Nanaki had woken when Tifa started shifting around in her sleep. He decided she was alert enough to hear things on her own and silently went back to the room she had placed him in. He hopped up on the bed and let himself fall into a true sleep. Everything was under Tifa’s control now. If she truly needed help she would call to him and he would wake for anything above average sounds.
He hadn’t even been asleep two hours before he was awoken. His ears perked and a low growl rumbled from inside his throat. He was about to jump off the bed and search for Tifa when the sound that had awakened him came again. His body relaxed as he heard the sounds of Tifa heaving in the bathroom. She was sick again. Nothing life threatening. He closed his eyes and drifted back to sleep. He needed a few more hours so he could be at his best. Surely that wasn’t to much to ask. As he finally started drifting back to sleep, he caught the faint scent of Vincent approaching.
Vincent crept around to the front of the building while resituating the back pack slung over his shoulder. The thing was so uncomfortable he had no idea how Tifa was even able to carry it. He had known she would need some clothes so last night he had packed her a small over night bag. He set the bag silently on the front door step before slinking off unnoticed. He knew Tifa’s morning ritual was to open the doors and air the place out while she cleaned the tables. She would find the backpack soon enough.
He didn’t bother trying to give Nanaki any information. He had found a lead in all his sniffing around last night and he wanted to investigate it to know whether or not to send Nanaki and Tifa that way. He didn’t need to send them off chasing a goose.
While researching he had found out that a local woman had accused Charles of raping her but before she could testify, she disappeared. Nothing could be found to link her disappearance back to the man named Charles. The phone number belonged to a Michael Thomas. He had tracked down an address and was going to see about that as well. But after work. Right now he had an English class to teach.
____________ Hour Later ____________
Tifa opened the front door of the bar, pulling up short at the sight of her back pack on the front step. Her heart broke as she considered this Vincent’s way of saying good bye. She wouldn’t be surprised if in the next few days, a truck with the rest of her belongings showed up.
She forced herself not to cry and went back to busying herself with the bars needs. Once the bars needs were accomplished she would wake Nanaki and they would start their search for Charles. She had to find him to protect those she cared about most.
While she was cleaning the last of the tables, she felt her stomach do that little flop again. She groaned inwardly before taking off at a full run towards the bathroom. Nanaki sat at the bottom of the stairs watching Tifa run to the bathroom. He sniffed the air again and chuckled. The sound came out more as playful growl but it was an amused sound all the same.
Tifa ran into the first stall and emptied the contents of her stomach, three eggs and a piece of toast. When she was finally done heaving, she sat back on the floor, leaning against the stall wall beside her before opening her eyes. On the floor, just to the left of the toilet was a tampon wrapper that had not made into the trash bin. Tifa stared at the wrapper as she started doing the math in her head. Two weeks before she and Vincent had gotten together, she had gotten off her period. It was going on four weeks since she had started dating Vincent.
“Four and two make six.” She said aloud in revelation.
She put her right hand to her mouth as her left hand moved instantly to her stomach. Tired all the time. Sick. The milk had tasted fine to Vincent. The sudden cravings for nothing but eggs. The wild and irrational mood swings.
“Oh no.”
She couldn’t be. She hadn’t even told her best friend, Cloud, about her and Vincent. And breaking it too him by having Vincent’s baby was not the way to do it.
“No. I am just late. It happens a lot.”
She looked down as she realized her hand was idly stroking her stomach. The edges of a bruise could be seen from the small area of skin showing between the waist band of her shorts and the bottom of her shirt. She laughed to herself for over reacting.
If she had been pregnant, the fight from last night would have caused her a miscarriage. She had been hit pretty hard and with that weapon Michael had used on her… She shook her head. She wasn’t pregnant. Not after all that and more than likely not anytime before that.
And empty feeling settled over Tifa as she came to the realization she wasn’t pregnant. Now wasn’t the time but later. After this whole mess was over with and she convinced Vincent the two of them were meant to be together. Then they’d talk about a family.
She stood and walked to the sink, washing her face with the cool water before looking up into the mirror at her reflection. Something wasn’t right. There was no other excuse for her sickness. Food poisoning would have been done left her system. No other excuse for her to be tired all the time. And though some women claimed of serious mood swings while on their period, she had never had those issues before.
She made her mind up to run to the store and get a pregnancy test before the bar opened. Better to know for sure than keep that nagging voice in the back of her head. She quickly finished cleaning herself up before returning back to the main room of the bar. The back pack was sitting on the bar where she had left it. Nanaki was standing near the front door, looking out the window.
“Sleep well, Nanaki?”
“Yes. Thank you, Tifa.” He turned his attention back to her. “We really should start looking into where Charles is.”
“Yeah. Okay. But I need to make a quick trip to the store. I have to keep the bar open or we won’t have much of an income.”
“I will go with you.”
Tifa stopped cleaning the table and looked at him. “No.” She said quickly.
Nanaki tilted his head, looking at her in an eerily questioning way. It was eerie because she could actually read the look he gave her and he wasn’t even human.
“I mean…” She raked her mind for the proper way to say this. “I need to get stuff for the bar and…” She couldn’t tell him that she needed a pregnancy test.
“Human females all believe their feminine issues are secretive.” He didn’t ask a question. He stated it. And compared to his species, that was true. Every male in at least a four mile radius could tell when a female was in heat. Humans were not as obvious about it.
Tifa nodded and turned away from Nanaki before he could see her blush a deep shade of red. Wasn’t like she wanted to share this with everyone. She really didn’t want him thinking she was on her monthly but that was better than admitting she wanted a pregnancy test.
“I will stay outside while you get what you need, but I am coming with you incase they try to corner you again.” Nanaki’s voice was final as he spoke. No room for argument.
Tifa could not argue his logic and reluctantly agreed. At least with him outside, she had some semblance of privacy as she did this.
Nanaki had assisted with the routine cleaning and had proved to be very helpful. In a matter of thirty minutes, they had everything done and were now walking to the store. Their walk had been in silence with the occasional small talk. They were almost to the store and Tifa found herself walking faster. Even though her heart was sinking with each step.
It wasn’t that she was really worried about being pregnant. If she was then she knew she would love and care for this child, with or with out Vincent. But she knew that this was one of the worse times to have a child. Not really. She could have gotten pregnant while they were hunting Sephiroth.
Tifa walked through the doors and looked over her shoulder just in time to see Nanaki sit a few feet from the door. He was doing as planned. Giving her the distance to get what she needed. She made quick work of getting the things for the bar. Sure. Nice list of things for a bar: Trash bags, toilet paper, dish soap, pregnancy test, floor wax, window cleaner. Yes, all normal things needed for a bar to run properly.
She saved the pregnancy test for last, not in any hurry to get the item. Now that she was walking down the aisle that housed the item, she was nervous and slightly embarrassed. Isn’t this what females had female friends for? Send them into the store to get the embarrassing items. That’s it. She could tell the owner she had a friend who had gotten herself in a bind. And to help cover up her story, she could buy some tampons. She would need them soon anyways once this test came out negative.
Not so embarrassed anymore, she grabbed the test and threw in her shopping cart before grabbing her usual brand of tampons and tossing them in as well. With her cover story in place she pasted on a fake smile and walked to the front of the store. She could see Nanaki sitting a few feet away from the door.
“Hi Ms. Lockheart.” The store owner, Jason, greeted her with a wide smile. “Haven’t seen you in quiet a while.”
“Hi Jason, and yeah, went and stayed with a friend for a while.” She motioned to the pregnancy test. “Having a rough time.”
“I understand. My wife was a little shocked her first time. Hope your friend is alright.”
He rang the items up and multiplied the total by two. As always. Tifa smiled as she reached into her pocket and pulled out the gil needed. She laid the gil on the table and started grabbing her bags.
“Keep the change, Jason.” She said over her shoulder while walking towards the door.
“Thanks Ms. Lockheart.” He called to her. “Be safe and I hope to see you around more often.”
Tifa nodded and walked out the door. Nanaki gently took one of the bags into his mouth. Tifa made sure to keep a hold on the one that contained her personal items. She wasn’t about to let anyone see what was contained in them.
Nanaki took the bag and followed Tifa back to the bar. Him carrying a bag served a dual purpose. He wouldn’t be able to speak and she wouldn’t be able to see his smile. He couldn’t help but smile after over hearing her lie to the store owner and he was pretty sure he knew what she had bought from the store that she didn’t want him to know about.
They made their way back to the bar; Tifa was lost in thought and kept shifting the bags around nervously. She wasn’t really worried about the test. She was almost sure the result would be negative. What made her nervous was the fact she was slightly disappointed that the test would come back negative. She had bought the box that had two test inside it just so she could take two to make sure.
When they got to the bar, Tifa opened the door and rushed through putting the stuff away. She then pulled a bar stool up to the sink and grabbed a glass before hopping up and making herself comfortable.
She turned the tap on and left it running as she downed the first glass of water. After emptying the glass and refilling it did she finally cut the tap off. She drank the water slower while watching the clock behind her.
__________ Hour Later ___________
Nanaki sat came back down stairs with a head set in his mouth. He looked at Tifa, sitting on a bar stool beside the sink with a glass of water in her hand, before walking around the bar to sit in front of her.
“The number you gave me made several calls to a Charles Bradston, I’m assuming this is the man the others seek, and there is an extensive record for him until about four years ago when he was reportedly picked up by Shinra. Nothing after that, that I could find, but I got people working on getting more for me.”
“Thank you Nanaki.”
“We got tonight and tomorrow to figure this out or they’re coming here to give us more motive.”
“Me. They told me not to tell anyone.”
“They have to know you told someone at least something or else you wouldn’t have been able to hide the kids.”
“They’ll be pissed that I told someone.”
“They won’t know I am here.” The beast countered.
“That’s it.”
“What?”
“They won’t know you’re here.” Tifa hopped off the bar stool, finished her glass of water, refilled it, and took another swallow before explaining herself more. “They’ll come here, they’ll ask about the kids and Cloud, I’ll tell them I couldn’t find anything and I need more time so I sent the three of them on vacation so they wouldn’t get mixed in with this.”
“You left out the part where they will attack you again and probably will not believe you when you tell them that.”
“But you’ll be here and they won’t know it. The only thing they’ll see on any scan is an animal. So they’ll think I am alone.”
“Giving us the element of surprise should they try attacking.”
“And that little weapon he has may not work on you because you are not human.”
“And it may not be adjusted for non human standards.”
“So either they give us more time or we take them down and make them leave us alone.” She said happily.
“Why don’t we just ambush them and get them to leave us alone?”
“Because now I am curious what happened to this man.”
“Curiosity killed the cat.” Nanakia told her.
“Good thing neither of us are cats then.”
Nanaki watched Tifa grab the last bag from their trip to the store off the bar and start walking up the stairs he had just descended with the glass of water still in her hand. A sound carried to his ears and he perked up quickly, walking to the door just as Tifa vanished at the top of the stairs.
He listened carefully as the bike drew closer. Cloud was coming. Tifa had said he wouldn’t be back for a couple of days. Apparently she was wrong and he was home early. This could hinder their newly formed plan. Severely hinder it. Nanaki continued to listen to Cloud’s approach while some of his attention was on Tifa, waiting for her reaction to Cloud arriving.
Tifa stood in the bathroom, looking at a watch she had brought in with her. The directions said to let stand for two minutes. It was almost two minutes but she wasn’t about to mess it up by tampering with it before those two minutes were up. She counted the seconds off in her head as she watched the second hand count down.
She was leaned against the bathroom sink with the pregnancy test sitting on the edge of the bath tub beside her and a little behind her. By the time she had made it to the top of the stairs, she had had to pee so bad she couldn’t make it to her room. So she had opted use the guest bathroom. Cloud used it more than anyone else and his scent filled the room. The smell was soothing but at the same time depressing. She missed Vincent.
Finally the watch reached two minutes and Tifa turned around, tossing the empty box into the trash can beside the sink while setting the other test and watch down on the sink counter. She took a deep breath and leaned over to retrieve the test. Two straight lines, not pregnant. On straight line and a plus mark, pregnant. She took another deep breath and looked down at the test.
