Chapter 21: Home Again?
"Are we there yet?" complained Yuffie as the buggy continued its journey.
"How old'r you?" asked Barret.
"Sixteen," Yuffie replied.
"Den act your age!" Barret snapped.
"Sephiroth doesn't have a buggy," Cloud informed her. "I have a feeling we'll get him before sundown."
Yuffie sighed. She was beginning to realize she had bitten off more than she could chew. She was considering ditching them, but the buggy was moving way too fast. She was stuck for now.
"What?!" exclaimed Tifa suddenly. "Cloud, pull over! I can't believe this!"
Cloud looked at what Tifa had noticed, and promptly complied.
Yuffie folded her arms. "Now what?"
Minutes later, they were all standing at the center of Nibelheim. The well was there. The buildings were there. Even the truck was there. There were no people, but the town looked just as it had been remembered.
"This was all supposed to be burnt down, right?" asked Tifa.
"I thought so," Cloud replied.
"You said it was burned down," added Barret.
"Cloud, did you lie to us?" asked Red XIII skeptically.
"My house is still there too," Tifa said. "But I remember the heat of the flames!"
"I'm not lying!" Cloud insisted in Red XIII's direction. "I remember the intense heat of the flames!"
Just then, Barret noticed them. Black creatures, roaming around the town. "I think I know who's here."
MORE MINUTES LATER….
Cloud found what, or rather whom, he had been looking for in the basement of the Shinra Mansion. "Sephiroth!" he exclaimed.
"Being here brings back memories," Sephiroth replied. "Are you going to participate in the reunion?"
"I don't even know what a reunion is!" Cloud exclaimed.
"Jenova will be at the reunion," Sephiroth replied. "Jenova will rejoin the reunion becoming a calamity from the skies."
"Jenova, a calamity from the skies?" asked Cloud. "You mean she wasn't an Ancient?"
"I see," Sephiroth replied. "I don't think you have the right to participate. I will go north past Mt. Nibel. If you wish to find out, then follow."
"Reunion?" asked Cloud, looking down. "Calamity from the skies?" When he looked up again, Sephiroth had gone.
Cloud looked down again. "He could have killed me right then and there," he said. "But he didn't. What could he want with me?"
When Cloud looked up the second time, he could see Barret and Tifa standing nearby.
"Guess what I found!" Barret announced.
"Sephiroth?" asked Cloud.
"Didn't see him," Barret replied as he showed him a key.
"What could that key be good for?" asked Cloud sarcastically.
In response, Barret pointed to the wall behind Cloud. There was a door. Without saying a word, Barret made his way to the door and unlocked it. "You're welcome," he said.
A foul smell greeted their noses as the door opened. "Jesus H. Christ!" exclaimed Barret. "I'm not going in there!"
"Suit yourself," said Tifa as she passed through the door.
"Wait!" exclaimed Cloud as he followed her.
Beyond the door appeared to be what fit the description of a morgue. There were several occupied body bags on gurneys. At the end of the room, there were several open coffins with rotting bodies.
"Well I guess that explains the stink," Cloud said.
"I wonder how they died," Tifa observed.
"Who knows," Cloud replied.
"Hey," Tifa suddenly exclaimed. "Look!" She pointed to one of the coffins. It was closed.
"I say we leave it be," Cloud suggested. "We won't find anything that interesting in there."
"We might," Tifa replied. "It's closed for a reason."
"And thus it should remain closed," Cloud insisted.
"All right," began Tifa. "Fifty gil says it isn't a zombie."
"Fine," Cloud muttered as he approached the coffin. Caustously, he removed the lid.
It was a man, dressed in red and black. He was lying still, but that was not attracted the visitors' attention. He show no signs of decomposition.
"Well," began Tifa. "He couldn't have died too long ago."
"So this place is still in use," Cloud said. "I think…."
He couldn't finish after he noticed it. Tifa noticed it too. The corpses eyes were moving rapidly. As if he was dreaming.
"Please tell me that's some sort of reflex action!" exclaimed Tifa.
"Probably," Cloud replied. "Watch this." With that, Cloud held the corpse's nose. There was no response. "Yep."
"Okay," said Tifa. "Let's get out of here."
The two turned their backs and began to leave.
"Who is it?" called a male voice.
Both Cloud and Tifa spun around in unison. They could see the man slowly sitting up and opening his eyes.
"Never seen you before," the man continued. "You must leave."
"You were having a nightmare," said Cloud. "I saw your eyes."
"How bad was your dream?" asked Tifa.
"A nightmare?" asked the man. "My long sleep has given me time to atone."
"What are you saying?" asked Cloud.
"I have nothing to say to strangers," replied the man. "Get out. This mansion is the beginning of your nightmare."
"You can say that again," Cloud told him. "I've been here and paid the consequences."
The man gave Cloud a look. As if he was becoming interested. "What do you know?"
"Like you said, this mansion is the beginning of a nightmare," continued Cloud. "No, it's not a dream, it's for real. Sephiroth has lost his mind. He found the secrets hidden in this mansion.
"Sephiroth!?" exclaimed the man as he climbed out of his coffin. "You know Sephiroth?"
"He was missing," Cloud said. "But he just recently reappeared. He has taken many lives and is seeking the Promised Land. Now it's your turn."
"Sorry," said the man. "I cannot speak."
"I'm disappointed," said Tifa.
"Hearing your stories has added upon me yet another sin," said the man as he climbed back into the coffin. "More nightmares shall come to me now, more than I previously had. Now please leave."
"Who are you?" asked Cloud. "At least tell us your name."
"I was with the Shinra Manufacturing Department in Administrative Research, otherwise known as the Turks," replied the man. "My name is Vincent Valentine."
"The Turks!?" exclaimed Cloud.
"Formerly of the Turks," Vincent corrected. "I have no affiliation with Shinra now. And you?"
"Former Shinra soldier, Cloud Strife."
"You were also with Shinra?" asked Vincent. "Then do you know Lucretia?"
"Who?"
"The woman who gave birth to Sephiroth."
"Gave birth?' asked Cloud. "I'm confused. Wasn't Jenova Sephiroth's mother?"
"That isn't completely wrong, but just a theory," replied Vincent. "He was born from a beautiful lady. That lady was Lucretia. She was an assistant to Professor Faremis of the Jenova Project. Beautiful Lucretia."
"A human experiment?" asked Cloud.
"There was no way to cancel the experiment," said Vincent. "I couldn't stop her. That was my sin. I let the one I loved, the one I respected most, face the worst."
"So the punishment was sleep?" asked Tifa. "That's weird."
"If I go with you will I meet Hojo?" asked Vincent, rather suddenly.
"Dunno," replied Cloud. "But we're after him and Sephiroth. So, I guess sooner or later."
"All right. I've decided to go with you." agreed Vincent.
"What? You're coming with us?" asked Tifa.
"Being a former Turk, I may be of help to you," said Vincent.
"All right, then," Cloud agreed as the three of them left the room.
"Whoa whoa whoa!" exclaimed Barret as he noticed Vincent. "How long was he in there?!"
"Good question," replied Cloud.
"But…is he alive or dead?!"
"Somewhere in between, I think," replied Tifa. "Let's go."
And then, Barret really lost it. "He's going to join us?!"
Cloud nodded.
"This corpse here?!"
"That corpse there," Cloud replied. "Oh, Tifa, you owe me fifty gil."
"Does he have to join us?" demanded Barret.
"YES!" Cloud and Tifa exclaimed in unison.
"We will get along," Vincent assured.
Barret grunted. "Kiss my black ass!"
ELSEWHERE….
"And you're positive that's where he's going?" asked Rufus from the toilet, his pants at his ankles.
"Positive," replied Hojo.
"You did your homework," Rufus complimented. "Of course, we'll have to pursue him. Crossing the ocean will prove way to slow."
"How do you propose we follow him?" asked Hojo.
"Sephiroth will be on foot," Rufus answered. "He'll have land obstacles. What if we were to avoid land altogether?"
"I'm not following you," Hojo said.
"I think I need to pay a visit to an old friend," Rufus announced. "And I'll be taking Palmer."
Hojo sighed. "HIM?!"
"He's got a plane," Rufus insisted. "We could use it. We need a backup in case the Shinra 2000 fails us."
SOMEWHERE ELSE….
"Why didn't you kill anyone?" asked Nara as the two of them left Gongaga.
"Because nothing could make those people any more miserable," Bestla replied.
"Why didn't you torch the town?" Nara then asked.
"Because nothing could make that town look any worse," Bestla insisted. "Anything else you'd like to ask?"
Nara was silent.
"Go on," Bestla insisted. "Ask away."
"What do you need the Black Materia for?" Nara asked.
Bestla grinned. "You might be a little young to remember the Meteor Incident."
"I remember that pretty well," Nara said.
"Do you remember why Sephiroth summoned it?"
Nara shook her head.
"He had a theory," Bestla continued. "When the meteor hit, the planet would gather Lifestream at the point of impact. Sephiroth's plan was to absorb it and become a god."
"Okay," said Nara. "That makes sense."
"Now," continued Bestla, "suppose I killed Sephiroth and took the Black Materia? What if I summoned Meteor? And what if I absorbed the Lifestream?"
"Then you would become a goddess," Nara replied.
"Exactly," Bestla said. "And the world would be mine!"
