When traveling through the time portal affectionately referred to in literature as the Historia Crux, I commonly feel – for the lack of a better word – energized. If I had to explain why, I’d probably have to assign blame to the way that the wormhole has a tendency to suck all life out of any given plane at a time and restore it someplace else. The energy that charges the rift is enormous. I sometimes wondered if it might be a good representation of Etro herself. Now, as I pass different gates it’s easy to get a sense for what the plane might be like based on what the energy is around that portal. Every portal is different, so the energy surrounding that portal is different. That might be how I’m able to identify which portals I’ve been to and which I haven’t.
There was one world, one portal that I couldn’t begin to be able to describe. There was something about it that caught my eye, and shit, that was probably the worst thing I could have done at that point. Why? Because it looked back. As badly as I was searching for a place to be, there was a force radiating off of that gate that searched for lost souls to consume. It reeked of death and treachery. I probably would have felt more remorseful toward its existence if I hadn’t been trying so inefficiently to escape from its stomach curdling gaze. The heart wants what the heart wants, and that gate wanted me. It wanted me so badly that I would swear to this day, it reached out for me and forced me through, damned to hell if I had any say in the matter at all. The gate itself was black. I couldn’t breathe. My eyes stung as I searched through the darkness. My lungs screamed for air as I foolishly tried to breathe. The world felt like an iron curtain that I was caught inside of. I became immediately aware that there was no ground beneath my feet. I could spin, twist, and thrash about. Beads of something shined about a foot in front of me before disappearing into the darkness. I reached for them – the air was so thick I could quite literally swim through it. Wait. Swim? The thought occurred to me that perhaps I wasn’t in the air at all. Perhaps I wasn’t falling, perhaps I was sinking? Yes… Yes! That was it! My eyes were starting to adjust to the darkness and I could see veins of light shining at me from below in thin, parallel strips. I was in the water – I was under a dock! Immediately, I somersaulted and kicked my way to the surface, gasping for breath just a little too soon before I broke the water’s barrier to the sky. It certainly was a spectacular event. I was still under the dock, but I could feel the moon shining brilliantly on my cheeks. I coughed, splashed, and reached through the boards to hold myself steady while I caught my breath. The world was eerily silent. Of course, what had I expected? I needed to get out from underneath the dock. I’d had it with death and suffering, and I had absolutely no intention to explore, but I knew I needed an artifact to reopen the gate. Unfortunately, despite my will, the gate once again had surprises in store that would contradict the path that I preferred to take. The moon vanished and the world once again was black! “Fuck you, damnit!” I cursed, laying my anger upward with my fists, “How the hell am I supposed to find anything without any goddamn light!?” My fist broke contact with the dock, sailing a good six inches or so into the air. Water from the ocean rained down and dripped onto my nose “How indeed,” a mysterious snide voice responded. I froze. Where had that voice come from? Had I imagined it? No. No, I could feel the voice now. He was grabbing at my arm. Before I had a chance to demand release, I was yanked through the dock, splitting planks apart at all sides during my ascent. “Explain yourself!” the voice demanded. But, it wasn’t a voice any longer. The voice belonged to a man… a very tall and very tough looking man. I swallowed and blinked as my eyes tried to focus on the detail of his face. “Just – Just passing through, really…” I decided. “Mind putting me down now?” The blonde smiled a sarcastic, toothy smile. “Yeah. I really do.” I frowned and my brow furrowed. Who did this guy think he was? Well fine. No problem at all. I knew one way to solve this dispute. My weapons may have gotten lost in the ocean, but there was one form of weapon that didn’t require a channel. “Thunder!“ I summoned, jarring my free arm out towards his chest. Even in the moonlight, with its pale glow, I could see his face grow drastically whiter still. The clouds above us began to rumble and crash into one another. “You’re one of them!” he barked, the grip on my forearm tightening with each millisecond, “You—You! You can cast!” “That’s right douchebag!” I heard myself retort. “And I’ve got plenty of mana to sp—“ My lightening attack took us both by surprise. He hadn’t been expecting it, and stupid me for casting “thunder” when I had just been pulled none too gently out of a bottomless ocean abyss. The literal shock of my attack paralyzed my body for a good four seconds. it was an experience I'd endured before, but not while drenched in nasty sea water. Slowly, I felt my eyes closing on their own as my consciousness began to drift away from the "here and now." You see...That’s just how I was back then. No matter how much I’d like to deny it, I was quick, impulsive, and risky. Some traits worked to my advantage though, especially considering what I would see when I opened my eyes.[NAN]
