Chapter 25: The Temple of the Ancients
Cloud awoke. He found himself laying on his back, gazing at a ceiling with a lot of creepy stuff. He realized that today was the day. They would go to the Temple of the Ancients, retrieve the Black Materia, and then….
Cloud looked downward at the beautiful girl in the white tank top. She was on her side, snuggled against him, with her right arm across his bare chest. He wondered what would become of them after it was all said and done. Would they break up after dating for a while? Would they get married and have kids?
And then, the ugly feeling came again. That something was about to happen to her.
And then, her emerald eyes opened. She quickly kissed him. "Good morning," she said groggily.
"How are you?" asked Cloud.
"I could use a shower," Aerith said.
"You ready?" he asked.
"For what?"
"The Temple," Cloud replied.
"That's today, isn't it?" Aerith asked.
"It is," Cloud replied.
Aerith nuzzled her head into Cloud again. "I almost don't want to get up," she said lovingly. "I'm too content like this."
"Once this is over," said Cloud, "we'll have plenty of time for it."
"You're right," agreed Aerith as she reluctantly got up out of bed and made her way to the bathroom.
Cloud gazed briefly; he had nearly forgotten she was naked from the waist down.
Aerith stopped, and looked towards Cloud.
"Aren't you joining me?"
"I suppose," Cloud playfully groaned as he got up out of bed and began to follow her into the bathroom.
"Hey!" Aerith exclaimed.
"What?" asked Cloud.
"You're too slow!" Aerith replied as she grabbed his arm and marched him straight into the shower. She quickly turned the shower water on, causing it to rain gently on both of them. Wasting no time, Aerith placed her hands on Cloud's shoulders and began to kiss him deeply.
The water began to drench Aerith's shirt, causing it to stick to her body. Cloud found it extremely sexy, but he didn't get to enjoy the view, as they kept kissing passionately.
"Put your hands on my butt," Aerith suddenly commanded.
Cloud eagerly did as he was told.
With that, she lifted herself up and wrapped her legs around Cloud's waist.
"Didn't see that coming, did you," Aerith said with a seductive smile.
Cloud shook his head. "And now I suppose you're gonna have sex with me?"
"Hold it," said Aerith as she reached behind. "Need to take this stupid shirt off!" She pulled the tank top over her head and dropped it onto the shower floor.
"Okay," she said. "Now I'm gonna have sex with you."
And then, without warning, Aerith lowered her vagina onto Cloud's erect penis, and began to thrust.
"Oh, shit!" she immediately began to moan before pressing her lips against his.
LATER…
Aerith had put on the pink dress she had met Cloud in. When Cloud and Aerith finally made their way down the stairs, they realized everyone had gathered in the lobby.
"What took you so long, Cloud?" asked Cait Sith. "Oh yeah, about the Temple of the Ancients. I think if we take the Tiny Bronco east towards the sea, we should be able to find it. Well then, shall we get goin'? Who's gonna go?"
"I want to go!" announced Aerith. "I'm going for sure!"
THAT AFTERNOON….
The nine of them rode the Tiny Bronco along the coastline as they viewed the endless grassland. Aerith was looking forward more so than anyone else, hoping to see their destination.
Cloud and Tifa exchanged one awkward glance. Neither would mention their "date" the previous night, realizing it would be best for it to be kept between the two of them. They both knew it would eventually need to be resolved, but for now their concern was saving the world.
Gradually, lush vegetation began to come into view. Before they realized it, they were standing at the boundary of a jungle. A sole dirt path led inside.
"The Temple's in there," Aerith said.
"Are you sure?" asked Cloud.
"I feel it," she insisted.
"But there might be lions in there!" Yuffie exclaimed. She then turned her head and realized she was making eye contact with Red XIII. "No offense," she added.
Red XIII showed his fangs. "None taken," he replied sarcastically.
A moment later, they were making their way inside the jungle. They remained along the path, and noticed the jungle was brimming with life. There were monkeys and toucans in almost every tree. In the distance, Vincent could see a family of gorillas. It was a forgotten paradise.
And then, the mood was ruined.
"I see footprints," Barret said. "Two large ones and two small ones."
"Turks," Vincent said.
"How can you tell?" asked Red XIII.
"Those smaller prints were made by a woman in men's shoes," he said.
"Those probably belong to Elena," Tifa said. "Whoever made the larger ones is anyone's guess."
After an hour, they arrived. Before them stood a tall, golden pyramid. No lush vegetation grew near it. No fauna ventured near it, either. There was most definitely an ominous vibe.
"This is the Temple of the Ancients," said Aerith.
"Are you sure?" asked Cloud.
"I know," Aerith replied. "I feel it." She then lay down and put her ear to the ground. "The knowledge of the Ancients….floating...you could become one with the Planet, but you're stopping it with the strength of will. For the future? For us?"
"What are you saying?" asked Cloud. "Do you understand?"
"You're uneasy, but happy?" Aerith continued. "Because I'm here? I'm sorry. I don't understand."
Aerith then got up and shook her head. "I want to go inside!" she announced as she ran over to Cloud.
He nodded. "Let's go."
"Wait!" warned Red XIII. "Shinra troops might be around here."
"And they might try to trap us in the temple," Vincent added.
"I'd rather not be attacked in a closed space," Yuffie said. "Not after last night."
"Understood," Cloud agreed. "We'll have some of us outside and some of us inside."
"I'm votin' for outside," Barret said.
"Alright," Cloud said. "Barret can stay outside. I'll take Aerith, Cait Sith, and Cid in."
"Figures," Yuffie whispered with her arms folded.
"What?" whispered Red XIII.
"I can't believe he hasn't knocked her up," Yuffie muttered.
"That's not why he's taking her in there," Tifa insisted as the chosen four made their way towards the temple. "He's taking Aerith because her ancestors built the temple. He's taking Cait Sith because he doesn't trust him. And he's taking Cid because…well, I don't know why he's taking Cid, but…"
"You have feelings for him," Yuffie interrupted.
"Excuse me?"
"It's so obvious we can all tell," Yuffie insisted.
"He's an old friend," Tifa said. "Nothing more."
Meanwhile, Cloud, Aerith, Cid, and Cait Sith made their way up the stairs. When they got to the top, they noticed a dying clone.
"Keystone," it whispered. "Open...the door...of the temple..."
Cloud bent down and checked his pulse. "Those were his last words," he said.
"Look," said Aerith pointing to his limp arm. A tattoo. Number nine!"
"Well," said Cid, "now there's one less of these motherfuckers around."
Meanwhile, Aerith wandered inside. "Hey!" exclaimed Aerith. "It's Tseng!" Her voice sounded somewhat distressed.
"Tseng? Of the Turks!?"
Cloud rushed through the doorway. A sorrowful sight greeted his eyes. Tseng was slumped near the alter, with a stain of blood ruining his blue suit.
"I've been had," he groaned. "It's not the Promised Land... Sephiroth's searching for..."
"Sephiroth?" exclaimed Cloud. "He's inside!?"
"Look...for yourself..." groaned Tseng as he pounded the floor with his fist. "Damn! Letting Aerith go was the start...of my...bad luck. The president... was wrong..."
"You're wrong," Aerith snapped. "The Promised Land isn't like what you imagined. And I'm not going to help. Either way, there was no way Shinra could have won."
"Pretty harsh," sighed Tseng. Sounds like something...you'd say."
Cloud, meanwhile, spotted the keystone under Tseng's right arm.
"The keystone...place it...on...the altar..." And then, Tseng rested his head. All was still.
Cloud then noticed that a tear had escaped Aerith's left eye. "You crying?" he asked.
"Tseng's with our enemy, the Turks, but I've known him since we were little," Aerith replied. "There's not a lot of people I can say that about. In fact, there are probably only a handful of people in the world who really know me."
"I understand," said Cloud, thinking of Tifa. "But we do need to stop Sephiroth."
"Of course," Aerith agreed.
Cloud picked up the keystone and placed it on the altar. A moment later, he, Aerith, Cait Sith, and Cid sank into the ground.
And then, with the greatest of ease, Tseng got up and walked away.
INSIDE THE TEMPLE….
Cloud, Aerith, Cait Sith, and Cid rose through the floor. Each of them was amazed at what they saw. Before them was what seemed like and endless maze of stairways. Nobody had seen such a place in centuries.
"Words...feelings..." began Aerith. "So many of them here."
"Wow, this place is huge!" exclaimed Cait Sith. "I'm starting to get bored."
Cloud, meanwhile, looked behind himself. The exit had vanished. "We're trapped," he said.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" exclaimed Cid. "What the hell's with this place?"
"I don't know," Cloud replied. "I'm wondering how we're going to find our way through this maze!"
"Cloud!" began Aerith, ignoring their profane companion. "I know it's going to be tough, but don't give up! We can do it!"
"Look!" interrupted Cait Sith.
Just a few feet away stood an odd creature. Nobody, not even Aerith, could describe it. It looked almost like an anthropomorphic elephant wearing a hat. As if it could have been related to Cait Sith.
"Excuse us," greeted Aerith. "Is this your home?"
In response, the creature turned and ran off.
"Wait!" Aerith exclaimed.
"Let's follow it!" ordered Cloud.
The four of them followed in pursuit. The creature made every effort to escape, but it wasn't fast. After a quick five-minute chase, it was cornered in smaller chamber.
"Nyum, nyum," said the creature.
"Whew!" exclaimed Aerith. "We finally caught up to you."
"Nyum, nyum," the creature repeated.
"I'm sorry," said Aerith. "You waited for me."
"You know this thing?" asked Cid.
"Those are the spirit bodies of the Ancients," Aerith explained. "They've been away from their planet for a long time to protect this temple. Over the many years, they've lost the ability to talk. Actually, they didn't need words from the beginning because there was only one objective for those left in the temple." She then turned toward the creature. "Please, talk to me!"
"Nyum, nyum," said the creature.
"No good," sighed Aerith. "I don't understand the rest. Are you afraid? Is it because Sephiroth is in the temple? Or something else?"
The creature pointed in the far direction.
They follow a second spirit body into a room farther down, and it sets off a trap of odd-shaped boulders. Once they make it past, the trap deactivates.
"Phew," sighed Aerith as she threw her arms around Cloud from behind him. "We did it!"
"Everyone all right?" asked Cloud. "That sure took a lot out of us."
And then, there was a brief, white flash.
"Oh no!" Aerith gasped. "Cloud. Come quick! Hurry, this way!"
She led Cloud, Cid, and Cait Sith into the next room, where a glowing pool waited for them.
"What's this?" asked Cloud.
"It's full of the knowledge of the Ancients," Aerith replied. "No, not knowledge. Consciousness. A living soul. It's trying to say something." She leaned in. "I'm sorry, I don't understand. What? What is it? Danger? An evil consciousness? You're going to show me?"
"What's going on?" asked Cloud.
"Wait! Look!" exclaimed Aerith. "It's showing us!"
As she spoke, a scene materialized in the pool. It was in a room with a mural. Two individuals were there, and they were immediately recognized.
"Tseng, what's this?" asked Elena. "Can we find the Promised Land with this?"
"I wonder," replied Tseng. "Anyway, we have to report to the president."
"Be careful, Tseng," warned Elena.
Aerith somewhat felt sorry for Elena. She liked him; it was so obvious anyone could tell.
"Hey Elena," Tseng began suddenly, "How about dinner after this job's over?"
Elena began to blush. "Thank you very much. If I may be excused."
Tseng nodded as Elena left the room.
"Is this the Promised Land?" asked Tseng to himself. "No, it can't be."
"Far from it," spoke a voice that all four of them recognized.
Soon, a figure with familiar long, silver hair approached TURK4 from the foreground.
"Sephiroth!" exclaimed Tseng.
"So you opened the door," Sephiroth observed aloud. "Well done."
"This place...what is it?" asked Tseng.
"A lost treasure house of knowledge," Sephiroth replied. "The wisdom of the Ancients. I am becoming one with the Planet."
"One with the Planet?" asked the perplexed Tseng.
"You stupid fools," Sephiroth grunted. "You have never even thought about it. All the spirit energy of this Planet. All its wisdom….knowledge...I will meld with it all. I will become one with it... it will become one with me."
Tseng, meanwhile, seemed frightened, but did his best to hide it. He closed his eyes, and Aerith wondered if he was casting some sort of spell.
"You can do that?" Tseng asked.
"The way lies here!" Sephiroth yelled as he charged towards the poor Turk, driving his sword through him as he did.
Tseng collapsed to the ground and doubled over.
"Only death awaits you all," Sephiroth continued. "But do not fear. For it is through death that a new spirit energy is born. Soon, you will live again as a part of me."
Sephiroth then dashed away from anyone's view.
Tseng lay motionless on the floor for several minutes. And then, completely unexpectedly, he sat up. Five seconds later, he rose to his feet and dusted himself off. He seemed perfectly okay.
"What the hell's going on?!" exclaimed the shocked Aerith.
Cloud was somewhat appalled. Aerith never swore, except the frequent 'oh shit' during intimacy. "I don't know," he replied.
And then, Tseng turned, and seemed to disappear into the wall.
"Please tell me I'm not hallucinating!" Aerith exclaimed. "Did you just see that?"
"Is he a ghost or something?" asked Cid.
"Not that I know of!" Aerith replied. "I'm certain he's still alive!"
"There has to be an explanation for this," Cait Sith pointed out.
"Maybe the walls are fake?" Cloud suggested.
"The how the fuck did he take a sword through his body and then just get up like nothing happened?" Cid demanded.
"I don't know," Aerith replied. "But that's one incredible trick I'd certainly like to learn."
"Where is the room with the pictures on the walls?" asked Cloud.
"Almost there," Aerith replied.
"Sephiroth is here, right?" Cloud inferred. "No matter what he thinks, it's going to end here. I'm taking him out!"
"I wonder if he'll go down that easy?" mentioned Cait Sith.
"All right!" Cid yelled. "Guess you youngsters gotta be enthusiastic like that!"
The next room was round, with what seemed like a clock on the floor. Below that clock was, with anyone's guess, a bottomless pit. There were twelve doorways; one for each hour.
"What kind of room is this?" asked Cait Sith aloud.
"I am the Time Guardian," a voice suddenly called, causing all four of them to jump in unison. "Ye who seek the knowledge of the Ancients. I control the time, select your path."
"I think it's some kind of recording," Aerith said.
"Well, it scared the shit out of me," Cid muttered.
"What scares the shit out of me is that our options are limited," Cloud said.
"What do you mean?" asked Cait Sith.
"Look at the doorways," Cloud replied. "We've got three blocked by rubble."
"What about that one?" asked Cait Sith. "By the twelve?"
Cloud attempted to open the door, but to no avail. "It's locked," he said.
Meanwhile, Aerith began to make her way through the six door.
"Hey!" shouted Cait Sith. "Where are you going?"
"It's like she's in a trance," Cid observed. "I could probably grab her pussy and she wouldn't even notice."
"Ew!" Aerith exclaimed as she turned around to give Cid a disgusted look.
"Not cool, Cid," warned Cloud.
"What?" asked Cid innocently. "It's just locker room talk!"
Beyond the six doorway was a room with three levels. There were doorways on each level, but the one that got everyone's attention was the one at the top. It was decorated, suggesting it lead somewhere important.
And then, another elephant creature appeared through the doors. The doors closed again, and a clicking sound followed.
"Hey you!" Cid shouted. "Did you lock it?!"
In response, the creature ran to the side of the room. Cornered, it cowered in its position.
Aerith quickly made her way to the top level and tried, unsuccessfully, to open the door.
"No good," she said. "It's locked."
"Figures," Cloud muttered.
"It'll all be over soon," Aerith assured him. "Just hang in there. Someday we'll look back at these hard times and laugh."
"Hey, look!" Cait Sith exclaimed.
On the floor was a key. The creature seemed to have dropped it.
Cautiously, Cloud picked up the key. He placed it into the lock. Sure enough, the door opened.
The next room was what they had been looking for.
"This is the room with the murals," Aerith said. "Tseng?!" she suddenly called out. "Where are you hiding?"
Meanwhile, the other three had their interests focused on the murals. There were seven of them. The first showed people standing outside a building that Cloud immediately recognized as the Temple of the Ancients.
The second mural featured people walking in the same direction, leading Aerith to presume it was some kind of religious ritual.
The third mural depicted people surrounding an altar. Cid realized it was the same one in that very room.
The fourth mural had people surrounding a table with two jars on it.
The fifth mural featured a woman holding a dark black orb. A giant, spherical body was falling from the sky.
The sixth mural featured people facing all directions, as if they were confused or frightened.
Finally, there was the seventh mural. People were standing there screaming. And they were engulfed in flames.
"What the fuck is this?!" Cid exclaimed.
"Some kind of disguised clue?" suggested Cloud.
"It's a warning," Aerith replied. "Not to summon Meteor."
"So that's what that asshole wants to do," Cid growled. "He wants to kill everybody!"
"Every last thing on the Planet!" Cait Sith added.
"I won't have it!" Cloud exclaimed. "Where are you!? Sephiroth!"
"Look!" Aerith exclaimed.
Sephiroth seemed to suddenly appear right in front of a mural. "Splendid. A treasure house of knowledge."
"I don't understand what you're saying!" said Cloud.
"Look well," Sephiroth ordered.
"At what!?"
"At that which adds to the knowledge of," Sephiroth replied as he pointed to the seventh mural. "I am becoming one with the Planet."
He then went to the altar and sat down. "Mother, it's almost time. Soon, we will become one."
"How do you intend to become one with the Planet?" demanded Aerith as she raised her fists.
In response, Sephiroth stood up and drew his sword and aimed it at Aerith. "It's simple," he responded. "Once the planet is hurt, it gathers spirit energy to heal the injury. The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury."
He then drove the sword into the ground.
Aerith leapt back in surprise.
"What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet?" Sephiroth continued. "Think how much energy would be gathered! And at the center of that injury, will be me. All that boundless energy will be mine. By merging with all the energy of the Planet, I will become a new life form, a new existence. Melding with the Planet, I will cease to exist as I am now, only to be reborn as a god to rule over every soul."
"An injury powerful enough to destroy the Planet?" asked Aerith. "Injure the Planet?"
"Behold that mural," Sephiroth replied. "The ultimate destructive magic. Meteor!"
"I won't allow it!" Aerith shouted.
Sephiroth quickly drew his sword out of the floor and aimed it at Aerith again. "If you interfere with me," he warned, "I will kill you!"
And with, Sephiroth practically flew away.
"That'll never happen!" Cloud insisted as he began to run after him. "Where are you!? Sephiroth!"
"Wait, Cloud!" pleaded Aerith as she began to follow. And then she saw him stop, and slowly turn to face the seventh mural. And then, she watched in horror as his body began to shake.
"Cloud!" Aerith cried again.
"What's wrong with you!?" asked Cait Sith.
And then, Cloud began to laugh. And it was an evil, nasty, laugh.
"What the hell is going on!" Cid demanded.
"Black Materia," Cloud cackled. "Call Meteor."
"Cloud!" Aerith exclaimed. "Get a hold of yourself!"
Cloud ceased laughing. Instead, he started to grab his head. It almost seemed as if he was in pain.
"Cloud…I'm Cloud…how should I...I remember! I remember my way."
He let go of his head and turned to Aerith.
"Cloud," she said as she ran over and kissed him.
"What's wrong?" asked Cloud. "Is something wrong?"
"It's nothing," Aerith replied. "So don't worry about it. Right, Cloud? It's nothing."
Cait Sith shrugged his shoulders and Cid scratched his head in confusion.
"Sephiroth got away," Aerith continued.
"Don't worry about it," Cloud replied as he turned to the seventh mural. "I understood what he was saying. So this must be Meteor, right?"
The flames on the mural were still engulfing the people there.
"Then, we got trouble," said Cait Sith. "Oh, so something's going to fall from the sky? It's going to be something big."
"This must be magic," Aerith observed. "Just what Sephiroth was saying. The ultimate destructive magic, Meteor. It finds small drifting planets with its magic. And then collides with them. This planet might get wiped out entirely."
"So this is the end of the world?" asked Cait Sith.
"Pretty much so," Aerith replied.
"So if Sephiroth gets his way," Cid added, "we're all fucked."
Suddenly, the floor began to shake.
"Sephiroth!?" demanded Cloud.
Sephiroth's voice responded in evil laughter. "It's not me."
And then, a monster burst through the floor. It was large and reptilian, and had wings. Cloud could only describe it as a dragon.
Wasting no time, it drew its head back, ready to prove its identity.
"Run!" Cloud shouted as the four of them did so in all directions.
The dragon spewed hot, bluish-white fire before it caught sight of a cornered, potential victim. Aerith.
The dragon began to advance on her.
Aerith armed her staff, though she knew it was no good. There were no sharp edges.
The dragon reared its head back again, ready to incinerate her.
"Cloud…" Aerith began.
"Yoo-hoo!" Cid suddenly shouted. "Hey, fuck face!"
The dragon immediately turned towards Cid. It reared its head.
And Cid threw his spear directly into its heart.
The dragon stomped around in pain briefly before lying on its side. It closed its eyes, and its chest ceased to rise.
Cloud went up to the dragon to check. "It's an ex-dragon now," he informed everyone.
And then, Aerith ran up behind Cloud, wrapped her arms around his torso, and rested her head on his back.
"I'm scared, Cloud," she whispered.
"For us?" he asked as he felt her body shake.
"No," Aerith replied. "For the Planet."
