In the face of something stronger and more dangerous than himself, Vincent stayed to fight for all he was worth. Even if he died, he at least died knowing he’d made a stand. He’d never run away from a fight in his life, no matter how hopeless it seemed. He never ran from a fight, at least not until tonight. He knew it was a mistake when he felt the painfully obvious flinching of the man beneath him, and when Cid looked at him, his normally sure face full of confusion, his eyes full of some unknown fear just from Vincent’s touch. He knew he’d made the worst mistake of his life. So Vincent, the strong albeit insecure man that he was, did the only thing he could do- he fled. He got up and left as fast as he could without running. He could feel the grass under his feet slowing him down, causing him to take longer strides to get anywhere. The cold night wind stung his eyes, and his hair was full of more knots by now he was sure, but he didn’t care. Anything, anything , was better than seeing that unknown fear in the blue eyes he loved so much. He wasn’t sure if Cid was following or not...he was afraid to look back.
DAMN, this guy was a fast walker, must be the long as legs, but he wasn’t exactly on his own home turf, was he? Cid just grinned as he ran through the tall grass, easily maneuvering through it as he made his way closer and closer to Vincent. The gunman’s long black hair was blowing the wind like a flag, his magnificently lithe body moving like some kind of exotic animal. Cid could still feel that kiss on his lips and the chase just made him even more excited about what he was going to do when he caught that man and had him back in his arms. He wasn’t even a foot away when he jumped, grabbing Vincent around the waist as the two men fell to the ground, tumbling over in a head first roll into the ground, Cid’s much heavier body landed on top of the smaller man, all of Vincent’s breath forced out of him as his body hit the ground. Cid landed on top of him in the most awkward position imaginable at the time- right between his legs. Cid pulled himself up onto his hands with a groan, some bone popping in his shoulder as he shook his head, his clothes all a tangle in around his body. He didn’t even notice the way his body pushed into Vincent’s as he popped his neck, rubbing he back of it. “DAMN, Vincent. I knew you had an insecurity complex but...” He didn’t finish his sentence as he took his first look at the man underneath him. His eyes were squeezed tightly closed, his body so rigid Cid was amazed he could still breathe. It wasn’t his flushed face that made Cid stop breathing, but how scared he looked. Cid sighed, leaning his head down to rest his forehead on Vincent’s as he took the frightened man in his arms, pulling him up so Vincent sat in his lap, legs on either side of him. “Ah, VINCENT...” The pilot shook his head, tightening his grip around the thinner man in his arms. He could feel Vincent trembling in his grip as the gunman lay his face in the crook of Cid’s neck. "I'm sorry Cid. I shouldn’t have...I shouldn’t have...” “And what would have happened if you didn’t, Vince?” Cid just smiled with a sigh. “You’d have just stayed in that shell of yours and never said a word to me, then I would have never been able to do this, and see you like this...” "You’re not mad Highwind...not disgusted, or-?” Vincent’s voice was muffled against Cid’s neck as he opened his eyes; the barest traces of the pilot’s blonde hair was being pulled in the soft wind. “Well, I AM kinda pissed off you made me run after you like a Chocobo in last place...but at you?...Nah. That’d be like being mad at the sun for being bright. That’s just how you are, though...” he pulled Vincent away from him, looking up at the flushed face that kept its eyes adverted. “I’d like it a lot more of you looked at me.” He waited until the half lowered, slowly glowing red eyes looked at him, flitting around his face until they settled on Cid’s collar bone. “NO...” Cid gently pushed his chin up with a finger, brushing it softly against the completely hairless face. “In my eyes.” Vincent lifted them slowly, letting his vision set on different parts of the pilot’s face. He started at his neck, which was actually quite long for a man, the stubbled, whiskered chin and the soft pink lips curled up into a smile. They were set below a slightly roman nose that dimpled slightly at the end, and then to the sky blue eyes that looked at him. They were clear and sharp, and they looked at him wordlessly. Vincent was about to say something before he was interrupted by a soft kiss, the stubble on Cid’s face scratching his chin slightly before the blonde man pulled away. "Highwind, wha-?” “You never let me finish what I wanted to say Vince...thought that’d be the best way to shut you up til I do.” Cid trailed his hands off of the slender body, leaning back on them as he looked up at the man sitting in his lap. “You gonna run away again?” Vincent shook his head and Cid just smiled. “Alright then...glad you told me what you did, but I kind of figured that was the case. I’m not as stupid as you think I am half the time, Vincent. Everything you did SCREAMED it, though I should have started listenin' sooner, I suppose. Now that I know how YOU feel, I guess it gives me time to sort out what I’m feeling too.” He caught Vincent’s surprised look and he shook his head, sighing. “It ain’t love, I can’t call it that...but it’s something...and I know I shouldn’t," his eyes flicked to the Highwind house and nack, "but I’m willin’ to see where it goes.” "Highwind, what about Shera? You’re married, afterall.” Vincent narrowed his eyes in confusion. He was sure the pilot hadn’t forgotten that little detail, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t still curious about the loophole he was going to have to make. "Well, technically, it isn’t adultery, you’re a guy. I'm not ‘cheating’ on her with another woman cause...you’re a guy and I think in law terms that really only applies to women, and unless Shera has this guy with guy fetish she hasn’t told me about, I don’t know.” Cid sighed, raising a hand to idly run through his hair. "Highwind?” “Yeah?” The pilot lay back on the grass, his hands laying across his chest as he stared up at Vincent. In the setting sun, he was in shadow, only those red eyes glowing faintly in the oncoming dark. "Can I tell you something?” "It's gonna have to wait til tomorrow.” Vincent’s face fell slightly as he titled his head to the side, confused. “Why?” “Cause it’s almost ten o’clock, I’m covered in dirt, Shera’s gonna wonder where we are and most importantly I think there’s a stick in my back.” Cid shrugged. “Ya know, little things. Not that I mind the fact you’re sitting in my lap, you can stay as long as you stop squirming so much.” He held in a chuckle as Vincent promptly jumped up onto his feet, the deep blush spreading onto his face evident even in the low light of the evening. Vincent watched as Cid stood up, dusting himself off. The moon had fully risen in the sky, and it cast a glow onto the earth, mingling with the rest of the sunrise. Cid glanced up at Vincent, smiling. The pale skin of the gunman practically glowed in the night, his red, mako enhanced eyes lit up a pale red in the dark. “I suppose so,” Vincent muttered. The walk back to the house took far less time that Vincent would have liked, and once inside of the house the two men stood there, close to each other trying to find something to say. “We’re still friends, right Vince?” Cid’s voice came out as a whisper as he glanced towards his closed front , then back at the taller man. “Even if nothing works out this way, we’re still gonna be friends, right?” Cid's face was set in a serious expression Vincent hadn't seen before, one that almost held a trace of concern. Vincent nodded his head. “Of course. You have my word." Cid smiled slightly, content for the time being with the promise. "Comon Vince, we should both go to bed.” He turned to walk into the house before he was stopped by a gentle hand on his shoulder, turning him back around to look half a breath away from Vincent’s calm face. “Vince?” The gunner leaned down to gently kiss Cid on his lips, then again on his forehead. The touch, as simple as it was, sent tingles through him as he slid his hand off of the broad man’s shoulder. “Good night, Cid.” A faint smile was all he gave the pilot before he turned, silently slinking into the house, up the stairs to his room. As he shut the door, he walked over to his bed, sinking down into it. He ghosted a finger over his lips as he rolled to his side, hands face resting against the cool sheets below him. The tight knot that was in his stomach all day was everything but gone, and he felt lighter then than he had in years. As he shut his eyes, sleep came to him easier than ever, and he fell asleep just like that; a ghost of a smile on his face and Cid on his mind. For the first time in over thirty years, he was actually looking forward to what the next day might bring him. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
