“I’m so nervous.” Serah confessed to Noel as their train arrived at their destination.
“Don’t be.” Noel said to her he put his arm around her and pulled her closer, kissing her forehead. “Everything is going to be fine. I’ll be with you.”
“What if he gets mad? I don’t want to hurt him.” She said as she began to pick at her nails.
“Then we will deal with it but stop over thinking. You’re going to rip off your nails.” He joked as he placed his hand on hers to calm her.
“But what if…” She started to speak but Noel silenced her by kissing her.
“Just breathe.” He said calmly as their train came to a stop. “This is us. Let’s go.”
Her exhaled heavily as she stood, stepping out in front of Noel as they made their way to the doors. Her stomach was in knots but this reunion was important. She had to see him. She had to see Snow.
As they walked along the busy beach sidewalk, Serah became overwhelmed with nostalgia. Everything about this small village reminded her of New Bodhum. The people, the music, the houses…
“Where did Vanille say we had to go?” Noel asked her as he looked at a local map he got from the train station.
“She just said I’d know it when I saw it.” She shrugged.
“Very helpful.” He said sarcastically as he folded the map up and put it in his pocket.
He could sense her nerves were jumping all over the place so he took her hand in his and kissed her. Serah smiled. She knew he was trying his hardest to keep her calm but nothing seemed to be helping. However, she loved how hard he was trying. It made her heart float with happiness. She knew she loved him and nothing would change that.
As they neared the end of the sidewalk, her heart nearly fell to her feet. Noel’s did, too. This little village looked almost identical to New Bodhum. They were here.
“This is it.” Serah said as she tried to calm her anxiety. “He should be here.”
They walked around for a few minutes, taking in the scenery. The beach was filled with locals playing games and preparing fire pits for the night’s festivities. However, one building caught her eye. It was the village bar and grill. Almost exactly the way Lebreau used to describe her dream business.
She knew Snow was somewhere around here but she wasn’t prepared for the rest of her old friends to be here. Vanille didn’t prepare her for that but, she couldn’t be mad. Vanille had very little interaction with them prior to being turned into crystal so long ago.
“I…don’t know if I can do this, Noel.” Serah admitted as she turned her back to the beach. “We were told to be careful what we say and, if it had just been Snow, that would be easy but…something tells me he isn’t alone.”
“Let’s just go and order something to eat. We don’t need to interact with everyone.” He calmly suggested as he hugged her tight. Her body was shaking. He hated seeing her so nervous.
He placed his hand on the side of her face, brushing her hair from her eyes and tucking it behind her ears. He flashed her a confident smile as she nodded in agreement.
When they entered, she nervously searched the room for anyone from her old life. She didn’t even hear Noel ask for a table. She just followed his lead.
“See,” He whispered as they sat down and politely took the menus from their waitress. “That wasn’t so hard.”
She smiled and nodded, pretending to be looking at the menu but her mind was anywhere but there.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash that brought her back to reality once more. They both looked around to find the source.
“Damnit!” A loud female voice yelled as she frantically searched for a broom. “Gadot! I told you not to let the kids play over here. I tripped on their damn toys!”
Serah’s eyes widened as she saw Lebreau and Gadot at the end of the bar cleaning up the broken glass. She grabbed Noel’s hand as her heart almost beat out of her chest.
“They’re…here.” Her voice was almost a whisper as she fought back tears. “Noel…”
Noel smiled at her as he tried to think of a logical way to approach them to see if they had their memories back like Noel and Serah did. He knew Serah couldn’t bring herself to do it alone so it was up to him. In a panic, he knocked his glass off the table causing it to break.
“Noel! What are you doing?” Serah asked as she hid her face behind the menu out of embarrassment.
Noel just smiled as he noticed Gadot hurrying to their table with a broom.
“I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened, man.” Noel said quickly as he helped pick up the larger pieces.
“It’s okay, man. It hap-“ Gadot’s sentence stopped as he dropped the broom and dust pan. “Noel…” He quickly turned to notice the pink haired girl sitting with him hiding behind a menu. “S-Serah?!”.
She dropped the menu when she heard him say her name. He remembered her. He remembered both of them. Her bright blue eyes filling with tears as Gadot wrapped his giant arms around her and spun her around the room.
“Babe! COME HERE!” Gadot yelled to Lebreau. He couldn’t put her down and, honestly, she didn’t want him to. She missed him. She missed all of them.
“Why are you yelling?” Lebreau said harshly as she approached the table to see her husband hugging a tiny woman. She looked over at Noel and back at her husband and the girl he was embracing. “Oh my God…Noel! SERAH!” She shrieked as she quickly hugged Noel.
Gadot finally put Serah down after Lebreau punched him in the side.
“Serah I can’t believe you’re here!” Lebreau cried as she hugged her old friend.
“I can’t believe you remember us.” Noel’s voice was filled with relief.
“Yeah, most of our memories came back a few months ago but,” Gadot pointed to the little kids sitting in a booth coloring outside. “We can’t exactly go on adventures these days. We just hoped you guys would find your way out here.”
“They’re adorable.” Serah smiled as she watched them. “I’m so happy for you both.” Her voice was shaky and her eyes were red from crying.
“Sit down. Let me go get us something to drink and we can all catch up, okay?” Lebreau said as she happily ran off behind the bar.
Gadot pulled over two more chairs and sat next to Noel. His smile alone could have lit up the bar. He was so happy to see his old friends.
“So, are you two…?” Gadot asked awkwardly insinuating they were a couple.
“Yes,” Serah answered with a laugh. “We’re together.”
“That’s fucking awesome!” Lebreau exclaimed as she returned to the table.
“Mommy!” Taliah yelled from across the room as she pointed to a clearly labeled ‘swear jar’ that sat on the edge of the bar.
“Sorry, baby. You’re right.” She pulled a dollar out and placed it on the table for Taliah to add to it.
The little girl ran over and snatched the dollar as she shamed her mother, laughing as she ran off to the jar.
Lebreau rolled her eyes and laughed, too.
“Your jar looks pretty full.” Noel joked as he took a sip of his beer.
“We’re not usually that bad. It’s Snow that is…” Gadot’s eyes widened. “Oh my God. Snow.”
“I-Is he here?” Serah asked as she felt her stomach tying in knots again as she waited for his answer.
“Actually, no. He’s not. He left a couple weeks ago to look for you and Lightning.” His voice grew softer.
“Did he find her?!” Serah asked, excited.
“Maybe? I really don’t know. Most of his leads have ended up being dead ends. We figured he’d be back by now, honestly.” Lebreau answered while she poured herself a drink.
“Yeah, he met up with Fang and Vanille and snatched Fang’s journal. He studied the hell out of it trying to force back his memories but nothing was working. He just knew of you and Light and that he had to find you both.” Gadot took a drink of his beer as his eyes wandered to his kids, making sure they weren’t far from where they were supposed to be.
“Is he…okay? Mentally, I mean.” Noel asked them knowing that forcing memories back into place could be bad.
“Oh, yeah. He’s still Snow. He remembers Serah. He remembers being engaged and the stuff that followed but…” He cleared his throat as he tried to avoid that discussion. “Fang told him not to worry about you. That you were safe.” He looked over at Noel and thanked him with a smile.
“So,” Serah paused to search for the words. “He’s looking for Light because…he remembers he loves her?” The question made everyone feel on edge.
“He never really said. All he said was that he made her a promise and he had to keep it.” Lebreau said with a heavy sigh. “There was a lot that went on that we weren’t aware of, Serah. A lot between the two of them.”
Serah quickly realized that they were trying to find an easy way to soften the blow for her and interrupted her.
“Oh, no. I know about their relationship. Vanille told me a long time ago. I’m not mad. I think, deep down, I knew the last time I saw Snow that something was going on. Something bigger than even Light.” She smiled at them both as she reached for Noel’s hand. “I found my happy ending and I’m not going to apologize for that. They shouldn’t have to, either.”
“This new life looks good on you, Serah.” Lebreau complimented her as she winked at Noel. Serah blushed and laughed nervously.
“I’m just happy we’re all together again. Well,” Gadot’s voice grew serious. “Most of us are here.”
“He will be back and he will bring Lightning with him. Those two have been through hell and managed to find each other every time.” Lebreau said with a confident smile. “She brought him back from becoming Cie’th. It’s his turn to find her.”
The rest of the night was full of stories of their pasts and their futures. They moved outside to the hammocks around a fire pit and laughed all night. Serah had her legs across Noel’s lap as they slowly swung back and forth in one of the hammocks. She had finally been relaxed enough to fall asleep. Gadot noticed and went to their house and grabbed some blankets. He carefully covered her up as not to wake her and gave the other to Noel.
“She’s really happy with you, man.” Gadot told Noel as he gently woke Lebreau up to take her and the kids home. “Thank you for keeping her safe.”
Noel smiled as he placed his hand on her upper thigh and admired how beautiful she was while she slept. “She’s the one who kept me safe. Without her watching over me all those years ago, I probably wouldn’t be here now.”
“If she wakes up and you guys want to come inside, we’ll set the guest room up for you.” Lebreau said quietly as she picked up Kai and started walking to their house. Gadot lifted Taliah and waved good night to Noel.
He watched them as their small family headed home. Today was an amazing day. One of his favorite days. Not only were they reunited with old friends they never thought they’d see again but, for the first time since they started dating, Serah made it clear to him that she wasn’t leaving. No matter what. She really did love him and it was the first time in either life where he felt true love.
