Chapter 2: Making a Dream come True
Tifa paced
her bedroom, she was dressed in a pair of loose black joggers and a black sport
top and her hair was pulled back in a low pony tail, tied at the nape of her
neck. She stopped in her tracks before doing some stretches so she could go out
for her run.
Running was
needed to keep herself fit and agile, especially with her martial arts class
that she had been taking since Cloud had left for SOLDIERs. Her red wine eyes
flickered over to the dressing table where there was a picture of Cloud at the
age of 14 sitting under a tree eating an apple. He was unaware that the picture
had been taken before Tifa shook her mind clear of the memories.
Tifa made
her way out of her room and down the stairs where she could hear her father in
his study as he typed up on his computer.
“I’m going
for my run,” Tifa called to her father.
“Okay
sweetheart, don’t stay out too long,” Mr. Lockhart shouted back from his study
just before the front door closed, announcing that his daughter had left the
house. He shook his head with an amused grin as he turned back to his computer,
flicking through his notes as he did.
Zack stood
up from his bed, stretching his arms over his head as he did before he looked
at Cloud, who was looking out of the window.
“Come on,
you need some fresh air,” Zack told Cloud as he hauled Cloud up and both of
them made their way out of the room, the inn and out into the cool dark night.
Zack tilted his head only to be startled by the stars in the sky.
“Oh…wow! That’s
a lot of stars!” Zack exclaimed. Cloud grinned as he also tilted his head back
to look at the stars shining in the night sky…it reminded him of that night so
long ago…a night that he had made a promise that he had every intention of
keeping.
“We’re lucky,”
Cloud started, Zack looked at him. “Pollution isn’t as heavy over here so we
get clear skies – the kids like it because we tend to have parties at night and
some of the elders tell us stories of the stars.” Zack grinned.
“It sounds
like a fun town,” Zack told him. Cloud gave a short nod, not really agreeing or
disagreeing with the older man. “Alright, you are not telling me the whole
story.” Cloud looked at him, shocked at first before he sighed.
“Some of the
kids here weren’t really friendly with me – they preferred to pick on me
because I was the silent loner type and because of Tifa. Tifa was friendly with
me, she didn’t approve of them picking on me and one of the boys had a crush on
her and didn’t like that she was always trying to hang around with me,” Cloud
explained. “One time, after Tifa’s mother died. Tifa wanted to go to the
mountains and she set off, the rest of the guys chickened out and went back
down to town but I carried on after only to watch as she fell down and I fell
down with her. After that, her father was angry and I took the blame of the
idea of going up into the mountains – after that, the adults started isolating
me because they feel I was a bad influence.”
“Does Tifa
know?” Zack asked and Cloud shook his head.
“No, she
tried to tell her father that it was her idea but her father shushed her and
told her that he was just glad that she was safe and in one piece – he never
said anything about it being my fault and I never told her,” Cloud admitted.
Zack ran a hand through his hair.
“Man, you
really do quite a lot for this girl, shouldn’t you just at least let her know
that you are here – after everything she did, it sounds like she likes you a
lot,” Zack told him but Cloud shook his head. He was about to say something
when he heard footsteps.
Cloud pulled
on his mask just in time for a girl to come rounding the corner, startling
Zack.
“Whoa!” Zack
held up his hands only to arch an eyebrow when he saw Tifa bent over, her hands
on her thighs, breathing heavily before she smirked at him.
“Impressive,
I managed to startle a 1st Class SOLDIER, whatever would your
director say?” Tifa teased, earning a mock glare from the older man and gentle
laugher from the younger girl.
“You’re a
guide, you jog and you can defend yourself, is there anything you can’t do?”
Zack asked. Tifa just smirked as she straightened up.
“I can’t
grow a dick,” she winked at the infantryman before she picked up her pace once
more, moving past Zack and Cloud, leaving the men in stunned silence before
Cloud started laughing.
“Man, she
sure is a spitfire when she wants to be,” Zack muttered under his breath,
seeing what had drew Cloud to Tifa in the first place. She could be so sweet
and innocent one moment before turning around and showing you a wild, daring
part of her.
“Tell me
about it,” Cloud muttered between laughers. Zack pinned him with a mock glare
before shaking his head as an amused smile crossed his face and he clapped a
hand on Cloud’s shoulder, happy to see that he was laughing.
“Come on,
let’s head back to the inn, we gonna need the sleep,” Zack told him and Cloud
nodded as they turned around and started their way back to the inn for a well
needed sleep.
The next
afternoon found Tifa making her way through the town dressed in her usual brown
mini-skirt, a white top and a red vest with her cowboy hat and boots. She
looked around only to see the infantryman standing next to the water tower and
felt a tender smile cross her face as he tried to pretend that his ribs weren’t
hurting him. Shaking her head, she walked over to him and suppressed a smile
when she saw him straighten up.
“Ma’am,” he
greeted. Tifa gave a short nod back.
“Can you
walk with me?” Tifa asked. He tilted his head slightly, confused. Tifa bit her
inner cheek at how much the action reminded her of him. “I have something I
want to say.” He nodded.
“Sure,” they
walked over to the stairs that led up the higher level of Nibelheim till they
reached a building that hid them from view.
“Listen, I
just wanted to say thank you for trying to protect me,” Tifa told him. Cloud
just gave a short nod.
“Just doing
my job ma’am,” Cloud told her. One side of Tifa’s lips curved up into a smile
at his politeness before it dropped and she looked off to the side with a sad
smile. “Is there anything wrong?” Tifa looked up at him, despite the fact that
he was wearing the Shin-Ra mask; she still felt the sense of familiarity.
“Ma’am?” Tifa broke out of her thoughts.
“Oh sorry,
it’s just…you just remind of someone I used to know a long time ago,” Tifa told
him. Cloud felt his hands sweat as he fought to keep a cool composer.
“Oh,” was
all Cloud could say before he mentally scolded himself for saying just a lame
thing. Tifa smiled tenderly.
“Yeah, he
was always protective and so sweet,” Tifa told him. She got a nod from the
young man and she could see his jaw tick, from anger or nervousness, she
couldn’t tell before an idea dawned on her…maybe there was a way to tell if it
was him. “You see…I think you might be the guy I’m thinking about.”
“What?”
Cloud asked, panic taking a hold of him, she couldn’t find out it was him, he
couldn’t risk seeing the disappointment on her face…not after all the bragging
he had done before he left for SOLDIERs, if there was one thing he ever wanted,
it was for Tifa to be proud of him.
“I just want
to know…” Tifa bit her bottom lip as she looked up at his face, “If you are the
boy who I hope you are.” Cloud was taken back at her confession. He opened his
mouth to say something when her hands reached up and cupped his cheeks before
she leaned in and brushed her lips against his.
Cloud felt
his eyes close involuntarily as he stood still, stunned and unsure over what
was happening when he felt himself softening and getting ready to return the
kiss when she pulled away from him, startling him once more.
“I want to
apologise in advance for calling out his name if you are not him,” Tifa leaned
back and kissed him again. Cloud knew that he should resist, that it wasn’t
fair of him to play her along like this but he had always had a crush on Tifa
for a long time and to have her lips on his…it was like being in heaven and
hell all at the same time.
He slid his
gloved hands over her bare hips before allowing them to slide up her back,
pressing her body against his. Tifa let out a soft moan as her lips parted due
to Cloud’s probing tongue. It has to be him; he was the only one that could
elicit this emotion in her.
“Tifa,”
Cloud whispered out between kisses and she clutched his navy top.
“Cloud,”
Tifa whispered, hope and pleasure clear in her voice. Cloud yanked away from
Tifa when he realised that she had said his name, shock rushing through his
body…he was the one that she was hoping he was?
Tifa stared
up at him with mixed emotions in her eyes before she bit her bottom lip once
more and reached up to his mask. There was a faint clicking sound before she
pulled the mask all the way off his head, took a deep breath as she dropped it
off to the side and turned to take in his deep blue eyes and spiky blonde hair.
“It’s you,”
she whispered before a bright smile crossed her face, lightening up her eyes.
“I knew it was you!”
“Tifa…”
Cloud started but he was cut off when Tifa pressed her lips against his once
more. Cloud’s eyes closed as Tifa wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him
closer to her body as he slowly took her to heaven once more but Cloud needed
to explain…he needed his head to be cleared.
With that in
mind, he slowly pulled himself away from Tifa, reluctant to lose contact with
her but knew that he had to; he couldn’t keep this up with Tifa, not with
everything how it was.
“Tifa…”
Cloud started once more and Tifa sighed, understanding Cloud had something to
say but she had one question that was niggling at the back of her mind.
“Why didn’t
you tell me?” Tifa asked. Cloud looked away.
“I didn’t
want to disappoint you,” Cloud admitted. Tifa’s brows furrowed in confusion, “I
told you all that when I came back, I would a SOLDIER…I didn’t want to see the
disappointment when you found out that I was just a Shin-Ra grunt instead of a
hero I wanted to be.” Tifa felt understanding dawned on her before she cupped
the side of Cloud’s face, turning his face so he was looking into her eyes.
She allowed
her fingers to trace his features before she reached his lips.
“Cloud,”
Tifa’s index finger touched his bottom lip as she lifted her eyes up to meet
his and a tender smile graced her face, taking Cloud’s breath away, “I never
needed you to go to SOLDIER to prove yourself to me…in my eyes, you are already
a hero, my hero.” Cloud just stared at
her, searching her red eyes before he took her lips back into his, crushing her
body to his as he pressed her back against the hard brick wall.
Tifa moaned
as she arched her body against his, wrapping an arm around his neck while the
other slid around his waist as her legs spread so Cloud could fit between them.
Their dreams
were coming true…
Zack
scratched the back of his head as he looked around the throng of people before
frowning. He had distinctly heard Cloud saying that he would be hanging around
the water tower to make sure that nothing was going to happen.
Well, here
was he was, in front of the water tower with no Cloud in sight. A boy of ten
walked past Zack, causing Zack to grab the back of his shirt, attracting the
boy’s attention.
“Hey, have
you seen an infantryman hanging around here?” Zack asked and the boy nodded.
“Yeah, Tifa
approached him and they went up the stairs, they were talking when I last saw
them,” the boy told Zack, who nodded and let the boy go before taking the steps
in order to find Cloud.
He was
halfway up the stairs when his phone started ringing, startling him before he
pulled his phone out and flipped it open, holding it to his ear.
“Zack,” came
a warm female voice. Zack couldn’t help the soft smile that crossed his face as
he stopped his tracks and leaned his back against the wall.
“Aerith, how
is it going?” Zack greeted and was a met with a musical giggle.
“Everything
is fine. The flowers are selling quite well since you made the cute wagon – it
looks like we might be getting our jobs soon,” Aerith replied. She was kneeling
in front of the flowers, tending to them as she had her phone tucked between
her ear and shoulder. “How is everything where you are?”
“Fine…I’ve
just sort of lost one of my troopers at the moment. I think he is having a bit
of a problem with a girl here,” Zack explained.
“Do they
know each other?” Aerith asked.
“They both
lived here when he joined Shin-Ra. He won’t take off his mask but I have a
feeling that the girl knows it’s him and he’s hiding out,” Zack muttered.
Aerith smothered a smile despite the fact that he couldn’t see her.
“Maybe he is
unsure of the girl’s feelings for him,” Aerith suggested as she stood up, happy
with the flowers and moved over to the benches so she could sit down on one of
them. “He just needs to talk to her.”
“They are
talking, one of the boys told me that they were seen walking off together so I
am crossing my fingers here in hope that the sexual tension will go down and
we’ll be able to do our job and come back really soon!” Zack exclaimed,
eliciting giggles. He felt his heart skip a beat and couldn’t believe how much
he had missed her. She was the reason he wanted to get home as soon as he
could.
“Give them
time to sort out everything and you’ll be home before you know it,” Aerith
assured him. “I can’t wait to see you.” Zack bit his bottom lip as he closed
his eyes as the memories of their nights washed over him; they had known each
other for two years but had been sleeping together for three months. That was
mostly due to Aerith being a virgin and unsure how to approach him over their
relationship and due to Zack’s job as a SOLDIER had meant being away a lot and
for a long time.
“I can’t
wait to see you too,” Zack promised. “I was thinking a candle light dinner
followed by a walk and we’ll see where the night takes us.” Aerith gave a soft
moan.
“Hm, I can’t
wait…hurry up and get home,” she teased him causing Zack to chuckled.
“If you let
me get off the phone, I can hunt down my trooper then we can go and make sure
the Mako Reactor is completely safe and secure then I can come home to my
girl,” Zack told her. Aerith felt warmth filling her heart over Zack’s
endearment.
“Okay, I’ll
see you soon,” Aerith said, Zack grinned.
“I’m
counting the days down,” Zack told her and they both hung up together,
excitement bubbling inside of them over meeting each other soon. Zack placed
the phone back into his pocket and continued making his way up the stairs.
When he
reached the top, he smiled when he saw the kids running about playing games and
laughing as they caught each other. Moving closer to a building, he was about
to ask the people if they had seen Cloud and Tifa when something caught his
attention.
Zack frowned
when he heard a low moan of pleasure before rounding the building and smirked
when he saw familiar spiky blonde hair boy making out with a familiar dark hair
girl.
“Cool it
down kid, there are other people around,” an amused voice broke in Cloud and
Tifa’s embrace, causing them to pull away and meet amused blue eyes before they
broke away from each other completely, blushing. Zack grinned at the sight, he
was pleased that Cloud had finally let Tifa know who he really was and it was
obvious that Tifa was more than happy to see him.
“Zack,”
Cloud growled but Zack just grinned wider, enjoying Cloud’s discomfort.
“I’m just
saying that you two should get a room if you don’t want people to disturb you,”
Zack told Cloud. “It was getting a little hot around here, I first thought it
was the heatwave but somehow, I don’t think it is.” Tifa blushed even harder.
“Zack,”
Cloud gritted out as his cheeks turned even redder. In the back of his mind, he
couldn’t help but feel that it was something a big brother would do when he saw
his little brother making out but it didn’t make the situation any less
embarrassing.
“We’ll just
go,” Tifa mumbled as she grabbed Cloud’s hand and was about to pull him away
when Zack nodded.
“The inn
room is free. I think that would be a better place to make out,” supplied Zack
before he smirked, watching Cloud and Tifa trying to walk away without drawing
suspicions to themselves, “less children to corrupt.”
Cloud
flipped Zack off with his middle finger, increasing Zack’s amusement at the
situation.
“Just ignore
him,” Tifa tried to calm Cloud down. Even she could see the funny side of the
situation but it didn’t lessen her embarrassment over being caught with her
first kiss with Cloud.
“You might
want to put on a ‘do not disturb’ note on the handle,” Zack called after them,
winking at Cloud when he turned his head to glare at the older man with Tifa
pulling him away.
When they
were out of sight, Zack just sighed amused to himself before he clapped his
hand. “Now, that’s what I call a rocking love.” With a nod of his head, he
walked off in the opposite direction, whistling to himself.
