Chapter 28: Bestla vs. Sephiroth
The others had seen the Urchin, too.
Tifa collapsed to ground.
"What's wrong, Tifa?" asked Yuffie frantically as she ran to her side.
"You look like you've seen a ghost," added Red XIII.
"I just might have," Tifa said as she got herself to her feet.
"Have you ever seen that airship before?" asked Vincent.
"I think I have," Tifa replied.
"Now that you mention it," Barret added, "I think I have, too."
"Do you recall when?" asked Red XIII.
"I dunno," Barret replied. "But seein' it makes my back hurt for some odd reason."
"That kind of ship was spotted a week or so ago," Vincent said. "It created itself out of nothing. It's not possible."
"Must be déjà vu," Tifa said quietly.
"No," Barret disagreed. "I know I seen it before. And I'd been on it, too!"
ABORD THE URCHIN…
"Dammit, Nara," scolded Bestla. "I didn't break you out of jail to stand around."
"I'm looking below," replied Nara. "I see Cloud, I see Aerith, I see Cid, and I see…whatever that weird thing is. Should I take them out?"
"Forget them for now," Bestla commanded. "Take us through the woods. And alert me if you see anyone with long, silver hair."
Nara did as she was ordered. She kept a watchful eye, checking everything from rocks, clearings, to even deer. Finally, she spotted him.
"Eureka!" shouted Nara. "Silver-haired guy spotted at two 'o clock!"
"Pursue him," Bestla commanded.
"How are we taking him out?" asked Nara.
"We can't turn him to dust," Bestla replied. "Or we'll destroy the Black Materia along with him. Start with a missile!"
Nara obediently pressed the button. The missile promptly fired out of the Urchin.
Sephiroth stopped dead in his tracks. He turned to see the approaching missile. With less than a second to spare, he dropped to the ground and rolled out of the way. The missile collided with the ground and exploded, hitting Sephiroth with endless particles of dust.
"Fuck!" exclaimed Bestla aboard the Urchin. "Fire again!"
Nara pressed the button.
Sephiroth heard the missile fire. He remained still until literally the last second, rolling away to get hit by more endless particles of dust.
"Dammit, Nara!" snapped Bestla. "You're wasting my missiles." She then went over to Nara and pushed her away from the console. "This is how a professional does it!"
Bestla pressed the button.
"Put it up his ass!" cheered Nara.
"No problem!" shouted Bestla.
The missile fired.
Sephiroth noticed. Realizing his situation, Sephiroth began to run towards a nearby ditch.
"No, stupid," Bestla said aboard the Urchin. "You just need to accept your fate."
Sephiroth disappeared into the ditch, just as the missile hit the rim of it, causing another explosion.
When the dust settled, Sephiroth did not emerge.
"GOT 'EM!" Bestla shouted triumphantly. She then began to leave the bridge.
"Where are you going?" asked Nara.
"I'm going down there," replied Bestla. "Just in case I need to finish the job."
ON THE GROUND…
Bestla hopped off the rope ladder onto the soft ground. She looked towards the now-smoldering ditch for signs of life. There were none. Bestla smiled. The hard part was over. Now all she needed to do was find the Black Materia. She briefly looked around her position to see if he had dropped it. It was nowhere to be seen, so she faced forward again.
And there, two yards from the smoldering pit, was Sephiroth.
"It's an honor to meet you," Bestla said. Although he was not as dead as she had hoped, she still smiled. She had the advantage.
"I am no longer the brave warrior you know me as," Sephiroth replied. "I need to move along."
"Oh no," Bestla insisted. "I know what you're plotting."
"Nobody understands," Sephiroth said. "Only I can. Because of who my mother is."
"I've been waiting for this for years," Bestla taunted, ignoring what he had said.
"I don't know you," Sephiroth replied. "Now, I must go. You are wasting my time."
"And I know how to use time to my advantage," Bestla said.
Sephiroth stopped. He found her peculiar.
"I'm from the future," Bestla continued. "Nine years."
"Then you know what I am about to become," Sephiroth replied confidently.
"Of course I do," said Bestla. She could not tell whether he believed her or not. "Nothing. Because you will summon Meteor and hide in your crater, but Cloud will come and kill you. In my time, you're just an unpleasant memory."
"I cannot be bothered with you," Sephiroth said as he turned to go on his way.
"Your plan failed, but mine won't," Bestla continued. "I'll be the one to become a goddess. I'll succeed where you died. But you've got something I need."
Sephiroth stopped, and turned to face her. "The Black Materia." He took it out and gazed at it in his hand.
"Exactly," Bestla replied. "I'm taking it here and now, whether you like it or not."
"Anyone who interferes with me, I kill," Sephiroth warned. "I had to kill a petty Turk an hour ago because he tried to hinder me."
"I think you better kill me," she finished.
In response, Sephiroth put down the Black Materia and drew his sword. "If you insist," he said.
"Oh no," Bestla said. "Poor Sephiroth. Poor, poor Sephiroth." She cocked her blaster. "You've just done the dumbest thing in your life."
Bestla fired the blue energy right into Sephiroth. It briefly surrounded him before he turned brown and dissolved.
Bestla stood triumphantly. A pile of dust was all that remained of Sephiroth.
"How ironic," she said. "The man who nearly destroyed the world reduced to a pile of ashes with the shot of a blaster."
She stared at the ashes briefly. Then she saw what she had been after: the Black Materia. It was hers now. She would take it to the North Pole, summon meteor, and become the goddess Sephiroth had wanted to become. She slowly made her way toward it.
"Don't you dare!" called a familiar voice.
Bestla quickly spun around in shock.
It was Sephiroth.
"I just killed you!" Bestla exclaimed.
"Foolish girl," Sephiroth retorted. "We are nowhere near my real body. If you read history properly, you would know I'm controlling Jenova cells to simulate a body for myself."
"You're not Sephiroth?!" Bestla exclaimed.
"Only his soul," Sephiroth replied. "Not his body."
"I don't care!" Bestla shouted as she fired another field of blue energy into Sephiroth.
Sephiroth stood casually for a few moments before he crumbled to dust.
Bestla sighed. "This is going to be harder than I thought," she said aloud.
"You had a bold idea," said Sephiroth as he rematerialized behind her.
Bestla spun around.
"But do you have enough blue energy to wipe out every Jenova cell on the Planet?"
"One way to find out!" Bestla replied as she fired her gun into Sephiroth again.
Sephiroth disintegrated into dust, then rematerialized a few feet away.
And then, Sephiroth made his move. He quickly grabbed his sword and wielded it, knocking the gun against a nearby tree. The gun exploded on impact, and the tree was quickly reduced to a pile of dust.
"I am sorry to disappoint you," Sephiroth said as he pointed his sword towards Bestla. "But do not worry. In death, you will become a part of me."
"Wait!" pleaded Bestla. "I'm not the one you want to kill! It's Aerith! She's planning on summoning Holy!"
Cautiously, Sephiroth lowered his sword. "Aerith."
"She's going to the ancient capital!" Bestla continued. "If you hurry you can still catch up to her!"
"Very good," replied Sephiroth. "I will reprieve you just this one time. But know this: I will not be merciful if I see you again."
"You won't," Bestla promised.
Sephiroth placed his sword back into the neck. "Well, then."
She turned around to see if the Urchin was still there. By the time she looked forward again, Sephiroth was gone.
Bestla collapsed to the ground. Sweat was drenching her body, causing her dress to stick to it. She could feel her heart racing faster than it had ever had been before. She could not believe how close she had just come to death. Nor could she believe her incredible fortune.
And then, she heard herself utter something she never thought she would.
"I want to go home."
MEANWHILE…
"Come to think of it," Tifa said after several minutes of silence, "I think I've been there, too. It was dark and musty inside. But I don't remember leaving."
"Neither do I," added Barret. "And that's the killer of it all. Wonderin' why."
"Maybe we were inside," Tifa suggested. "And somehow lost the memories."
"How does that happen to two people at once?" asked Barret.
"Or they could have been taken from us deliberately," Tifa suggested.
"By Hojo," Barret said.
"That would be my number one suspect," Tifa agreed.
"What would he want with you?" asked Red XIII.
"Dunno," Barret replied. "I don't feel nothin' wrong with me. Yet."
And then, Tifa got a horrified look on her face.
Barret turned to see what had horrified her. Yuffie and Cid were carrying the unconscious Cloud with Cait Sith closely behind.
"What happened?!" cried Tifa frantically as she ran over to the fallen Cloud.
"We're not sure," Yuffie replied. "We encountered Sephiroth and he seemed to cast some sort of spell on him."
"He's still breathing," Cid assured her.
"And Tifa," added Yuffie, "Sephiroth has the Black Materia."
"Motherfucker!" shouted Barret.
ABOARD THE URCHIN….
Bestla entered the bridge of the Urchin visibly shaken.
"What happened to you?" asked Nara.
"That wasn't Sephiroth," replied Bestla. "Only his soul. Creating a fake body from far away."
"What do you mean?" asked Nara.
"We're going to the Northern Continent," Bestla replied. "I'm going to catch up with Sephiroth if it's the last thing I do!"
Nara began to whisper so Bestla wouldn't hear. "If you're that stubborn about getting him, it probably will be the last thing you do!"
MEANWHILE….
In another part of the forest, another kind of materia sat alone, left behind by its former owner.
And then, two hands picked it up.
