He did not, however, shout at me.
I felt a cramp just as we began the walk to the bio lab. Oh, how nice. Now my period had arrived to further plague me. Being late, it would be heavy, troublesome and messy. Thank Shiva I’d bought supplies.
We entered the elevator. Hojo keyed in numbers before turning his attention to his eternally constant clipboard. He’d done quite a bit today and his hair reflected that. It was everywhere, lending credence to the stereotype of mad scientists worldwide.
The cramp became a breathtaking stab of pain. I gasped, bending over, my arm going out for a brace. I felt his forearm under my hand.
“Miss Grey?”
I felt all the blood drain from my face. It ran down my legs, pooling on the elevator floor.
He prevented me falling to my knees. “Miss Grey?” When I didn’t answer, he stabbed a button on the elevator wall. “Jean, meet me in bio-lab, stat,” he barked. “Michael, clean up and come with him.”
Everything faded to pain and fuzzy images. I felt Hojo pick me up and carry me from the elevator. Voices seemed to pass by me like lights reflected on a strobe. The world grew steadily darker…

-“What is it, sir?”-
-“IUD puncture, if I’m any judge.”-

-“Check the other females on staff.”-
*****************************************************
-“Five more, sir.”-
-“Sedate them and set up blood donors.”-

-“Vic’s out of danger.”-
-“Good. Take her out of here. Get her back so she can rest.”-

“Wake up, my dear.”
I slapped at the hand gently shaking me. I wanted to sleep. Who kept trying to wake me up?
A dark chuckle. “Alright, just lay still and tolerate me, then. I’ll be quick and I won’t hurt you.”
I felt careful hands under my knees, parting my legs.
“I had to dilate your cervix to remove the IUD, Miss Grey. Right now I’m making sure you’ve closed to your proper expansion.”
Gentle invasion, slight pressure. No pain.
I heard the voice sigh. “You’re going to be fine, my dear,” it said soothingly. “You sleep.”
******************************************************
“You have to wake her, sir; she’s slept an entire day.”
“She’ll sleep as long as she needs to, Michael.”
“But-.”
“Michael, I’m the doctor.”
“I know, sir, but-.”
“I know, Michael,” the voice said quietly. “Trust me.”
“I do trust you, sir.”
“Then allow your new friend to rest; let me look after her. I won’t allow her to come to harm.”
“I never thought you’d let her get hurt.”
“I love you too, Michael. Do me a favor and check on the others.”

I had to pee so badly I thought I would burst. Struggling up, I scanned the room. My bedroom. Mouth like cotton, I swung my legs over the side of the bed. If I didn’t get to the toilet in a few minutes I’d have an accident. But, I felt too weak to get there.
Hojo appeared at my side. “Relax,” he said, taking my hands. “You have to visit the lavatory? I’ll help you.”
I let those warm, strong hands curl around my own. “Professor,” I whimpered. Oh, fuck. My pelvis just radiated agony. I felt cored out, hollow inside.
“I know,” he said. “It hurts.”
“Yes.” I half fell out of the soft, comforting blankets. Strong, capable arms wrapped around me.
“It won’t last long, Miss Grey, I promise.” Hojo picked me up. I let my head fall to his shoulder. “Do you want something for the pain?”
“Yes, sir.” I clung to him. “Oh, god, what happened?”
“Another attempt upon you and my entire staff, not just my personal slaves.” Hojo carried me into the bathroom and stood me beside the toilet, holding me up. “And, almost three quarters of Shin-Ra’s personnel.” Taking me by the shoulders, he gently pulled my gown up, revealing my underwear. “This isn’t centered toward you, me, or the lab; we were just the first ones targeted.” He put my hands on his shoulders. “Brace on me, my dear,” he instructed.
“My best guess is militant resistance is attempting to take us out from the inside.” Hojo knelt in front of me slowly, letting me push on his shoulders for balance. He eased down my underwear, which held a pad big enough for a menstruating fat chocobo.
The sight of all that blood made me slightly sick. Blood had never bothered me before, but it didn’t look like I should have a drop left in my body.
He lowered me to the toilet.
I could barely keep my head up. I didn’t even care he stood with me while I tried to release my bladder. “How? My IUD…?”
“A magnet.” Hojo put his hand on my forehead. “Copper IUD’s have a ferrous core. Someone rigged an electromagnet using the metal and electronics all over this compound. We’ve had one hundred and eighty five injuries on par with yours.” He braced me. “Go ahead and pass your water. Trust me, Miss Grey. As a doctor I am unimpressed with any and all bodily functions.”
I went ahead and peed, my forehead on his arm. It felt heavenly to release the terrible pressure. Groggy, woozy, when I finished I sat up as straight as I could, groping for the toilet paper. “Thank you,” I murmured. “I feel so sick.”
“I know, my dear,” he murmured. “You would feel sicker than most; you stood beside the worst electromagnetic field in the building. And, you bled enough to die. I put four pints into you.”
I didn’t even care he took it upon himself to wipe me. After setting me back to rights with a clean pad, he picked me up again. “You’ll sleep a little more and then you’ll eat,” he said. ‘Do you want Michael to check on you?”
“Okay,” I sighed.
“Okay,” he chuckled softly. I felt the soft mattress under me. “Rest. I’ll bring Michael in.”
Before long I felt a familiar, hard body beside of mine. “Michael?” I asked, rolling to meet that strong frame.
“I’m here, Vic,” he said, wrapping his arms around me. “Poor sweetie. You must feel like you’ve been run over by a truck.”
“Oh, Michael,” I said, feeling tears well up in an instant. “What happened?” I felt so drugged, so sleepy. Only half of Hojo’s words even made it into my brain. I couldn’t remember most of what he’d said.
“Someone rigged the entire compound to pull the specific metal in IUD’s,” he answered. “Nearly two hundred women got a punctured uterus. You were the first to have emergency surgery.” He pulled me close, cradling my head against his flat, solid chest. “The master saved them all. No one died.”
Michael wrapped his arms around me. “I don’t have to tell you, the master is furious. And, Rufus himself came down a few hours ago. He’s beside himself. We’ve got a saboteur amongst us.”
“I don’t care,” I sighed.
“I don’t imagine you care about fuck-all,” Michael said, laughing, enveloping me in his strong embrace. “You were the first to collapse. Daddy Hojo worked on you more than two hours just to give you a fighting chance.” He rolled me, putting me under the blankets and surrounding me in warm safety. “You were totally fucked up, Vic. I’m amazed you’re alive.”
“Hmmm,” I answered.
“Look, I gotta go. I’ve been here with you for fourteen hours.” He eased out slowly. “I have to check on Rose. She had an IUD too. You alright to leave?”
“I’m okay,” I sighed, reluctant to give up that masculine strength yet. “You go ahead. Thanks. Hope your girl is okay.”
“Love ya, Vic,” Michael said as he slid from my bed. “I’ll send in the replacement. You just sleep, ‘k?”
“M-hmm.”
I drifted, feeling lonely and cold without Michael. A beam of golden light shone upon me. I soon felt a warm, hard body join me in the squishy bed. I rolled toward it, uncaring of whom it might be. “Just hold me,” I asked of the firm, muscled frame.
Strong, long arms enveloped me.
“So confused,” I admitted to my bed partner. “But, you feel nice.”
“Good,” the dark, husky voice replied. “Sleep now, my dear. I won’t let anything or anyone come near you.”
“Hojo?” I asked.
“Yes.” Those strong arms tightened, enveloping me in warm, firm safety. “I’m here.”
I burrowed my face down to that hard warmth, feeling assured; Hojo always meant what he said. My body relaxed. “I’m sick,” I confessed, half hoping my savior would fix me.
“I know you are, my dear,” he said. “Sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up, I promise.”
I believed him.
Modern IUD's do not contain ferrous metal of any kind. This cannot happen. This is merely a plot device from my sicko head.
