After finally reaching my office, I threw down the folder that I was just handed by Tseng. Slowly unfastening the buttons on my jacket, I walked around the desk, pulling out my chair and collapsed ungracefully into it. Fantastic, just what I need…more paperwork.
Taking hold of the work surface, I wheeled myself forward and tucked my legs underneath. Reluctantly reaching for the folder, I opened it out and checked the contents. So, I personally requested these, did I? Let’s see what’s so important.
Emptying the file onto the desktop, out fell several photographs and a colour chart. After scanning them blankly, I found myself groaning in frustration. These mean nothing to me. What am I supposed to do with them?
I leaned across the desk and reached for the phone, dragging it closer towards me. I lifted up the handset and asked to be connected to Tseng’s extension.
“One moment, sir” was all I heard from my secretary as she attempted to link the lines. For a moment there was silence and I began to tap my finger impatiently as I waited for him to answer.
“Mr. President?” Tseng said with slight concern “What can I do for you?”
“Tseng, these photos you’ve just given to me… they make no sense. They’re not labelled. There are no descriptions. What am I supposed to do with them?”
“Isn’t there a chart there, sir? I distinctly remember adding it to the folder before I gave it to you.”
“You mean this…thing with all the colours on it? What the hell is it for? Tseng, its complete nonsense, get up here and explain it to me!” I slammed the phone down angrily. I haven’t got time to waste. I’ve got far more pressing matters to deal with right now, like finding those bastards who blew up my reactor. Isn’t anyone capable of doing anything right in this damn building? And if he starts with that annoying glaring again while he’s up here, I swear, I won’t hesitate to gouge his eyes out with the nib of my pen. I’m seriously NOT in the mood for this right now.
I reclined back in my chair and stared at one of the photos in my hand. I then found myself looking down to the blinking console on my desk. “Yes, enter” I droned, lifting my finger from the intercom and idly checking the time on my watch. Well, I have to credit him. Even I didn’t expect him to get up here quite so quickly.
Emerging from the stairs, in he walked, blatant and bold as ever. Slowly I leaned forwards, watching him stand there like a complete idiot until I gestured for him to sit. I threw the photograph back down to the desk and crossed my arms over my chest.
“Well?” I urged.
He smiled as he brought himself forward, retrieving a chair from the opposite side of the room. After he was seated, he closed the gap between himself and the desk, moving closer to sit beside me. Rotating the photos sideways, he laid them out precisely for us both to view.
“Where would you like me to start?” He asked calmly, ignoring my obvious annoyance.
I sighed and shrugged the heavy white coat from my shoulders, trying not to give off the impression of complete irritation. “The beginning, Tseng, explain what these are for.”
“As you can see, sir, these are various aerial view points of the sectors. Different magnifications, different angles...”
“Please don’t insult my intelligence. I can see that. What I can’t see is what difference that makes. Just get to the point.”
He nodded in response and continued.
“Here, the area has been marked green because-“
I cut him off at this point, raising my hand to silence him “Tseng, why have you brought me this? I have no idea why I would possibly want overhead images of Midgar. I have a lot on my mind at the moment, I can’t be expected to remember every single demand I’ve made in the past.”
“I appreciate that, sir. When you came into power, you requested to know of all of your father’s intended future projects. This particular one he was discussing over with Heidegger.”
“What intended project are we talking about? My father had many of his fat fingers in a number of different pies. The only problem was, he never finished any of them. He just stuck his greasy fingers into more. I haven’t had the time or the energy to review any of his intended ventures so far. More to the point, I don’t like the fact these intended ideas weren’t ran past me in the first place. I was the vice president after all.”
Tseng remained silent, declining to comment. I sighed and continued.
“So, this project my father was discussing with Heidegger. What was is it exactly?”
I said this with only mild interest, because if I was thinking as my father, it was probably a cheap affair to make more money. Which is fine, but I could really do without the extra hassle right now. And if Heidegger was involved, well, maybe it was plans to extend the cafeteria; I wasn’t sure… but Tseng would fill me in soon enough.
“It was for a new training facility for the Turks.” Tseng smiled, pulling the blueprints from the pile of notes and smoothing them out across the desk. I groaned, narrowing my eyes.
“And we need a new one because? What is wrong with the current one we have now?”
“Well, Heidegger feels it is a little…small. With the growing number of applicants it was thought best to expand and have a facility built to mainly focus on the training of new recruits.”
A little small? Well, I suppose to a lard-ass like him. “Fine, continue.” I muttered.
Tseng then discarded some of the photographs, collecting them together and displaying the remaining few that where left. I sighed and tried to remain focused.
“Here, as I was saying, the area is marked green because no creature activity was documented. So, this area remains neutral ground. If we move over a little to the right, the area has been marked yellow because only weak creatures inhabit this area-” He ran his fingers over the corresponding areas as he spoke. God, I hope he finishes soon, my head hurts and I’m vastly losing interest.
“And just north is marked red to document that more hostile creatures roam the area.”
“And the blue area, what does that document?” I said wearily, actually regretting it afterwards because I’d have to listen to more of this mindless dribble.
“That area is uncharted terrain, sir. Not as of yet has it been documented with the threat level or the hostility of the creatures that inhabit it. So, for the time being, it remains unknown.”
I couldn’t hide the boredom or the sarcasm in my voice any longer. “The pretty colours on this chart are all very nice, but what has this got to do with a new training facility?”
Tseng smiled “These photographs are here to help us decide where the best location would be to start construction.”
I began to circle my finger lightly around the relevant area on the picture.
“So, you’re suggesting we build it here, in this green neutral section?”
“Well, we could build it there, sir. Or, maybe it might be more appropriate to build it in this yellow area here instead.” He started tapping the glossy print with his finger, displaying his misgivings to my previous concept. Yes, Tseng, I’m quite aware of where you’re proposing. I’m not blind.
“Ok, so we build it in the yellow area. Explain why it is more appropriate there rather than in the neutral area.”
“Well, you wanted to reduce the creature activity around the sectors. And if the facility was erected here, the new recruits would always have training targets to develop their fighting skills. Over time, this yellow area would be completely wiped out of any creature habitation resulting in the area changing from insecure to neutral, like the region close to the H.Q. Thus, meaning any future development or expansions you wish to make can be made without hassle.”
Absentmindedly scratching my cheek a little at the idea, I nodded with agreement. It’s not a bad suggestion, summing up the long term benefits. “Good work, Tseng. It’s not a bad proposal. But, why you talked the idea through with me rather than your superior is slightly puzzling.”
“The idea was going to be brought forward in the board meeting this morning, sir.”
I ignored him and continued to assess the information before me, shuffling through notes on the desk. I hope he wasn’t implying anything by that last comment. We remained there, sat in silence. When I finally looked up from the documents, I noticed Tseng’s eyes were on me, staring again- unblinking in that icy cold fashion he displayed to me earlier. So I glared back, and spoke through gritted teeth.
“Is there anything else?”
Tseng shook his head. “No, sir.”
“Then why are you still here?” I snapped, intensifying my gaze into his.
“Well, it would be rather rude of me to leave without dismissal… unless there’s something else I can help you with?” He smiled smugly, his eyes still staring blankly into mine.
HE’S SO ARROGANT! I’VE GOT A GOOD MIND TO WIPE THAT SMIRK FROM HIS FACE BY SHOVING THE BARRELS OF MY GUN INTO HIS FUCKING MOUTH! But I managed to keep my composure, for the moment.
“No, there’s not. So you can go back to whatever you were previously doing.”
He lowered his head slightly and rose to his feet, casually placing his chair neatly back as he found it. ARGH, I don’t have to put up with it any longer. I’m in charge here. Why should I have to feel intimidated by this… this pompous prick? I’m putting an end to this ridiculous behaviour right now.
“Actually, Tseng, there was something else.”
He stopped suddenly and raised his eyebrows as he turned to face me. I hate the way he does that - doesn’t say a word but still manages to irritate me. There’s just something about this insolent bastard that makes my blood boil. I took a deep breath and readied myself. I’d been anxiously waiting to say this to him for some time now, so I paused and carefully selected my wording.
“There’s been something that I’ve wanted to say to you for a while, Tseng. It’s about your attitude.”
“My attitude, sir?”
For Gods’ sake, don’t make me repeat myself. Ok, I’m now finding it very hard to control my frustration, but I somehow managed to keep it under wraps and remain professional.
“I’ve noticed, for a while now, that you seem to be having difficulty adjusting to the way I run things. I know my ways are slightly different to my father’s, but if you do have an issue with me personally, Tseng - well, now is your chance to voice it.”
“Forgive me, sir, but I don’t und-”
Tseng was suddenly cut off by the sound of the phone ringing on my desk. I glared to him, motioning him to remain silent while I answered the call. Reaching over for it, I snatched up the hand set and brought it to my ear. “WHAT?” I snarled. I didn’t intend to, but when I’m trying to discipline one of my employees by telling them just how arrogant they are, I’d rather not be interrupted in the middle of it.
“Sir, I don’t mean to alarm you, but we have a slight problem.” My secretary warned, her usual chirpy voice quivering a little as she spoke.
“What kind of problem?” I droned. This day was just getting better and better.
“Could you possibly stay in your office, for the time being…please?”
“Why?” I questioned skeptically, my already tensed posture becoming more ridged in relation to her panicking tone. She suddenly became silent.
“Are you going to tell me what the issue is, or are you just irritating me on purpose?” I snapped, rolling my eyes by her reluctance to answer the question.
When she eventually confessed, I slammed the phone down against the cradle, raising my sights back to Tseng.
“We’re going to have to postpone this discussion. Apparently, there’s an issue with a delivery downstairs. Some imbecile decided to outsource a shipment of new battle blades ready for integration tomorrow. They thought it would save time rather than manufacturing them here. Now, however, instead of blades... I have a whole warehouse full of industrial strength mops!”
I grabbed my jacket from the back of my chair and headed towards the stairs. Just as I was about to exit the office, I turned to Tseng. “This conversation isn’t over. I want you back in here as soon as I resolve this setback.”
He simply lowered his head in response and I couldn’t help but resist the urge to kick the wall as I descended the stairs. Stomping down the corridor towards the elevators, I quickly fastened the top buttons of my coat and prayed that this day didn’t get any worse. I can just see it now; an army of Shin-Ra troops, marching into battle, striking fear into the hearts of our oppressors armed with…heavy duty cleaning utensils. I’ve foreseen the future. I’m going to have an attractive bald patch on my head by my next birthday, from where I’ve been continuously pulling out my hair. No wonder my father was such a hideous state, having to put up with all this shit every day.

That took longer than expected. Whoever that moron was who placed that order is going to be sorry he pissed me off today. Luckily, the manager at the Gold Saucer eagerly offered to take that delivery off our hands. What on earth he’d want several thousand mops for is beyond my understanding, but as long as they’re out of my sight I couldn’t care less what he does with them. I sloped back to my office and resumed my position behind my desk, regaining my comfort once more. Better get this over with, I suppose. I reached for my phone again and asked for Tseng’s extension, massaging my forehead to pass the time. The sound of my now over enthusiastic secretary’s voice greeted my ears, causing me to shudder. Stay calm Rufus, she might be annoying, but she can make a decent cup of coffee - think of the coffee… speaking of which. I tipped my mug slightly to survey the contents, narrowing my eyes at the result. Empty? ...Fabulous.
“Mr. President, he doesn’t appear to be in his office.”
I placed the mug back upright on top of the coaster, mimicking her obvious eager tone. The way I was feeling right now, I couldn’t be bothered to hide the mockery.
“Well, can we find out why he isn’t in his office? I’m supposed to be having a meeting with him.”
There was momentary silence before she came back on the line “He’s not actually in the building, sir”
I started to knead my forehead though frustration; my headache rapidly returning. “Have you called Heidegger to find out why he’s not in the building?”
“Erm, yes, sir…he’s apparently out on an assignment.”
“Do we know when he will be back? WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE HAVING A MEETING!”
“No, Heidegger isn’t sure either, sir. Do you want to leave him a message?”
Just stay calm, think of the coffee…the coffee and the stain her bloody corpse would leave on the carpet. “Fine, just when he gets back, have him report to my office immediately, understood?”
I heard the soft sound of computer keys typing as she repeated my request, “Report- immediately. Got it!”
I slammed the phone down again. I’m actually surprised it hasn’t broken yet with the amount of times I’ve done that today. Looking at my watch, it was only 2:45pm. He can’t be gone for long. Surely he’ll be back way before I‘m due to leave, then I can get this anger out of my system and this rant over with.
***
5:10pm, I’m back on the phone again. “And none of them have reported back yet?”
“Nope.” my secrecy giggled nervously from the other end, her head still vacant of a brain. Fabulous, just fucking fabulous. Well, I can’t be bothered waiting for him. We’ll just have to continue this tomorrow.
“First thing tomorrow, I want him in my office.”
“First thing, got it!”
By slamming the phone down this time, I did actually cause the plastic to split.
