Epilogue
Zell woke up with a startle, some odd sound waking him, and found himself staring into an unfamiliar asparagus-green wall. He kept as still as he could, as his sleep-fogged mind caught up.
Right, Christmas morning - in Esthar - with Squall.
He rolled over, searching the room and found the brunet standing by the window in only a fluffy white towel. He had sullen look on his face, staring outside at something catching his eye, his arms crossed over his bare chest. There was a foot long scar curved over his hip, a morbid reminder of a near miss during the Sorceress War.
Zell smiled tiredly at Squall’s back, just admiring for a second, appreciating the moment he had to observe the gunblader in this surroundings with all his shields down.
“Hey, buddy.”
Squall turned his head to look at him, smiling faintly.
“Never heard you call me that before.”
With a grin, Zell rose up to rest on his forearms. “I was talking to the stuffed toy. I thought you said Laguna stole him?”
“He did.” Squall turned to look at said toy on the dresser. “He returns it every time I come to visit.” He resumed his staring out the window, giving a little sigh. “It snowed tonight. It’s all white outside.”
Mindless of being naked, Zell rolled out of the bed and joined the brunet by the window. “Cool! Snowball fight later?”
“Yeah…”
The non-committal response made Zell tear himself away from the beautiful whiteness outside, to find Squall looking at him appraisingly.
“Not to your satisfaction?” He had to ask, because lately, all Squall looked at him like had been with lust, or mild annoyance.
His Commander chuckled and untangled his arms to reach out and trace a finger down Zell’s side.
“You know it is”, he said, dusky eyes leering suggestively, letting his entire hand cover Zell’s hip, his thumb rubbing soft circles into his skin. “But I was looking at your scars, not even Garden’s combined supplies of magic could get rid of them.”
“Yeah, I know. But I think they’re pretty cool. Kinda like abstract, white tattoos. Only, we can’t choose the pattern.” He looked up from where Squall’s hand was caressing him. “Wouldn’t trade them for anything.”
He ran a finger down Squall’s diagonal scar, continuing down until his digit caught on soft bottom lip, feeling it pull under as Squall smiled.
“Maybe not all of them.”
Zell leaned forward to kiss him then, fingers pulling on soft, moist hair. “You took a shower without me?”
With his eyes closed, Squall dug his fingernails into the skin just above Zell’s buttcheeks, rubbing his chin against the blond’s like a cat. “Didn’t want to wake you. Got kinda late last night.”
“Yeah”, Zell chuckled at the memory. “Sure did.”
They had spent the better part of Christmas Eve making out, though, and it seemed like they were going on an endless supply of the need to kiss, but far be it beyond Zell to object. He pulled Squall in again, licking against his tongue and while one hand tangled in chocolate-hair, the other slid against the smooth expanse of Squall’s back.
“Hey, I got a present for you.”
He bounced over to his bag, and grinned as he heard Squall whine in frustration. “Come on! It’s Christmas morning, this is what you’re supposed to do.”
Squall shuffled over to the bed and sat down with a soft thud, pouting adorably. “Could you at least put some clothes on? You’re distracting me.”
Zell smiled as he rummaged around needlessly in the bag, shifting purposely to give Squall a better view. He was proud if his body and secretly enjoyed people’s envious stares, but that didn’t mean he flaunted it every chance he got. He wasn’t like Seifer. However, he had no qualms about parading around stark naked behind the privacy of closed doors.
“Naw, you’ll just rip them off me in a minute or so, why bother? Here.”
He held out the square package his Ma had carefully helped him wrap, suddenly nervous. It wasn’t the first time he’d given gifts to Squall, but this was the first time he’d given the brunet something that was from him alone.
“My Ma suggested I’d make it. For the both of us, you know.”
He sat down next to Squall, who tentatively accepted the gift and squeezed it gently. He may never admit it, but Zell knew Squall secretly loved gifts, and they didn’t necessarily have to be for him.
“Go on. Open it!”

At Zell’s insistence, Squall began the unwrapping process, trying not to pull to eagerly at the tape. He soon revealed a black leather-bound book, unmarked and untitled and he gave Zell a questioning look before he flipped it open, landing somewhere in the middle.
The photos where from the SeeD ball, one of Zell and Irvine, raising champagne-glasses at the camera, and on the opposite side, one of him and Rinoa, both looking amused - she more than him, obviously - at something just to the side of the photographer.
He flipped forward to find more photos; missions, parties, vacations, snap-shots of random things, but all relating to Garden, and to them.
“It’s chronological”, Zell explained. “So most of the ones in the beginning are of me as kid. I didn’t have any of you. Only one of all of us that I found at Matron’s place before she died. I don’t know if she had any more.”
Zell tapped his fingers against his naked thigh, a nervous habit Squall had quickly learned, not a restless one.
“I don’t know why I thought you’d want it, but I know I don’t like forgetting stuff, so… I’ve taken a few, most I stole from Selphie, but Ma took the old ones. And uh…Yeah.”
Squall kept turning the pages; the more recent events clearer in his mind, until he suddenly came across empty ones.
“I thought we could put some from last night in, I saw Kiros go a little crazy with the camera. Or you know, for other stuff we do. It’ll be like our diaries, only with pictures.”
Zell was nibbling on his lip, foot bouncing against the floor, looking more than a little adorable.
“Yeah”, Squall said, ransacking his mind for something meaningful and appreciative to say. When that failed, he settled for a heartfelt; “This is great, Zell. Thank you.”
The grin that spread across his boyfriends face was blinding, and Squall didn’t resist the urge to kiss him. He figured if he were allowed to do that for….a very long time, he’d die a happy man. Zell’s response was just as enthusiastic as he’d expected, and he suddenly found himself hovering above the blond, trying to evade soft, wet kisses.
“Wait, don’t you wanna see what I got for you?”
The surprise on Zell’s face was genuine. “You got me a gift?”
The fact that Zell hadn’t thought Squall would give him anything, was rather offensive. Just because he thought wrapping gifts was a waste of time (seriously, how many noticed the wrapping paper? Although, the gold and silver paper around Zell’s gift had been very cool) didn’t mean he didn’t get people gifts.
He nearly stomped over to the dresser, retying the towel and pulled out the top drawer, suddenly nervous.
He needed to take a minute to remind himself that what he was about to do, was something he really wanted. Because it was.
“I don’t know”, he began honestly and turned to Zell who saw up, blond hair a mess. “This is… Hyne, I don’t know what it is! I just want you to have it.”
He tossed the gift in Zell’s -thankfully- covered lap, swallowing thickly as he beamed up at him, already ripping the paper.
Inside was an envelope, the SeeD-logo in the upper left corner, a large silver snowflake sticker covering the space where the address had once been.
Zell made a rude sound and looked up. “It better not be mission orders”, he said as he slid a finger under the flap. “If it is, I’m a officially labelling it as the worst gift in the history of Christmas gifts.”
Squall’s heart was pounding so hard he couldn’t even muster the tiniest hint of a smile, not even as Zell glanced at him questioningly.
“Hyne, it is missions orders, isn’t it? Squall!”
“No”, he said, frustrated with how panicked he sounded, but now when they were almost there, he wanted it over with. “It’s not.”
Zell eyed him suspiciously as he proceeded to rip the envelope open all the way. He took out the folded papers, still frowning as he began to read.
Squall almost bounced on his heels as Zell scanned the first page, reached the bottom, only to start over again.
“Squall?” he asked, eyes darting erratically across the lines, finally turning to the second page, and the square bit of plastic attached to it.
Squall could see the moment realization hit the fighter, the physical flinch and the flicker of emotions in his face when he looked up, a mix of doubt and cautions happiness.
“Is this what I think it is?”
“I had that made a few years ago, just in case. I’ve never had to use it.”
He took a deep breath before he continued. “I want you to have that, and with it giving you unlimited access to my room. And no, you don’t have to ask first.”
Zell was off the bed and around his neck faster than lightning, the cold key-card pressing into his back.
Squall wrapped his arms around Zell’s waist, feeling both elevated for the apparent success of his gift, and stupid, for standing practically naked and hugging. He made a mental note to remember dressing before offering any more important gifts.
He nuzzled into Zell neck, breathing in the scent of his boyfriend.
“Still the worst gift in the history of Christmas gifts?”
“Shut up for a second, Squall.”
Zell’s voice was oddly strangled, and Squall slowly released his hold and pulled away an inch or so. His lover’s face was scrunched up and his blue eyes glittering.
“No”, he croaked when he saw Squall inquiring look. “I’m not crying.”
Squall chuckled, running both hands through Zell’s hair, resting their foreheads together.
“This is…” Zell’s voice was stronger now. “This is really big.”
“Tell me about it. I had like a hundred doubts last night, and probably even before that. But I know I can trust you with that card, no matter what.”
“You mean I won’t give it to Selphie.”
“Well, yes.”
Turning the key-card over in his hands, Zell made the hologram on the top glimmer in the sunlight from outside.
“So, does this mean I can sneak in after curfew?”
“Curfew’s only for the students, Zell. But yeah, anytime you want. Come and go exactly as you please.”
Zell looked up with a mischievous grin.
“Pun intended?”
Squall outright laughed at that, planting a big kiss on Zell. “Definitely.”
The blond glanced between him and the key-card a couple of times more, before he leant down to put it in his bag, next to his own.
“I had plans of lazy morning sex”, he said as he straightened, running his index finger against the edge of the towel. “But I’m to giddy for that now. How about that snowball fight instead?”
Squall sighed. “I knew I should have waited to give you that.”
He kissed Zell again, softer and slower this time, his hands framing that tanned face.
“We might as well”, he said, as he pulled away and threw a glance out the window. “Since Laguna beat us to it.”
They both looked down at Laguna waving merrily as he saw them, standing in knee-deep snow with spots of white on the black sweater he wore, no doubt hits from where Kiros or Ward had hit him.
A loud smack made the window rattle, snow-slush skating down the glass and Ward running past, cackling like mad.
Zell grinned wickedly.
“Me and Ward against you and Laguna.”
“Fine.” Squall caught Zell’s arm. “But dress first.”
I just set it up perfectly for the sequel! YAY! But I’m not there yet, so I should tone it down a little. Yeah, this is it, for this time. I thought the first part wasn’t complete without them exchanging gifts, but I couldn’t get it in there after I thought of it, so here it is!
