Years had passed since Snow returned to Academia. Most of the city was a well trained machine when it came to fighting the beasts that would appear from the random clouds of Chaos that would appear.
With the passing years, Hope noticed that people stopped aging. He tried to keep this discovery to
himself but it wasn’t long before the others noticed the same.
Some thought of it as a blessing. Others…a curse. Noel was conflicted and it soon became obvious to Snow. He wasn’t the same kid he met so many years ago. To be honest, everyone had changed but…Noel was becoming a recluse. He was constantly going off on his own to slay monsters. Snow didn’t like it. He recognized the behavior as something he once did. Long ago. He did the same thing after ‘The Fall’. He would avoid his more painful thoughts by making anything that was supposed to be in his new home bleed.
Noel was hurting. Snow gave him his distance at first but, when his careless behavior almost cost Gadot his life during one of their patrols, he had enough.
“WHAT is your problem, Noel? HUH?” Snow yelled as he threw the much smaller man against the wall of their apartment building. “YOU ALMOST GOT MY BEST FRIEND KILLED!” Pure rage filled his eyes.
“He’s FINE.” Noel yelled as he pushed Snow off of him. “Relax.” He fixed his shirt and stared at Snow.
“Fine?! He’s in the hospital with broken ribs and a massive gash on his back. The beasts claws JUST missed his damn spine and you say he’s FINE?!” Snow lunged at him, punching him across the jaw. Noel fell to the ground.
Silence. That’s all there was. Silence.
Snow slid down the brick wall and buried his face in his hands. Noel didn’t move. He just sat in shame. He realized what had happened and soon felt horrible.
“I’m sorry. I got…reckless. It won’t happen again.” His voice was almost a whisper.
“You’re right. It won’t. You’re not going out again until you deal with whatever it is you’re trying to
ignore.” Snow said harshly. His voice was raspy and tired.
“You can’t ban me from fighting and you sure as hell can’t force me to talk.” Noel exclaimed as he stood and turned to walk away.
“You wanna bet?” Snow ran after him, laying him on the ground. His massive body nearly squashing the life out of Noel. “You can either talk to me and tell me what the fuck is going on in that thick head of yours, or you can talk to my fist. It’s your choice but I won’t let you put my friends...MY FAMILY….in any more danger!” He yelled as he slammed his fist into the concrete next to Noel’s head.
Noel had never seen this level of anger in Snow’s eyes before. He was definitely prepared to do damage to him and he knew it.
Snow got off of him, giving him one more chance to talk. His hands formed tight fists as he tried to calm himself.
“I…can’t explain it.” Noel finally spoke. “The darkness inside of me is growing. The guilt inside of me.” He confessed, turning away from Snow to hide his shame. “Yeul…Caius…Serah. They’re all gone. Because of me. Because I wasn’t strong enough to save them!” He slammed his fist against the wall.
“Noel…” Snow sighed as he approached his hurting friend. “It’s not your fault. It was…their destiny.” He couldn’t believe the words that came from his mouth. “What your feeling is the Chaos. You have to fight it and find your strength again. Find your new focus.”
“It IS my fault, Snow. If Caius hasn’t put a sword through his heart, the chaos would have never escaped. Serah would have never…died. In my arms.” His voice cracked with emotion.
Snow realized at that moment that they had never talked about that day. About what Noel and Serah went through. About any of it. He stood by his side in silence.
“Serah died in my arms, Snow. I felt the life leave her body. Mog’s light dimmed with hers. In her last moments, she smiled at me with her big beautiful eyes and tried to tell me it was okay. I could see it in her eyes. But…I couldn’t BRING HER BACK!” He screamed at the top of his lungs. Hearing the pain in his voice brought shivers to Snow. “I…failed her, Snow.”
He didn’t know what to say. Pain he thought was long gone had reappeared. He didn’t blame Noel, though. He didn’t blame anyone. He knew she wouldn’t have gone out without a fight. Light didn’t raise her to be anything but strong.
“Snow…” Noel said quietly as he turned to him, tears running down his face. “When we fought Caius in Valhalla…” He paused, searching for the right words. “Lightning…”
Hearing her name caused him to stand at alert. They had literally never spoken of her. Not really. “What about her?” He asked as he placed his hands on Noel’s shoulders.
“She…turned to crystal.” Noel finally admitted. “I don’t know how or why. I just know what Caius told us before…”His voice trailed.
“Crystal…?” He asked. His knees went weak and he felt the sudden rush of sadness fill his already empty heart.
“I-I’m sorry, Snow. I should have…” Noel hit the wall again, sliding down the brick and resting his against it. “I should have told you. I know you were close…”.
Snow shook his head in disbelief. “No. She can’t be…she...spoke to me. She…brought be back here.” He finally admitted to Noel. Pulling the multicolored crystal heart from his pants pocket. “She…sent me this.” He cried out.
“What? How?” Noel turned to face Snow. He was in shock. Everything Serah told him about becoming crystal suddenly made little sense.
“I know it was her. I could feel her with me. She’s not gone, Noel. She…can’t be.” Snow paced back and forth, trying to make sense of Noel’s finally revealed secret.
“Maybe…maybe it’s different for her. She was the Goddess of Etro after all. You should have seen her in Valhalla.” A smile formed on Noel’s face, his eyes filled with admiration recalling the battles he witnessed. “She was…”.
“A Goddess.” Snow said as he tightly gripped the crystal, holding it to his heart.
Noel nodded in silence. The darkness that had been eating alive at him for all those years was beginning to fade. Only slightly but enough to bring him back to reality. For him to realize the danger he put Gadot in earlier.
“Snow…” His voice became serious. “I…think it would be best for everyone if I take some time on my own. Figure out my next move. I don’t want to put anyone else in danger. I need…time.” Noel admitted. He searched Snow’s face for a clue as to what may come next but his expression was emotionless. Still holding the crystal close to his heart, he nodded at Noel in agreement.
“You’re right.” He admitted. “Where ever you decide to go,” He gently put his hand upon his shoulder and squeezed. “Don’t forget about your old friend, Snow, yeah?” He joked.
Thinking back to the day Serah first told him about her beloved Snow and the annoyance he once felt toward him made him laugh to himself.
Their relationship changed the day Serah died. The day Gadot called for his help. The day Hope sent him to New Bodhum. Everything changed the very moment he entered his bedroom to see the giant, once filled with life man he met in Sunleth Waterscape becoming a broken shell of a man.
Today, he stood before a man he some day wished to be make proud. Snow was his best friend. The closest thing he had ever had to a brother. He would take pride in that fact, no matter what came of him. Snow was a hero. A hero he some day hoped to become.
