Surely, She Ain’t Serious
Epilogue
Cid had been awake now for well over forty-eight hours and he was exhausted. He had actually left the helm of the ship half way between Rocket and Midgar to try and sleep, but the thought of what was going to happen between Shera and he upon his return got the better of him and made him restless.
Now, after making one quick stop at a certain shop, Cid was home, standing in the street before his house, finishing one last cigarette while trying to amass all of his courage to go on in and face Shera now that his feelings were out on the table.
It wasn’t proving easy.
That ever doubting part of his mind that had kept him clear of commitment since the passing of his wife was doing its utmost in its death throes to get him to turn around and run away.
But he wouldn’t do that-- not now.
"Can’t believe I’m gonna fuckin’ do this," he huffed to himself, dropping his spent cigarette into the street before starting toward his front door. Unconsciously, he reached into his jacket pocket to see if he had his house keys, although Shera never locked the door.
Once on the porch, the pilot knit his brow, took a deep breath and then opened the door. "Shera?"
There wasn’t any response, and he stepped inside, heading instinctively for the kitchen. If nothing else, it would be more than a little nice to have some tea.
As he came around the corner, his heart jumped into his throat. There was Shera, standing before the stove, setting the teapot down upon one of the burners.
She heard his entrance and turned to face him, offering a nervous smile. Shera couldn’t help but wonder if he was going to follow through with what he’d told her the other day. "Cid…"
The blond examined her from where he’d stopped for several moments. For once, she wasn’t wearing her old lab coat that she still insisted on holding onto, despite her work for Shinra having ended ages ago. Instead, she was wearing a somewhat form fitting blue dress, and had makeup on-- an unusual thing. Her hair was down and her glasses were noticeably missing.
Cid had always known she had a nice body under all that she generally wore, but he’d never realized that it was this nice. Shera’s beautiful… "I’m back."
Having been unsure of when he was going to return, Shera had been keeping herself done up since his phone call, wanting to impress him. By the cocked eyebrow he had, and the smirk he presently displayed, she figured it had worked. "Hi."
Cid swallowed hard before forcing himself forward. He stopped just a few inches from her, and looked down into her hazel eyes. "Like I said on the phone the other day, I’m real sorry for all I’ve put you through."
There was a hint of tears in her eyes, and she looked to the side. "It’s okay, Cid. I never really minded."
Knowing that his words would fail him miserably, not to mention the fact that he wanted to avoid anymore ‘feeling’ related talk, he simply decided to act. He brought up his right hand and placed it beneath her chin, making her look at him once more.
Shera’s heart was pounding such that she wondered if it would hold out. She’d dreamed of the moment when she would finally get through to him and couldn’t believe that it was happening.
Seeing the tears still in her eyes, and her lower lip trembling slightly, Cid snapped and leaned down, letting his mouth meet hers. He had to admit to himself that it was the best kiss that he’d had since Sarah had died.
Shera felt herself pulled against Cid’s body, as his arms closed around her back, holding her tightly. A small sound escaped her, as her long withheld feelings for the man before her flooded in.
After several minutes, Cid pulled back and smiled down at her, pleased to see the impassioned expression she wore. "So, how ya been?"
Her lips upturned into a wide smile. "Lonely…but I’m better now."
"Good to know." He brought one of his hands up and stroked her hair. Cid had always liked it, but had never dared to touch it before now. God damn it’s soft… "So, I guess it’s about time I started askin’ you about yourself."
"I think you know me fairly well," she replied, placing her hands upon his chest.
"Well, sure, I know some things about you after livin’ with you for all these years, but there’s a lot I don’t know." Cid switched his gaze from one of her eyes to the other. "Like…hell, I don’t even know your full name. You got a middle one?"
"Actually, Shera is my middle name." She turned away from Cid in order to make him a cup of tea, strictly out of habit. "They started calling me by it in school because there was another girl with my first name in my class. It just sort of…stuck."
He watched her move away, his eyes moving over her body. Was her waist always that fuckin’ small? Jesus, Joseph, and Mary… "So, what is it, then?"
"It’s stupid and I don’t really like it." Shera pulled a cup from the cabinet and set it down upon the counter. "But my full name is Sierra Shera Laughlin."
Cid couldn’t hold himself back and he moved forward, slipping his arms around her waist and pressing against her back. She’s wearing a corset under this. God damn, I love that kinda thing. "I don’t think it’s stupid at all. In fact, I think I kinda like it."
Feeling him against her as he was, Shera’s hands began to shake as she tried to pour the water from the teapot into the cup. "Y…you like it?"
He put his lips close to her ear and inhaled deeply before replying. Has she always smelled this good? "Yeah, I do. You sure are havin’ a hard time gettin’ that cup filled…"
She had to laugh quietly to herself. A shiver ran through her. "Yeah, but I figured that you’d want a cup of tea. You always do."
"Not today I don’t," he whispered back before letting his lips meet the union of her shoulder and neck.
Shera absolutely melted at the way he said that and she let her head lull back onto his shoulder. All thoughts of making tea were quickly lost. "Cid…"
In one swift move, Cid swept her up into his arms, causing her to squeal in surprise. He looked down into her eyes, once more wearing his smirk. "Shera…I wanna make the last few years up to you. I’ll give you anythin’ you want."
Staring back into his blue eyes, Shera asked for the only thing that she’d wanted at all since the day she’d met him. "I just want you, Cid."
As far as he was concerned, that was consent and he kissed her again, before carrying her toward his room. Once inside, he sat her down upon the edge of the bed, kneeling before her. He looked up into her eyes. "Uh…I’ve got somethin’ I wanna ask you before…well, before we go any further."
Shera cocked her head to the side, curious. Whatever it was, it seemed important to him. "What is it?"
The pilot felt a sweat break upon his skin, and his body began to shake as he reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out something black. He considered the sanity of what he was about to do for a moment and almost decided against it, but when he met her expectant gaze, he folded. Slowly, he brought up the little black box and held it up toward her, and flipped it open. It’s gonna serve me right when she starts laughin’ her ass of and tells me to go fuck myself…
But, she didn’t laugh-- not one bit.
Shera’s eyes went wide upon seeing the ring before her. She started to feel dizzy again. "Oh God, Cid…"
"I just was thinkin’ that if we’re gonna…I mean, I don’t want you to think that if we do somethin’ tonight that it’s just some fling or whatever, because it ain’t and I…" Cid cursed himself inwardly as his words failed him. He wasn’t coming off slick at all, and was already more than a little embarrassed about the entire situation.
Shera could see him struggling with himself, and decided to make it easier for him, hoping that she was interpreting the situation right. "Cid, if you’re asking me to…marry you, then I will."
Cid exhaled deeply, relieved that he’d been spared from doing the whole proposal thing properly. He hated that kind of crap. She said yes? After all the shit I’ve put her through, she’s sayin’ yes? "Fuckin’ A."
Familiar with the man after all the years she’d spent with him, Shera knew that he was entirely pleased. She dared to reach out and pull the ring free of the box. "Cid, it’s beautiful."
He hastily set the box down on the floor and then took the ring from her, taking her left hand up and slipping it on her finger. It seemed to fit just fine. "Thanks."
"No, Cid, thank you." Shera had tears in her eyes again, and this time did nothing to hold them back.
Upon seeing her tears, Cid moved to get up from the floor and sat next to her on the bed, then kissing her again.
Finally, life was getting back to normal and he couldn’t have been happier. Fate had decided to give Cid Highwind a break.
The End
A/N- Well, that’s it. I hope you really liked it and are all right with the ending. I’m pretty happy with it and I’m relieved to be done with it. Now, on with life. Is...is it sequel worthy? Hm...
