Hojo smiled for hours afterward. I watched him work awhile on his keyboard, write for a short time in his notebook, and then settle down with a cup of something hot, smiling all the while.
My bladder drove me out of the bed. I sat up. Hojo instantly appeared in front of me. “Do you require my assistance?” he inquired politely, aiding me to stand.
“Maybe, sir.” I grabbed his waiting hands. I still felt sore and strange, but nowhere near as light-headed or cored out.
“I’ll walk you there, anyway,” he replied.
At a snail’s pace we forded the room. He scooped up a new pad for me off the top of my dresser. “You won’t bleed for much longer,” he said. I blushed and he saw it. “Ah, well enough to think about our last trip to the lavatory,” he murmured. “Don’t be concerned, my dear. Like I expressed before, I am unimpressed by bodily secretions.”
He was the only man I knew that didn’t have an instinctive recoil to blood coming out of a vagina.
“Are you going to leave your glasses off?” I asked.
“I may use them from time to time,” he answered, not batting an eye over the topic change.
“All this amazing stuff you can do and you can’t get perfect vision?” I put my hand on the knob and paused to gather strength.
“I don’t go under the laser or the scalpel unless I do it myself, my dear. I have a lot of enemies. And, it is very hard to operate on oneself.” Hojo pushed the door open for me. “I’ll be waiting,” he told me, guiding me inside and shutting the barrier between us.
I tended to myself quickly, spurred by the knowledge he waited. With great pleasure I threw away the old pad and put in a new one. I wanted to find the horrible person who’d done this to me and beat him to death.
I brushed my teeth and combed my hair, washed off my face and opened the door. Hojo came forward and guided me back toward the bed.
“I don’t understand why Shinra thinks this is an outside job,” I said, thought processes trickling in past my confusion. “If the canister of gas was Shin-Ra make, how did Still get it, or, who got it for him?”
Hojo stopped. Looking down at me, he very slowly smiled. In the semi-dark that smile was as frightening as stimulating. “Your drugs wear off a bit and you begin percolating in that head,” he said approvingly. “Very good, Miss Grey, very good.” He put me in his arms, carrying me out to his office and setting me on his couch.
He left me a moment, coming back from the bedroom with a blanket. Spreading it over me, he tucked it and stepped back to gaze down on me, saying nothing.
“You’re strong,” I told him. “Why are you so strong?”
“Mako, Jenova, and gymnasium nine,” he answered promptly, black eyes borrowing sparks from the wall lamps. “I’m not as strong as a first class soldier; I haven’t bothered to bulk up.”
“Okay.” My head swam for a second. “Why am I in here?’
“Because lying prone won’t drain all the blood. Would you like a drink of water?”
“Oh. Yes, please.”
Hojo poured sparkling water for me. I reached for it, my fingers touching his for a moment. A flicker of something passed through his gaze, a flicker unrelated to the lights.
“Besides,” I said, thinking back to the matter at hand. “The original attacks were upon your pets, specifically; a narrowed attack instead of a widespread one.”
“Oh, very well observed.” Hojo sat beside me, but curled his body to an angle, facing me. “Go on.”
“I don’t think that guy Still and our collars have anything to do with each other,” I said, obeying. “I think Still is dependant on someone else for his orders, but I don’t think he’s got anything to do with the strangulation of your pets or uterus-shredding IUD’s.”
“Excellent.” Hojo put his arm on the back of the sofa and leaned his jaw on his fist. “That’s exactly what I think, Miss Grey.” Eyes drifting over me, he reached over and tapped my glass. “Drink up.”
I heeded him.
“You please me,” he announced once I finished. “Michael is very smart, but even he didn’t follow this line of thought.”
“Too close to the issue. I’m new here.” I felt compelled to downplay my ideas, but I secretly enjoyed Hojo’s praise.
“Perhaps that is a factor,” Hojo admitted, “But, you are analytical by nature. Always asking why…” Smirking, he took my empty glass and set it aside. “Challenging without being belligerent is difficult for most people. You manage it.”
My stomach growled and his smirk became a real smile. “What could you tolerate to eat, do you think?”
“Probably nothing heavy, sir.”
Hojo’s smile broadened. “Oh, back to using that word? So soon?”
Confused, I shook my head. Had I not used his address lately? I couldn’t remember.
“It isn’t important, my dear,” he said softly, his face returning to the same, serene stillness it usually reflected. “I’ll get something for you to eat.” He stood and went to his desk, grabbing his phone.
I drifted a little, listening to the low murmur of his voice. I must have dozed, for suddenly he loomed large in my vision without my noticing his approach. He had a plate in his hand. I looked from his black stare to the big, red strawberries and bowl of white.
“Vanilla yogurt to dip them in,” he said, sitting beside me. He tore the tops off the strawberries one by one with quick efficient twists of his long fingers. “Any objections?”
“No, sir,” I sighed. I felt sleepy again. My head lolled. I felt coldness touch my lips a moment later, then withdraw. I put out my tongue, licking away a burst of cool, vanilla sweetness.
I heard a very small, masculine groan.
“Something tells me I yet again craft a creature of my own doom,” Hojo murmured. “I’m so good at that. My mad scientist résumé is very complete. All I lack is a hunchback, though I could make Baby Shinra fit the bill quickly enough.”
I opened my eyes, struggling to get my head off the couch. “Sir?”
He dipped a berry. “Lean back and relax,” he sighed. “I certainly have no objection to feeding you.”
And so, he did.
I didn’t know how long he fed me; I just kept opening my mouth to receive the cold sweetness, chew the cold sweetness, then swallow the cold sweetness down.
“I suppose,” Hojo said lowly, “hand-feeding a pet isn’t so outside believability.” His voice sounded very odd but I couldn’t exert myself and look at him. “A first for everything,” he went on. “My first blonde, eidetic, curvaceous and quietly rebellious pet, yes, and eating from my hand on my leather couch. Life is fucking brilliant.”
“Brilliant,” I repeated, filing his words away for later, when I could think properly.
“No, Miss Grey, ‘fucking brilliant’.”
“Fucking brilliant, sir,” I said.
Hojo laughed deeply. “Good girl, Miss Grey.”
