Morning came slowly, the temperature rising in the room by degrees. I laid there in silence, savoring the calm. His hand across my chest kept me grounded, otherwise I would have been content to drift off to sleep forever.
He was awake. I could hear his heartbeat, strong and even, beating within his breast. Our eyes met and he instantly looked away as if he had been burned. His arm moved off of my chest and to his side. I smiled. He didn’t like to be caught showing affection.
“Do you think we’ll get lucky today?” I asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
He shook his head while staring at the ceiling. “I don’t think so. It might be better to give up for a while and come back later, let it think it’s safe.” I noticed that his hand had bled a little from where he had bitten it. He noticed me looking at it and put it under the covers like it was nothing.
We got up, dressed, and proceeded through our routines for the rest of the day while ignoring each other. If the others noticed they didn’t say anything. We were able to find the mark and kill it with some difficulty. The money we received would come in handy upgrading our weapons. And still Balthier and I did not speak to each other. Twice I caught him staring at me, but he soon looked away.
Finally, when we had stopped to camp for the night I pulled him away from the others and forced him to look at me. “Why are you avoiding me? If I have done something wrong, I apologize. I didn’t mean to.” I assumed I had, yet again, broken some Hume taboo and embarrassed myself.
His right hand picked at the scab on his left and he still wouldn’t meet my eyes. “You haven’t done anything, you don’t need to apologize.”
“Then what’s wrong?”
That made him look at me, if only for a second. “I just don’t want to get too comfortable. The last time I felt like that it all collapsed around me.”
“This is about your father?”
He laughed. “My father, my life, everything can change in an instant. It feels like everything is coming to a head. I don’t want you to get hurt because of it Fran.” Green eyes met mine and held them. “I care too much about you.”
I smiled slightly and stepped closer. “You of all people should know we are almost one and the same. We have both left who we were before to become someone else. If I left you, I would have nowhere else to go.” I pulled him to my chest and held him gently. There was no reaction, but he didn’t pull away either.
“Thank you Fran.” he whispered into my breast.
We traveled on to the land of the Garif, a lush veldt that stretched out for miles. The wind running through the grass and sound of water made a welcome change from the heat of the days before. Vaan, Penelo, and Larsa ran on ahead, chattering among themselves, while Basch and Ashe trailed behind. Balthier walked slowly beside me, asking me what I knew of the Garif and their ways. It wasn’t much, to be sure, I had only met one of their kind in the Wood and he was nice enough, if a bit cryptic. Balthier had never seen one, he’d only heard of them in stories and even those were inaccurate.
We must have been taking too long because Vaan and Penelo came running back and dragged us towards the village and its mysterious people.
The warchief graciously welcomed us and bade us stay the night in the guest tent. Regretfully, we would all have to stay in the same tent so there would be little privacy. Ashe looked disgusted at the whole prospect, both sleeping on the earth and with people she didn’t know. I suspected much of her time in exile had been spent in relative comfort, she had a bed to sleep in each night and plenty of food on her table. When I had left the Wood I had little to my own name apart from my armor and my bow, and nothing in the way of money. Viera didn’t need these things. I learned to adapt to new situations. I hoped she would be able to as well.
The Garif led us to a relatively small tent near the outskirts of the camp. On opening the flaps to go inside I was assailed by the scent of burnt incense and rotting meat. A small fire was sending up clouds of smoke that made it almost impossible to breathe. Skinned carcasses hung in the rafters coated with a mixture of salt and other spices. They were turning black with age. Handwoven blankets in earth tones lay neatly folded near one of the beams of the tent. They had picked up some of the smell of their surroundings and were rough to the touch.
I realized now why most of the Garif we had met were sleeping outside.
That night we all sat around the elders’ fire and enjoyed the feast they had prepared for us. It seemed as if everyone was having a good time, but I wondered how much of it was just everyone pretending so that they didn’t have to be the first to head back to the tent.
After dinner most of the others were tired from the day’s walking and retired early. I couldn’t stomach going to the tent just yet and so made my way towards the stream that ran far enough away from the camp that it was barely visible. It widened quite a bit at one point and seemed to create a small pond. Small growths of cattails dotted the shore and were accompanied by long grasses that swayed in the wind. It all seemed so natural and perfect. The breeze made my skin tingle and all of my hair stand on end.
My boots came off easily and I tossed them to the shore. The water was surprisingly cold as it washed over my feet. I could see little tadpoles swimming around my toes. After letting myself adjust to the change in temperature, I waded in a little deeper. My body warmed up rather quickly. Next I took my gloves off and then let my hands trails in the water. Stress seemed to melt away and my muscles loosened. I undid the clasps and ties that held my armor together and tossed that to join the rest on the banks.
Naked, I slipped further into the water, letting it come up to my shoulders. Water enveloped me, touching every pore. My ears welcomed the water as I submersed myself. It was only in water that I could escape the constant little noises that seemed to surround me daily. When I came back up for air and pulled the hair out of my eyes, I saw Balthier sitting on the bank watching me.
“You couldn’t sleep?” I asked.
“Not with Ashe’s snoring.” He stood, brushing off his pants. “I thought I’d see what you were doing.”
“Well, you’re here. Come and join me.”
He shook his head. “I’m not that good in the water.”
“It’s not deep. You don’t have to come in that far.”
He sighed and kicked off his shoes before stepping into the water, wading out a foot or so from the shore. I watched as he took off his shirt slowly and came nearer. The dirt at the bottom of the pond molded to my feet with each step as I walked up in front of him. His jaw dropped lower and lower the closer I got. When I finally was close enough to touch he looked as if someone had punched him in the stomach.
“Is something wrong?” I asked. His hand was trembling when I held it.
“You’re beautiful.” He stepped forward, closing the gap between us. We kissed gently. My skin tingled as he moved his hands down my back. I traced my fingers down his chest and we both shuddered.
“Thank you.” I whispered into his lips. I ran my hand down his chest and caught my finger on the top of his pants. He covered my hand with his and helped me pull his pants down and throw them to join his other clothes.
We kissed again, tongues snarling together, hands trailing over each other’s bodies. It was getting difficult to breathe, our breaths were harsh pants snatched in between kisses. I felt him growing hard between us and I was getting wet. He nuzzled into my neck and I rolled my head back in ecstasy. His hands slid around to the front of my chest and traced circles around my nipples, making them grow hard with blood. I moaned.
“So you do like this.” he panted in between kisses.
“I never said I didn’t.” His right hand slipped down my chest and towards parts below. I jumped as his finger found the one place that was demanding my attention. My grip on him tightened as he touched it gently, each stroke a little spark that shot through my body. I didn’t recognize that the soft moaning noises I heard were coming from me until he covered my lips with his own and they were drowned out by our need.
My left hand stayed on his back to steady me, and I let my right move forward and grasp his cock. It twitched in my fingers and his eyes rolled back in his head. “Fran...” he whispered.
Though I could have stayed there like that forever, each of us caressing the other, I need him to take the next step, I wanted him inside me, I wanted to feel my senses explode. He whined as I pulled away from him, my hand twined with his, pulling him to the bank. I laid down in the wet grass, pulling him on top of me.
The feeling was almost too much for my system, the grass tickling my back, his cock against me, his kisses on my neck and throat, his back arching as my hands trailed over his flesh. He stopped kissing me for a moment and look down at me. His usually neatly combed hair was unruly now and stuck up all over the place. Lips that were normally very controlled were pouted and swollen with lust. A few bruises graced his neck from where I had sucked earlier. I am sure my body looked much the same. I met his eyes, which were pleading to let him go further. He winced as I tugged on his earring and pulled him down for another hungry kiss, at the same time spreading my legs. It took a moment to get ourselves arranged properly, which wasn’t helped by the fact that I continued to drag him down for sloppy half kisses. Finally he moved forward and he was in me and I couldn’t contain myself, I screamed. My claws dug into his back, tearing rents in his flesh. He grunted but didn’t stop. I hooked my legs behind him, pulling him into me, my body climbing towards releases. He obliged, pushing himself into me with slow steady strokes, each one bringing us closer to the edge. Our tongues burned together, our bodies were flame and they consumed us.
He sped up his pace, bracing his hands on the ground, his eyes closed in concentration and his teeth clenched. I matched him thrust for thrust, our moans joining the sounds of the night. My body sang and I was so close to exploding. The pressure continued to rise and I contracted my inner muscles when I thought I had reached my limit. That was all we needed. He came inside me, the warmth of his seed coating my insides. I shrieked in ecstasy as my release came as well, my fingers digging into his back once more. It was a struggle to catch my breath. Balthier looked down at me and smiled painfully, then captured my lips in a last kiss. I shuddered as he pulled out of me and was instantly chilled to the bone.
He waded in the water and sat down, splashing it over his body. Blood trickled down his back from the fierce looking rents I had accidentally given him. He didn’t complain. I sat next to him, cleaning myself off gently. The sun was beginning to set, the days were longer on the plains. The tents cast long shadows across the grass. A cool breeze brought relief, but it reminded me that eventually I was going to have to return to the stifling heat of the tent. I finished washing and stood up to walk back to my clothes. He touched my leg briefly and almost looked embarrassed.
“I...brought blankets out here. I know you don’t like close quarters.” he said, refusing to meet my eyes.
“Thank you. Are you staying as well?” Sometimes it seemed like he wanted to be apart from me and off with the Humes. Others he would cling to me as if I was his anchor in the storm.
“If you’ll let me.”
“Of course, come on.” I touched his shoulder fondly. The blankets were in a small area surrounded by grass, definitely not visible from the guest, or any, tent. I wondered how much of our assignation he had planned beforehand.
I spread the blankets out on the ground and then curled underneath one of them. He slipped in beside me, shivering as the temperature dropped and it turned into night. I embraced him, sharing my body heat.
“Fran, I love you.” he whispered into my neck. His grip around me tightened. My body tensed, I was unused to any expressions of regard from him. We usually left them unspoken. His breath on my chest suddenly stopped, he was waiting for a response.
I gave in, hoping it wouldn’t lead to any regrets later. “I love you too.” We fell into an uneasy sleep.
