A few days had passed since his steamy encounter with the mysterious woman from the festival. While the sex had been fun, that wasn’t what occupied his mind. It was the overwhelming feel of familiarity associated with her that kept him so distracted.
“Hello? Earth to Snow!” Lebreau said as she snapped her fingers in his face.
“What? Sorry.” He said as he regained his focus.
Today was one of the few days the gang had off and they decided to have a small bonfire at Snow’s to celebrate. It was a beautiful day out. The sky was clear, barely even a cloud in sight. It was just chilly enough to have a comfortable fire and, above all else, they had a moment to breathe and relax.
Snow was laying on a blanket he laid out next to the fire pit, staring at the clear blue sky lost in his own mind.
He was brought back to reality by Lebreau standing over him, beer in hand.
“What’s with you lately?” She asked as she joined him on the sand covered blanket.
“I don’t know…I just…I met someone at the festival the other night and I can’t stop thinking about her.” He admitted as he sat up and opened his beer.
Lebreau tried her hardest to hide her excitement and, before she could explode in girlish screams, he interrupted her.
“Noooot like that!” He said quickly.
She rolled her eyes in frustration and said nothing. Only taking a sip from her beer and waiting for him to speak.
“I mean, yeah. She was fun and I enjoyed what time we spent together but…I feel like I know her from somewhere and I just can’t place it. It’s driving me insane.” He admitted, the sound of defeat filled his voice.
“Maybe she’s from…” Her sentence stopped there.
“I mean, it’s possible but, why can’t I remember her? How did I know her? Does she remember me? There are so many questions and I have no way to find her.” He sighed as he took a big gulp from his bottle.
“What’s her name? Maybe I can ask around.” She raised her eyebrows and shrugged.
“Fang…” He answered as he half buried his bottle into the sand next to him to keep it from falling over.
Lebreau squinted at him with a puzzled look on her face. “Fang?” She asked.
“Yeah,” He said as he dusted away the sand on his shorts. “You know her?” He asked.
“Actually, I do. Her and her overly optimistic friend own a little flower and fruit shop along the boardwalk. It’s where I get most of the fruits for the bar.” She said confidently as she stood up. “C’mon. Let’s go!” She said happily as she offered him her hand.
As they approached the boardwalk, Snow began to feel nervous.
‘What if I’m better off not knowing?’
‘What if I’m just crazy?’
‘What if…’
He had dozens of questions flooding his mind but he knew he had to speak to her again. Something in the pit of his stomach demanded it.
“It’s just up there.” She pointed to a colorful display at the end of the pier.
In the distance he could see a smaller female with bright orange hair carrying a basket of flowers, spinning around without a care in the world. Not far from her side was the woman he remembered. Dressed in the same blue dress she was wearing the night they met.
“Fang!” Lebreau yelled. “I think you met my friend the other night. You left quite the impression on him. He hasn’t been the same Snow since.” She joked as she waved to younger girl.
“I bet I did.” She winked at Snow as she put one hand on her hip. “Nice to see you again, hero.”
“Yeah…” He said as he nervously ran his hand through his hair, avoiding eye contact. “You, too.”
“So, what brings you all the way out here?” She asked.
“I…I don’t really know.” That was all he could bring himself to say. He was clearly nervous.
“Oh for the love of…” Lebreau intervened. “Did you guys know each other in another life?” She asked harshly.
“Aye. We did.” Fang’s words made his heart freeze. He even forgot to breathe for a moment.
“W-Wait, we did?!” He asked as he finally made eye contact with her.
“Mhm. You knew her, too.” She pointed to her frolicking friend. “Vanille.”
“How?” He asked as he crossed his arms, as if it would protect him from the impact of her answer.
“It’s a long story. One I’m not sure you’re ready to hear. Just know, we were all friends. Some may even say we were family.” She said calmly as her eyes locked onto Vanille, getting softer.
“Were we…?” He asked, implying they were more than friends.
“Ha! You would have loved they but no. My heart belongs to her. Yours on the other hand,” She raised her hands and turned away. “Yours was a damn mess.”
“Figures...” Lebreau said quietly. Making Snow throw her a glare.
“So the other night then…” He asked carefully. Choosing not to give too much detail in front of his overly passionate friend.
“Eh, that was just for me. Curiosity, mostly.” She turned back to him and laughed. “Why? Want another go?” She winked.
“Uh, no. I mean,” His eyes widened at his mistaken tone. “It was amazing. Don’t get me wrong. It’s just…” He pointed to Vanille. “I didn’t know about her.”
“We aren’t officially anything. She just carries the key to my heart. Not to what happens between my legs.” She shrugged. “It’s been like this for…well…ever.”
They stood in silence until Lebreau realized the time.
“Snow, I have to get going. Gadot is probably ready to rip his hair out by now.” She said lightly with a mischievous smile.
“Before you go,” Fang said as she reached into the black leather pouch that rested on her hip. “This belongs to you. I hope you remember sooner rather than later.” She said as she handed him a black bandana. “You know where to find me when you do.”
He accepted the gift from her and put it in his pants pocket as they exchanged a final smile and he turned to leave.
“Feel any better?” Lebreau asked as she linked her arm with his.
“I’m not sure. I guess so.” He answered. The truth was, he was left with more questions. Questions he knew Fang wouldn’t answer. Not yet, anyway.
The walk back to their village was met with silence. Nothing but the sound of waves crashing along the beach and birds singing their final songs for the day.
