybe Tifa was in the bathroom sick, he strode over and pulled himself up onto one of the bar stools.
Cloud turned to face him with a few drinks in his hand, his eyes coming to rest on Vincent before his lips twitched slightly in a very small smile.
“Let me take these over to that table and I will be right with you.”
Vincent nodded and Cloud made his way through the customers to the table, passing the drinks out before returning.
“What will it be?” Cloud asked.
“Just water, please.”
Cloud nodded, reaching under the counter quickly to produce a tumbler. He filled the tumbler with water and dropped in a few ice cubes before passing it to Vincent.
“On the house.”
“Thanks.” Vincent looked around the room again, searching for Tifa.
“So what brings you here?” Cloud asked while washing some of the glasses in the sink before him.
Vincent turned his attention back to Cloud. Obviously Tifa hadn’t told him. That seemed to dampen Vincent’s mood a lot more than he had thought possible. Why hadn’t she told him yet? Was she ashamed of their relationship?
“Just left a school meeting.”
“Oh yeah. Tifa mentioned something about you being an English teacher.”
Vincent nodded to Cloud. No question was asked so he let his mind wonder over things. Would Tifa truly be coming back home with him or would she be staying here. Had coming back to Cloud made her regret him? Did any of it matter? No. It would hurt him if she chose to stay with Cloud, but he could never be angry at her.
Vincent shook his head and stood up. He motioned to his drink and then to Cloud in an unspoken question. Cloud nodded and Vincent turned, making his way to the bathrooms. He couldn’t get mad at Tifa but Cloud was fair game. But hurting Cloud would hurt Tifa. And that he would never do.
Vincent looked up, noticing the back door was open. He bypassed the bathroom and walked to shut the door. He was about to close the door when he noticed the dark figure laying in the parking lot. A longer look revealed that figure to be Tifa.
“Cloud, close the bar!!” He yelled over his shoulder as he ran full out towards Tifa.
Under normal circumstances, Cloud would have never listened to Vincent. He wasn’t used to being told what to do. But the sound of panic in Vincent’s voice had Cloud rushing customers out the door and locking it behind the last. He ran to the back where Vincent had called to him from. He found Vincent outside with a woman in his arms.
It wasn’t until Vincent got to the door that Cloud noticed the woman was Tifa. Vincent was visibly paler than normal and Tifa looked worse for words. The faint smell of vomit arose from the two as Vincent made his way back inside.
Vincent had ran to Tifa, not noticing he had kneeled in her puke until after he had stood with her in his arms. There was a faint flutter mixed with her heart beat. Vincent wiped a table clear with one hand before setting Tifa down gently. Cloud returned to his side with heal materia in his hands.
Vincent let Cloud use the heal materia on Tifa as he soaked a clean wash cloth in cool water. He returned to the two and started wiping Tifa’s head. Tifa opened her eyes and smiled at Vincent.
Tifa looked from Vincent to Cloud, before she sat up quickly, barely missing Cloud as she puked off the side of the table again. This time her vomit was a bright green color. She dry heaved a few more minutes before laying back down.
“Sorry.” She said weakly.
“I got sick again.” She lied. Not opening her eyes to look at them.
Vincent tilted his head slightly. Her heart rate had sped when she answered and she had yet to open her eyes. Years as a Turk had taught Vincent to know the signs of someone lying, and this was no different.
Tifa felt terrible for lying to them but what choice did she have? The card had been from Denzel and Marlene’s school. On the back was a number with no name. She had assumed it was Michael’s number since he left it. The message was clear though. They knew where Marlene and Denzel went to school and were willing to use the children in any way they could.
“Oh. You scared us.” Cloud said. Clearly relieved.
Tifa opened her eyes, looking at the relief buried deep in his eyes. When she turned to Vincent, she saw his mistrust. Or was that her guilt? Honestly she couldn’t tell. He didn’t look relieved though. She turned away from Vincent quickly, slowly climbing off the table.
“Cloud,” Vincent said, his eyes never leaving Tifa as he reached into his pocket. “Can you get the back pack out of my SUV, please?” He asked.
Cloud nodded slowly, taking the man’s keys before reluctantly walking away. It made no sense why Vincent wanted him to go to the vehicle. But he had found Tifa so he figured he could at least give the man this. Whatever this was.
Vincent waited until he heard the door close behind Cloud before speaking.
“Tifa?”
“Yes, Vincent?” She still didn’t turn to look at him.
“What happened?”
Tifa shook her head. She couldn’t bring herself to lie to him again. The first time had been hard enough. And now she was going to have to send him home. With out her. And with no good reason for her staying. She already knew the thoughts that were going to come into his mind.
And that’s when it came to her. The only way to get Vincent away from here with out him being in danger was to make him think she didn’t want him around anymore. She couldn’t let whatever had been done to her happen to Vincent. And she couldn’t drag him into this mess. She was about to hurt him and he may never forgive her.
She started crying and placed her hands over her face to keep from making any sound. She knew Vincent would hear it anyways. Just as she knew he would know if she was lying before Cloud ever would.
“I’m sorry, Vincent.” She sniffled.
She had actually been apologizing for having to hurt him but when she turned to face him, she seen the hurt in his eyes and knew he had taken it for the lie she was about to spill. It was almost enough to make her break down and tell him the truth. But she couldn’t do that. She had to protect him.
“I am not going with you. I am going to stay here. There are some things I need to get done. And I am just not sure anymore on where I stand.”
Vincent blinked a few times. Willing him self not to be angry. Not to turn her to face him and demand to know why she was doing this to them. In the end he said the only thing he could.
“I will be here when you need me. I love you.” And he walked away.
Tifa lost control at that point. Crying as she never had before. Even all the times she had cried over Cloud had not been as bad as this. This felt like someone had just ripped her world to shreds. Her shoulders rocked with her tears but she kept enough control on herself not to break into wrecking sobs.
Vincent closed the door behind him, brushing past Cloud and relieving the blonde from the bag and his keys. Cloud gave Vincent a questioning glance but turned his attention else where at the cold glare he received from the man. It was the same look he had seen in Vincent’s eyes the day they went against Sephiroth.
Cloud stood on the door step and watched as Vincent got in his vehicle and spun out. Leaving very fast. Cloud shook his head at the mans sudden change in behavior before going back inside. Tifa stood by the table, her head rested in her hands.
“What’s his problem?” Cloud asked her.
Tifa spun around quickly to face Cloud, tears streaming in steady rivulets down her cheeks.
“Fuck you, Cloud. None of this would have been a problem had you been here that night. Where the fuck were you? Out throwing another of your childish tantrums?”
Tifa couldn’t control her tears anymore. She broke out into those wrecking sobs. She knew it was wrong but somehow she couldn’t stop herself from blaming Cloud. Had he not ran from her when she had kissed him, he would have been here the night she was attacked by the men. More than likely the men wouldn’t have attacked if he had been here. She wasn’t regretting hers and Vincent’s relationship, just now that everything was being yanked from her. Vincent would never forgive her for this. No matter how much he loved her. And she knew he loved her a lot. Just as she loved him.
“Tifa, What did I do?”
“Just stay the fuck away from me, Cloud.” She sobbed.
Cloud stood, dumbstruck, as Tifa took off at a run up the stairs. Still crying. After a few seconds he heard her bedroom door slam shut. He sighed and looked around the bar. He then looked at his keys hanging behind the counter. He should leave. Give Tifa some space and let him regroup and figure out what was going on. The sounds of Tifa’s door opening pulled him from his thoughts.
“If you leave, Cloud, I will never forgive you and you can just stay gone. You leaving all the time is what got us in this mess.”
“What mess?” He yelled back.
It was eerie how she seemed to have read his thoughts on that one.
“Just leave Cloud. Stay gone a few days. I will be fine.” Her answer was calm with only the slight sound of tears.
Clouds own anger mounted. He wasn’t sure what was going on but he had a few things he wanted to talk to Vincent about because he was sure her problems were laced with his problems. Only, he didn’t know where Vincent lived. He snatched his keys from the hook before making his way outside. Locking the door behind him before going to Fenrir. He mounted the bike, longing for the peaceful escape the bike granted him. He peeled off out of the parking lot. Much like Vincent had done and heading the same way Vincent had gone. With luck he would catch up to the Gunman and just follow him home. Or convince him to pull over.
Tifa watched Cloud leave from her bedroom window. The idea had struck her as she was telling him not to leave. Now she had a plan. She was sure she and Vincent hadn’t had anything to do with this Charles person disappearing. Her goal now was to make sure everyone was safely away before she put the next part of her plan into action.
She sighed and picked up her cell phone. Vincent and Cloud were safe. Now to secure Marlene and Denzel. She called Barrett. It was late but the man would more than likely be awake.
“Yeah?” Barrett answered on the third ring.
“Barrett, its Tifa.”
“Hi. How is everything going?” He asked.
“Actually it is going pretty bad. I could really use a favor from you.”
“Anything at all. If I can help you know I will.” His answer was quick with no hesitation.
“How soon can you get to Seventh Heaven?”
“I can be there in a few hours.”
“I need someone to take Marlene and Denzel, and I need to make sure this doesn’t get to anyone but you and I.”
“No can do on that last part.” Barrett said sadly. “Nanaki and Yuffie are here with me. We’re going to Cid’s tomorrow.”
“Can we keep this from Cloud and Vincent then?”
“That we can.” There was a pause before he spoke again. “Tifa, are you sure you got this? If you need me… For anything… I can be there in a few hours.”
“I can handle the rest on my own. I just need Marlene and Denzel safe and for Cloud and Vincent not to find out.”
“Consider it done. Want us to leave now or in the morning?”
“Now would be great.”
“Then we’ll be there in a few hours.”
The line went dead and Tifa set her cell aside. Using everything she had left in her she went to the bathroom. She had to go get the kids from the babysitter and then send them off with Barrett. She would see about Nanaki staying with her since Cloud was gone. Things didn’t effect him the same way it effected humans. And with his empowered senses, she would have more warning for whatever was coming. She straightened her appearance in the mirror after donning a fresh set of clothes. She would shower later. Other pressing matters needed to be handled first.
Vincent stood under Tifa’s window. He hadn’t been able to stamp down his curiosity and had returned shortly after leaving. He had heard the tail end of Cloud and Tifa arguing. Had heard her tell him not to leave only to change her mind and send him on, He was about to make his presence known when he heard Tifa make a call. He listened intently on that call.
Something was going on and she was unwilling to get him and Cloud involved. But it scared her enough to send the kids away as well as himself and Cloud. Something about her attitude towards him had seemed fake. And that’s why he had come back. Now he knew Cloud wouldn’t be back for a few days if he listened to her, which he probably would. Vincent would be coming to the house every night to make sure she was safe. Unlike Cloud, he couldn’t leave her like that. Even if she wanted him too.
For now he had to go. Barrett was on his way and the last he had heard from Barrett, Nanaki was with him. Nanaki would know the moment they arrived that Vincent was there.
Just as Vincent started walking back towards his vehicle, he heard the front door open. He stepped back into the shadows and watched as Tifa locked the door. She stopped, turned towards the direction of his home and sighed.
“I love you, Vincent. And I will be home soon. If you’ll have me.” She turned and started walking in the opposite direction.
Vincent pressed himself against the building more as she passed by him, only a couple of feet from him. His heart both broke and soared at her words. He was elated that she still loved him and that she still considered his home their home. It hurt him to know she thought she had ended their relationship. Had he not come back, it probably would have ended it. But he wouldn’t give up that easily on her.
