Irvine was glad for many reasons to have a smile on his face, it helped avoid others knowing that it had a specific target at the other end. Not that he wasn't thrilled to see his other friends, he truly missed their multitude of personalities. But, he especially missed Squall. How lovers complained about long distance relationships made no sense, emotionally anyway, physically, he was going bananas, but there's more to liking Squall than touching all over him with his hands and other various things attached to his body.
But, he liked to miss the commander. He liked thinking about his 'isms'. The way he hid smiles. The way he chews. The sound of his voice. His expressions. And he could lose hours of subconscious just thinking about that little breath Squall expels before he spoke sometimes.
"Seifer!" Selphie's voice cut through his thoughts. Looking for her, he grinned when she prance towards him and Seifer, hands waving excitedly. "Hi, guys!"
Irvine broke into a sprint and scooped the ball of sunshine up, and dashed away with her, spinning her around and around, snickering while she laughed merrily. Returning to the group, he set her down.
"Hey! I've missed y'all." He said to the others, a little out of breath from the burst of physical exertion. There goes any gold medals, if he's having a 'slugging it' physique today.
"S'up!" greeted Zell. "It's been a while. Not long enough, for some people," His squint landed on Seifer.
"Aww, but I missed you most of all..." Retorts Seifer, a sincerity in his tone.
Surprised, Zell asked. "Really?"
"Of course... Chicken wuss."
Growling, Zell grit his teeth. "For the last time, that is not my name! Stop calling me that, or I'm gonna beg for you to be psych evaluated every month, because you've clearly been having memory problems."
"I'll just blame the G.F.s, Galbadia is trying to normalize their use."
Quistis heaved a sigh. To think, just the year before she was amongst the instructors awaiting the start of the games, having civilized conversational eavesdropping, not kid games of: So-and-so is picking on me again. Ugh.
"Instructor Trepe, nice to see you'll be competing." Seifer continued with berating of his comrades and childhood friends.
"Seifer, you know I'm not an instructor anymore."
"Who could demote such a skilled treasure?"
Quistis was about to say something snarky, but turned the other cheek. "It's always nice to see you won't change, Seifer." Well, maybe not too much of a full turn. Nothing stung Seifer's pride more than being referred to as "an underclassmen". He would never rise in the ranks. Never be counted. Just a cadet. Number 764590: Seifer Almasy.
"Uh huh. You know, Quistis, you no longer have instructor immunity by the end of this."
Quistis looked green, much to Seifer's delight.
At the end of the Garden games, to relieve stress, they have a food fight. The instructors are given a pass. Too volatile for student revenge. But, it fosters joy amongst the cadets.
"So, what's everyone been up to?" Asked Irvine.
"I've been doing a lot of reading," replied Selphie. "And a lot of thinking, too..." Suddenly shy, she kicked at the dirt with the tip of her high-top sneaker. "Irvine, maybe we can talk later?" The "please" in her eyes and tone could make the 'Hang In There, Baby' cat risk the fall to go help her.
"Sure, Sefy, no need to get so serious, though." He snickered, and gave her a palsy pat atop her head. He knows what it's about. May as well create the romantic distance now, before it's too late to dispel the awkwardness of the situation.
"Cadets, please line up with your Garden." Came Cid Kramer over the loudspeaker.
"Good luck, kids." Seifer walked away.
"Charming as ever." Commented Zell with a non-physical roll of his eyes. "I'm more pumped than ever to kick Galbadian ass, now! Woo!" He rushed away to line up.
"I wonder if I can re-enlist as an instructor, affective immediately?" Quistis shook her head, then walked after Zell's lead.
Even Squall snickered hearing Quistis express her displeasure for the games.
Selphie waved good-bye, then started away. Her nerves silenced her for the moment.
"Good luck." Irvine said to Squall in a low voice.
"You, too."
Grinning, Irvine turned away to join his group but bumped into a cadet flying his way. "-'xcuse me, pardner."
Ferris Sergeant hid his true response, and laughed. "No, excuse me." He saw Squall restore his gaze from narrow to neutral. "Hey, Squall, let's do doubles for the relay."
Squall didn't reply, he simply turned on his heels and started away.
"Wait for me!" Ferris rushed to the departing human lion.
"Weaseley little fella," adjusting his ponytail band, he stepped into line with the other cadets from Galbadia.
Headmaster Cid continued to speak as though he was the ambassador. Although, as founder, along with his wife, it would be the truth. "First I would like to express how good it is to have us all back in this type of situation."
The cadets and instructors applauded, in cheer for the spirit of getting along. Although, it came off more as a clap one would use when watching golf in person.
"And please give a big cheer that Trabia Garden, now up and running, can join us!"
Now the applause was sincere. The 'woops' and 'yeah!' aplenty. Selphie being among the loudest.
"Welcome, our new headmasters, headmistress of Galbadia Garden, Edea Kramer and headmaster of the newly open Trabia Garden, Marcely Kabisch."
There were mixed responses to the request of cheer. Balamb and Trabia haven't quite gotten over the fear and loathing as Galbadia has had time to. Edea Kramer, as a sorceress, tried to wipe them out of existence with missiles. Not an easy thing to forgive. Trabia was unlucky, a lot of cadets, instructors, and staff died that day. However, there were many cadets and instructors willing to forgive and forget, as they understand the complexities of the situation. Anyone could become a candidate for the power transfer of a dead sorceress. It was no one's fault.
"We're going to divide the games up to playing fields, three events at a time." Cid went on. "Ribbons will be won, and the overall Garden to have the most victories will be rewarded with a trophy. Passed down from generations."
All participants looked at the large piece of cheap metal, but it held a bit of awe. It's status of victory. It is a must-have item.
"Lunch will be in three hours. We've brought in catering from M&S." He waved down their exited murmurs. "And, as always you get a night pass into town. But, please behave as if the world is a home which you are a guest. Nothing but polite young men and women."
"Sir, yes, sir!" All cadets replied. They are too excited for a night's pass. Why screw it up?
"Wonderful! And, to add to the unification we're sleeping outdoors in a sort of camping style. Co-ed Garden, however, if we allow co-ed tent arrangements, we must be able to trust you." He teasee.
Cadets groaned in exhaustion of the man, others laughed and looked to their friends whom they know are dating, some blushed at the idea of finding someone to start a relationship with in such an intimate setting. Others just stood bored, ready to get on with it.
"And with that, let the games begin!"
Applauding, the cadets then began to disperse to find their event or stand by as spectators.
"Alright, long jump is first. That's me." Declared a very fired up Zell. He could feel his leg muscles flexing, ready for use.
"I'm headin' to the dart-o-war." Irvine commented. "Guess I'll have to miss ya,"
"It's ok. I have to miss yours. Good luck."
"You too."
He waved his hand. "Come on guys."
Squall looked torn, he wanted to quietly cheer on his friend, and show spirit for Balamb, of course. But, Irvine...
"Sorry, Zell. I'm gonna go watch Irvine." Selphie stated coolly.
"Suite yourself," replied the martial artist.
Irvine smirked at the bewildered look that flashed across Squall's face, that it could be that easy. He wasn't expecting Squall to watch, or be able to watch his every event. But, it was kinda cute how torn he was about it. Especially after having to be completely forgotten about by someone he's spent many days playing with, sitting quietly beside, or watching out for when they were children. Irvine's heart gave a loving thump as a sudden pain repair. He supposed it was easier for Selphie to do as she pleased emotionally, since she transferred from Trabia to Balamb. She has two loyalties of a past and current, and has decided just to cheer on a friend.
'If only that was the case; Selphie might be trying to stay close to me to ask me out.' He started towards the field, said childhood friend and former crush in tow. Seifer came along, as well.
Squall, after a sway of hesitation followed Zell and Quistis across to the other side of the field.
Dart-of-war was a game of strength and precision. Three singular people strapped together with an elastic cord, run from a center position towards a box of large darts in order to toss them at a large board for points. All safety measures in place, of course. Even if someone was stronger than the other two competitors, they still had to land a point from the tossing line - - which would not be easy with the others jostling your balance and aim as they continue to rush to their own goal. It was a blast to play and to watch.
Selphie laughed and clapped for her friend, her crush steadily blossoming for the friend-zoned sniper. "Woo! Go, Irvy! Go!" She giggled into her hand when he fell forward and was then dragged backwards a bit from the other players. "You've got this! Yay!" She jumped when Irvine found his footing and sprinted ahead to his box of darts.
His aim was perfect, the launch time delayed from a quick yank off balance, but he landed a ten pointer! Yes!
"The other's are gonna be so proud." Declared the Trabian, her phone has been recording the whole event. She hoped the others are doing the same with Zell and the long jump. He was representing all the shorties.
"Dig your feet in, Irvine!" Seifer shouted through cupped hands.
"I ain't exactly a heavy weight champ," Irvine grunted in response. Between the exertion and laughing, it was an exhausting event. But he managed taking the win, due to hitting the center of the dartboard every time. He can't wait for archery. Less painful on the torso.
"Thanks," he said to Selphie, who handed him a bottle of water.
"I was starting to worry you'd get severed in half." Seifer patted Irvine's shoulder.
"Me too." He drank another few gulps. "What're the next events?"
"Looks like.. oh, that's me! Come watch me base-bowl?" It was requested through question.
"Alright. I wanna see if the long jump is over for a sec,"
Selphie followed along. Seifer shook his head. Puppy-love. First Quistis with Squall, then Irvine with Selphie, now that the feeling is shared Irvine seems to have moved on. He hoped Selphie had a strong foundation, if his hunch is correct. Seifer departed for his event, which was getting flags around a rock climb wall for speed. Piece of cake with his long legs.
"How'd it go?" Irvine asked the competitor.
"Swept the competition... until Fifi came along and went all Last-of-the-Amazons on it." He held up his yellow ribbon. "I placed second."
"I won my event." Irvine bragged without bragging.
"And I've got it all on camera." Selphie held up her phone.
"Of how he wrestled the real winner for the ribbon?" Teased Zell.
Irvine laughed. "It was a struggle, he had a vicious grip."
"Guys, come watch me play ball." Selphie was a blur after that, as she sped over to the event area. She didn't even realize that Squall was still in possession of her phone, which he'd casually reached for and was given before Zell could swipe it.
"She didn't even wait to walk with us," Zell commented. "I'm gonna go watch Seifer."
If this was television, the sound of a record scratching would have been heard as the martial artist's friends whipped their heads to look at him in surprise.
Zell shrugged his hand out. "I missed him, he's still one of us... Even if he's a jerk." Seeing that they are still a bit stunned, he wagged his head then confessed. "And I might throw a couple pebbles at him."
Now that made sense. They dispersed from each other to watch one another. They day was like that for hours, then finally lunch rolled around.
The buffet tables were packed with delicious foods. From fried chicken to fresh salads, slices of ham, pitchers of lemonade and iced tea. The vegetarians had a feast of selections just as much as the carnivores. And the tables filled up with Garden life all mixed and mingled, chatting, and flexing their Garden pride in a friendly manner.
'Finally, get to spend some time with Squall.' Irvine sat down beside his boyfriend, his senses enjoying the private intimacy of his knee lightly touching Squall's. While above at viewing level, he was cool and collected. Nothing out of the ordinary.
"So, wow! You guys are sitting here? Can I join you?"
"No."
"Seifer..." Quistis warned him about being rude.
"We don't know this spastic side-kick. Why endure his company?"
Irvine didn't know whether to feel uncomfortable with how rude Seifer could be, or buy the guy a car for it, because that "spastic side-kick" currently has a foot poised to part him and Squall so that he could sit down.
"We're friends, well, becoming friends. Right, Squall?"
If the sound of a scratching record was a person given royalties, it would get a cramp from signing checks today, because life was on a roll with use of it. Squall Making friends casually? He's presumed barely friends with his actual friends, so where does this oddity fit in?
'What is up with this guy? Does he have a crush on Squall or something?' Irvine could not have that. And with a glance, encouraged Seifer's brushing aside the newcomer.
"We're not friends. You asked me to train with you, one time. I did. It's gonna be left at that." Squall said so plain-faced it stung more than an insult.
Ferris looked annoyed, then embarrassed, then laughed it off. "My bad, dude, I understand. It's all good. Enjoy your lunch." He walked away finding another, nearby, table to occupy.
They resumed their meal through catching up, patches of feasting quiet, and gentle ribbing. It was a great day that finished with a fun night out in town. A lot of cadets stayed on the field site to camp, with little fires built to make s'mores and enjoy the night sky, while the more lively crowd went into Deling to a club called Underaged. It sounds dirtier than it is, because the name is the meaning. All clubs are 21 and older, this club is for minors. No alcohol, no smoking. Just flashing lights, bopping music, and a well supervized good time. It was the only way the place could exist. The concept could easily get away from the point of a place purely fun due to improper monitoring.
It was a bit of a struggle, but Irvine convinced Squall to come into town with him and the others. The introvert Lion of Balamb stayed to himself at a table, with a glass of root beer and simply enjoying his friends' enjoyment to keep him company. Irvine was in his element on the dance floor, he loved a good beat. And he danced with Selphie, Zell, and a little with Seifer. Quistis didn't come. She was exhausted from the day, and retired to bed in her tent out on The Great Plains of Galbadia with the remaining.
Irvine finally left the dance floor, joining Squall at his planted area. "You wanna get out of here?"
"Yesterday."
Irvine gestured a "let's go" by a nod of his head towards the exit. They made for the door after telling the others they were leaving for the campsite. It was supposed to be the truth, but turned out to be a pre-truth, because they actually wandered into the shopping district to the Deling Hotel. It was a room for two, with double beds. And the day continued it's pleasantries as they showed each other how much they were missed.
Irvine would have never thought that he'd see another moment of nudity with Squall. The commander seemed a bit like the type to give it a shot, and once it was out of his system he was good. But, there they were, laid atop each other like MMA fighters locked in a fierce hold, one trying to dominate the other. And in a small way, Irvine was trying to dominate Squall because he wanted him to come close inside of him again. But, it was a little awkward to ask because nude as they were, this could just be a session of heavy... very heady, heavy petting.
Irvine arched his back, so mad from desire he wanted Squall's sensual little tugs to just yank the thing free from him! He's that keyed-up from the passion!
Through a pant, he whispered "Drive me" then moaned loadly as Squall seemed to magically double in weight to grind into him so thoroughly his cock was at risk of being erased from his body. Perfect. "More." He pleaded, his thighs tightened against his boyfriend's sides.
"We can't." Squall whispered into Irvine's kiss.
"Why?" He whispered back through the small window left for a breath.
"No protection."
Irvine nodded. "In my pocket. The bathroom in the lobby had a dispenser." He sat up on a lean with support from his elbows and forearms. "Don't know how recent they are..."
Squall returned to the bed, condom in hand and torn open. "You should do it... You brought it."
"I don't have to. You sure?"
Squall looked hesitant. "Are you ok with it?"
Irvine nodded. "Perfectly."
"...You're gonna have to give me some lube." He lowered himself to Irvine's lap, and dipped his face a bit lower than that to lap his tongue around the sniper's balls.
It was the most hair raising thing Irvine had ever seen, mostly because of what Squall had said. "Give me some lube". His man could sure talk dirty without meaning to. And judging by the speed of his own panting breaths, and the tightening of his loins, he was ready to comply with the request. He spilled against the cupped hand Squall placed around his member's head.
Helping out his lion, he slid the condom over the source of newly understood joy, then watched the intoxicating sight of Squall stroking himself to coat the area. That was all he could stand, and the hunting wolf pounced! Squall fell onto his back, climbed upon by Irvine who carefully held the slick rod to position it to his entrance then he dropped his weight upon breach. His own limb restoring to an awakened position with each inch he went down. Time to play...
Ferris, who stood outside of the rented room after following the pair from the club, listened in with angered tears. He's investigated the situation enough, and now the proof has revealed itself with every moan, slap of skin, whisper of name, and false complaint of the furniture under the assault. He hates them. He reviled them! How could he have been so blind as to nearly worship that... fucking phony! Queer! Insignificant... He probably just got lucky in the war and helped Garden. And there was no way that Irvine could have been the deciding factor of the end of Ultimacia. There was a fluke if ever had been one.
'They are gonna be sorry.'
...
"Gimme your hand?"
Squall, though confused, took Irvine's hand. He watched in muted curiosity as it was raised up a bit. Irvine took his phone from the dresser and snapped a picture.
"Is this some weird fetish of yours that I have to get used to?" Asked the recuperating commander. His hips are finally convincing him that he won't be walking funny when he leaves, the pretty part-time cowboy sure could ride hard. It was mind blowing on both their ends.
"No. I just think this is artsy. Instead of people right away seeing a screenshot of you and me, if they peek at my phone while I'm using it, they'll see some random hands behind my apps instead."
"Don't you think they'll recognize them as ours?"
Irvine popped Squall on the thigh with the back of his hand. "When was the last time you examined someone's hand?"
"Good point." With a content sigh, he said disheartened. "We better get back."
"Yeah."
Night pass or not, the two them staying out together, returning together, was very telling.
"I'll go ahead of you." Squall stated. He leaned over to Irvine and kissed him. "See you there."
"Yeah. I'm gonna shower first, I danced too hard."
"Okay."
He stood up, stretched his arms over his head, then headed for the bathroom as if the drop of his arms was the announcement for the start of a race. By the time he exited the shower, Squall was gone. Likely halfway to the campsite, if he wasn't there already. Irvine whistled a tune as he tied back his damp hair before strolling out.
He was about to pass beneath the large clock when a muffled voice called out his name. "Kinneas!" He turned his head and heard a whisper in his ear. Everything began to slow down...
At the campsite.
Squall wondered, with a scowl firmly in place, why Zell was snoozing so peacefully in his tent. He was about to shake the stuffing out of him when he was suddenly yanked from his halfway place in the tent entryway.
"The second person position is already filled, Seifer, sorry."
"This isn't about that,"
"Then what - -..."
His words barely got out before the response came. He almost missed it.
"The Deling hospital called, Irvine's been admitted."
Squall's world suddenly slowed down to a stop.
