Tifa was walking back to the bar, both her hands holding her stomach, when she seen Cloud go speeding by on his bike. He must be making runs still. No other reason for him to be on this side of town. Unless he stopped by the bar for some clothes. He didn’t actually live at Seventh Heaven but he spent the night there more than anywhere else. She absent mindedly rubbed her stomach as she stood there, staring in the direction Cloud had gone.
How was she going to tell him she was pregnant? How was he going to react? Was he going to be mad at her? Did it matter? A little, if she were to be completely honest with herself. It would hurt her if Cloud was angry at her for Vincent, but it wouldn’t change her decision. She was keeping her baby. With or with out Vincent.
A silent tear slipped out as she blinked to roll down her cheek. She wiped the tear and forced herself not to shed anymore tears. Inside, she just wanted to lie on her bed and cry. She had no false hopes that Vincent would forgive her of this. As far as he knew, she dumped him to be with Cloud.
She rubbed her stomach once more before continuing her walk to the bar. She let her thoughts of the baby carry her back to the bar and inside. Opening was in a matter of minutes by the time she walked in. Nanaki was already settled in the back and away from sight but his inhuman senses would pick up everything. She opened the door and went back to sitting behind the bar, ready to have a nice days work. Sort of.
_____________ Mean While ______________
Vincent sat in a bar across the district, at a table behind the man named Michael and three other men. Vincent sat silently as he listened to the men talking. He had his long raven hair pulled up and tucked under a baseball cap. Even he hadn’t recognized himself when he left. After here he was going to Seventh Heaven to report to Nanaki. And over see things at the bar. Just in case.
“What if this little girl really has nothing to do with Charlie vanishing?”
“Then it would be three less scum dirtying our city.” Michael waved his hand absently.
“Hold on, Michael. These three people you are talking about are three of the ones who saved the planet from Sephiroth and Meteor.”
“So?” Michael asked. “They are yesterday’s news and it’s time for them to rest anyways.”
“They are part of AVALANCHE. The blonde and the girl are big parts of the team. You hurt them; the whole team will come down on you.”
“Then I suggest we not leave a trace of us ridding them.” Michael chuckled.
“Can I take your order?” The server was standing beside Vincent.
“Can I get the house special?” He had not even bothered to look at the menu.
“Johnathan,” Michael’s loud voice was low enough that Vincent had to strain to hear him. “The plan is simple, we’ll go in right about the same time we did the other night. She seems to be alone around that time. If she hasn’t got him for us then we kill her and wait for the blonde.”
“And if the blonde doesn’t show up?” The man, presumably Johnathan, asked.
“Then we wait until he does.”
“What if he isn’t alone?” Another voice asked.
“Then, Allan, We take them out as well.”
There was a shuffling and Michael was suddenly walking by Vincent. Vincent noticed that he walked with a slight limp on the right side. They could use that to their advantage.
“Kerrian,” Johnathan spoke from directly behind Vincent. “If he ever finds out what happened to Charlie, we’re all dead.”
“If he finds out then it is because your big mouth told him so I will kill you next.” His voice was cold and held great threat. This was the one they needed to worry about when it came down to a fight.
“I’m not saying anything. And Allan is too terrified of Michael to be the bearer of bad news.”
“Those two will take the fall and we’ll leave it at that. And Michael doesn’t scare me. I’m just not ready to make my move against him.”
_______________ Few Hours Later ________________
Patrons were still coming in going from the bar. Tifa hadn’t sat down or had a thought to her self since she opened the doors. Occasionally she’d see the red orange of Nanaki at the top of the stairs. She still hadn’t confronted him about knowing she was pregnant but that was the first order of business once the bar closed.
“Tifa.” Jason called out to her from across the room.
“One minute Jason. I got to get these drinks to that table over there.” She nodded in the general direction of the latest customers.
“Suit yourself.” Jason’s speech was slurred from the liquor he’d consumed.
Tifa spared a moment to think about what he meant by that statement before another customer called out to her. She nodded to acknowledge the customer and rushed to deliver the drinks she already had in her hands.
She had just got back to the bar to take the next customers order when the front door to the bar opened and Cloud stepped through the door. The look on his face was one of barely controlled rage. The noise level of the bar dropped to a silent hush as Cloud’s gaze narrowed in on Tifa.
“Bar is closing early. Everyone please gather your things and leave at once.” He said as he walked through the room to the stairs. “I’ll be down to talk to you in a minute Tifa.”
Tifa watched him ascend the stairs as everyone else in the room gathered their belongings and filed out the bar. When Cloud made a command, everyone followed. That was one of the reasons he led AVALANCHE. Still, she didn’t think she really wanted to find out what had angered him so. Had he found out about hers and Vincent’s relationship?
Cloud reached the top of the stairs and turned towards his room before pulling up short. Nanaki sat outside his bedroom door, his tail jerked in a semblance of annoyance. Or maybe was just projecting.
“You have no right Cloud?”
He had went straight to Cid’s after leaving Seventh Heaven. He had wanted to see Yuffie and make his mind up that it had been her who is pregnant. He didn’t know how to approach the conversation but he was spared from having to do so when him and Yuffie had taken a walk through the woods near by.
“Cloud, can I ask you a question?” Yuffie had stopped walking and was looking down at her feet.
“Sure, Yuffie, I’m here to help anytime you need it.” His relief was barely contained. She obviously wanted to talk to someone about the baby. Meaning she was the one pregnant. That also made him curious why she would want to talk to him instead of Cid or Barrett. Or even Tifa for that matter.
“If you were dating a woman and she wasn’t ready to take the relationship to the next level, what would you do?”
Cloud was so confused he just stood there and stared at her. The thoughts rushing through his head were to jumbled and fast for even him to understand them.
Yuffie looked up after he didn’t respond and must have seen something in his look that made her instantly defensive and angered.
“You’re just like Cid.” She yelled at him as she took a step back. “Always assume me to just be sleeping with everyone and their cousin. And I thought you would be the most understanding and easiest to talk to.
“Yuffie, I –“ Cloud started.
“Save it. Why don’t you go back and let Cid know I am just as pure and unsoiled as the day I was born.”
That clicked some sense into Cloud’s head. “You mean you aren’t pregnant?”
“Pregnant?” Yuffie looked appalled. “I haven’t even had sex. I’m not ready for that.”
“You’re not pregnant?” His voice shook and this time it was him who looked down at his feet.
“No, Cloud, I am not pregnant.” Yuffie softened her voice as she spoke. Something was off about this.
“You’re not pregnant.” He whispered.
Yuffie didn’t respond. It wasn’t a question. Had he really thought she was pregnant? What had Cid been telling him about her? At that thought, her anger mounted once more and she stormed off. She had some things to go off on Cid about. And he was going to hear her out or she was going to rip him to pieces.
Cloud shook his head to clear the memory and focused back in on Nanaki.
“You knew?”
“She still hasn’t told me. So don’t try to use this to fuel your anger. She didn’t know until today.”
Cloud shook his head again. “She didn’t tell me she was sleeping with anyone.”
“Does it anger you that she didn’t tell you she was seeing someone or does it anger you that she didn’t spend the rest of her life waiting for you to notice how she had felt about you?”
Cloud opened his mouth to tell Nanaki off and then closed his mouth once again. Had he really expected Tifa to just wait around forever and see if his feelings for her would change? Had he cared for her all along? Both answers came to him quickly. Yes, he had expected her to wait. And yes, he did care for her as she had always cared for him. And now it was too late. His anger dissipated. He sighed and looked over his shoulder.
“Any suggestions on how to fix this?” He asked Nanaki before turning back to look at him.
“Support her.”
“Who is he?” Cloud asked with out thinking the question through.
Would knowing who the guy was anger him more? How much was he going to hate the man who had taken his Tifa? His Tifa? She wasn’t his anymore. She was never his because he never laid his claim. Instead he pushed her away and brushed her affections off.
“It’s not my place to tell you anything about this.”
Nanaki’s body tensed and he growled low in his throat before bounding off behind Cloud and down the stairs. On instinct, Cloud reached for his sword and started down the steps with Nanaki.
They both hit the landing at the same time. Cloud with his sword in hand and Nanaki growling. A startled Tifa turned towards them both with a shot glass in one hand and towel in the other. She was about to ask what was going on when the front door opened.
A man strode in with a baseball cap on. Tifa knew instantly who the man was. She could feel him in her blood as if he was the missing part of herself. Nanaki visibly relaxed and ducked his head. Cloud, still not knowing who it was started towards the man, sword posed ready.
“Vincent?”
Cloud stumbled at the name but what made him stop was the sound of desperation and pain laced in that one word from Tifa. He turned back to look at Tifa over his shoulder as Vincent pulled the baseball cap off and allowed his hair to fall around him.
“Cloud?” Vincent’s voice was cool and detached. “Always greet patrons with bared sword?”
“Vincent,” Nanaki stepped around Cloud. “You smell bad. I didn’t know it was you until you walked into the room.”
Vincent tilted his head and looked around the room. There were four heart beats. Not counting his own. But only three people. Well, two people and a beast. But there should only be three other heart beats in this room. Nanaki’s heart beat was the same fast paced as normal. Clouds had finally started to slow. Tifa’s heart was still pounding and the fourth heart beat was steady but faster than an average person.
“Nanaki, something is wrong. I need some help. Can you come with me for a second?” He turned and walked out the room. He couldn’t report to Nanaki in front of Tifa and if he heard a fourth heart beat then Nanaki did as well. They were being spied on.
Vincent walked out the front door and far enough away that he and Nanaki could not be over heard but he could still hear inside clearly. The unexplained heart beat was no longer audible unless he strained his hearing. Which made sense if the person was hiding well enough.
“Cloud, we need to talk.” He heard Tifa say as soon as the door closed behind Nanaki.
“Yes. We do.” Cloud took a deep breath and his next words came tumbling so fast Vincent wasn’t sure he caught it all. “I’ve loved you for a long time and just couldn’t bring myself to admit it.”
There was a silence in the room. Vincent looked down at Nanaki who sat patiently, also listening to the conversation.
“Cloud, no.” Tifa’s voice broke slightly and she spoke really quietly.
“I already know it’s too late and I want to tell you congratulations.”
Vincent’s heart soared as he understood that Tifa had told Cloud about the two of them.
“I hate him.” Cloud said with enough anger to level all of Midgar.
Vincent’s hand moved instantly to the hilt of Peacemaker. Seems he had lost a friend. It bothered him to know this but it couldn’t be too broken up about it so long as Tifa was his.
“You can’t say that? You don’t know who he is.”
“I want to meet him.”
“And if I said you already have?”
The sound of fabric rustling came to Vincent and he pictured the blonde shaking his head. The spikes moving freely. He didn’t know who it was. Only she was seeing someone? Or were they even talking about him anymore?
“Does he know? Is that why you aren’t with him now? Did he leave after you told him?” The hatred in Cloud’s voice was clear.
“No one knows but you and I. And I think Nanaki knows but I have not been able to approach him about it.”
“He knows.” Some of the anger was gone. “You don’t have to tell him if you don’t want too. No one has to know and we can raise it as our own. No one will ever know the difference.”
Vincent’s breath came in sharply as he considered all the possibilities of what Cloud had just said. Pieces started clicking together in his mind.
“I’m sorry Cloud. It’s too late for us. I’m in love with him and I will tell him after I fix this. And even if he decides to leave after I tell him, I won’t lie to our friends and say the baby is yours. I’d be betraying him every time I opened my mouth.”
“Can I at least meet him?”
“You know him very well.”
“Who?”
“The night we fought and I left. I ran into Vincent. I have been staying with Vincent.”
“Vincent? As in Valentine?” Cloud sounded as shocked as Vincent felt.
“You can’t hate him.”
There was a long silence where only the sounds of Nanaki breathing could be heard.
“No.” Cloud finally answered. “I can’t. Valentine is a good guy. He won’t leave you when you tell him. If anything, you will only make sure he stays in your life for ever.”
“That’s what I am hoping for.”
“If I am wrong and he hurts you, Tifa, I will kill him and there is nothing you can say or do to stop me.”
Vincent didn’t recall walking to the door or walking into the bar but suddenly both Tifa and Cloud were looking at him with Nanaki behind him. Tifa looked shocked and slightly scared. Cloud’s look was measuring.
“I will not be part of you keeping the baby.” Vincent didn’t bother to look at Tifa. His eyes were on Cloud. Cloud’s hand rested on the hilt of his sword. “Call me when this situation has been handled.” He said to Cloud before turning around and walking from the room.
Nanaki followed after Vincent as Tifa ran up stairs crying. Cloud stood in the middle of the room by himself. Torn between his three choices. He could run upstairs and comfort Tifa. He knew her heart was broken and she was in pain. He could run after Vincent and beat some sense to him, or just beat him for good measure. Or he could leave and let things work themselves out on their own. He had had no part in this fight.
“But didn’t you?” A small voice inside him knew he was to blame for all this. Vincent had told him to go comfort Tifa that day. Instead he had run off. Just like he always did when things got to emotional for him. Just like he was going to do this time.
With that thought, Cloud reached into his pocket and headed out the door towards Fenrir. This time he was going to take a nice and long trip. Tifa was a strong womon and she would figure out how to fix this on her own.
