Someone to Protect...
by Midori Bond
Chapter 13
Cloud knocked
on the door of room 313 and frowned. This was the room registered
under Carrie Shinra's name. As the door slowly opened, he looked into
bloodshot eyes. "Miss Shinra," he said pushing the door wider.
She frowned at
him. "What do you want?" she asked, allowing the door to
open, but not for him to enter.
"We need
to talk."
"No, we don't."
As the door
started to close again, he folded his arms. "What do Sophia Gast
and Peter Mathers want with Tifa Lockheart?" he asked. As he
expected, the woman froze.
Carrie looked
at her feet. "I didn't know you knew her," she said quietly.
Cloud kept his
eyes trained to her face. "She and I grew up together," he
said lowly.
Carrie opened
the door fully and stepped to the side. "Come in," she said
in a soft voice. "You might be the only person that can stop
them now."
"I don't
understand," Cloud said shaking his head. As he looked around
the room, he saw a number of files and printouts across the table and
floor. "Aren't they doing research for Shinra?"
"Yes, and
no," she said making her way over to the sofa. "I
authorized research on Materia and Summon Spirits. What I didn't
know, was there were two that were used in experiments years ago. A
pair called Chaos and Destruction."
Cloud's eyes
widened slightly. "Chaos?" he echoed.
"Yes. It
appears that Dr. Gast and Dr. Hojo both found ways to harness their
Spirits and inject them into humans. The two the carry them are
Sophia Gast, and...."
"Vincent Valentine."
She looked at
him. "You know him as well," she said with a nod. As she
turned back to her files, she sighed. "It really shouldn't surprise
me. I know you didn't defeat Sephiroth alone. And he was in Nibelhiem
for a period of time."
"Vincent
and I were friends."
"Were?"
Carrie questioned.
Cloud frowned
as he turned to look out of the window. "It's complicated,"
he told her. He saw the way her eyes rolled before focusing on
another file.
"It's
always complicated," she said darkly. As she found one of her
records on Peter, she sighed. "But then you grow up, and learn
to simplify."
"Like you
did?" he shot.
Carrie mused
as she looked at him. "I wasn't ready to love someone what was
head over heels for me, and I left him." She turned away from
the swordsman and thought of playful blue eyes and long crimson
colored hair. "So yeah, I learned to simplify."

Reno leaned
against the door frame of Yuffie's room and simply watched her. She
was wearing a simple tee shirt and sweat-pants, and looked unbelievably
hot. He smiled in appreciation as she started to brush out her hair.
"You mind if I camp in here?" Reno asked stepping into the room.
Yuffie felt
her face heat as she thought of what she and Tifa spoke about.
"Is this why you offered your room to Lucien?" she asked
playfully. When she turned to look at him, she saw the same serious
expression he had wore earlier. "What is it?"
He shook his
head and walked over to her. "I don't want to think about
it," he said lowly. As she stood to meet him, he wrapped her in
his arms. "I can't think about what those freaks were about to
do to Lucky."
She ran her
fingers through his hair and sighed. There was something wrong, and
she knew that he would refuse to talk about what was bothering him.
She gazed into his eyes for a moment before smiling. "You can
take the floor," she teased.
Reno smiled as
he released her. Without a word, he walked over to the bed and
stripped off the comforter. "Okay," he said taking the two
pillows as well. He chucked as Yuffie looked at him with stunned
eyes. "I was thinking that we'd be warmer if we shared the bed,
but this is cool too.... Ignore the pun."
Yuffie made a
strangled noise before walking over to where he was standing and
snatched her pillows back. "I hope you realize that I can take
you in a pillow fight too," she said with a frown.
He laughed
before grabbing the sides of her face and kissed her passionately.
"Probably," he whispered against her lips. As he kissed her
again, he pulled her down to the floor. "Stay down here with me."
She looked
into his eyes and caressed his face. She could only swallow as he
tilted his head to the side and kissed the inside of her hand. He was
looking at her as if she was the only woman on the planet, and it
made her heart melt. She pulled away from him, and took his hand into
her own. "Come to bed with me," she requested in turn.

Tifa stared
out of the window as the snow continued to fall. She would have to
lay down and rest soon, but she couldn't. She knew she wouldn't be
able to sleep when Lucien was fighting for his sanity. A soft arm
around her waist brought her attention to the present. Bloodshot eyes
looked up at Vincent as he stood next to her. "I don't know how
to help him," she confessed.
Vincent pulled
her close and held her. "We can figure something out in the
morning," he told her. As she started to shake her head, he
frowned. "Tifa, you need to rest."
"I
can't," she said moving away from him. When she was standing
next to the bed, she turned and looked at him. "Not knowing that
my son's in the next room doped up with Jenova Cells and whatever
else they gave him."
He lowered his
eyes to the floor as she picked up her brush and started to attack
her hair. He had known that calming her down wasn't going to be easy,
but she had to rest. Without a word, he walked over to where she was
standing, and took the brush from her hands. "Why didn't you
come back to me?" he asked softly.
Her eyes
closed as she leaned back against him. "I was scared," she
replied in the same tone. "I thought you didn't care about me,
remember?" She turned and looked up into his eyes. "I
didn't know how you would react to my being pregnant."
Vincent pulled
her tight against him. "Will you stay with me now?" he
asked in a whisper. As she nodded as his clawed hand tangled in her
hair. He leaned forward and kissed her tenderly. As her arms wrapped
around his neck, he picked her up and carried her to the bed. He
hated what he was about to do, knowing that Tifa would feel betrayed
come morning.
She held onto
him as he moved from kissing her lips to her neck. She heard
Vincent's deep voice murmur something against her skin. When she
turned to look at him, she felt the familiar sensation of a sleep
spell wash over her. "No," she moaned as she tried to fight
the man over her.
His eyes were
closed as she tried to push him away from her. "I'll look after
you and Lucien," he whispered into her hair. He stayed that way
as she soon fell into a forced slumber. She hated being put to sleep
and he knew it. He also knew that once she woke up, there would be
hell to pay. But for right now, he didn't care. He was going to take
care of the woman he loved, as well as his son.
* * * * *
Lucien woke up
in an unfamiliar and dark room. The only light around him was the
from the full moon shining in the window. He sat up slowly and saw
his cloak at the foot of his bed. The last thing he really remembered
was Tifa and Vincent sitting with him when that... thing... Jenova....
...Mother....
He grabbed at
his head, trying to will the pain away. She was not his mother. She
was the calamity. A plague on the planet. He wasn't going to join her
at her Reunion. He wasn't going to open a path to the Promised Land
either. He was going to be his own person. He was going to do what he wanted.
He only had to
figure out that was first.
Lucien
carefully climbed out of his bed and noticed the feathers his wings
were leaving behind. He sighed as he flexed his wings and more of his
feathers drifted to the floor. Now he was molting. It seemed fair. He
was supposed to be a demon after all. According to the books his
mother... Sophia, read to him, only Angels had feathered wings.
"And none
of their feathers were black," he whispered as he went over to
the window. When amethyst eyes looked out into the wilderness, he
spotted a slim figure walking towards the house. Without a thought,
he opened the window and flew out into the night.
He flew over
to the figure, and saw it to be a tall woman wrapped in a thick blue
coat. As he landed in front of her, he saw green eyes smile at him.
"Good evening Lucien," she said with a smile.
He frowned at
her. "You know who I am?" he asked folding his arms over
his chest. As she nodded, his frown deepened. "You aren't going
to say that you're my mother too, are you?"
Lucrecia took
in his guarded expression, and shook her head. "No. I'm not your
mother. But I was there when Tifa gave birth to you," she said
moving around him. "I'm Lucrecia."
Lucien's eyes
widened. "Sephiroth's mother," he whispered.
The smile she
wore faded as she looked at the teen. "Yes, I gave birth to him."
He backed away
from her. "Did you know what Sophia and Peter were going to do
to me?" he asked in a small voice.
She shook her
head. "No. But I was trying to protect you and your mother from them."
"Why?"
Lucrecia
looked at him for a long moment. He was too young and too confused to
simply leave alone. Her eyes met his, and she saw it then. A simple
flash that told her everything. "Because I didn't want what
happened to my son, to happen to anyone else's."
Lucien laughed
darkly as he continued to back away from her. "It's too late for
that," he said bitterly. He looked at her and started to growl.
"They want to turn me into him," he spat.
She didn't
flinch as he rounded on her. She never backed away from the demon in
Vincent, she would be damned if she would be afraid of Chaos now that
he was in a child. "You have to fight against the cells,"
she said softly.
He continued
to growl at her. "It's not just cells. They doped my up with
Mako and her remnants too." He ran his clawed fingers through
his hair and pulled on it to calm down. "They put pieces of that
crazy bitch inside of me. Now she's in my head, telling me to join
her at her Reunion."
As feathers
fell to the snow, Lucrecia stepped forward and gently took his hands
from his hair. "Listen to me Lucien," she started. When
indigo eyes looked at her, she touched his face. "I've fought my
own battles against Jenova. She's strong, but I know that you're
stronger than she is."
Tears filled
his eyes as he shook his head. "No, I'm not," he whispered.
"I'm just a baby."
"A baby
that's survived more than most adults," she said clearly.
"I've seen the experiments Shinra used to conduct. More often
than not, the subjects die within days. Your mother has come too far
to have you, to lose you now."
"I don't
know who my mother is," he whispered. "I don't know who I am."
Lucrecia
smiled and caressed his face. "You're Lucien Lockheart. A young
man that can do basically anything that he wants." She saw the
way his eyes started to warm, she nodded. "Embrace that, and
half of the battle against Jenova is won."
He looked at
the snow at his feet and frowned. "I never thought about what I
want. I just always did as I was told," he confessed.
"Then
it's about time you start," Lucrecia said with a smile. She
straightened and tilted his face towards hers. "Lucien,"
she started formally. "Would you like to come inside?" she offered.
Just as he
looked towards the house, the front door opened. Vincent's form
stepped out into the darkness and Lucien folded his arms over his
chest. "I think I want to stay out here for a little bit
longer," he told her quietly.
Lucrecia
nodded and stepped away from him. Before she finished her walk to the
cabin, she looked at the teen. "Tifa's a new mother," she
said gently. When he looked at her, she smiled. "Just like this
is new to you, and you don't know what to do. The same can be said
about her. Please, don't be too hard on her."
Lucien turned
his eyes to the snow again. "I'll try," he said lowly.
She turned and
walked towards Vincent. "I think you should talk to him,"
she said in a whisper.
Vincent shook
his head. "I don't know what to tell him." He looked at
Lucrecia. "I wouldn't know where to start."
"Neither
does he." She looked into his eyes. "You have to remember,
his life is being turned upside down and inside out. Don't think that
just because you're his father, you have to have all the answers.
It's alright if you don't."
Vincent sighed
as he stepped away from Lucrecia. "Tifa's under a Sleep spell,
but I don't know how long she'll stay that way."
Lucrecia
frowned. "She should be fine by now," the tall woman said confused.
"She
fought against Sophia and Lucien when I left you earlier. She had a
potion, but she's still pretty torn up." Vincent looked at
Lucien and saw that he was inspecting his wings. "I'll be in to
check on her later," he said before walking towards his son.
Lucien looked
at the moon. "Is this where we're supposed to bond?" he
asked sarcastically.
Vincent
frowned. "Do you want it to be?" he asked in turn.
Lucien stretched
his wings and sighed. "I don't know." He looked at Vincent.
"What do most fathers that shoot their sons do?"
"I don't
know." Vincent looked up at the moon as well. "I assume
that don't miss could be an acceptable answer."
Despite the
low and serious tone, Lucien laughed. When Vincent looked at him, he
shook his head. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked that,"
he said as his laughter died to chuckles. As Vincent continued to
stand silently, he calmed himself down. "But really. I am sorry.
I shouldn't be so angry with you. You thought I was going to hurt Mom."
The side of
Vincent's mouth tilted up. "You're calling her Mom now?" he
asked. "What happened to Tifa?"
Lucien
shrugged as he sat in the snow. "She's nice," he said
inspecting one of the feathers that had fallen from his wings.
"She's willing to step aside and let me figure out what I'm
going to do. Sophia, she just wanted to keep me. She said so. And
then when I found out what they were doing to me. I don't think a
real family would do that."
Vincent nodded
as he thought about his own childhood. He could remember his mother
doing everything in her power to keep him on the right path.
"You're right, they wouldn't." He walked over to a near
boulder and sat on it.
They both sat
quietly just looking at the moon. Lucien's gaze continued to go to
his feather, or his hair until a heavy sigh left him. His eyes turned
to Vincent and he frowned. "Do you know what's happening to me?"
"They
were either trying to bring out Chaos, or turn you into
Sephiroth," Vincent answered.
"They
were trying to do both," Lucien told him. His eyes turned to
look at his father again, and his frown deepened. "I think
Sophia was trying to create a mirror image of you."
Vincent nodded
as he turned to face Lucien. "I saw the potential for that,"
he said with a nod.
Lucien brought
his knees up to his chest and circled his arms around them.
"Don't take this the wrong way, but I don't want to look like you."
Again, Vincent
felt a smile come to his face. He remembered that as a teen, he
didn't want to look like his father either. "That's fine,"
he said easily. "You can ask Yuffie or Lucrecia to cut your hair
in the morning."
Lucien nodded
and looked up to the sky again. "I think I'll do that," he
said in a whisper. His eyes closed tightly as a sharp pain erupted
behind his eyes. In him mind, he could hear the same whispers from
his dream of Jenova. The same calling to join her. To become one with her.
Vincent
frowned as he went to Lucien's side. He saw the way Lucien was about
to start clawing at his own ears and grabbed both of his hands.
"Lucien," he said sharply. He felt his heart break as vivid
blue eyes glared at him. "Lucien, you have to fight her."
He shook the boy, hoping that he would be able to save his sanity,
and being thankful that Tifa wasn't a witness to this.
The blue
slowly faded from Lucien's eyes, returning them to purple. He sagged
against Vincent, too weak to stay upright on his own. "I still
hear her," he said lowly. "She wants me to go to her."
"We won't
let you," Vincent said moving to help Lucien stand. "We've
all fought Jenova before, and we won. We can do so again."
Lucien
straightened and slowly pulled away from Vincent. "Can you
promise me something?" he asked. When Vincent looked at him, he
held up one of his fallen feathers. "I'm no idiot. And I know
that my chances of surviving this is slim."
Vincent
frowned and shook his head. "Don't talk like this."
"If I
die, I want you to have another baby with Mom." Lucien inhaled
sharply as the voices rose again. He pressed the heel of his hand
against his eyes and waited until they settled. "She went
through a lot to have me. If anything happens to me, you have to have
another baby with her so she won't be too upset."
A slow smile
spread across Vincent's face as he guided Lucien to the house.
"You really are Tifa's son," he said lowly. When violet
eyes looked at him, he continued. "You're looking past your own
fears, and trying to make sure that everyone else around you will be alright."
"She does
that?" Lucien asked. When Vincent nodded, he stepped onto the
porch. "I didn't think anyone was so devoted."
"She's
loyal to a fault," he replied grimly. Vincent followed Lucien to
the stairs. "Maybe if you stay around long enough, you'll be
able to see it for yourself."
Lucien looked
into Vincent's eyes for a long moment before nodding. "I'll do
my best."
