Chapter 29: Holding my Thoughts in My Heart
At first, Cloud could not perceive anything at all.
Everything is white...what did I do? I don't remember anything...
My memory... since when...? If everything's a dream, don't wake me.
And then, his world around him began to materialize. He was in a forest, surrounded by tall, ancient trees. He had never been there, and continued to wonder if this was a dream or something else.
And then, a familiar, soothing soprano filled his ears.
"Cloud, can you hear me?"
Cloud turned to see Aerith peeking from behind a tree.
"Yeah, I hear you," he replied. "Sorry for what happened."
"Don't worry about it," she assured him.
"I can't help it."
"Then why don't you really worry about it?" Aerith laughed. "And let me handle Sephiroth."
"Aerith…"
Before he could say another word, Aerith approached him and planted a deep kiss on his mouth. She then placed her hands on his shoulders.
"I love you, Cloud," she continued. "To the moon and back. But right now, everybody's life is in danger."
"I know," Cloud said.
"Cloud," said Aerith, "I want you to promise me something."
"Shoot."
"Please believe me when I say I'm going to be alright. It's going to look really bleak in a day or two, but, trust me, I'll be alright. I know what you're going through." She paused. "I'm going through it too. I'm really sensitive to it."
"What?" asked Cloud.
"I think you know," replied Aerith as she turned her back toward him and began to walk deeper into the forest. "But I haven't mentioned it because I've wanted to savor everything."
"What do you mean?" asked Cloud.
"I was focused on what we were after…thinking of a way it could be different this time."
"This time?" asked Cloud, perplexed.
"That's right," Aerith replied. "But when we were together I was thinking with my vagina way too much. That was a mistake."
"It was worth it, wasn't it?" asked Cloud as he saw Aerith's figure get smaller and smaller.
"Totally," she replied as she placed her hand on her butt and gave Cloud a wink. "We'll be together again, so don't worry. I mean it." She walked further into the forest before turning around to talk one last time. "And Cloud, you take care of yourself. So you don't have a breakdown, okay?"
"Okay," promised Cloud. "But what is this place?"
"This forest leads to the City of the Ancients," Aerith replied, "and is called the Sleeping Forest. It's only a matter of time before Sephiroth uses Meteor. That's why I'm going to protect it. Only a survivor of the Cetra, like me, can do it."
"What does that mean?" asked Cloud.
"The secret is just up here," said Aerith, waiving and seemingly ignoring his question. "At least it should be. ...I feel it. It feels like I'm being led by something. Then, I'll be going now. I'll come back when it's all over."
And then, Aerith was gone.
"Aerith!" called Cloud, not expecting a response.
But he got a response. Just not the one he had been hoping for.
"Hmm... she's thinking of interfering?" asked Sephiroth as he appeared from the sky. "She will be a difficult one, don't you think? We must stop that girl soon."
"YOU!" exclaimed Cloud as he drew his sword. "What are you going to do to her?! ANSWER ME!"
"Or what?" taunted Sephiroth. "You'll kill me? That would be kind of meaningless. This is your dream, Cloud. Which leads me to ask you something. Why wasn't Aerith naked?"
MOMENTS LATER….
Cloud shot up in bed. As reality returned to him, he realized it was daytime. Looking around, he could see a tranquil room, and the air from an open window smelled like Goganga's ruined reactor.
And then, he perceived Tifa and Barret standing at his bedside.
"You look like you was havin' a nightmare," Barret said. "How are you feeling?"
"Don't really know," replied Cloud. "I had the weirdest dream."
"I guess that's right," Barret said. "Well, don't worry too much about it."
Just then, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Yuffie, Cid, and Vincent entered the room.
"Welcome back, numbskull!" Cid greeted.
"Cloud!" exclaimed Yuffie. "I'm glad you woke up. No, I didn't steal anything!"
"Cloud, you can't scare us like that," Red XIII said.
"Not every body's a toy," Cait Sith agreed.
"You don't want to know how a long seep feels," said Vincent.
"You guys," Cloud began. "You waited around for me that whole time?"
Everyone nodded in unison.
Cloud smiled. He was never the social type, but the fact that so many people cared for him touched him somewhat.
By the time everyone but Tifa and Barret had left the room, however, his smile had faded.
It was not who he saw, but, rather, who he didn't see.
Tifa then gave Cloud a solemn look. "You know, Cloud," she began, "Aerith is gone."
"What?!" asked Cloud as he got to his feet.
"Everyone's out looking for Aerith," Barret added.
"City of the Ancients," Cloud mumbled. "Aerith is headed there."
"She told you?" asked Tifa.
Cloud nodded.
"By herself!?" exclaimed Barret. "Why did she go by herself!? Hey, we're goin' too."
"Only the Ancients, only Aerith can save us from Meteor," Cloud said.
"Then we must go," Tifa insisted. "What'll we do if something happens to Aerith? If Sephiroth finds her, she's in trouble."
"Sephiroth already knows," Cloud said.
"Then why are you still sittin' around?" demanded Barret.
"Let's go, Cloud," Tifa said.
"No," Cloud dismissed as he clutched his head and sat back down. "I might lose it again. If Sephiroth comes near me, I might..."
"Yeah, godammit!" Barret interrupted. "It's 'cuz of you that Sephiroth got the Black Materia in the first place. It's your damn fault!"
"My fault?" asked Cloud.
"Barret!" snapped Tifa.
"I know you got problems," Barret continued, ignoring Tifa's reprimand. "Hell, we all do. But you don't even understand yourself."
"Cut it out!" Tifa snapped in a harsher tone of voice. "Don't you realize what he's been through?"
"And this is why I got to leave," Cloud said.
"But you gotta understand that there ain't no getting' offa this train we're on, till we get to the end of the line," Barret replied.
"Cloud, we came this far," said Tifa. "Aren't you going to settle up with Sephiroth?"
Cloud shook his head. "I'm afraid if this keeps up, I may go crazy!"
"Just a damn jackass, that's what you are," Barret grunted. "Yo, jes' think about it. How many people in this world do ya think really understand themselves? People get depressed in life because they don't know what's up. But, they go on living. They don't run away. Isn't that how it is?"
He then stormed out of the room.
Cloud remained alone with Tifa.
"Cloud, you'll come with us, right?" Tifa asked. "I believe in you."
Cloud looked into Tifa's eyes, and noticed they were baggy.
"You really stood vigil over me this whole time?" Cloud asked.
Tifa nodded. "I couldn't sleep until I knew you were okay."
A moment later, Tifa was gone, too
Cloud remained alone in the room.
"What am I supposed to do?" he asked himself aloud. "Pull out of here? Pull out to where?"
And then he realized there was nowhere to run. If he left now, Sephiroth would summon Meteor. He would be killed anyway. And, if Sephiroth encountered Aerith again….
Cloud quickly got up and moved to the next room where Barret and Tifa were. He realized he needed to find Aerith before Sephiroth did.
"Cloud," began Tifa.
"Wait a minute, Tifa," Barret interjected. "Give him a little time. He has to decide this on his own. You believe in Cloud right?"
Barret led Tifa out of the hotel lobby, but Cloud had already made up his mind. He quickly followed them outside.
"Hey, how are you?" greeted Barret outside. "I just wanna know, which is it gonna be?
You wanna find out about yourself? Or are you afraid to find out? Either way, you stay around here and about all you can do is worry about it. Even if you do go nuts again when you see Sephiroth. If it happens, it happens. I'll go upside your spikey white head and bring you back to normal!"
"Cloud, it'll be all right," Tifa insisted. "We're all with you."
"But..." Cloud began.
"If it happens, it happens," Barret repeated. "Don't worry about it."
"You're right," said Cloud. He then looked at Tifa. "He's right, isn't he?"
"Come on," Tifa assured him. "Let's go and find Aerith."
"Tifa, I need to talk to you," Cloud said.
Barret automatically put his hands up and went back inside.
"What's wrong?" asked Tifa.
"These premonitions I've been having," Cloud said. "Lately I've been having a feeling that something's about to happen to Aerith."
Tifa's face produced a concerned look. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know," Cloud said. "But I've been having a feeling that something's going to happen to her. As if her days are numbered."
"Maybe we're not too late," Tifa said. "Maybe these premonitions are a warning to go and help her before something happens."
"You think?" asked Cloud.
"It's possible," Tifa replied. "And the déjà vu we've been having…maybe we really did live it before. Maybe something did happen to Aerith, but we're being given a second chance to stop it."
"A second chance…." Cloud scratched his head. "I never thought of it that way."
"If we hurry, maybe we can save her," Tifa continued.
"I hope so," Cloud replied. "Call it cheating or changing history, but maybe we can."
"Let's go to the Northern Continent," Tifa said. "And we'll save Aerith."
