Cloud stared at the building like it was a
squat gray monster about to devour his soul. Seventh Heaven; he seriously
doubted that “Heaven” was filled with tone-deaf hyperactive psychos. Although
it was truly unfair to think of his friends in such a way; he really just
wanted to be left alone with his thoughts.
A rough nudge from Vincent brought the blonde
back to reality. “The sooner we go in, the sooner we can leave,” the dark one
reasoned.
“Somehow, I doubt that,” Cloud groaned.
“Tifa’s probably expecting us to stay the night.”
“She knows we have plans for the evening,”
Vincent assured, pulling the door open. “Now let’s go,” he added shoving Cloud
through the door.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Vincent calmly tugged Cloud by the shirt to keep the younger man from
bolting.
“H-Hi guys,” he stuttered, a bit
shell-shocked.
“Cloud, I’ve been worrying about you all
morning! I called and called, and YOU,” she growled pointing to Vincent, “shut
off the phone!”
“I think six calls in half an hour are more
than enough.” Vincent shrugged. A lesser man would have run for cover, but
there was an embarrassed half-scowl on Tifa’s face. She simply let out an
annoyed huff before snagging Cloud’s arm and hauling him towards a group of
tables that had been haphazardly shoved together to make a surface large enough
to seat everyone.
“Vincent!” The man jumped a bit before a
shrieking blur attached itself to his waist.
“Munchkin,” he grumbled giving Marlene a
nervous pat on the head.
“My name’s Marlene!” She huffed pulling away
from Vincent.
“I know.”
Marlene smiled grabbing the man’s arm. “Then
why do you call me that?” Vincent shrugged with a sigh and allowed the
energetic demon child to lead him towards their group of friends.
“Alright people, now that the birthday boy is
FINALLY here,” Tifa called over the conversations, “have a seat so I can serve
up some food! Let me remind you I closed my bar for you all.”
“Please, you closed it for the short shit!”
Cid grunted receiving an instant, “Watch your language!”
“We know you’d close the bar for any of us,”
Barret added.
Tifa stuck out her tongue before wandering to
the kitchens to bring out “lunch,” although it was more like a Sunday dinner in
size.
“Where’s Denzel?” Cloud asked.
“He’s at a friend’s,” Tifa replied setting
more plates on the table.
“He says he’s too cool to be spending the day
around boring adult’s. I think he has a girlfriend.” Marlene stated with a tint
of jealousy in her tone. “Boys are so stupid.”
“I’m sorry about the eating arrangement
Nanaki” Tifa apologized setting a plate in front of the wolf-cat.
“It’s alright, Tifa. This is more convenient
anyway,” he assured her.
Once everybody had been served, well everyone
but Cait Sith, some unknown deity decided it would only be proper for a
conversation to take place.
“So where were you two this morning?” Yuffie
asked, “It sure took you guys a while to get here.”
“The church,” Cloud stated.
“You did THAT in a church?” Yuffie yelped.
Everyone stared at the girl in shock. Cloud
dropped his fork which smacked Nanaki in the head, while Vincent choked on his
tea. “NO!” They yelled in unison.
“Well, what was I supposed to think?” Yuffie
demanded in a desperate attempt to defend herself. “We
all know about you two, and you were more than just a
little late.”
“I was talking to Aerith!” Cloud shrieked.
Yuffie’s face colored a shamed pink hue.
“What did she have to say?” Cid asked in a
surprisingly civil tone that he seemed to reserve only for discussing the Cetra
girl.
“Nothing much,” Cloud replied, grateful for
the man’s intervention. “She just wished me a happy birthday and all.”
“It takes that long to say happy birthday?”
Cait Sith inquired.
“Why does it matter?”
“You’re hiding something! That’s what
matters,” Tifa added. “You were there Vincent. What really happened?” She
pleaded to the older man.
Vincent simply shrugged. “The church is their
place, not mine. I simply wait outside.”
Nanaki cleared his throat, which sounded
disturbingly like he was ridding himself of a hairball. “Since Cloud doesn’t
seem to want to tell us until he is ready, I suggest we finish our meal and
move on to gifts and cake.”
“You just have a sweet tooth,” Marlene
giggled.
“Alright,” Tifa conceded and began collecting
everyone’s dishes. She turned down any offers of help saying she was the
hostess and they were her guests. Vincent figured she was merely looking for a
distraction from the previous conversation. He didn’t worry himself with
Cloud’s behavior. Secrets are kept for a reason, and Cloud would tell him when
he was ready.
The traditional singing and cake went by
quickly, but not quickly enough. Vincent opted to remain silent while everyone
else sang as loudly as they could. Opening of presents however took much
longer.
“This is great Nanaki! Thank you.” Cloud said
with a smile as he admired a necklace made of several differently colored rocks
and feathers. “I’m sorry about the fork thing earlier.” He added with a blush, scratching
behind the wolf-cat’s ears.
“It’s alright.”
Cloud admired his loot. The necklace from
Nanaki, some materia from Yuffie, a cookbook from Marlene and Barret
(apparently Cid’s comments that he could burn water got through to someone), a
lighter with wolves carved into it from Cid, a book on palmistry from Cait
Sith, and from Tifa, a photo album with a few pictures she managed to get their
friends to hold still for. “One more to go.”
“Actually two more, but the second one is for
later.” He whispered, handing cloud a large red box.
Cloud blushed, but proceeded to open his
present. Pulling off the lid he peered inside. “Wow...” he gasped.
“Don’t worry, it’s not loaded.” Vincent
stated.
Cloud slowly and almost reverently pulled it
from the case. It was a pistol, and rather light but sturdy. Cloud placed it in
his hand getting a feel for it. Well balanced and obviously crafted for him by
the way it fit his hand. On the grip there was an unusual carving. It took
Cloud a moment to recognize it was a Cerberus, but upon closer inspection he
realized that instead of being the three-headed dog, it was instead a
three-headed wolf.
“I call it, Savior,” Vincent declared.
“It’s amazing” Cloud whispered.
“It sure is! Mind if I see?” Barret asked
enthusiastically.
Cloud looked up at Vincent who merely
shrugged. “Fine, but if you damage it in any way I’ll hack you all into little
pieces.”
“Deal!” Cid exclaimed, taking the gun first to admire it.
“Keep it away from everyone!” Tifa stressed.
“It’s not even loaded,” Barret claimed.
“I don’t care!”
Cloud chuckled at the verbal crossfire
between Tifa and the two men, who eventually conceded and stood away from
everyone else.
“Maybe I should’ve loaded it, and they could
‘accidentally’ shoot themselves in the head.” Vincent grumbled.
“It’s a wonderful gift, Vincent,” Cloud
murmured, taking his lover’s hand in his own. “Thank you.”
“You deserve far more, but I’m glad you like
it.” He leaned forward to kiss the blonde but was stopped short by a tug on his
cape.
“Tifa says to take the gun away ‘cause the
men won’t listen,” Marlene mumbled before scurrying away from the now annoyed
Vincent.
Cloud sighed and stood up walking over
towards Tifa, Cid and Barret.
“Give me that,” he grunted.
“But you said we could look at it!” Cid cried
indignantly.
“You’ve seen it, now give it back before Tifa
has a conniption,” he continued. Cid reluctantly placed Savior in Cloud’s hand,
before he stormed off.
Tifa grabbed Cloud’s free hand and pulled him
away. “I figure now is as good a time as any for you two to leave,” Tifa said
with a smile. “Besides, Vincent still has something else to give you, and that
was not meant to sound so perverted!”
“Whatever, Tifa,” Cloud chuckled. “Thanks for
the party,” he added with sincerity.
“You deserve it.”
At this point Vincent had already packed up
most of the gifts, and Cloud placed Savior back in its case before giving Tifa
a brief hug. “Thanks again.”
While Cloud said his goodbyes to everyone,
Vincent began taking the presents outside to find a place for them in Fenrir,
without too much difficulty. Their friends had obviously thought of the bike’s
lack of “trunk space” when selecting gifts. He slipped on the necklace Nanaki
had given Cloud and arranged it under his cloak so it wouldn’t be ruined on the
ride home. Cloud stepped out the door with one last wave before looking to
Vincent.
“We can go now,” Cloud sighed swinging his
leg over Fenrir, and starting the engine. Vincent waited patiently for Cloud to
get adjusted before climbing on as well.
Tifa watched from the window with a smile on
her face as they left. Cloud hadn’t done too bad for
himself. Even if she wasn’t the one that made him happy, she could be content
in the fact that he found someone who did.

Not that any of you care
or are still reading but a quick note about the ending scene. I read a fic that
had someone on the bike already before Cloud got on, but Cloud was driving.
That just doesn’t work too well. If someone’s already on, you either have to
kick them in the head when you get on, or do some weird contortions.
