Hope flipped through his TV’s guide menu. "To Be Announced" was still in all the slots, the cable had only come on that morning and the box still wasn’t fully on-line. He sat back on his sofa and looked around the apartment. It was noon of his third day in the apartment. The important boxes had been unpacked, his furniture and bedroom were set up, and while he had a few more things to do before he was fully settled, for now, his new home was starting to look like a home. His back was still sore to prove it.
Hope looked at the clock, almost noon, and stood up. He was moving into the kitchen when there was a knock at the door, and he turned to answer it as he headed past it.
"Hey. Not interrupting anything am I?" Serah asked, her hands held behind her back. She was wearing a similar number to the one she had on when Hope met her, a loose pink blouse with a knee-length pleated skirt.
"Uh, no, was just gonna make some lunch. What’s up?" Hope replied. Serah thrust out her hands, revealing a small basket with assorted food items piled in it.
"Housewarming gift." She smiled brightly. Hope returned it.
"Thanks." He took it from her and stepped back. "You wanna come in, if you don’t mind macaroni I can put on enough for two."
"Sure, thanks. I wasn’t up to making anything and Claire is a crappy cook." Serah headed into the apartment, Hope letting the door shut behind her and heading into the kitchen while Serah toed off her flip-flops and sat on the sofa in the living room.
"She said to call her Lightning the other day, how come?" Hope called out to Serah as he set the basket of goods on the counter and opened the cupboard.
"Started it in high school when she became a total tomboy, said her old name was dull and wanted something cooler," Serah called back. "Mom said it was a phase. It wasn’t a phase." Hope laughed as he filled a pot with water and set it on the stove. "So you went to Palumpolum, what did you take?"
"Internet technologies," Hope replied, pouring the box of noodles into the pot. "You know, website design, signals, satellites, all that boring stuff."
"Cool. There’s a TV station downtown, maybe you could look for work there," Serah replied.
"Yeah, I know. I start there at the beginning of the next month, already spoken to them." Hope turned the burner on and headed into the living. "What you planning on?"
"Social sciences. I want to be a teacher but the parents say they’ll only spring for teacher’s college once I have a proper degree. You know, make sure I have options." Serah rolled her eyes.
"Sounds great," Hope nodded. He silently cursed his shyness. As Noel had said, Serah was cute and certainly friendly, but small talk had always been a problem with him, he never knew what to say to keep the conversation going until it hit a particular topic that interested him.
"So…um…" He struggled to think of something to say. A voice in his head silently chanted ‘don’t blow it, don’t blow it’. "Uh…what’s Cla, er, Lightning, do?’
"You can get away with Light for her," Serah said. "She’s a security guard at an office building. She puts the icy front to good use there. Don’t worry, she’s fine once you get to know her."

Three hours later, two empty pasta bowls were in the sink and Hope was leaning on the back of the sofa still talking to Serah who had moved to the spot next to him. The pink-haired girl was thinking, her eyes up at the ceiling.
"Okay, um… The Valentine Cases."
"Shit," Hope said.
"I like that show!" Serah said indignantly. "The main guy is dreamy."
"Sure, the cast is attractive, but the writing is awful.
"Well I don’t watch it for the writing." Serah giggled and winked.
"If you want eye candy, go to the Internet."
"I do."
Hope chuckled nervously at Serah’s very suggestive leer.
"Do you watch The Elemist?" He tried to change the subject.
"Are you kidding? I practically worship it!" Serah’s eyes lit up. "Books are so much better though."
"Eh, the books are too slow with the plot. The show cuts out all the fluff, gets to the good stuff," Hope replied.
"I guess I could see the appeal in that." Serah’s leer was back, and Hope smiled to hide his shyness again. She looked away and bit her lip. "Hope… can I be upfront with something?"
"Um… sure?" Hope replied, not sure what she meant. Serah turned her eyes back to him, and lunged. Hope found himself pressed back against the arm of the chair with Serah draped over his chest and her lips on his. Hope held still for a moment. Serah’s breath was warm on his face, and her lips tasted like cherries. After she didn’t move for a few seconds, Hope awkwardly moved his hands around her sides to hold her lower back. Her skin seared him from beneath the thin fabric of her blouse, and he felt her shift closer. She must have taken his hands on her as a cue to keep going, because her arms came around his neck and her kiss became deeper. It was Hope who broke it not long after, panting heavily.
"S-Serah…" he stammered, staring up at her. Her eyes had taken on a deeper shade of blue, and her face was flushed. She slowly and deliberately ran her tongue over her lips.
"You taste good," she whispered. Hope didn’t get a chance to respond, she was already leaning back in to kiss him again. Hope felt something brush his lips, and hesitantly opened his mouth. Serah’s tongue entwined with his own, the girl tilting her head for better access. One of her hands gripped his shoulder for support. Then drifted down his chest, padding along his loose grey T-shirt…
Hope pulled back and gasped sharply as Serah’s hand palmed his growing erection through his jeans. She giggled at his stunned expression and ran her hand up and down the bulge. Hope shuddered in response. Serah leaned around him to flick the lobe of his ear with her tongue, and below her fingers made short work of the button of Hope’s jeans, and the zipper soon followed. When Hope felt Serah’s teeth graze his ear lobe and the band of his underwear lift from his waist, his frozen world unthawed.
"Wait. Stop." He gasped and looked at Serah as she brought her head up. She looked concerned.
"What’s wrong?"
"We… we can’t…"
"Why not?" Serah replied. Then her eyes widened and she brought her hands up to her mouth. "Oh god. You have a girlfriend. I’m so, so sorry, I didn’t think…" she scrambled off him to sit on the sofa again.
"No, I’m single!" Hope said, sitting up. Serah let out a sigh of relief.
"Then what’s the problem?" She tilted her head quizzically and turned back to Hope.
"Well, we kinda just met," Hope said awkwardly. Serah’s expression didn’t change. "We barely know each other."
"We’ve spent all afternoon chatting."
"That’s not exactly what I meant."
"If you’re worried about diseases, relax, I’m clean. You are, right?"
Hope stared at Serah, his face red and eyes wide. "I…. yes!"
"Then what’s… oh jeez you’re gay." Serah turned forward and facepalmed.
"I’m not gay!" Hope almost screeched the sentence. Serah looked up again, confused again.
"So, if you’re single, straight, and clean… what’s the problem?"
Hope stood up and clenched his hands in his hair. "The problem… I don’t know you! And you’re… you were just on me a minute ago."
"I’m not looking for a boyfriend, Hope, calm down." Serah smiled warmly and stood up, putting her arms around his neck. "I’m just looking for a little fun." She pressed herself forward to kiss him again, and Hope gently pushed her back.
"So… just, casual sex?"
"Yup."
Hope blinked. He wasn’t used to girls being attracted to him, especially not this openly. His handful of dates in high school had been due to lost dares or with girls too shy to ask anyone else out, and in college he had only mustered up the strength to ask out one girl, and after three days and the night he lost his virginity he had been so awkward around her she had dumped him.
"Um… this is kinda a new thing to me," he said. Serah laughed.
"Don’t worry," she cooed. She flopped back down on the sofa, pulling Hope down on top of her. "We can go slow." Her lips met Hope’s neck, and he stood up, swallowing heavily.
"P-please leave." He looked down and realized his pants had fallen down around his thighs, and pulled them up to re-zip them. Serah frowned and put a hand on his arm.
"Hope…"
"Please, go," he repeated. Serah stood up and made for the door, sliding her feet into her flip-flops. She paused before opening to turn back. Hope kept his head down, and waited until he heard the door open and close again before falling back onto the sofa. He took a shaky breath and closed his eyes. His hands still remembered the warmth of Serah’s body, and he still had the taste of cherries on his lips. Looking across the sofa, a ghostly image of the girl appeared in his memory and winked at him.
"…gotta get out of here." Hope stood up and grabbed his keys from the table.

Serah let the apartment door swing shut behind her and headed right into the kitchen, grabbing one of the only two beers left in a six-pack.
"Went straight for the booze, bad sign." Serah saw Lumina siting on the couch playing PS3 and sat down on the other end. "How’d it go?" the younger sister asked. Serah looked at the TV, one of the FPS games she’d never had a taste for, and took a long drink. She didn’t indulge in alcohol often but she felt like she needed it.
"He told me to leave," she muttered.
"He’s gay huh?"
"Nope."
"Girlfriend?"
"Nope."
Lumia paused and gave Serah a strange look. "So what’s his problem?"
"Beats me." Serah shrugged and took another drink. "I guess I came on too strong for him." Lumina gave her a look, and Serah returned a glare. "What?"
"You? Too strong? You’ve been over there for hours, were you working up the courage to make your move?"
"Well he seemed a nice guy, I wanted to make sure he was okay to be with," Serah said.
"If he’s packing enough, do you care what kind of guy he is?" Lumina replied.
"We’re not all you," Serah snorted. "He’s a great guy, he’s nice, he’s funny. And he’s so adorably awkward…" she grinned as her thoughts went back to where they’d been during their small talk. "I just wanna throw him down on a flat surface somewhere and have my way with him."
"You probably didn’t even touch his dick," Lumina said.
"Did so! … through his underwear." Lumina laughed out loud at Serah’s confession. "Oh shut up!"
"Did you at least get your tongue down his throat."
"Yeah, HA!"
"Good, you’re not completely helpless." Lumina and Serah turned at the sound of a door slamming in the hall.
"Yup, I spooked him." Serah sighed and took another drink, a longer one. She grimaced and smacked her lips. She was remembering why she didn’t drink.
"So what now?" Lumima prompted.
Serah shrugged. "I’ll give a day or so to calm down, if I scared him off I need to play it slower. I’ll apologize and ask if we can still be friends, and work from there."
"Yup, and in three months maybe you’ll have the guts to work up to hand-holding!" Lumina said in a falsetto voice, clasping her hands beneath her chin and batting her eyes. Serah took a drink and rolled her eyes. "You had your chance with the new blood. Let me take a swing at him," Lumina said.
"I don’t think that’s a good idea. You might scare him into moving out."
"I didn’t with Snow."
"He… wait what? You tried Snow before I got to him?"
"No, he told me to get out. But you see? You couldn’t even tell. And don’t look at me like that, you got him in the end right?"
Serah thought and leaned back on the couch.
"I guess, take your best shot at him. Just don’t ruin it for the rest of us, this one’s a keeper."
"Trust me." Lumina grinned brightly, and Serah let out a groan.
