Upon arriving home, I collapsed in a heap on the sofa. I was so tired. I shouldn’t have gotten up so early. But at least now I was away from him, so I wouldn’t have to explain myself. The last thing I wanted was more awkwardness. If I’d have stayed, the situation wouldn’t have exactly been straightforward. The bottle of whisky he was now closely acquainted with should do all the explaining for me. Hopefully he’d be too drunk to remember anything. Ah, the wonders of alcohol.
I rolled on to my side and closed my eyes, trying my best to relax. Ok, this leather sofa was proving to be very uncomfortable to sleep on. It was cold and hard. I had a perfectly good bed upstairs, so why was I still down here? I sighed and somehow found the strength to push myself up from the cushions and get to my feet. Staggering a little, I made my way towards the stairs. It was still early. I suppose I could spend another couple of hours in bed, or maybe a couple of more minutes, just until my brain decided to work properly again. What the hell was I thinking last night? I wasn’t supposed to stay that long. I’d gotten too involved.
Discarding my clothes on the landing, I eagerly advanced towards my bedroom. The house keeper can pick those up, that’s what she’s paid for. I closed the bedroom door behind me and sighed. Whatever happens, I’ll sort it out later. Right now, I needed SLEEP! Darknation’s ears twitched at the sound as she slowly raised her head; she was on my bed, devotedly awaiting my return. As soon as she spotted me, she speedily bounced towards me, knocking into my legs and causing me to fall back against the wall. Her weight had thrown me off balance. For gods’ sake, I’ve been gone for one night. What the hell are you going to do if I go away for a weekend? She growled gently and rubbed against my trousers, happy I’d returned to her safely. I rolled my eyes and stumbled towards the bed, too tired to shoo her away. Stupid creature.

Argh, I hate being late, things always go wrong when you’re late. It had been a hectic morning already. Not only had I slept in, but I had a board meeting to attend this afternoon. Was I prepared for it, WAS I HELL! Juggling my documents within my arms, I passed Tseng by the elevator. He realized it was me and quickly turned to follow.
“Do you need a hand there, sir?” He asked smugly, observing my notable difficulty.
“No, I’m fine.” I answered sharply. I wasn’t fine actually, but I didn’t want to accept his help. I was perfectly capable of struggling by myself.
“Sir, may I speak with you at some point today?” Tseng inquired eagerly.
I sighed and turned to face him, “Tseng, I’m very busy…”
He nodded and knelt down to pick up the papers I’d manage to accidentally drop. I growled and knelt down too to retrieve them, but more papers fell from my arms in the process. He scooped them up before I could reach and handing them back to me, he smiled. I snatched them from him and glared.
“Fine, Tseng. What do you want?”
“There was something that I wanted to ask you last night, but never got around to asking. I was just wondering what time would be appropriate for you.”
I raised an eyebrow at him. “Excuse me. What are you talking about?”
Before he could speak, I rose to my feet, flicking the hair from my eyes; I narrowed them coldly at Tseng. He began staring at me suspiciously, searching my face for clarity.
“What? I have no idea of what you’re talking about. What is it that you actually want? I’m really busy and really need to get on with things.”
“Sir-” He started, but our conversation was cut short by Elena as she hurried hastily up to Tseng. She tugged on his suit jacket and wheezed. “There you are, Tseng. Mr. Heidegger needs to speak with you.”
Tseng turned his head to glare at her, dangerously lowering his tone. He didn’t seem best pleased with her sudden interruption. “Elena. I’m engaging in conversation with the president. Can’t this wait?”
“No time, just hurry” She grabbed hold of Tseng sleeve and dragged him to his feet. He was pulled away so fast, that he didn’t even get a chance to apologize for the sudden departure. Well, her manners certainly could do with work. She didn’t even excuse her impoliteness. How rude. Not that I’m complaining, it saved me the effort of dealing with Tseng. But still, a little courtesy wouldn’t go a miss.
Watching the two Turks disappear out of sight down the adjacent corridor, I swiftly made my way towards my office and grinned. Good old Heidegger, he does have his uses.

I was sat in the board meeting, I’d only been here for twenty minutes and already I was falling asleep. I tried to organize a conference every month, to monitor how each of the different departments progressed. In theory it was a good idea, but in reality…it was tedious as hell. There had been a few meetings held this month, a few too many in my opinion. I suppose I didn’t have a choice in the matter. I’d rather be told things than have them going on behind my back. That was my father’s problem. He just let things run in the background, not even bothering to take note of intended proposals and terminating things that wasted money or just went wrong. He put too much trust into these people. I on the other hand, trusted no one.
Proceeding around the table, each head of department gave their overall review. This was the time to discuss further advancements or misgivings with me. All seemed well, so far. No problems had occurred- yet. I glanced about the room, looking around in intrigue, desperate for something to concentration on. Professor Hojo was speaking at the moment. His voice had started to annoy me. It was so dreary and scratchy, and science wasn’t my area of expertise. He had failed to evoke my interest with his current research, reading from his notes, declaring his latest scientific deduction. My short attention span had just recently depleted, unable to take much more. I was so bored.
My eyes wandered down the table, instantly noticing Heidegger. He was continually leaning over to whisper to Tseng who was sat by his side, nodding in accordance. I allowed my eyebrow to rise. What was he doing here? It’s very rare the Turks sat in on these meetings. They only attended to give out observed information, and this was a department conference. His opinion had no business here.
I stared at them apprehensively, watching their actions, wondering why his attendance was required. Oh, what’s this? I stared at Heidegger, lowering my eyes, paying close attention to his arm. Looks like Heidegger’s got a slight ‘problem’ with his right hand. How interesting.
It was bandaged from the tips of the fingers and disappeared under the sleeve of his coat. I assume that was the reason for Tseng’s presence, to write down notes and aid with visuals, because Heidegger was currently unable to for himself. That will explain why Tseng had been rashly removed from my side this morning, Heidegger required his assistance. Why on earth did Heidegger need to document things anyway? If he paid attention, he wouldn’t need to write anything down. Speaking of which, I better nod my head a couple of times to give the impression that I’m still interested. Yeah, good… seems to have done the trick.
ARGH, crap! Slapping my hand over my neck, my eyes narrowed in annoyance. My sudden movement had triggered it off again. My neck and my shoulder, they were both aching like hell. Damn, I’d managed to ignore it up until now.
I found myself constantly rubbing them again, trying to relieve the annoyance. They had been tokens of affection Tseng had left towards me; imprints in my shoulder of his perfect straight teeth. I had to try my best to keep them hidden. If anyone saw them, then I was in trouble. I don’t think they’d believe me if I told him it had been the work of vampires. Luckily, my coat covered the evidence, but the material still irritated the skin beneath. Although, this now worked in my favour, the soreness was the only thing keeping me awake at this point.
I sighed, sitting back. Now this brings back bad memories, being stared at from across the table by him. Don’t think I can’t see you, Tseng. I’d have to be blind not to notice. I understand why he does it now, he can’t help but look. Still, it doesn’t stop me from being made to feel awkward by it. I don’t like people staring, it makes me uncomfortable. Well, at least I know his intentions aren’t of malicious tendencies now. Not that this changes anything, we still had a slight predicament to resolve. He seems to have developed a sort of ‘perverse admiration’ towards me. One, I can’t help but provoke. Although, we will have to rectify this quickly, set some rules, before it gets out of hand. I can’t stop myself from glancing over at him…why do I keep giving in to curiosity? So he’s probably staring at me again, SO WHAT? That’s nothing new. Why do I keep influencing his actions by looking back? I’m only encouraging him, there’s a time and a place for that.
For god’s sake, Rufus STOP RUBBING IT, you’re attracting attention to yourself. Ok, I’ll admit, it was fun. But we have to be serious now, this can’t go on. It’s very unprofessional, and more to the point; we’re both MEN! It just feels wrong. A one-off occurrence is fine, it can be forgotten about. So let’s start forgetting about it right now. I gritted my teeth together and sat on my hands, to stop myself from aggravating the abrasion. Making myself look mildly interested in what was being said, I nodded in reply.
Hojo returned to his seat and it was now Heidegger’s turn to speak. Taking the annotations from Tseng, he stood up from his place; gesturing towards the display screen, he drew everyone’s attention towards it. The display flickered on and he began reading from the penciled remarks, clearing his throat before he began. I narrowed my eyes and watched with anger, clearly NOT impressed. Oh, so that’s what the notes were for. You weren’t kidding when you said that Tseng practically does all of the work for you. We’ll have to have words about that.
Just as Heidegger was delivering the last part of his first sentence, Scarlet abruptly intervened.
“What happened to your hand, Heidegger? …Looks rather painful.” Scarlet enquired with false concern, interrupting right in the middle of his pitch. I think it was more out of interest than anything else. Heidegger blushed, and hid the hand in question behind his back, concealing it from view.
“It was an accident…nothing serious. Anywa-”
I leaned forwards, placing my elbow upon the desk. Resting my chin in my hand, I smiled slightly in response.
“Working the old wrist too hard last night were we, Heidegger? Well, at least there won’t be any complaints about the noise from the neighbours’ tonight.” I smugly added, getting an amused response from the rest of the room. Tseng averted his eyes, struggling to compose himself, yet his face remained reasonably straight. Heidegger cough, hoping to regain the silence, yet his efforts went unnoticed. As soon as my hand was raised, silence was instantly received.
Scarlet cackled “Aww, that’s too bad. But he’s got a Turk here now to help, so I’m sure the neighbours will still get their show.”
I grinned, trying to calm everyone down, the whole board started to snigger hysterically in response. Turning to Scarlet I smiled, humorously narrowing my eyes.
“Now, Scarlet… Behave yourself.”
She nodded, happily sighing “Of course, Rufus.”
Keeping my eyes on Tseng’s expression, I couldn’t help but laugh. He was glaring at Scarlet with enforced anger, shaking his head in appall. She simply smiled and leaned back in her chair, happy with the reaction she’d received. She too, loved nothing more than to wind Heidegger up. Heidegger had turned bright red, through embarrassment rather than rage. His volume suddenly increased as he yelled. “A DOOR, I TRAPPED IT IN THE BLOODY CAR DOOR! Can I please continue without any more interruptions?”
“As you were saying, Heidegger…” I smiled, muffling my amusement whilst gesturing him to continue.
Well, this meeting wasn’t turning out to be so boring after all.

My extension rang and I groaned. Placing down my pen, I reached for the phone. I’m seriously considering unplugging this thing; it hasn’t stopped ringing all day. Tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear, I took in a deep breath and lifted the handset to speak.
“What now?”
It was my secretary. “A Turk is here to see you, sir”
“Send him in” I ordered, calmly replacing the phone. There was no need to ask, it was pretty obvious which one it was. And my assumption was correct, Tseng walked into my office moments later. He lowered his head in respectful response.
“Sir, are you busy?”
“Always, but I’m willing to make some time…if it is of importance. Now, what can I do for you?”
He gestured to a chair and I motioned him to sit. Advancing forwards, he took hold of the seat, bringing it closer and sitting down mere inches from me, he made himself comfortable.
“So?” I added, breaking the silence we seemed to have created. I picked up my pen and continued writing. “What do you want?”
“I’m just a bit confused, about…current activities. I’d like to clear the air if I may.”
“Go on” I urged.
“Rufus, if I’ve upset you in anyway, I apologize. It was never intended.”
“Upset me. What gives you that impression?” I inquired, turning over the page and signing my name. My eyes were on my work as he spoke.
“You seem to be going out of your way to ignore what we did yesterday. I‘d like to know where I stand.”
“Tseng, you stand on the other side of that desk. That is as close to me as I’d like you to be. We previously came to the agreement that it wouldn’t be mentioned again. I’d like to stick to that. Which brings me nicely to something I’ve wanted to discuss with you… your attitude.”
Tseng blinked slowly “Pardon me, sir?”
“Your attitude towards me, I don’t like it. I don’t like this informal approach you seem to have acquired when addressing me. I am your boss and you are my employee. That is how it shall remain. Do we understand each other?”
He leaned back in the chair, surveying me smugly. “I think so.”
“Good, now is there anything else I can help you with?”
“There was something else, involving last night proceedings.” He waited for me to raise my head before he continued. I glared and met his eyes.
“Excuse me?”
“Rufus, I appreciate your misgivings. The whole situation does put us in a difficult position. But still, there’s no need to pretend like it didn’t happen. It seems a shame for our working rapport to become hostile over the circumstances.”
I frowned, “I’m not pretending. To me, it never did happen… and never will again. It was just a mere moment of indulgence to take the boredom away. Now, is that everything? As you can see, I’m very busy.” I took pleasure in his persistence, the fact that he wouldn’t forget and let it drop. It was now my turn to taunt him and I intended to milk the situation for all it was worth. I knew how much he enjoyed himself last night.
He nodded and rose to his feet. Heading towards the door, he paused. “Oh, and before I forget, I found this in my bed this morning. I thought I’d best return it.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a familiar leather watch strap. Turning back to face me, he walked back up to my desk and placed it down before me. I stared at it, my eyes curiously widened. How the hell did he get hold of that? I looked up to him, the smile was obvious on his face, he was delighting in every minute of this.
I picked up the watch, securing it to my wrist. “Anything else, Tseng?”
He shook his head and smiled. “No, sir.”
