Chapter 26: Deeper Into the Temple
Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Vincent continued to keep vigil outside the temple. They were all keeping their eyes peeled for Turks. So far, everything was clear.
"They're sure taking their sweet time in there," Barret observed.
"I just hope they're okay," Tifa said. "I hope it's not full of booby traps."
Yuffie started to giggle. "Booby," she laughed.
"Grow up," commanded Red XIII.
"Sorry," Yuffie apologized. "I just needed to laugh. I feel like that attack in my room last night was another nail in my coffin."
"Look!" exclaimed Tifa suddenly.
"What?" asked Red XIII.
"It's Tseng!" Tifa replied. "He's coming out of the temple wall!"
Barret turned to see Tseng appearing just as Tifa had described.
"Hey you!" he shouted.
"You're behind your friends," Tseng informed him.
Barret aimed his gun-arm at Tseng and cocked it.
"I just walked through a brick wall," Tseng said. "You really think shooting at me's going to do any good?
"What do you know about them?" Red XIII demanded.
"I just saw them go in," Tseng said. "That's all."
"I don't believe that for a minute," Tifa dismissed.
"Why don't you go in and see for yourself?" Tseng suggested with a smirk. "Maybe you'll get to Cloud just in time to watch him die!"
That did it for one of them.
"You asshole!" shouted Yuffie as she charged at Tseng. Leaping into the air, she pointed her left foot at Tseng's face. Unfortunately, she flew right through his body, landing hardly on the ground.
"Another nail in my coffin," Yuffie groaned.
"You want to capture me?" asked Tseng. "When your friends are inside that temple with Sephiroth?"
"Sephiroth is in there?!" Tifa exclaimed.
"You bet your cute little ass," Tseng replied. "You really thought I was trying to intimidate you?" With that, he turned to face a giant tree and began to walk toward it. "I'm a professional assassin," he said as he disappeared into the tree.
Yuffie got herself to her feet and rejoined the others.
"I've expected a lot of crazy shit," Barret began, "but not the ghost of Tseng!"
"Hmmm…I always thought he was still alive," Tifa said. "There has to be some sort of explanation for that."
"Maybe phase materia?" Yuffie suggested.
"Never heard of it," Barret dismissed.
"It renders you out of phase," Yuffie said.
Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, and Vincent looked at Yuffie as if she had twenty heads.
"It makes you untouchable," Yuffie continued. "You know, it's kind of sad I'm the youngest one here and I'm the only one who knows this."
"Nobody knows everything," Vincent said.
"Actually," Yuffie began, "has anyone ever heard of Holy?"
"I'm afraid not," Tifa replied.
"Don't ring a bell," Barret added.
"Where did you hear of it?" asked Red XIII.
"That bitch who attacked me in my room last night," Yuffie continued. "She was accusing me of summoning something called Holy. But I've never heard of such a thing in my life."
And then, Tifa began to head toward the temple.
"Yo!" called out Barret. "Where'r you goin'?"
"Sephiroth is in there!" Tifa exclaimed. "And if he finds them, he'll kill them!"
"Hold it!" insisted Red XIII as he darted in front of Tifa and blocked her path. "We know Shinra is around here, too. They're willing to kill them as much as Sephiroth is!"
"Yeah!" added Yuffie. "Sephiroth is just one man. There are at least four Turks. If Tseng is around here, Reno, Rude, and Elena gotta be too!"
"Tifa," began Vincent. "You need to relax."
"I can't," Tifa insisted.
"Cloud can take care of himself," said Vincent. "I know you have feelings for him, and I actually believe you're a better match for him than Aerith. But you have to trust him to watch himself."
Tifa sighed. "He's just an old friend."
"Believe me," continued Vincent, "I can tell. I may be a zombie, but I'm not stupid."
MEANWHILE, INSIDE THE TEMPLE….
Cloud desperately looked around the room. He felt Aerith still clutching him, and he saw Cait Sith and Cid standing nearby. No one else.
"Any sign of Sephiroth?" asked Cloud.
"He disappeared," Aerith replied.
Cloud then noticed that the creature had closed and locked the door they had come through.
"We're locked in," Cloud said.
"Great," muttered Cid. "Now what?"
"Maybe there's a switch at the altar?" Aerith suggested.
"It's worth a try," Cait Sith agreed.
Cloud approached the altar. It contained a miniature model of the temple. And then, he noticed it.
"What is this?" Cloud asked ominously.
"There's something written on it," Aerith replied. "B-L-A-C-K M-A-T-E-R-I-A."
"Black Materia!" Cloud exclaimed.
"That's the Black Materia?" exclaimed Cid. "I can think of at least two things wrong with that name!"
"What should we do, Cloud?"
"It's attached to the temple," Cloud replied. "It doesn't look like it can be moved."
"Wait a minute," said Aerith. "I'll ask!"
She ran to the center of the room and began to look around.
"I don't understand," she called out. "What? Really!?"
Suddenly, Aerith ran to rejoin the others.
"They said that the temple itself is the Black Materia," Aerith said.
"This huge Temple?" Cloud exclaimed. "This is the Black Materia!? Then no one could take it."
"It's pretty hard," Aerith agreed. "But not impossible."
"Come again?" asked Cloud.
"You see this is a model of the temple," Aerith continued, pointing to the altar. "And inside it is a device which gets smaller each time you solve a puzzle. As the model becomes smaller, you become smaller too. Until it's small enough to fit in the palm of your hand."
"So, if we solve the puzzles, the Black Materia will get smaller and smaller and we can take it out?" asked Cloud.
"Yes," replied Aerith, "but there's one thing. You can only answer the puzzles inside the temple. So, anyone who solves the puzzle will be crushed by the temple."
"I see," said Cloud. "The Ancients didn't want dangerous magic to be taken out of the temple so easily."
"The Ancients were a mean bunch," said Cait Sith. "This way, no one'll be able to get it."
"Guess stuff this dangerous is best left alone?" suggested Cid.
"No," Cloud replied. "We've got to think of a way to get it out."
"Are you fucking crazy?" Cid demanded.
"Because Sephiroth has lots of different flunkies," Cloud explained as he tapped the altar. "It's nothing to him to throw their lives away to get the Black Materia. This place isn't safe."
The temple shook.
"So what are we going to do?" asked Aerith.
"Don't forget about me," Cait Sith suddenly announced as he stepped forward. "Everything you said makes perfect sense! You can use my stuffed body for the future of the Planet."
Cloud shook his head. "We can't let Sephiroth get his hands on the Black Materia. But we can't let the Shinra get theirs on it either."
"So that means you don't trust me?" asked the cat.
"Does Bambi shit in the woods?" replied Cloud.
"But Cloud," insisted Cait Sith, "there's really nothing else you can do. Everyone, please trust me. Why would I want to use the Black Materia? How can we harvest the Planet's energy when there's no Planet to harvest it from?"
"You've got a point," Cloud said. "Fine."
"All righty then!" Cait Sith exclaimed. "Leave it all to me! Everyone, hurry up and get outside! I'll go with you to a safe place."
"If we ever get the fuck out of here," Cid added.
"That's right!" Aerith exclaimed. "The reason we approached the altar in the first place!"
She ran behind the altar and stomped her foot. A door slid open behind her.
"Good enough?" she asked.
"Perfect," Cloud replied.
In the next room, there was a door. Aerith could hear birds chirping beyond it.
"That's the way out!" she said.
Cloud ran to the door and tried to open it. It was locked.
"Not again," he grumbled.
And then, out of curiosity, he touched the door again. He then turned to his companions.
"It's warm," he said. "This isn't good."
And then, Aerith watched in horror as the wall behind Cloud seemed to come to life.
"Cloud!" she exclaimed. "Behind you!"
Cloud quickly turned around. It was another red-colored dragon. Only this time, it only had an upper torso and a pair of arms. The rest of it seemed to be attached to the wall.
"No problem!" shouted Cid as he hurled his spear at the dragon's head.
Unfortunately, the spear missed, and hit the wall instead.
"Fuck it!" Cid shouted angrily.
The dragon took its right claw and pulled out the spear, dropping it to the ground. Blood began to ooze out of the wall.
"It is attached to the wall!" Aerith exclaimed.
"Well, we're not getting out of here that way!" Cait Sith pointed out.
"Back to the altar room!" Cloud commanded.
Everyone did as Cloud commanded. The other way out of the altar room remained sealed.
"How did we get out of here?" asked Aerith.
"What?!" asked Cloud.
Aerith gave Cloud one of those "oops" looks. "I said how do we get out of here?"
"Dunno," replied Cloud, ignoring the tense error.
"It looks like we have to kill that thing," Cloud said.
"So you mean…." began Aerith.
"Back to the other room," Cloud ordered.
The group returned to the other room, where they were greeted by eerie silence.
"The dragon's not moving," Cait Sith pointed out.
And then, Aerith did something that surprised everyone else. She went straight up to the dragon wall and poked it with her staff.
But the dragon did not move.
"Hmm," began Cait Sith. "The dragon looks dead."
"The dragon is dead," Aerith said. "Looks like it bled out from the spear wound."
"There better not be any more monsters in this temple," Cid groaned.
"There's aren't," Aerith replied. "I don't feel any."
And then, the door opened. Beyond the door, Aerith could see foliage, and hear birds chirping. She sighed and smiled. They were free.
"I'll handle the rest!" Cait Sith announced as he began to head back toward the altar room. "Well, everyone, take care of yourselves!"
Just as Cait Sith reached the doorway, Aerith nudged Cloud with her elbow.
"Come on, Cloud! Say something."
Cait Sith turned to face his companions one last time.
"I'm not good at this!" Cloud whispered.
"I understand," said Cait Sith. "I feel the same too."
"Why don't you read our fortunes?" Aerith suggested.
"Say, that's right," agreed Cait Sith. "I haven't done it in a while, huh? I'm so excited. Right or wrong, I'm still the same old me. Now, what should I predict?"
Aerith quickly grabbed Aerith's arm. "Let's see how compatible Cloud and I are!" she said enthusiastically.
"That'll cost ya," he replied. "Exactly one date! Here I go!" And then, he turned away. "This isn't good. I can't say it. Poor Tifa."
"No! insisted Aerith as she ran after him. "Tell me! I promise I won't get mad!"
"Is that so?" replied Cait Sith. "Then I'll tell you. Looks good. You are perfect for each other! Aerith's star and Cloud's star! They show a great future! Cloud, I'll be your matchmaker, preacher... I'll do whatever you want me to! You just call me when it all happens! Thank you for believing in me, knowing that I was a spy. This is the final, final farewell!"
"Be strong Cait Sith!" called Aerith as she, Cloud, and Cid disappeared out of the Temple's exit.
The cat smiled as he returned to the room with the murals. "She told me to be strong," he said to himself. "I feel so happy." Soon, he was at the altar. "This must be it! The Ancients sure did a great job making this. I can protect the Planet too! I'm kinda embarrassed. There's plenty of stuffed toys like my body around, but there's only one me! Don't forget me even if another Cait Sith comes along. Good bye, then! I guess I'm off to save the Planet!"
