Surely, She Ain’t Serious
Chapter 2
"Look what I’ve got!" Yuffie appeared back on the bridge after a brief reprieve, holding two bottles of champagne above her head. "I’ve got a whole case that I’ve been hiding in my room just for this!"
Tifa, being in the bar business, instantly recognized the brand and was well aware that the bottles in Yuffie’s grip were well over three hundred gil a piece. "Where did you get that?!"
The young ninja’s cheeks instantly turned red. "C…Cornero’s place."
"You stole those? Yuffie, that’s really expensive stuff!" Tifa claimed one of the glossy, black bottles.
"Well, it better be good then. Besides, he’s toast, what in the heck does he care? Hey, we just saved the world, surely a little celebration is in order, right? There’s ten more bottles in my room. That’s enough, isn’t it?" Yuffie’s spirits weren’t going to be diminished.
Cid left the helm and came over, snagging the bottle that Tifa was holding. "Ten’s gonna be more’n enough to get us all shit faced. I usually ain’t one for this fancy crap but if it’s free, what the hell?"
"I’ll go get some cups," Cloud said, not about to deny himself his share of the precious alcohol.
Cid quickly unwrapped the bit of foil from the neck of his champagne bottle and then began to work at the cork, eventually freeing it with a satisfying pop. Deciding that ten bottles was more than enough for everyone to have however much they wanted, he simply brought the bottle up to his lips and downed several swallows of it.
Tifa giggled at him as he did this, being handed a paper cup by Cloud as he got to passing them out. Cid, upon seeing the cup in Tifa’s hand, held is bottle toward her. Tifa held up the cup and nodded, indicating that she wanted some. He filled it to the top, interested in seeing how things were going to turn out once everyone got liquored up.
To Cid’s amusement, Vincent slid up between he and Tifa, holding up a paper cup of his own, cocking an eyebrow as if to ask to have his cup filled, too. The pilot laughed and obliged, surprised that Vincent was willing to participate in this little party. Then again, maybe Vincent just liked a good drink. He seemed to be refined enough to appreciate a thing like fine champagne. Really, though, Cid just wanted to see the gunslinger drunk.
Then, Tifa turned away from the pilot and slipped her arm though the bend of Vincent’s right elbow, strolling away with the gunman. Cid was a little disappointed by this and found himself envying Vincent at that moment, but his train of thought was derailed when Barrett came over to him and started talking.
Vincent led Tifa from the bridge and up to the open deck of the ship. They leaned together against the railing and looked out at the night.
He unbuckled his cloak and then took a sip of his drink. "This is Marianoux, isn’t it?"
Tifa nodded, tasting her own champagne. "You can tell the brand by the taste?"
He drew in a long breath and nodded shallowly. "Once, I was a bit of a connoisseur. Yuffie at least took something worth while."
"Yeah." Tifa sighed and admired him in the moonlight. "It’s really too bad, Vincent."
He quirked an eyebrow at her. "Ah, yes, that again… If I was straight, Tifa, I would. I’ve told you that."
"I know, I can still look, though," she giggled back.
"Yes, you may," Vincent offered her his faint smile before taking another sip. "What, dare I ask, were Cid and you discussing earlier? If I’m not mistaken, I thought I heard my name mentioned…"
"I didn’t say much." Tifa shrugged. "He was just wondering if you were going to vanish once the ship stopped and I told him that I didn’t really know. I did say that I had gotten to know you somewhat."
He noticed how the cool night air was beginning to make her shiver and he took his cup into his metal left hand, before draping his right arm and one side of his cloak around her. "I see."
"Why, are you disappointed that he didn’t say something else?" Tifa nudged him gently in the side.
Vincent shook his head and looked down into her eyes. "Not my type."
"Good to know." Tifa smiled to herself. "No one knows, Vince. They all think that you were in love with Lucrecia."
He laughed quietly to himself. "She was my best friend. I adored her so it wasn’t entirely that difficult to keep up airs, you know."
"You’ve done a good job." She was beginning to feel the heat of the alcohol in her cheeks. "When I was talking to Cid, I think he wondered if there was something between you and me."
"Did you set him, pardon the pun, straight about it?" Vincent asked, his voice amused.
"Yeah." She downed more of her champagne. Cid had certainly given her plenty.
Vincent took a few more sips from his drink and grew pensive. "Do you still intend to go and reopen the bar?"
"I do." She rested her head on his shoulder. They may have just been friends, but there was something wonderful in the unstressed and relaxed physical contact they enjoyed when alone.
"And what of Cloud?" Vincent asked, honestly curious.
"He said he’ll go back to Midgar with me and maybe find some kind of job." Her voice reflected her inner frustration.
"You don’t sound as pleased with that as I would have imagined." Vincent’s crimson eyes narrowed in contemplation.
"Nothing’s ever going to happen between he and I. He spelled that much out." Tifa’s lips pulled down into a frown. "Cloud was all, ‘Tifa, I don’t want you to read more into me accompanying you back to Midgar than just friendship’."
Vincent shook his head and finished his drink. "He is a fool."
"I’ve been chasing him my whole life, it seems. I guess I need to learn that he just isn’t the one for me." She closed her eyes, absorbing the comfort she could take from the man beside her. "Makes me just want to go out and screw some random guy just to prove to myself that I’m not hung up on him."
Vincent actually laughed. "And who would that be?"
"Well, since you’re not on the menu, hm…" Tifa felt herself blush and she took a large swallow of her alcohol.
"I already know the answer." Vincent’s mouth produced a ghost of a smile.
Tifa stepped away from him, amused. "Oh really?"
"You fancy Cid."
She grinned. "Do I?"
"You’ve said so yourself." The faint glow within his eyes momentarily brightened with his amusement. "And he is available."
"Well, we’re not leaving this ship until the morning so maybe I just will." Tifa winked at Vincent, before taking down the rest of her champagne.
"Maybe you just will what?" came a rough voice behind them.
Vincent and Tifa both spun, finding that somehow, Cid had managed to get fairly close without their notice.
The gunslinger admonished himself inwardly, since he’d let his drinking dampen his awareness. He looked over at Tifa. "I think perhaps I should go speak with Nanaki for a while. I shall see you before leaving."
Tifa nodded at him. "Okay. Bye, Vincent."
He offered her a smile and then nodded at the pilot as he walked back below deck.
Cid, still having a half-full bottle dangling at his side came over and leaned against the railing that Vincent had just vacated. "Hope I didn’t ruin some kinda moment there."
Tifa laughed. "Oh, no. Vincent and I aren’t interested in each other like that. No way."
Cid wasn’t sure whether or not to buy that and gave her a sidelong glance. "Right… Is it because of Cloud?"
Tifa shook her head. "No, Cloud and I are just friends, that’s it. That’s all it’ll ever amount to."
Cid turned to face her square on. "So, you’re completely unattached then?"
"Looks like it." Tifa held her cup toward him. "More?"
The pilot instantly acquiesced to her request. Maybe the alcohol would help him find out if Tifa had really been serious earlier on the bridge. He had to keep her drinking. "Well, that makes two of us."
