“AHHH!” He screamed as his body became solid again, falling onto the hard concrete in front of him. “Son of a bitch! I hate that part.” He said to himself as he regained his balance and adjusted his jacket.
The streets were quiet. Empty, even. It was late. He looked around for any sign of activity. All he saw before him were dark houses and dim street lamps but he decided to walk around. He headed toward the area where Hope had designed new housing for his friends from New Bodhum.
There he saw them. Everyone. Sitting around a big bonfire, roasting food and drinking beer. His heart felt like it was going to explode with joy. ‘They all made it.’ Tears filled his eyes as he listened to the laughter filling the air. He stood in the shadows and watched in silence. He had been through hell to get back there but, after seeing how happy everyone was, he didn’t care about his struggles. He didn’t care about the pointless battles he had to endure.
For two weeks, maybe more, he had fought tooth and nail to return. He had dozens of fresh cuts all over his body but he was always so focused that he never paid them any attention. It wasn’t until that moment that a sharp pain radiated from his back. He collapsed and groaned loudly.
He grew the attention of a small child playing nearby. Her tiny hands gently touched his arm. “Help! Mr. Snow!”.
Noel ran quickly to the girl to discover his badly injured friend laying on the ground. “Snow!
You’re…alive.” His hands turned a light green color as he conjured a healing spell.
Hope and Sazh soon joined his side, adding to the spell. They carefully placed their hands on whatever exposed skin they could find and ejected their power.
Snow groaned as he felt his injuries closing. He felt lighter for a moment, he was quickly returning to lucidity. His eyes wandering around looking at the sea of faces smiling at him.
“Welcome back, hero.” Sazh said sarcastically. “When you gonna learn to slow down and let your friends carry some of that weight?” He asked as he extended his hand to lift Snow to his feet.
“A hero doesn’t run from a fight. What can I say?” He asked as he slammed his fists together and smiled. He reached over to Hope and roughed up his hair. “It’s good to be back. So…” He turned and flashed a toothy grin to Amaya. “You’re the one who saved me, eh?” He picked her up and spun her around. Her tiny giggled filled the air, making everyone laugh.
“You bet I did!” She said excitedly as she squealed with joy.
“My hero…” He said as he hugged her. “Thank you.”
He couldn’t explain why he felt so connected to her. It was a new feeling for him. All he knew is that he had this overwhelming need to protect her. He gently set her down and turned to Noel.
“So, kid. Did you save a bed for me?” He asked as he nervously scratched his hair hidden under his bandana.
“I’m not a kid, jackass.” He laughed. “Of course we did.” Noel smiled as he led Snow to the small ground floor apartment they’d soon be sharing.
The apartment was bare, only essentials occupied the space. There was no TV, just a small tablet that Hope insisted that Noel keep. There was a black leather sofa and a matching love seat sitting around a small wooden coffee table that looked handmade with scattered papers and weapons sitting on top.
“Nice place.” His husky voice broke the silence as Noel sat down at the kitchen island.
“It’s better than nothing. Trust me.” He joked, not sure if it was too soon to make such jokes or not. He nervously nodded at the fridge. “There’s plenty of food. Sazh keeps me pretty well stocked. Well, I’m not sure if it’s for me or him but either way, there’s plenty to choose from.”
“I’m not hungry.” Snow said as he kneeled to untie his boots.
“You really must have gone through hell to get here.” He teased.
“Something like that…” He kicked off his loose boots and removed his coat and placed it on the back of the chair next to Noel. As it landed, Noel was alerted by a thud hitting the cushion below the discarded coat.
He squinted as picked up the thing that fell. It was the crystal heart he saw Hope give to Snow a while ago.
“You dropped this.” Noel said as he slid it across the counter toward him. He opened his hand and
caught it, smiling as it touched his skin.
“This…this is what brought me home.” He admitted proudly.
“What do you mean?” Noel asked as he raised an eyebrow and leaned over the counter.
“I can’t really explain passed that point. It just…did.” Snow seemed more serious than usual and Noel took note of the darkness that was turning his friends eyes into a darker blue.
“Ya know, there was a legend from my time. The legend of soul stones. Everyone was supposed to have one and, if they were lucky, they’d not only find theirs but maybe even the one that matched.” Noel said as his eyes locked on the crystal heart that Snow held onto.
“A soul stone, huh?” Snow asked as he gently ran his fingers across the cold surface.
“It was just a story parents told their kids but,” He continued. “If that is the reason you were able to get back here…maybe...” He shrugged and stood up. “Maybe there is truth behind the lore.” Noel headed off to his bed, leaving Snow to his thoughts.
‘Light…did you…is this…your soul stone? Did you send it to me to guide me home?’ He asked himself. His heart raced at the thought. For hours, he sat there having secret talks with Lightning. He thanked her and told her how much he missed her. He knew, deep down, he would some day see her again and he would fight for that day.
