The Island
Chapter 2
The crowds of women watching the six men walking through their village had only grown. Cloud presumed word had gotten around about them and everyone wanted to see the men that would be joining the village. “And apparently father their children.”
Lightning led them to a large, long hut. Inside, several long tables were set up with chairs and mismatched plates and eating utensils, along with bowls of fruits and vegetables. At a far end of the hut, it was open air and a woman with blonde hair tied into pigtails was turning meat on spits over fires. Another fire nearby had a grill over it, and another fire that was currently out had a sheet of steel propped over it.
Lightning looked in the direction of the woman cooking. “Penelo!” Penelo turned at the sound of her name, and her eyes landed on Cloud and his friends.
“Oh, it’s you!” Penelo smiled and came closer. “You must be the new arrivals I heard about. I imagine you’re hungry, hm?”
“Starved,” Zidane said.
Penelo nodded. “Well, grab a plate and help yourselves. Let me know if you need anything. Light, you staying too?”
Lightning shook her head. “Kairi is going to show them around the village. I’ll be back with her.” She turned and left without a word. Penelo nodded her head again, and went back to the cooking meat. Cloud stood awkwardly, wondering what to do.
“Is their food safe to eat?” Hope whispered.
“Let’s find out.” Riku reached out to the nearest bowl of fruit and grabbed a green apple. He bit into it and chewed. After a moment he shrugged. “Tastes like an apple.” He saw the others staring at him. “Hey, if they were gonna kill us, they would have done it while we were out.” He sat down and kept eating, and grabbed an orange from the bowl too. Zack and Sora each picked up plates and headed to the spits. Cloud picked up a plate of his own and followed them.
Zack looked over the cooking spits. “What kind of meat is this, anyway?”
Penelo looked up from the spit she was turning. “We hunt lots of ocean birds. There’s animals on the island, but we try not to hunt them so their population can sustain itself. I don’t know what names you might use for them, though.” She took a long cooking fork from a nearby table, and a large knife. She stuck the fork in a hunk of meat and sliced off a strip. “Here, try it and see what you like.”
Zack took his smaller fork off his plate and stuck it into the meat. He lifted it, bit off a piece, and nodded. “Not bad.” He headed back to the tables.
“I’ll try the same,” Zidane said, holding out his plate. Penelo cut off another strip and dropped it on his plate. Zidane left, and Cloud stepped forward.
“You, too?” Penelo asked, holding the knife over the meat. Cloud looked back at the tables where the other five were now sitting and eating.
“You have fruits and vegetables I recognize in there. Where do you get them?”
Penelo smiled. “Some of our refugees have brought such things with them, or rarely we find packets of seeds. Either way, we use them to grow our own crops. We’re very fortunate that we have such good harvests here, by the blessings of the Goddess.”
“Right.” Cloud looked back at the meat. “Sure, I’ll try it.” Penelo cut off the strip and let it fall on his plate. “Thanks.” Cloud walked back and sat down next to Zack.
Zack finished chewing the meat in his mouth and leaned in. “So, fellas, what are we thinking?”
Hope bit his lip. “I’m thinking I’m never gonna see Mom again. Or anyone else.”
“Yeah…” Sora shook his head. “I mean, this place is nice, but still, we’ve lost our homes.”
Zidane waved his fork in the air. “Speaking totally selfishly here as a product of a really shitty foster care system with lots of student debt to his name after we graduated: I have been here less than an hour and would be totally okay with living here the rest of my life. Given the choice, I think I prefer it.”
“Same here.” Zack grinned. “Did you guys get a good look at them all on the way here? There is not a single ugly girl on this island. Hell, there isn’t a plain girl on this island, or an old girl. Woman, whatever. Point is, we got stranded, yeah, but we got stranded on an island of babes.”
“Yeah, I noticed,” Cloud replied. “How come they’re all in the same age bracket? Where’s the old people, the kids? Shouldn’t there be at least some kids here, or some men? Not all the kids fathered by other survivors could be girls. For that matter, where are the other survivors they said they’ve taken in?”
Sora shrugged. “Good question. I mean, there should be someone else here besides twenty-something women. It’s a statistical impossibility.”
Zack scoffed. “Why are you guys down about this? I repeat; we are stranded on an island of babes. An island full of women approximately our age, all of whom, from what I saw on the way here, are smoking hot, and many of which wanna have sex with us. Isn’t this what we were going to Costa del Sol for in the first place?”
Cloud rolled his eyes. “This isn’t as simple as that, Zack. Come on, don’t you think this all a little strange?”
Zack shrugged. “Hey, they have a Goddess, that’s pretty much all the explanation I need. Remember the Omega incident five years ago in Midgar? We’ve seen crazier shit than this on the news.”
“He’s got a point,” Zidane said. “I mean, like you said, island of babes, awesome. And yeah, some stuff about this set-up is weird. But maybe their Goddess makes all the kids they have female, or slows their aging, or lets them leave when they grow older. Could be anything. Why not ask the Mystic?”
“If it was something she was gonna explain, she probably would have,” Cloud said. “Besides, I’m not sure we can trust her. There’s something off about her.”
“Well, one thing is for sure,” Riku said. “Even if there is the chance they’re lying to us, what can we do about it? We know nothing about this island, none of us has any survival skills, we have no supplies. They’re willing to shelter us and feed us, so we need them. Even if there’s a catch to it besides the sex and kids, do we really have a choice?”
Sora nodded. “Riku’s right. And we could be worse off. We could be dead, or adrift at sea, or washed up on an island with no one on it. We’re alive, they’re friendly, and they can give us food and shelter.”
“So we’re agreed then?” Zack looked around the group. “We’re gonna join up?”
Sora, Riku, and Zidane nodded. Hope sighed. “Like Riku said, we don’t have much choice.”
“Cloud?” Zack looked at Cloud expectantly, and the other four turned to look at him.
“Well…” Cloud shook his head. “I dunno. You’re not wrong in that we need them, and yeah this stuff might just be me overthinking. But I’m not sure.”
Zack reached over and patted Cloud on the shoulder. “Hey, look at it this way; saying yes for now at least gets us a new home, and you can check out stuff while we’re here, right?”
“I guess…” Cloud nodded. “Okay. I’m in.”
“Awesome.” Zack leaned over to whisper. “So, how soon do you think we can get started with this ‘have sex with their women’ thing? Because Penelo is awfully cute and I think she likes me.”
“Speaking as the admittedly second-most horny guy here,” Zidane said, “can’t you keep it in your pants until tonight? They wanna do this initiation ritual. They probably expect us to go through with it before they sleep with us.”
“Good point.” Zack went back to his meat, finishing the last pieces of it. “Still, I had my eye on a lot of cuties out there.”
The curtain to the hut was pulled back, and a young woman with short red hair wearing a torn pink T-shirt and white shorts came in. “Hello. I’m Kairi. Lightning tells me you six need me to show you around the island.”
“Yes ma’am,” Zidane stood up and took her hand, kissing it. “And may I say it’s a pleasure to enjoy the company of a young lady as beautiful as you.”
Kairi giggled. “Well, I think I can guess at least one of you is planning to join the tribe tonight.”
Riku nodded. “We talked it over, we’re all going to.”
Kairi’s smile widened. “That’s wonderful! I admit some of us were worried. It’s very rare that someone declines the chance to join us, but there is always the fear.” She waved her hand forward. “Come with me, I’ll show you around.” Her smile faded. “Are you okay back there?”
Cloud turned his head. Sora had frozen in his seat and was staring at Kairi. Riku noticed and elbowed him. Sora blinked and shook his head. “Oh, um… yeah. I’m fine.”
“In that case, let’s go. You can come back to get more to eat afterward, if you like.” Kairi stepped outside, and Zidane and Zack followed her shortly. The others got up and filed out. “As you can tell, this is our meal area. We come here as we need to throughout the day, come and go as you please. There’s almost always one of our food managers on-hand to cook the previous day’s hunt and make sure other foods are available as needed.”
Kairi led them around the back of the hut. A large metal tank lay on the ground, and a ladder leading up to a wooden platform was built around it. Wooden barrels lay in a pile on the ground nearby. As far as Cloud could tell, the tank seemed to be an old fuel tank from a ship or plane. “This is our water supply, every morning a few of us travel to the river to fill the barrels. You can come here any time you need something to drink. All of us carry our own water gourds with us, so we’ll get you your own later.”
“The river?” Hope spoke up.
“Yes, our drinking water comes from a river fed by a waterfall on the eastern side of the island.” Kairi frowned. “Which reminds me; please do not leave the village limits without a member of the tribal guard. Our island is quite large and wild, and numerous predators lurk in the jungle. Even we do not stray without escort.”
Riku nodded. “Who are the tribal guard?”
Kairi stepped up to the ground and past them to continue the tour as she explained. “They are our warriors. There’s a dozen or so of them, I don’t recall the precise number. They hunt our game, escort other members of the tribe on jungle expeditions, and protect our village. You’ve already met Lightning, she’s the current leader of the tribal guard. Serah is her little sister, she and Garnet are our healers. See them if you feel ill or are somehow injured.”
“Do we need those excuses?” Zidane asked. Kairi giggled.
“Patience, the initiation will come tonight. It is tradition that new inductees remain pure of the tribe’s members until then.”
Cloud stepped forward. “About that. What does this initiation entail?”
Serah pointed behind Cloud, and he turned. A large fire pit was a distance away between the huts. “The Mystic will call us together after sunset, and a grand feast will be hosted. You will be our guests of honor. The Mystic will announce you to the tribe and call on you to name yourselves before us. Then you will choose one of us to consummate your new bond with the tribe as the rest of us continue the feast and the Mystic retires to the temple to pray to the Goddess to accept you into the tribe. Do not fear, though, the prayer is a mere formality and the Goddess never rejects anyone.”
Zack held up his hands. “Back up a few sentences. What was that about consummating our bond with the tribe?”
Kairi raised her eyebrows. “I’m sorry, I would have assumed the Mystic told you about this earlier. The initiation requires each of you to choose one of us to be your first partner of the tribe, to prove your commitment to us and our Goddess. We reserve the right to refuse you when asked, but most consider it an honor to be chosen.”
“First partner. Meaning…”
“The first member of the tribe you make love to.”
Hope’s eyes widened. “We have to publically choose one of you to have sex with? With everyone watching?”
Kairi’s eyes widened to match Hope’s. “Oh, no, no. I mean, we know some men in your world are aroused by such things, but it is not demanded. You may retire to a hut or any other location within reason.”
Sora took a breath. “But we still publically choose who we’re going to have sex with. And everyone knows we’re gonna be having sex tonight.”
Kairi shrugged. “Is that not the very reason we need you six at all?” The six looked at each other and said nothing more. “If there’s no further questions, I’ll show you six to your huts.” She turned forward and headed on.
Behind her, Sora walked faster and pushed past Riku to reach Zack. “Hey.”
Zack turned his head. “Yeah?”
“I’m choosing Kairi.” Sora gave Zack a knowing look. “Seriously.”
Zack grinned and clamped Sora on the shoulder. “Hey, chill. I saw you looking at her all awe-struck. She’s yours.”
Sora smiled sheepishly. “What about you? Who are you going to pick?”
Zack waved a hand in the air. “I’m a kid in a candy store. I could take any of these ladies. Trust me, I don’t think there’s gonna be competition.”
Before Sora would respond, Kairi stopped and turned. “Here. We always keep these huts available for any refugees we take in. They’re large enough to house two persons, you can divide yourselves up as you wish. Some of the items that washed up from your ship have been brought here, you may keep them or donate them to the tribe as you wish.”
Riku nodded and headed off to one of the huts. Hope followed him, and Riku paused at the curtained doorway to glance over his shoulder. Hope looked up. “Please? I mean, no offense to you guys,” he said glancing back, “but I don’t really know any of you all that well except for Sora.”
Riku pulled the curtain open and stepped to the side. “Get in.”
Hope smiled and hurried into the hut, Riku following.
Cloud looked between Zidane and Zack. “I have no preference.”
Zidane looked at Zack and shrugged. “Let the cousins bunk?”
“Works for me.” Zack lifted his hand in a wave at Cloud and Sora, and he and Zidane headed into another hut.
Kairi turned to Sora and Cloud. “If that’s all, I’ll let you six settle in for now and go through your belongings. I’ll return later to continue showing you about.”
Sora nodded. “Thanks.”
Kairi smiled at him as she walked past and headed into the village. Cloud watched Sora and saw his eyes quickly glance down as she passed, then back up.
“She’s cute,” Cloud said.
Sora blinked and nodded. “This whole arrangement is weird, but.” He held up his hands. “When in Rome, right?”
“Right. Come on, let’s check out our new home.” Cloud walked to the hut and pulled back the curtain.
Two matress made of plantstuffs and wood lay on either side of the hut. Mismatched pillows, threadbare and with some of their stuffing gone, lay on each. The furniture, like the rest of the village’s salvaged supplies, was a mash-up. There was a shelf with books in various states of condition, a chair with one leg gone and replaced with a tree branch, a long bench, a nightstand with two drawers, and a table with two chairs. Two suitcases lay on the table, along with several other items.
Cloud approached the table and snorted. “Hey, look.” He picked up a keyring and tossed it to Sora. “The boat keys.”
Sora caught the keys and held them up to look at them. “Goodie.”
Cloud looked over the miscellaneous items. Pens, a cell phone charger, a bottle of painkillers. He opened one of the suitcases. The clothes inside were still damp, and he rifled through them. “I think this is Zack’s stuff.”
Sora moved to the other suitcase and opened it. “I’ve got Hope’s, judging from the size. Think they have ours?”
The absurdity of the discussion struck Cloud, and he suddenly visualized the six of them arriving at a hotel in Costa del Sol and the hotel staff mixing up their bags. He shook the vision away. “Maybe. Hard to say if all our clothes washed up. I don’t think it matters much, though. As long as we fit each other’s stuff, not a lot of point to keep them to ourselves, right?”
“Right.” Sora held out a pale white and yellow button-up shirt. “Some of this stuff might fit me. Hope’s scrawny but so am I.”
“Hey, cool!” The two turned. Zack came through the curtain. “You got my stuff. Zidane got yours, Sora.”
“Great. Got mine?” Cloud asked.
Zack shook his head. “Nah, but check the drawers. They left us some stuff.”
Cloud looked at the nightstand again and walked over to pull a drawer open. Several shirts of various styles and colors lay inside, wrapped up into rolls and tied with some sort of string. He pulled open the bottom drawer and saw pants and shorts. The items were often discolored and had holes or frayed edges, but they were wearable.
Sora came up behind Cloud and looked over the clothes with him. “Looks like they’ll fit you.”
“Pick out something nice, boys.” Zack swung an arm over their necks. “Tonight’s gonna be a hell of a thing.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Drums, some string instruments Cloud didn’t recognize, and flutes filled the air alongside the fires of the massive firepit. The area around the pit was wide open, and now populated by an assortment of the tribal women dancing, talking, and eating. A long table had been formed by several other tables being brought together at one end of the open area, that now hosted the six men.
Sora looked down either side of the table. “Is anyone else really nervous?”
Zidane grinned. “What’s the matter, Sora? Can’t perform under pressure?” Sora scowled and picked up a breaded roll they had been served to throw it at him.
“I’m nervous,” Hope said quietly from the other side of Sora. “Really, really nervous.”
Beside him, Zack smiled. “Know who you’re gonna ask to be your special lady for the night?”
Hope nodded. “I do, but… well…”
“Are you a virgin?”
“No, no!” Hope rapidly shook his head. “I just…”
From the end of the table next to him, Riku rolled his eyes. “He’s had sex twice, and neither time was any good.”
Hope glared at him and punched him in the arm.
Zack laughed. “Relax, no one is good their first time.”
“Speak for yourself,” Riku muttered.
At the other end of the table next to Zidane, Cloud scanned the crowd. Now that the moment was actually upon them, he was trying to figure out which woman he would choose. As Zack had repeatedly reminded them, though, all of the women on the island were some degree of beautiful, and Cloud would have jumped at a chance with any of them. The events of the day and the many unanswered questions of the tribe still circled his head as well, and he couldn’t focus.
“Hey.” Zidane nudged Cloud to get his attention. “Know who you’re choosing?”
“No idea. You?”
“One idea.” Zidane winked and looked at the crowd. Cloud followed his gaze to see Garnet talking to another woman near the meat spits.
“She’s pretty. Love at first sight, huh?”
“Mhm.” Zidane drummed his fingers on the table. “Gotta admit though, a lot of cuties in the crowd.”
Suddenly, the music stopped, and the crowd fell silent. The women parted, revealing the Mystic standing on the far side of the fire pit opposite the table, her white hooded robes still hiding her face. Cloud hadn’t noticed when she had arrived.
The Mystic held her hands into the air. “My sisters, tonight we gather to welcome new additions to our tribe and our village. Though a great disaster took their ship and their lives from them, they yet live and have elected to join us and begin new lives among us. They were spared the sea and the storm, that they now arrive to aid our tribe, by the mercy of the Goddess.”
“By the mercy of the Goddess,” the crowd echoed.
“Tonight we honor them and welcome them among us, that together they and we shall prove their commitment to the tribe. May they find a suitor among us to take as theirs for the night, that under the watch of the Goddess, they give their passion and bodies to each other. By this consummation, may they join us for the rest of their lives, and bask in the blessings of the Goddess with us.” The Mystic lowered her hands. “I call upon them now to announce themselves to us, and select one of you to form this bond with.”
The crowd each turned to look at the table. Cloud glanced to the side to see what the others were doing, but he could only see Zidane clearly and he was waiting. Then, movement, and Cloud fully turned his head.
Zack stood up from the table and crossed to the front. He held up a hand and waved. “Hi, ladies. I’m Zack. Just gonna throw this out there; I’m the best endowed of us.” A few giggles came along with a few groans and eye rolls.
“Zack,” the Mystic said. “Who among us would you consummate your initiation with?”
Zack let out a breath and swept his eyes over the crowd. “I’m gonna be honest. You gals are all a gorgeous bunch, and any man would be lucky to have you for a night. So…” Zack held up his hands. “I’ll let you pick. I’m not choosey. Anyone who wants it, I’m game.”
“I will.” The crowd parted around the speaker. A red-haired woman in a red T-shirt and torn black jeans stepped up to Zack.
Zack smiled. “And you are?”
The woman returned the smile. “Cissnei.”
Zack nodded. “I promise you, Cissnei, this will be a night you’ll never forget.”
Cissnei nodded and moved to stand beside him. The Mystic put a hand to her chest and bowed. “The first of their number has chosen. Who would be next?”
“That’d be me.” Zidane stood up from his chair. “I’m Zidane. And I’m gonna throw this out there; Zack’s a liar and he knows it.” More laughs than Zack had gotten answered him, and Zack shot him a glare.
“Zidane, would you choose a woman among us to bond with?” The Mystic asked.
Zidane shook his head. “I’ll not, Mystic, for there is no choice to be had. While many of you are beautiful, there is only one among you I would claim as mine.” Zidane jumped on the table and looked around. When he saw Garnet, he smiled. “When I awoke from our ordeal, I beheld a face I mistook to be an angel. If she would allow it, I would make her mine.” He held out his hand. “Garnet?”
Garnet lifted a hand to her face as the crowd looked at her. Her face flushed red, she stammered. “I-I would be honored, Zidane. But please, I am no angel.”
Zidane jumped down from the table and quickly strode up to her. He took her wrist and gently brought it down. “You’ve yet to convince me of that, my angel.”
The Mystic looked at the table. Hope stood and took his time coming to the front. “Um… hello, all. I’m Hope.”
The Mystic nodded. “Hope. We await your decision.”
Hope took a breath. “Right. Okay…” He approached the crowd and held a hand up to motion the nearest woman aside. “Excuse me, please.” The women parted for him as Hope moved through the crowd. He glanced up. At the edge of the crowd, Serah was watching him with a small smile. Next to her, Lightning had her arms crossed and was giving him a considerably colder look. Hope stopped in front of them. “Ah… I’m sorry, Miss… I—”
“Hope.” Hope jerked and turned his head. Serah’s smile widened and she stepped forward. She reached down and took hold of his hands. “It’s alright. I accept.”
Hope gulped and nodded. “R-right. Thanks. I guess.”
Serah giggled and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “You’re very endearing when you’re nervous.”
Hope nodded and glanced up. Lightning was glaring at him. He quickly turned around to avoid eye contact and clenched Serah’s hand in his tighter.
Sora inhaled and put his hands on the arms of his chair to begin pushing himself up.
“I will be next.”
Sora paused and turned his head. Riku was standing and moving to the front of the table.
“And your name?” The Mystic asked.
Riku stopped. “Riku.” He looked over the crowd. “I’m not like the first few. I’m not poetic, and I’m not funny. But I know beauty when I see it, and I saw it earlier today.” Riku took a few steps into the crowd. “Kairi.” He reached down to take hold of her hips and pull her closer. “I choose you.”
Kairi bowed her head. “I accept. Thank you, Riku.”
Cloud looked at Sora. His jaw was clenched, and his fingers dug into the arms of his chair. Cloud considered going next to give him a chance to calm down, but Sora beat him to it. He took a breath and stood, his anger fading from his face. “I’m Sora.” He waved. “Hi, everyone.” He walked in front of the table and swung his arms a few times. “I’m pretty much in the same boat as Zack. I’ve met a few of you, but other than physical appearance I don’t know any of you very well, and you’re all very beautiful, so…” Sora held out his hands. “Whoever will take me, step up.”
A woman near the front of the crowd stepped up. The first thing that drew Cloud’s attention was that she wasn’t wearing the dirty and damaged salvaged clothing of the other tribe members chosen so far. Her garments were hand-made, a midriff-baring green top sewn from fabric swatches, and a short skirt made of strips of pale beige leather. Her hair was a bright orange, and tied into twin pigtails. She smiled at Sora as she stopped in front of him. “Hello, Sora. I’m Vanille.”
“Vanille.” Sora smiled back at her. “Nice to meet you.”
“And you.” Vanille took Sora’s hand and looked over his shoulder. Everyone, including his friends, turned to watch Cloud, the rest of the table empty. He inhaled deeply and got up.
“I’m Cloud. Um…” Cloud shrugged. “I don’t know any of you either. I’m really not used to this sort of thing, so… yeah. Any takers?”
The crowd didn’t respond but to look among themselves. No one spoke up.
Zack rolled his eyes. “Oh, give him a shot, he ain’t bad in bed and he’s a lot less mopey when he isn’t in public.”
The crowd laughed again. Cloud was unsure if he should thank Zack or glare at him.
“I’ll take you.” Cloud looked down. A woman had stepped up without him noticing. Another makeshift outfit like Vanille’s, a top sewn from different patterns of black and a skirt of the same. Cloud ignored the outfit and looked up at her face. Long black hair, brown eyes. “I’m Tifa.”
Cloud nodded. “Okay… yeah.”
The Mystic clapped her hands and held her arms to the sky again. “Praise be to the Goddess, that these outsiders and our sisters have found each other to forge new bonds each one another! Let this night echo in her memory as they are brought into our fold to know the same peace and prosperity that we have, by the mercy of the Goddess.”
Again the crowd repeated the blessing, “by the mercy of the Goddess.”

When the music began again, Sora turned and pushed past the dancers. He reached Riku and Kairi and pushed Riku’s shoulder. Riku turned around. “Hey.”
“What the hell was that?” Sora demanded.
“Is everything alright?” Kairi asked, looking between them.
“You knew what you wanted to do and it took you forever to work up the guts to do it,” Riku replied. “Hope stood up before you, and that kid slept with Mom until he was six.”
“Riku.” Kairi pulled on his sleeve. “What are you talking about?”
Sora cleared his throat to get her attention. “I was going to choose you. He knew that. So he took you instead.”
Realization dawned on Kairi’s face. “Oh.” She shook her head. “It isn’t a concern, this isn’t a commitment to one partner, if you’d like to make love later, Sora, it’s—”
“I know,” Sora interrupted. “He just did it to be a dick.”
Riku crossed his arms. “The lady can make her own decision. Kairi, up to you.”
Sora looked at her. Kairi bit her lip and stared back. “Riku… I don’t want to come between friends.”
“You won’t.”
Kairi nodded. “In that case, we should honor Sora’s wishes.”
“Go ahead.”
Kairi watched Riku for a moment, then took Sora’s hand. “I’m sorry I caused this.”
Sora glared at Riku and walked past him, taking Kairi with him. “Wasn’t your fault,” he said.
Riku let out a huff. He saw Vanille walking up to him. “So, you got tossed aside. Sorry on his behalf.”
Vanille took her time looking over Riku, and when she met his eyes, she consciously licked her lips. “Actually, I think I prefer this. How about you?”
Riku lowered his arms, surprised. “Let’s find out. Where’s your hut?”
“On the edge of the village, near the path to the beaches.”
“Is it far from here?”
“A bit.” Vanille tilted her head. “Is that a concern?”
Riku swiftly reached out and pulled her flush against him. “Only if you want them to hear what I’m going to do to you.”
He grinned down at her, and Vanille returned it.

Lightning watched the two couples slip away and turned her attention back to the crowd. Zidane and Garnet were already gone when she looked for them, and Zack had made a show of lifting Cissnei and carrying her off somewhere.
“I’d forgotten how eager we all are to throw ourselves at the first man to wash onto the shore,” she muttered. She looked beside her, and gasped. “Serah?” She looked around her, but there was no sign of her.

With the music back, the initiation seemed to have been forgotten, and the crowd fell back into conversation. Cloud wondered how many of them were talking about the choices the six of them had made. He saw Tifa looking around as well and took her hand to get her attention. “So, what now?”
Tifa turned to look at their hands, then up at him. “The feast and the dance will continue late into the night. Your role in it is done.”
“No, I mean…” Cloud licked his lips. “You and me.”
“We can stay here, if you want. As long as the bond is consummated before dawn, there isn’t a concern. Or, we can go now.”
Tifa looked at the crowd again, and Cloud allowed himself another look over her. She was unquestionably attractive; her clothes left little to the imagination and she had a voluptuous figure. Cloud looked back up at her. Somehow, the idea of spending more time with her and getting to know her would just make this more awkward. “Sure, let’s go.”
Tifa smiled. “Come with me.” She turned and led him through the crowd.
As Cloud was pulled along, he noticed the Mystic still standing by the fire pit.
She was watching him.
