Not long after Noel departed from Academia, Snow followed. Academia was safe now. His family was safe. The truth was, it hurt for him to be surrounded by everyone he cared so deeply for. Knowing that Serah and Lightning weren’t there with him.
He said his goodbyes and left. He knew everyone was safe and, no matter what happened to him now, he was okay with that.
He had absolutely no idea how much time had passed since he left. He traveled from city to city trying to figure out what it was he was looking for.
He finally settled in a developing city called Yusnaan. He saw potential with this place. The people were friendly and, for the most part, could defend their home pretty well on their own.
He rented a room from a local hotel and searched for jobs. Before he knew it, the city was well built and buzzing with life. Fireworks every night, music playing on the streets, little shops serving delicious food open all day every day.
At first, it was the home he had always seen himself in. A larger than life city that never slept. Just like him.
Decades passed and the chaos grew stronger with every passing day. People celebrated him, calling him ‘The Patron of Yusnaan’. Which he didn’t mind at first. He loved the attention he got from everyone. Especially the ladies.
They would swoon when they saw him. He always laughed when he saw them blush when he would wink at them. He knew he could have literally any women he wanted in this town. The ones that lived there and the ones that simply visited. It was flattering but, when he returned to the palace he called home now, it wasn’t what he wanted.
He wanted Lightning. He never talked about her to anyone in his city. He honestly didn’t keep too many people that close. He couldn’t bring himself to do it. Not after the amount of loss he had to face in his long life. It was just easier to stay isolated from personal relationships but, by doing that, he could feel the darkness setting inside of him.
He didn’t even know when or how it happened but, as the chaos grew stronger in their ever so slowly dying world, he came L’Cie again. Which only made it more difficult for him to stay connected to the world before him. The world he swore to protect so long ago.
Maybe that’s why he became branded again. Maybe the thought of failing everyone created his new focus. He didn’t care. Not anymore. He just fought because that’s what heroes do, right? They never run away from a fight.
One day, as he laid in his king sized bed alone, staring at his beautifully tiled ceiling, he was met by the sudden feeling that he was not alone. He quickly grabbed his covers and pulled them over his nearly exposed lower half as he sat up and looked around. The flashes of fireworks lit up his room, to show a tall and slender figure standing next to his bed.
“F-Fang?” He asked as he squinted in her direction. He scrambled to turn the light on that rested on his side table. When his eyes finally adjusted, there she was. Standing before him. Looking the same way she did centuries ago.
“Hey, Hero. Fancy meeting you here.” She joked as she plopped on his bed at his feet.
“You…I haven’t heard from you ages.” His voice was deeper than she remembered. Darker.
“Well, I’ve been a little busy. Waking up in a dying world, and all.” She twirled her lance as she flashed him her infamously cocky grin.
“Wait…you’re…awake?! You’re not in my head this time?” Excitement filled his body as he jumped on her and gave her a hug she had never expected. “Wait…what about…” He pulled away and sat back, staring at her.
“Vanille? She’s fine. For now. She’s in Luxerion being a pawn for some religious extremists. Which…is why I’m here.” She admitted.
“Okay…I don’t know much about that department. I usually steer clear of fanatics.” He said as he ran his hand through his unkempt, golden hair.
“I’m looking for information about a clavis. I have reason to believe Vanille is in trouble. I just don’t
know where to look.” Desperation filled her voice. He knew that feeling all too well. The desire to save someone close to her heart.
“I…I haven’t heard anything about a clavis but, if I hear anything, I’ll let you know.” He said calmly as he placed his hand on her knee. “I’ll help in anyway I can.”
“So, you gonna tell me what’s going on here?” She looked around his darkened palace. Clearly noting the amount of chaos leaking through the walls.
“I’m handling it.” He admitted as he nervously adjusted himself on his bed.
“Are you, now? It doesn’t look like you are. The old Snow wouldn’t have allowed it to paint his walls with misery.” She sighed as she placed a hand on the seeping smoke.
“Fang…” He reached for his pants on the other side of his bed. “I’m doing what I can.” He said, clearly aggravated. “It’s controlled.” He stood up and pulled his black pants over his recently naked lower half. Hoping she didn’t notice.
“Is it, though?” She asked, turning to look at him as she quickly walked up to him. “I don’t think it is. It’s only a matter of time before this shit here consumes YOU.”
“Fang, a lot has changed since you left. I’ve been doing the best I can.” He quickly grew annoyed and she could sense the change in him.
“Nah, things haven’t changed that much. The problem is,” She jabbed her finger into his bare chest. “YOU have changed. You’re allowing this shit to rule over you. You think you’re doing the right thing by controlling it but you’re not. You’re a damn fool for thinking that you are. You’re avoiding the truth, Hero.”
“Maybe I am but for centuries I have been doing what I can. ALONE. You and Vanille were in crystal stasis. Sazh was busy being a father and now…now his son won’t wake up. Hope just disappeared. Noel is God knows where.” He walked over the the railing of his balcony and leaned over. Staring at the people dancing and laughing below. “Serah and Light are…” His chest and face turned red with anger.
“Yeah yeah. I get it. You were alone but the Snow I knew when I left would never give up. He would fight for his family. He would fight for his happiness.” She joined him on the balcony. Watching the last round of fireworks fill the sky.
“How can I be happy when the women I loved are dead?” He asked her quietly.
“Dead? You’re a damn fool if you think either of those women would give up that easily.” She smiled. “Besides, there’s already one broken guy pining over the loss of one of the Farron girls over in Luxerion. Talking crazy talk about an oracle drive showing him that he must defeat the ‘savior’ to save the girls his heart aches for.”
“W-Wait. What?” He quickly asked her, anticipation filled him as he waited for her to speak.
“Noel is in Luxerion. I don’t know much else. I only just returned, man.” She sighed, wishing she could give him more.
So many things rushed through his mind. Who is ‘the savior’? Why hadn’t Noel told him about any of this? How did he not hear of Fang and Vanille’s return?
“Maybe you’re right. Maybe all this chaos is getting to me. I…I should have known about…all of this. I should have been there when you woke up.” He sadly admitted.
“Aw, C’mon. Don’t beat yourself up, Snow. I didn’t exactly find you immediately.” She joked as she
bumped him with her shoulder. Trying to lighten the mood.
“I guess. Listen, I’ll let you know if I hear anything about the clavis. Keep me in the loop about this
savior. Deal?” He asked her.
“Only if you start dealing with the pain that’s dwelling inside of you, yeah?” She asked as she headed toward the doorway.
She left him standing there. Lost in his own mind. He hid it the best he could but the darkness was
definitely growing inside of him.
‘Just give me a sign…’ he pleaded quietly as he looked up at the clear sky above him. ‘Just one sign…’ He reached into his pants pocket and pulled out the crystal heart that he never let out of his sight. The only connection he had left with the woman he missed so much. Only this time, he noticed the heart was shinning slightly brighter than usual. The pink strands of color were more neon than usual. He thought his eyes were playing tricks on him, though. Lightning was gone. She was in a crystal stasis somewhere he would never be able to reach.
He sighed heavily and put it back into his pocket and decided to go for a walk. Go kill something. Fix something. Anything. He just couldn’t be there.
