Zell leaped out of the way from another slice of ice cutting down at him from Shiva. He didn't know what was more exhausting, dodging the menacing Guardian Force or battling the Glacial Eyes swarming around him. He once boasted that he could train for days, no breaks except for bathroom usage. But this was the pits!
"Rrrr..." He staggered to his knees when a sharp tail whacked him between the shoulderblades; but pushing his feet into the frozen blades of grass he did a hand-spring to regain composure on his feet.
He can hear the screams of everyone in town dwindling and growing around him, their blue faces and shivering bodies answered the unasked question of what conditions they were in within the ice dome. If he doesn't dispatch Shiva, they'll likely freeze to death!
'Ma... and Pop..' He hoped like hell Squall and everyone got to the Sorceress on time to stop her, if he couldn't.
Dodging another attack from Shiva, he backed right into the severing red beam of the Glacial Eye; his shoulder screamed from the plasma shot, he's had enough! Popping his fist together hard enough to cause the metal on his gloves to ring, Zell unleashed his limit break on every Glacial Eye in the vicinity.
Things weren't going so good with the search team. The monsters in the sky, flying towards their queen, either didn't see it or chose to go through the obstacle in their path, in which case it was their Tram.
"Duck!" Seifer called being the first down as the glass shattered from monsters lunging through then out of the windows of the craft.
Frightened, the pilot struggling from his seatbelt and down onto the floor, after putting the craft in auto-pilot. But that wasn't enough to keep them from harm as they were bombarded with a beating of talons and wing tips from the flying hell passing through. The maelstrom of monsters hit the Tram from every angle possible, bursting the metal apart like a paper bag being blown into to fill it with air to be popped. An alarm sounded from the dashboard alerting the pilot of engine failure and other such troubles and the bright red emergency lights were barely visible as the box filled with thick black smoke.
The pilot was crying out from a Thrustaevus getting at him with his thick taloned feet cutting through his clothes and nicking his skin. Seifer used his chi to blast the bird loose, then he crawled over to the pilot to cover him. He wanted the hit his head against a hard surface when an array of prayers and sorrowful "good byes" went out to the man's family and loved ones. Gravity working against them lifted the passengers up into the air as the craft declined.
"We're goin' down!" Irvine yelled over the noise.
And they were going down fast! The three SeeD members cast Float on themselves; Squall cast his once again on the pilot. They can't fly, perse, the way float works is to use gravitational force to hover above a solid mass, and being nowhere near the ground is going to send them for a drop until they are. So at best they'll be taking part in a really fancy fall- granted they could find space between the onslaught to get out a window.
"Irvine!" Squall instructed.
"I'm on it."
They couldn't use magic on the already burning craft, that could cause a massive explosion not to mention that in such a tight space they'd likely hit themselves as well. Irvine used a standard handgun tucked away in his shoulder-holster; the rounds are junctioned with Slow, and as the pile of monsters were hit with a bullet having the spell casted on them, they slowed down long enough for Squall, Irvine, and Seifer to cast Haste and escape before the opening was covered by another- faster- creature because even with the monsters slowed down, junctioned magic doesn't work every time so the escapees still suffered a mosh-pit beating on their way out of the windows.
The spooked pilot yelled and shouted the entire tumble towards land; Seifer is holding onto him so the man didn't just drop like a stone. Regardless the Float cast, the man wouldn't be able to steer himself properly being too busy working through the pain of the magic running through his system. They weren't exactly the poster boys for calm either, the drop was just a little too high and a little too quick for their liking but they kept their cool on the outside. Dropping downward their path was blocked by monsters speeding by around them and they hit them in a terrible slew. They were bashed and battered but it slowed them a bit from the free-fall. Float had to be re-casted when it wore off half way to the ground. With stability now close enough to catch them the spell worked as it should supporting them in a firm buoyant hover, before they dropped to their feet shortly after the catch.
"Heh, that was pretty close, huh?" Irvine laughed through his panic.
'Too close.' Thought Squall panting at the ground. Still in a slump he looked around them. "Are we in Centra?"
"Fuck Centra, are we alive?" Seifer asked from his adrenaline daze. "Because I feel fucking dead." He held his thoroughly bolstered side.
The ex-knight was sure that if he wasn't carrying extra weight the drop wouldn't have hurt as much, and neither would the contact from the passing monsters. But holding onto the pilot he hit them with twice the weight and at a bad angle while trying to keep the civilian in one piece. How did he get assigned to the job?
A pale blue and pink glow popped out of thin air and swirled all around them, including the fainted pilot. It was fortunate because he doesn't have to feel the sting of Curaga pumping through his veins while his cuts sizzled closed and healed. The 3 SeeD members watched as their craft didn't make it to the ground, the vehicle was a fiery explosion from a large Blue Dragon finishing it off by smashing into it; so intense was their focus on the destination that they didn't even notice it when metal debris stabbed into their flesh and bone, they just continued on their way to Centra.
Each of them stumbled a bit when getting to their feet but the injuries were fading fast until they were able to walk, as per usual, towards the mountains. Beyond the peek would hopefully be their destination, if not, they'd need another mode of transportation though by air seems more dangerous now than any other means.
"That one train I said was running, we could call and have it sent our way," Seifer threw it out there when seeing the lost look on his rival's face.
"Running, but who'll be the engineer?" replied Squall. "Surely the civies have been locked down in their homes by now-" shrugging his hand, he added, "the broadcast has been going for a while. And we can't ask someone without training to risk themselves like that... I know I thought of it before, but that was the panic talking."
Looking from Squall to Seifer and seeing no solution between them, Irvine unconsciously grabbed his loose hair into a ponytail; silently cursing that he lost the band during the fall and would have to wear it out; throwing in his input he said. "So like... It's a far cry for a solution, but... maybe we could summon Doom Train? We could battle one, and then ride it the rest of the way to Centra- if it stays in our command."
'That could work... But do we have anything to battle it with?' Thought Squall.
Knowing Doom Train deals in bio effects, he knows they won't stand a chance if they all get effected and can't cast dispels on each other. And their duffels with the potions and such were on the Tram and thus destroyed along with it. Even novices know that junctions aren't as reliable as they should be.
Seifer shook his head. "I'm not gonna spend what little magic we have on fighting a G.F.- and you know it'll be a big job Kinneas. We don't know what the fuck with this Sorceress, so we should keep all we have, if she can morph us into monsters whose to say we'll have time to Draw more during battle..." He shrugged a hand and added to Irvine's thought. "What about fusing with our Espers? They might give us at least a statistics boost to get across the area faster than days or hours."
"It's unnecessary Seifer, I can simply grow and carry you all on my back... Squall, you can use the Phoenix as well, if you cast him." Suggests the Esper.
Palidor, who'd been flying along side the craft landed on Irvine's shoulder a tiny palm-sized bird, after having to maneuver through the torrent of monsters, but having come in at the tail-end of the conversation it figured out what they were talking about and only suggested a different means of transportation for Squall since it knows it's not the lion's favorite helper.
Getting the hint, he shook his head. "It's fine, we'll go on you." Removing his gunblade from the hip holster he held it out blade flat prevent slicing into the Esper as he climbed onto its back. "Can you get us there before the day breaks?"
"I'll do my best," replied the bird hopping down from it's perch to the dirt. It grew to its natural size of a skyscraper, and dropping its tail to the dirt waited for them to board and secure a seat amongst it's thick feathers before it spread its wings and shot through the air like a canon from a barrel.
The wind was more than they'd bargained for and they had to grab a hold of the feathers tightly enough that their fingertips dug into their palms. Good thing their transportation had a mind of its own, because the turbulence is so strong none of them can open their eyes. They would arrive to their destination in no time, their only concern now would be if they were properly prepared. At least they have room for error since they have a plan B happening in Esthar.
Esthar was buzzing with activity of guards shuffling about and escorting civilians to a safe haven within the walls. A Moomba was being prepped for the mission back at the palace. It would do anything for Laguna and was ready whenever the engineering was ready.
Ellone stood beside the lion-esque creature, she was being prepped as well. She didn't know if she could convey instructions so clearly, but it was worth a try to save the planet from this infection. She was turned into the plan but the Moomba was the fail-safe.
"Miss Loire, your car is ready."
"Thank you, Stein." Turning to Laguna, she gave him a hug. Though she was in no danger from this, she needed to reassure him that everything was going to be fine. He kissed her cheek and wished her, and the Moomba, luck before she walked out the door.

Kait and Hyland crept through the polished halls of the laboratory in search of Dr. Odine, when something dawned on the white haired Galbadian. Tapping Kait's shoulder, he waited until they made eye contact before speaking. "What is it that we're doing here exactly?"
"I already told you, I. Don't. Know... Frankly, I thought we could do sentry duty inside of the labs but..." He opened a door looking left then right with a frown, it was empty of anything useful and the lights were off which meant no one was using it at all. 'Where is everyone?' Kait recalled that this was the research lab instead of the quarantine building. 'Maybe we should leave?'
He took in the scene beyond another door when they moved up the hall, beyond the rectangle piece of glass showed scientists of every age and each gender bustling about the room. Cocking his head to look farther inside, he's shoved aside by Hyland who wanted a look as well.
"Lab nerds," muttered the Galbadian to himself. "What are they doing to those people?"
Shoving him aside, Kait asked. "What people?" Spying the back of the room where pods line the back wall, he can see half transformed people sleeping inside. 'Are they looking for a cure?' He didn't know why else these people would be locked up. He felt his own transformation stirring when a lab tech pulled a lever shocking the only person awake at the moment.
"Ze infection doesn't seem to respond to direct pain to ze host," Odine said; hands behind his back he paced over to the second test subject. "And neither does removing ze infected blood... It'z almost a dormant disease... Fascinating. Utterly fascinating."
"Hey! What are you two doing there?" A guard spotted them as he was coming up the hall.
Panicked, Kait pushed on the lab's door having it slide open for them and they dashed inside as the guard bolted towards them to give chase. Gotta love a wild card of simple breaking and entering to keep from being run from your location. Hyland followed like a good little patsy, but he wasn't as quick to approach Dr. Odine as Kait, preferring to stay back and eyeball the guard who was trying to rangle them.
"Aaa, you must be ze people from ze palace," Odine greeted with an odd sort of smile. He was pleased to see someone so young and vital ready to try something new and untested.
"That's us, the palace people." Kait replied with a shrug to Hyland's baffled glance.
He doesn't know what's going on, but he does know he's from the palace. And if there was a job to be done he'd volunteer to do it- how hard could it be? The soldiers who were actually supposed to be here were just out of luck.
"Wonderful! And vat period of time do you wish to travel?" his strange accent was becoming thicker with anticipation.
"Travel? Period of time?" Hyland abandoned his non-verbal threat to the guard who'd chased them into the room, to address the situation with this scientist properly. "What are you tal-..." His mouth is covered by Kait's hand.
"Wherever we were told to go; there wasn't much time to be briefed with everyone in a panic, so could you give us some idea of what's happening?" his eyes scrunched when he felt moisture against the palm of his hand from Hyland licking it in order to gross him out so he can be freed, but the tortured Kinhart endured it.
Odine eyed them suspiciously for both the needing to know what the experiment was and their odd behavior, but he didn't really care who went in so long as his experiment got a test run. Being the creator of the magnificent was often met with this sort of behavior, people not wanting to risk anything in the name of science and creation. So unworthy was mankind to scientific intelligence.
"Come zis way." He swung around and walked the pair out of the room and into an attached room in back.
Leaning forward Hyland whispered hard into the back of Kait's ear. "This guy's a fucking quack! Time travel? There's no such thing..."
"Says you, and you're no expert..." Hissed Kait. "I think I know what's going on here, he must have come up with an idea to travel back through time in order to prevent this war from happening. Can you imagine?"
"Yes! And I see fire and brimstone from a half baked plan." Giving his rival a shove, he continued into the room after them.
Spreading his arms out like he were before an expensive piece of art, he said in awe of it himself. "Here she is... Beautiful."
Kait cocked a brow then turned to the man and commented. "It's a wall."
"It's a portal," corrected the scientist, walking over to a control panel. "I call it ze Junction Machine Ellone II!" The youths were unimpressed, so the doctor went on. "Let me show you kids a thing or two."
Heading over, they look at a large console filled with switches and buttons all powered down but soon would hum with life and glow with the energy passing through it. Hyland shook his head when seeing the dial that would set the date.
"Excuse me, lunatic?" he grinned when the scientist eyed him with contempt made to look even more menacing because of the strange red and white collar encircling his head. It almost seemed like he could tilt it and have it spinning like that old childrens toys, the See and Say. "How exactly does this toy of yours work? What's it powered by? How can you be sure we won't just smack into a wall once we go up those stairs?"
"I'll have you know I helped construct most of Esthar's esteemed transportation modules, science is my life- vether on man or machine."
"But this is time travel we're talking about... No one can just construct something like this on the fly."
"Of course no one can, because no one vas smart enough to think of it... But I go beyond the work assigned to me and continue it to greatness." A twinkle sparkled in the man's hungry gaze. "Ever wonder vat happened to all zose trapped compressions of time ven zey were sealed up?"
Both teens shook their heads, shrugged, then nodded. It was a good question, they just thought they'd been closed. Like a hole dug into the dirt filled with concrete. Over and done.
"I have removed the warp, the time, the messed up fluctuation in our world. In other words, I've sucked the warp up through a straw and concealed it inside of mechanism zat can not only hold onto it, but alter it." Odine beamed. "I worked and reworked the notes from my previous invention, created after I experimented on the brain waves of Ellone Loire. The original machine took a person to ze future- it was Ultimacia's doing, but this one is more based on Ellone's power and can move a person through the past."
"Right." The Galbadian rolled his eyes, crossing his arms in the process.
"Oh no? Zen prepare to have your teenaged angst slapped in the face- behold." The machine was turned on with a flicker of uninterrupted jolts from first the console then the warp portal.
Both teens did look slapped in the face as they approached the portal. Looking into a glowing mass of light, they gasp when seeing images flashing around like a mirror reflecting anything it pleased rather than a reflection of the person standing before it.
"This... can't be real..." Hyland cocked his head, staring in complete disbelief and interest. Could it really be a time portal?
Pleased to have shut up the white haired teen, Dr. Odine preened. "It sure is, you little mite." Fingers steepled together, he cocked his head at the swirl of space time. "Who's first?"
"I'll go-.."
"Wait!" Grabbing Kait by the shoulders he led him over to a private area to talk to him. "You cannot be serious? Do you even know what this atrocity is for? Us... or him."
Kait understood his rival's meaning. This guy clearly had some screws loose, and would probably shove half of the Earth's population through there just to see what comes about. "It's not the point, we won't have to deal with the infection in any life time. We only have to get it right."
Hyland shook his head. "It's insane."
"It may be all we have... And as a soldier, as a member of SeeD... I can't just ignore a solution to a problem."
"You're not even SeeD yet! Do you know the first thing about time travel?"
"I know I can't run into myself, but if I go back before I was born then I won't have to. I'll give my dads the message- clean and clear- then get back."
"How? Hmm? How do you get back?" Knocking on his rival's forehead, he added. "Think before you act."
"Get back?" Kait ignored the rest. How was he going to get back? Addressing Odine with his question, he asked. "How will I get back once I've given the message?"
"Aa, yes, well... I was sure you were informed zat zis sort of thing iz not without flaw."
"See!" Hyland spat.
"But zat doesn't leave you out of options. Once the message is given I'm 66 percent positive you will be brought to vichever time period you currently belong... It's as simple as stretching a rubber band and having it snap back on itself."
A silence stretched between the three until finally Kait nodded.
"I can't run into myself in the past... Dr. Odine, can you send me back to before I was born? I'm sixteen..."
"Zen 2116 it iz." He touched the console like it were a tender baby. New to the world but so important and needed was the child. Setting the date, he then gestured at the machine. "Your story will be told, I'll write zis date down in my notes. Good luck, young man."
Nodding, he turned to Hyland and just stared. Growing uncomfortable with the length of study put upon him, the white haired teen shifted back and forth before asking. "What the hell are you looking at?"
Shaking his head with confusion, he replied. "I'm not sure... Maybe I'm just taking a moment to appreciate the last face I'll ever see for a while." Holding out his hand he smiled. "Here's to being a hero."
Hyland scoffed. "Don't be so damned corny- or arrogant, Kinhart... Just come back."
"Who knows, maybe in another lifetime..." He smiled kindly. "I'll allow myself to be friends with you."
Smiling in return, Hyland took the low road by saying. "You wish you could."
Rolling his eyes, Odine stamped his foot and snipped. "Vile we're young!"
Kait stood before the portal sucking his nerves away through an intake of breath, then he stepped through. Surrounded by white light he turned to take one last look around before going farther in.
Hyland clenched his fist in and out as he watched Kait inside the swirl of images and glow of light. Except for the fact that nothing was happening, everything seemed on the level as Kait's physical state of being went. He felt like an ass for allowing someone he cared about to go it alone, he could really run into trouble in another lifetime. 'It's settled then...'
Kait's vision blurred, or rather the lab before him did. It must be working! Something was wrong though. "What are you doing? Get out of here!" He snapped when his rival entered the portal.
"No. I'm not gonna let you do this on your own, even if we get fucked at least you won't be alone."
"I won't take long, the doctor said I'd rubberband back as soon as the deed is done... It won't be any different than my going to see a movie then emerging back into society."
Hyland glared at that sort of thinking, but maybe he was right. He bared his teeth when part of his arm seemed to glitch-out appearing almost smudged before it returned to normal. Body displacement? "I think it's starting." He said to Kait, who was smudging and reappearing himself.
They watched as images from 16 years ago swirled all around them like a tornado of the past. Memories and moments in time just swirling around and around. The Galbadian gasped when his friend disappeared then reappeared right before his eyes. Kneeling beside his dropped form, Hyland asked. "Are you ok? What happened? Why'd you come back?"
"I panicked, and then I just popped back here..." He brushed soil from his clothes. "I think I might have been underground somewhere..."
"Underground? Great, that means this thing has no control over where you're sent, you just get transported there."
"Maybe if I- we- concentrate on my house we can make it." Kait latched onto Hyland, not sure if it would help any for them locate to the same place or not, but it was a minor comfort he was willing to look foolish for.
"Kait! Kait?" A female voice called to him. The voice wiggled and waved from where they're kneeling, but he knew it was female and familiar. Looking beyond the open portal, he sees a familiar image. His aunt.
'Aunt Ellone? What's she doing here?' He wondered. His eyes widened when something dawned on him. 'Her gift sends people back in time. Doc Odine said that he fashioned the machine based on her ability. She could have been the one from the palace... That means I went through... Oh no.'
Hyland's grip on Kait slipped as his rival vanished again, but this time his arm slipped away completely with him. 'Kait's apartment. Kait's apartment.' He closed his eyes and thought.
"Turn it off! Get them back!" Ellone shouted at the doctor.
"Get zem back? Do you not know what is going on? Zis iz scientific research we're performing here- and who are you to disrupt me anyhow? Who let you in here?" His eyes sharpened. "Last time I checked your uncle was going to murder me for coming near you to... look you over again. I can't imagine he's changed his mind."
"I was sent to help deliver a message to the past. This Moomba," her hand gestured to the growling orange lion beside her, "was to go through the portal should things not work out with my abilities. How did my nephew get in there?"
"He told me he was ze volunteer, he and his brute of a friend..."
"Get him out of there!" Rushing over to the portal, Ellone called out. "Kait! Kait, can you hear me? Don't move! We're going to get you guys out of there!"
"Sir! A um... one of the test subjects has... It's coming this way!" His assistant cried from the entrance of the room.
A wave of fire shot past the door and after it the maker, a Red Dragon. It was following the running assistant until it spotted the small group in the portal room causing it to change direction and go after them instead.
The two teens appeared back inside the portal entrance in a blink. Looking around to see what's changed, if they've gone back or not Kait sees his aunt fleeing for her life. "Aunt Ellone!"
"Come on, we can save them..." Confusion crossed the Strand teen's face. "What do you mean 'no'? We have to save them.."
"This is how... We save them by carrying out the plan. I've already bungled things up this far... So we have to hurry..."
"But she's in trouble right now, we can get out of here and save her,"
"Two of us against a Red Dragon, do you really think that'll work?" Kait's somber tone calmed Hyland's flared up attitude. "It's not just aunt Elle, our families are out there fighting, and our friends... Leo lost one parent... I lost... My best friend is dead and I can't bring him back without doing this."
"So this is about Sorin?"
"It's about everyone; we're already here, we need to go... Now!"
"You're so fucking clueless about this... For the future then."
Nodding, Kait strengthened his grip on his rival's upper arms and together they vanished.

1814.
"Well, my arms are shot," Setzer was saying as the last box was placed upon a newly refurbished shelf now filled with random items instead of books.
Five of the war heros of the greatest magic war ever in existence are now spending their leisurely days cleaning and restoring the old castle beneath Castle Figaro in the desert area. King Edgar, his brother, Prince Sabin, Locke, Setzer and Terra, have been working vigorously to restore the hidden world beneath the moving castle. The reason for this was never made entirely clear, but for them it was something solid, something sane to do during these growingly peaceful times.
"I promise you a feast once we get back topside," Edgar commented on the unspoken declaration to quit. "We'll be going just as soon as my brother... aaah, there he is."
Sabin lowered the large shelf to the floor with ease before sliding it against the wall. "Cellar's clean and clear, Ed'..." He stretched his arms over his head, leaning his body left then right. It was a good training session moving all the shelves about. He loathed dusting and was glad there were willing volunteers to do it. "What about me now?"
"Nothing Sabin, we're going back up for refreshments and to call it a day."
"Good, I'm starved." Looking over his shoulder, he mentioned. "We'll have to redo the stairs to the root cellar, they creak a little too much to be sturdy, wouldn't want anyone to get hurt if they collapse."
"Noted." Edgar moved to the door.
"We should move this to the main castle, it's really not too bad for something painted in 1788," Locke walked out of a room holding a painting of a woman sniffing a rose.
"Lovely," Edgar admired it from the distance.
"Yes, it is," said Setzer admiring it as well. "I'd gladly buy it from you?"
Shaking his head, Edgar said. "You'll have to take it up with Locke, I'm afraid. I have no say."
The group move through the tunnel to the main castle, dormant and waiting for their return. When they walk beyond the palace doors a call is made out to the engineer to get her moving. And with the roar or machinery the castle lifts to the surface... But when it resurfaced not everyone arrived with it.
The End?
...
Commentary: Woo, you made it! The end. Thank you all so much for reading this and my other stories. As far as Final Fantasy goes I can go in two directions with this ending, I can carry on with a newer story that's got nothing to do with this mini series at all with just a hint of it though about what happened in the past of their new future. Or, I can do a crossover with my other favorite FF series, either way makes me all kinds of happy type-wise, but whichever I choose I'll definitely have traces of all three stories in it. Thanks again for reading, and voting or favoriting this story if you're reading somewhere else it means a lot to me with all FF7 and 13 fans out there.
