Disclaimer: I don’t own Final Fantasy VII or any of its characters. SquareEnix does. I make no money from this…I just like to play with them. A/N: Here’s chapter two. I’m so sorry it took me so long to post it—real life kicked me in the butt last week, to the tune of a very close relative needing a four day hospital stay. Scary times, but everything is better now. Hope you all enjoy this chapter. This one is shorter, but the following chapters start to get longer, I promise! *****
Part 2: Her Fifteenth Birthday
“Has everyone had enough?”
“More than enough!” Marlene said with a laugh. “Here, here!” came the unanimous cry. Marlene leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. She was happiest at moments like this, with her close friends and family gathered around the enormous dining room table. It was her fifteenth birthday, and Tifa had made all her favorite foods for the party, and everyone Marlene cared deeply about was gathered around the table. “If I eat another bite, I might quite possibly explode,” Yazoo chimed in. “Well, that wouldn’t do,” Jeffery Anders said. He gave his boyfriend a sly smile. “No dessert for you, then.” “But, there’s always room for dessert,” Yazoo argued. “Especially when it’s birthday cake and ice cream.” “He’s quite right,” Rufus Shinra said. Marlene hid a smile as a heated, yet good-natured argument broke out on the topic. This always happened, when they were all together like this. Sooner than later, Vincent would step in and tell them to knock it off. He always did. In the meantime, Marlene contented herself with watching as her adoptive uncles and their spouses argued and teased each other about the topic. Well, everyone but Loz. He very rarely engaged in the silly little arguments, and he never brought a date to their little get-togethers. Marlene frowned slightly as she pondered that thought, and her gaze searched him out at the opposite end of the table. He was currently watching the escalating argument with an amused grin on his face. Why was the man still alone? “Marlene, what’s wrong?” She looked sideways at her father, and then nodded in Loz’s direction. “I was just wondering why he never brings anyone to our parties.” She kept her voice low, so only her father could hear her over the din. Barrett looked down at Loz, and after a moment he gave Marlene a smile that seemed almost sad. “Maybe he’s saving himself for someone special,” Barrett said. “Maybe,” Marlene allowed. Her frown deepened slightly. “You’d think that he’d have people practically throwing themselves at him. He’s a Shinra General, and well, he’s good-looking. I can’t believe he’s alone after all these years.” Barrett smirked a little. “So he should just settle for anyone?” “Of course not!” Marlene said. For some reason, the suggestion ruffled her feathers a little. As if just anyone would be good enough for Loz! For some reason, her reaction made Barrett laugh and reach out to muss her hair. “Don’t worry about it too much, Marlene. He wouldn’t want you to, and you know I’m right.” “I guess,” Marlene said. Vincent’s raised voice brought their conversation to an end. “Perhaps we should serve the cake and ice cream rather than argue about it.” “That’s the best idea I’ve heard all evening, Father,” Loz said with a laugh. Marlene smiled. She liked Loz’s laugh a lot. She always had. It made his green eyes dance with mirth. “I’ll go get it,” Tifa said. “Everyone stay put, I’ll be right back.” ***** Later, after Marlene and Denzel had both gone to bed, Loz left the others in the dining room and found Barrett in the kitchen. The man was finishing the dishes. Loz found a towel and started to wipe the plates drying on the rack. “Marlene was upset about something tonight,” Loz said quietly. “I saw her talking to you, and she was frowning.” Barrett said nothing for a few minutes, and then he sighed. “She wanted to know why you never bring a date to these things.” Loz went still for a moment, and then resumed wiping the plate he held dry. He opened a cupboard and placed it on top of the stack before reaching for another. “What did you tell her?” “I suggested that maybe you were waiting for someone special,” Barrett said. “Vincent interrupted before the conversation could get much further than that. And I wouldn’t have told her anyway, Loz. It’s not my place.” “I know,” Loz said. “Well, you told her the truth, in a manner of speaking.” Barrett emitted a sound that might have been either a snort or a laugh. “Yeah, I guess I did.” He turned his head and locked gazes with Loz. There was a sort of sad resignation in the man’s eyes. “She is someone special, isn’t she?” “Yes,” Loz said with a nod, “she is.” ***** TBCWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
