“Good job, Light! You managed to save enough souls to gain another day.” Hope exclaimed as she appeared before him on the arc.
“Yeah. I see that.” Lightning replied as she walked over to the floating cube beside her.
“How are you doing?” He asked, his question was almost robotic.
She didn’t say anything, trying to gather her thoughts from her previous visit with Snow. There was
something off about Hope. She couldn’t figure out what it was or maybe she didn’t want to believe it but he just didn’t seem like her Hope. Everything he said just felt rehearsed.
The Hope she remembered, the one she left on this planet so long ago, was rarely ever rehearsed. He often let his emotions take control of his thoughts. Blurting out whatever came to mind.
No matter the doubt she carried silently within her, he was still the boy she once knew. At least
physically. She kept telling herself maybe it was just because so much of the world had changed while she was away that he seemed so different.
“I’m glad you were able to save Snow. We almost lost him. The chaos that was in his palace was...” His sentence paused as he searched for the words. “Not many would have been able to survive that.”
“Not everyone is Snow.” Her voice was low as she headed toward the brightly lit pad she had gotten used to approaching to return to the world she was trying so desperately to save.
“No, they’re not. I’m just glad you were the one to save him. I think he needed that more than anything. I think…you needed it, too.” Hope said calmly as he prepared to send her back.
No more words were exchanged before she had appeared in the Dead Dunes. A vacant land of sand and ruins. It was horribly hot and she was finding herself more than annoyed with her choice of clothing. She took a moment to change into something more appropriate for the terrain. Finally deciding on the ‘Woodland Walker’ garb she had acquired recently.
She listened to Hope as he directed toward the bandit hideout that had been rumored to exist deeper in the desert. Running through the sand, sliding down the higher grounds, defeating random beasts that would appear…eventually leading her to Ruffian.
She met a man named Adonis that soon presented her with a task. A task that, had she been anyone else, may not have been completed but she was the savior. She had to do it.
When she returned with the news of her victory, he told her to follow him. To speak to the leader of the merry band of misfit bandits.
As she entered the small room, a sense of calm washed over her. It was a surprise even to her to feel such thing coming from anyone but Snow.
The room was cleanly decorated with various books and chests as she entered and a clearly worn sofa not far from the desk. As she got closer to the woman behind the desk, she knew. It was Fang.
“Fang?” She asked cautiously as she readied to attack the possible imposter.
“Calm your tits, savior. Yes. It’s really me.” She said defensively as she joked and turned to her once thought to be lost friend. “Surprise.”
“How...?” Light asked as she allowed her guard to drop.
“It’s a long, complicated story and we have things to do. I need your help to save Vanille.” Fang said matter-of-factly as she stood from her chair.
“Let’s go. You can explain on the way.” She ordered as they headed back into the sandy land she had grown to strongly dislike.
After hours of ruthlessly fighting through the underground ancient ruins, their journey was slowly
coming to an end. They could both feel it. The clavis.
Learning of their return to this world and where Vanille was, made her sad. Sad that she wasn’t there when they woke up. To help them adjust to this new life. However, she knew they had done it before and adapted just fine. Of everyone from her old team, Light knew Fang could handle anything that was thrown at her. Including protecting Vanille.
Their next battle was going to be a rough one. They could both sense it but they had to fight. For Vanille. So, that’s exactly what they did.
They defeated the beast that had been summoned before them only to discover the clavis was gone.
“Those BASTARDS!” Fang yelled in disappointment.
“It’s not over yet. We still have time.” Lightning replied as she tried to calm Fang. “I won’t let anything happen to her.”
“You’re right. You won’t. Neither will I. This is where we part ways. I’ll see you again soon, Light. I can’t sit around here and wait for answers. I’m going to find them.” Her smile was different this time. Filled with determination and fear. “You…have done all you can do for now, Light. I think you know where you need to be.” She winked as she turned to leave. Waving at her as she weaved her hips back and forth in a way only Fang could do.
Light looked around the now vacant chamber, sighing heavily as she sat on a nearby step burying her face into her hands.
The silence was interrupted by footsteps approaching her.
“C’mon. I’ll go with you to the station.” Fang’s voice sent tingles down her spine. “One last dance
through this sandy hell, yeah?” She extended her hand to Lightning.
Lightning accepted the gesture and they soon found themselves laughing as they ran through the
ancient hallways to the nearest exit.
“It kind of feels...right, doesn’t it?” Fang asked as they slowed their pace, approaching the train station.
“What does?” Light asked as she caught her breath.
“Me, going to Luxerion to spend whatever time I have left with Vanille. Even if she can’t see me, I know she’ll feel me watching over her.” She said casually as she took a few steps ahead of Light. “And you…You saving your former soon-to-be brother in law from a fate worse than death all the while never letting him escape your mind.” She winked. “You’re the almighty savior, there’s no denying that but, don’t forget that you’re also a woman. You’re allowed to feel, Light. Let yourself.”
“It’s not that simple, Fang.” She replied as she crossed her arms defensively. “It’s just not.”
“Oh, hell. Yes it is! You’re fighting to save Serah, I get that. So is Noel. You’ve saved Sazh from his
darkness by collecting all the blasted fragments needed to put Dajh back together again. You’ve helped me more than you’ll ever know. You saved Snow…” She turned and walked up to Lightning and gently hit her in the arm. “You need to save yourself, too.”
“But...Serah.” She whispered, refusing to make eye contact.
“Serah will survive. You will find her and everything will work out. She’s your sister. Nothing, and no one, can break that bond. Not after all the hell you’ve both been through.” She walked behind Lightning and softly put her hands on her shoulders, nudging her to the platform. “Go to him, Light.”
Hearing Fang’s order caused butterflies to flutter in her stomach as she paid for her ticket to her next stop.
“Fang…before I go, how did you even hear about Snow?” She asked.
“A little birdy told me.” She winked as she, too, paid for her ticket.
Lightning smirked and glanced over at Chocolina, sending a smile her way which made her jump for joy as she watched her friends leave the station.
