"Let's review."
Squall muttered something under his breath while trying to sink deeper into the easy chair he was sitting on. Maggie, who was sitting on the foot stool beside him, giggled.
"Squall, you and I were married one year ago, a year after your late wife died."
Squall nodded, and Seifer continued.
"Maggie, you were four when we were married." Maggie hummed out a "Mhmm."
"Squall, you insisted that the wedding would be small, so we went to California and had a small ceremony on the beach."
Squall paused, frowning. "How did we meet again?"
"At Rinoa's funeral, I was in business with her father and so was invited there formally. You were grieving and I offered comfort for one night." Seifer said, ignoring Squall's scowl. "We continued dating off and on until after a year's time we decided to tie the knot. Got it?"
Squall half-heartedly nodded.
"Raijin, you've already talked to all the maids, and the housekeeper to sort out everything?"
A dark skinned man with a burly frame wearing suit pants and an unbuttoned dress shirt nodded. "Talked to Quistis, ya know? Got all the stories spread through all the maids, gonna be a lot of gossiping for Mr. Loire to listen to, ya know?"
Seifer looked pleased. "And Fujin, you talked to the gardeners and the people who will be coming in later this week, correct?"
"AFFIRMITIVE." Fujin said with a nod. Unlike Raijin's casual dress, she was wearing a light blue dress suit, looking rather smart, though the eye patch over one of her red eyes ruined the complete business woman look.
Squall had already been introduced to both of them. The heads of Seifer's business, Almasy Inc., and best friends to the blonde, they were Seifer's partners in all sorts of dastardly deeds. Maggie liked Raijin for his tendency to end all sentences with "Ya know?" and his friendly attitude. Fujin's way of speaking scared her though.
"Squall, you and Maggie were living in Seattle while I moved to New York, and so this is the first time we have seen each other since the last time I visited you. So this Christmas is a very special time for us as a family."
Squall was sure that Seifer wouldn't know what a special family time was if it hit him in the face, but didn't say anything. Instead, he nodded.
Seifer turned to Fujin. "There were those things that I talked about with you before, Fujin. Could you take Raijin and start clearing up those difficulties now?" Squall narrowed his eyes, wondering 'those difficulties' were, but didn't say anything. "And Maggie, you should go meet Quisty. Raijin will take you there, okay?"
Squall sunk deeper into his chair. He had avoided being alone with Seifer since they had come into the house, and they had gone through everything without leaving Maggie's presence. He should have known that Seifer would want to be alone to discuss the more personal matters of their 'relationship.'
After everyone had left, Seifer closed the door and turned on Squall to smile while he sat down in the chair across from him. They were in Seifer's study, there were many shelves lining the walls, filled with books that Seifer had probably never read. The room had many comfortable chairs, and in the corner was a desk with a laptop and several stacks of papers on it, the only part of the room that looked well used.
"So Princess, Maggie is gonna keep on calling me "that man" or "Mr. Almasy"?"
Squall sighed. "She already expressed her concern on calling you her father, there is nothing more I can do." Seifer had tried to coax Maggie into calling him "Daddy" the same way that she addressed Squall. But Maggie had proudly declared that Squall was her 'Daddy' and Seifer didn't deserve the title because he was a bad man.
The announcement had been rather embarrassing for Squall. He was going to talk to Maggie about that later as well.
"Well, don't turn her against me. She needs to view me in a friendly and familiar manner. You telling her I'm a horrible man is no help at all."
Squall glared. "I didn't tell her anything."
"Oh? And so how did she get such a biased opinion against me? She's only five; most children aren’t naturally hateful at that age."
Amusedly, Squall mentally pointed out that he had been. "I didn't tell her anything about you, she just doesn't like you. She is a good judge of character." He said with his eyes narrowed.
Seifer laughed.
"Fine Princess, just make sure that she acts like a loving daughter. Even if she just calls me "Seifer" it would be understandable. Most step children call the second parent by their first name."
Squall wondered when Seifer had appointed himself an authority on the subject. "Whatever."
Seifer seemed satisfied. "So, about us. We're madly in love and haven't been around each other for a month. We're both good looking and I have an insatiable libido. We're going to be going at it, or at least pretending to a lot. Think you can handle that?"
"I'll sleep on the floor."
Seifer smirked. "It's a big bed; we can both fit on it comfortably. Maybe I'll even promise to keep my hands to myself if you're good. We can't take any chances of Mr. Loire walking in on us not looking like a couple."
Squall raised a hand to his head once more. "Fine." He said tersely. "Don't do anything in front of Maggie."
Seifer laughed. "Of course I wouldn't, I'm the caring father and don't want to corrupt her young mind, now do I?"
Squall was set on the idea that he was going to keep Maggie around him at all times to avoid Seifer. "And just because we're lusting after each other doesn't mean that you have to get stupid about it. No more than necessary."
Seifer frowned. "And how much is more than necessary?"
Squall closed his eyes for a moment, continuing to rub his temple. "No kissing, no petting and no holding hands. You can put your arm around my waist in front of Mr. Loire, but nothing more. Absolutely no contact when he's not around, it isn't necessary."
Seifer laughed. "Oh this is great; Mr. Loire will think that we're not attracted to each other that way. Screw your rules Leonhart, I'll do things my way and you'll deal. You're being paid enough that it should soothe your wounded pride if someone watches us being affectionate."
Squall stood. If looks could kill, Seifer would be dead and buried, the glare that Squall was giving laced with ice and poison. He muttered a "whatever" and left then, deciding that he should find Maggie and have that talk.
"What's Maggie's real name? When is Maggie's bed time?" Seifer asked before Squall could make it to the door. "What is her favorite cartoon character? What is her favorite movie? What does she like to do? Does she have an imaginary friend?"
Squall paused, before he turned around. The low tone that Seifer was using gave Squall some hope that Seifer was done screwing around.
"Her name is Meghan Roselyn Heartily. Maggie goes to bed at eight. She loves Cinderella, and anything to do with princes and princesses. She hates Barbie, and anything that portrays a love of money or expensive things. She likes animals, and dolls." Squall shrugged, not knowing what else Seifer would need to know in order to pretend to be her doting father.
"Why does she have a different last name then you? Does she need lullabies to get to sleep? How old was she when she was potty trained? Does she like music? Who are her friends at school? Jesus Leonhart, you're the parent. Tell me everything you think a parent should know about their kid."
Slowly, Squall returned back to his chair. "Maggie wanted to use her mother's maiden name, so that she would always be reminded of her. At school, she likes this little boy named Eric..." And like that Squall spoke about the only thing that he felt important enough to talk about.
---
It was past 7:30 when Squall and Seifer finished going over everything they needed to know. Or more importantly, everything that Seifer could wrack out of Squall about the two of them. By the time Squall had escaped his throat was dry from talking more then he had for the past two years. After Seifer showed him around the house so that Squall could familiarize himself with where everyone was, Seifer had left to do some business, and Squall decided that now would be as good of time as any to talk to Maggie.
It had taken a while to locate her, since most of the maids that Squall stopped to ask had seen her, but did not know where she was now. He finally found her in a room with a young blonde woman. The woman had a clipboard of some sort and was writing something on it, while Maggie sat on the floor playing with an expensive looking doll that Squall didn't recognize. On the TV in front of them, a movie Squall immediately recognized as Cinderella was playing.
"Daddy! Look at the doll that Ms. Quisty gave me!" Maggie said as soon as she seen Squall, offering no greeting but instead running to him to hold out the doll. "Isn't it pretty?"
Squall looked at it for a moment, classic blonde locks fell to the dolls mid back, and a china face, carefully painted was flawless in design. The dress the doll wore was very detailed and well made, and Squall winced when he realized that this doll was better then anything he had ever been able to give to Maggie.
"It's very nice." Squall said with a soft smile, before he knelt down and opened his arms up to Maggie, who immediately rested against him, tucking her head under his chin. "But it's getting pretty close to someone's bedtime, isn't it Maggie?"
Maggie looked back up at Squall and pouted, but when her father gave no signs of giving in to the expression she sighed and nodded. "Okay Daddy."
Squall smiled and stood up, holding out his hand which she dutifully took. "I'll show you where my room is." She said with a smile. "Ms. Quisty showed me all around so I know where everything is. Do you want me to show you where your room is too?" She asked before giggling and hanging tighter onto Squalls hand.
"Nah, I think I'll find it on my own." Squall said pleasantly as he let Maggie 'lead' him to her room, not daring to tell her that he already knew where it was. When they arrived there, Maggie found a nightgown that had been unpacked for her, and darted behind a screen to change as Squall sat down on the bed.
"Maggie, when Mr. Loire is around, make sure that you call Mr. Almasy "Seifer" okay?" Squall said while he looked down at his hands. "Since you need to pretend that he's your father too."
Maggie hummed out an "Okay" while she fought with the buttons of the nightgown she was putting on. "Mommy told me not to call him Daddy since he's a bad man." Maggie said, before stepping out from behind the screen. Squall noticed with amusement that the buttons that ran up the back of the nightgown were not aligned. Beckoning her to him Squall smiled while he started undoing the buttons and re-aligning the fabric.
"Mommy's probably right too, but please?"
Maggie nodded, and after a few moments she pulled away, interrupting Squall in mid-button as she looked up at him. "Mr. Almasy doesn't like angels. Mommy said so. She went too close to him and he started getting really mad. People who don't like angels aren’t nice people, are they? I wonder why he hates them so much."
Squall frowned. "I don't think he knows they're there. Maybe he was just getting mad at something else."
Maggie shook her head and pulled away again, making Squall think of giving up at ever getting the buttons done up.
"No! Mommy says that he just hates them! She wants to stay around you to keep you safe but Mr. Almasy doesn't even notice. She can't protect you, so I don't think you should go around Mr. Almasy if you aren’t safe. I'm going to tell Mr. Almasy that he's making Mommy very sad. Maybe he'll be nicer then?"
Squall sighed, before he pulled Maggie back in front of him and continued to button her up. "I don't think that Seifer even knows they are there." Squall said, making sure that he used Seifer's first name to help Maggie get into the habit of calling him that. "I can't see the angels either, Maggie." Squall said, finishing up her buttons and turning her to face him, looking at her in the eye. "I think that you're the only one who can."
"But Daddy..." Maggie interrupted, "The angels like you because you don't hate them! Because you believe that they're there. Right? You know that they're there and that they are watching. So they like you!"
Squall bit his tongue. "Maggie, I..."
"You do believe me, right Daddy?" Maggie asked, suddenly she reached out and grabbed onto Squall's arms, looking upset. "You don't think I'm lying do you? You know! You have to! Don't make Mommy sad!"
Squall looked down, continuing to bite his tongue until he said quietly. "If you say that they are there Maggie, I believe you." Squall said, before he leaned down and touched his lips to Maggie's forehead and then put his arms around her as he pulled her into his lap, embracing her tightly. "But, I don't think other people would. Other people wouldn't understand." Squall explained, lightly stroking Maggie's hair as he felt the girl let out a small sob.
"But...I see them. They can talk to me and I know how they feel because they show me. Why don't people understand that? Why doesn't everyone else see them too?"
Squall bit his lip. "You're very special Maggie." Squall said, before he kissed her forehead again. "It's just, everybody else. So don't tell anyone else, okay?" He asked, tilting his head to the side in a worried manner. "It will just be our little secret okay? Don't let anyone else about what you see."
Maggie sniffed for a few minutes, before she finally nodded. "Okay Daddy, I won't tell anyone else."
Squall smiled, before he sat up, lifting her up in his arms with him before he spun her around and then plopped her back onto the bed. "Now, it's past your bedtime." Squall said before pulling up the blanket and tossing it over Maggie, totally covering her with it. Maggie squealed and tossed underneath it until she found the end of it, poking her head up and giggling before Squall pressed her back into the pillows.
"Good night Maggie." Squall said with a smile, kissing her forehead one more time before he walked to the doorway.
"Good night Daddy." Maggie said, before she cuddled down into the blankets and closed her eyes. After standing and watching her for a few minutes to make sure she was asleep, Squall flipped off the light switch and exited, closing the door behind him.
He was more than surprised, to see Seifer standing down the hall a ways, watching him intently.
"Your little secret, eh?"
Squall glared. "Leave it alone."
"Nah, see Squall, this is what happens when there is only one parent. The kid starts getting weird and needs to have attention. She's bullshitting you just so that you can give her more attention. And the worst part is, you let her. You have to tell her to stop so she'll get around it."
Squall twitched before he snarled. "You don't know anything about her. Shut the fuck up, Seifer. Maggie isn't like that."
Seifer looked taken aback, before he put his hand through his hair and laughed. "Shit Leonhart, you think that she actually sees something? She's a freak who thinks she can see dead people. Why haven't you sent her to a mental hospital or some place where she can get some help?"
Seifer crossed the line, before the words were out of his mouth Squall had lunged. The brunette only got one punch to Seifer's jaw before the blonde had tackled him, pressing him back against the wall and restraining him. Squall didn't stop struggling against him, glaring at the blonde who now had a trickle of blood flowing from the corner of his mouth. "She's not a freak! She is only a little girl, you know nothing about her so just shut up and mind your own buisness!"
Seifer returned Squall's glare, pressing the smaller man back against the wall harder until Squall became aware of the fact that there was no room between them.
"You're trying to be a perfect father, and you're blind to the fact that your daughter is either using you, or going crazy. Ever consider that maybe I'm just trying to help?"
"I don't need your help." Squall glared, before he shoved back at Seifer. "Let go of me."
Seifer didn't move for a few moments, his expression searching as his gaze bored into Squall. Finally he pushed Squall back into the wall as he released him, his now free hand going to his jaw, touching his mouth until he felt the split in the corner of his bottom lip. "Fuck, Leonhart you stupid ass. Protective much?" He said in a taunting voice.
Squall ignored him; instead he pushed back from the wall and rubbed his knuckles carefully while he walked down the hall towards the room he would be using. Seifer's suite had two bedrooms in it, and Squall had every intention of using the spare bed until he absolutely had to. He was still bristling from the fact that Seifer had dared call Maggie a "freak," he didn’t need to hear any more from Seifer tonight.
But the blonde seemed to have his own ideas about that.
"Slow down, Leonhart." Seifer said as he came up behind him, looping his arm around his waist and nuzzling into his neck abruptly. "Someone might think you're a little too eager to get into my bed." Squall glared as he jerked away from Seifer's touch, saying nothing in hopes that Seifer would leave him alone.
No such luck. "You sleep naked Leonhart? I got nice silk sheets, I'm sure you'll look good in them." Seifer said in a sultry voice, standing close but not actually touching Squall. When Squall continued to remain silent, Seifer took that as his cue to demand Squall's attention out from underneath him, quickening his pace to grab Squall and push him to the side, pressing him against the door to his room.
"Why you so quiet, Leonhart?" Seifer asked, inching his face closer so that Squall could feel the heat of Seifer's breath across his cheek. "Don't be scared..." He whispered, while his hands wound their way around Squall's shoulders and his head bobbed down to lock lips. Squall turned his head as he saw the attack coming, growling and lifting his arms to push at Seifer's shoulders.
"Get off of me; don't make me punch you again." Squall said, bristling as Seifer's hands ghosted down his sides to his thighs. "Get off!"
Seifer let out a husky chuckle, and started to kiss down Squall's neck, pausing when he got to Squall's ear. With a careful movement he took the top of Squall's ear into his mouth, and after running his tongue and suckling on it enough to turn it red he pulled back to look at Squall. Squall was fuming and struggling to free his hands from where Seifer had pinned them against the wall. "I'm sure I'll get off a lot Princess, so why don't we take this to the bedroom where it belongs?"
Squall snarled, and in a sharp jerking movement, he released one of his hands, and took another swing at Seifer's head. The blonde who had been expecting such an outburst released the brunette and backed away, easily out of hand's reach.
"I'm not your whore." Squall said, before turning on his heel and walking towards the door of the bedroom. After opening he stepped in, ignoring the leer that Seifer gave him when he walked through the room towards another door. The room was extravagant, and the first time Squall had seen it, he wasn't at all surprised by the oversized bed and extravagant design and decoration. Mostly gold and reds were visible, and the second bed, while not as big, was in a smaller room of equal extravagance. Squall hated it all.
While walking over the threshold into the small room, Squall turned on Seifer who was following behind him a few feet. "If you put your hands on me one more time through the rest of this week, I will leave and the deal will be off. Got it?"
Seifer glared and growled his answer, and Squall continued to stand there, returning the glare with one made of ice. "Mr. Almasy, do you understand?"
Seifer snarled before he walked forward. Squall wasn't sure what to do, but Seifer only pushed him through the doorway and slammed the door shut. "Crystal clear, Princess." Seifer's growl said, and Squall sighed before moving towards his bed, starting to pull off his shirt.
He hoped that this Mr. Loire was a man of honor, because he couldn't take any more of Seifer's promiscuous attitude.
