“Why
do you look so grumpy?” Seifer asked as he walked into his and
Zell's shared room. He set the doll down gently on her makeshift bed.
Zell was really surprised that Seifer was taking this so seriously,
even to the point of being nice... ish.
“Selphie,”
He said.
“And?”
“She was being a brat
and all secretive about something.”
It felt weird having
an almost normal conversation with Seifer, though it also felt nice.
Zell set down on their bed, before pulling his knees up to his chest.
“You know just your normal girl weirdness,” He went on.
He was not about to tell Seifer what Selphie was being secretive
about after all.
“She's way too hyper,” Seifer
murmured. He set down next to Zell, turning side ways so that he was
facing the younger blond. “She does have her good points...”
Seifer was trying really hard to be nice and that also meant not bad
mouthing any of Zell's friends. Truthfully he did think Selphie had
good points.
“You're not going to tell me that you've
had a secret crush on her and this is why you...” Zell coughed,
blushing slightly when he realized what he had been about to
say.
Seifer obviously knew what he was going to say and Zell
was amazed that he hadn't started yelling or something.
“No.
That is not why and I don't have a crush on her. Not my type.”
Seifer smirked. “I don't think a bully ever has reasons for
being a bully other then...” He trailed off.
“What?”
Zell was curious. Was Seifer opening up?
“Don't repeat
this or I will deny it, okay?” Seifer said. “I don't know
what I am trying to say.”
“Bullies bully people
because they want everyone to feel as miserable as they feel, or
they're jealous of someone...” Zell murmured. “People
said that you had changed a lot after the war, but I never believed
them to be honest because you were always just as mean to me
and...”
“Say it, I'm a jerk, right?” Seifer
was actually looking fragile, as if he had opened his heart to get
broken. The last person he expected to open up to was Zell.
“Y-yes.”
Zell cringed.
“I know and I have changed on the inside.
I've seen so much durning the war. I caused so much real pain and
death-”
Zell opened his mouth to say something.
“-No,
I don't care if I was possessed. I went with her of my own free will
when she promised me anything I wanted. I was selfish. When I pulled
back was when she put me under her control.”
“You
didn't know what she was capable of. You had no idea. She had you
under her spell and played to your weaknesses.”
“I
have to be the same me or else...” Seifer stopped and stood up.
“If I let on that I care, then I'll be broken that much easier
by all the hate and fear I see every day.”
“Seifer...”
Surprisingly, Zell's heart was now going out for his hopefully former
enemy. “Do you know that none of us hate you? Hate is such a
strong word. Sure, I wouldn't say we like you when you are a jerk,
but hate? No, we know what happened.”
Seifer remained
silent.
“Squall wouldn't have let you back in Garden if
he didn't trust you.”
“Squall trust me?”
Seifer asked. “Seriously?”
“You've known him
as long as I have and you know he wouldn't just let anyone into
Garden.” Squall was only acting as the headmaster until Cid
returned. Whenever that might be.
“I... guess.”
A
depressed Seifer is something I never imagined I would see, Zell
thought.
Standing up, Zell walked up behind Seifer and put a
hand on his shoulder. “I would have never saw this coming, but
cheer up Seifer. It'll get easier, hey? One step at a time and all
that jazz. Opening up to your real self doesn't necessarily mean you
will get hurt. I'm sure people would be surprised at first, but I'm
sure they'd like seeing this so call change they've heard rumors
about.”
“I feel weird,” Seifer chuckled. “I
feel really stupid. I don't even know how to carry real
relationships.”
Zell grinned. “It's easy. You say
hi, I say hi, we hang out and gossip about Garden scandals, and have
manly bonding time and all that jazz, and when you meet someone else,
you say hi, and they say hi and the process is repeated all over
again.”
Seifer blinked, before bursting out laughing.
“That easy, huh?”
Oh people were going to be
talking for sure, but at least he wasn't baking cookies... yet at
least.
“Very easy. Try it.”
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“Not
too hard,” Seifer said, sounding amused. After opening up, he
really didn't seem too bad. It was sad he had taken so many years to
do it. “So now what? Do we hold hands and walk down the
hallways now?”
Zell blushed. “No... that would be
a little more then normal male bonding, unless...”
“I
was joking. You easily blush I've noticed.”
“Oh no
matter what, you are still Seifer.”
“I say it like
I see it, Zell.”
With a smile, Zell looked down at the
floor. He felt his heart do a little jump and knew at once that
couldn't be a good thing. Seifer might be trying to be nice, but that
did not mean Zell could get a crush on him!
He said my
name...
“What's wrong Zell?” Seifer asked, having
no idea that saying Zell's name was causing the boy to become
flustered. Zell was so used to Seifer calling him mean
names.
“N-nothing.”
“Something
is.”
“You said my name. I know, it's silly, but...
It's just nice to hear it like that.”
“You're such
a sap,” Seifer teased, though in a good natured way.
“Well
how would you feel if someone you've known all your life never called
you by your name and then one day he decides to change and...”
Zell pouted. “Whatever, you know what I mean.”
“Don't
tell me that you wanted to be my friend all this time,” Seifer
said in a soft voice.
“I did admire you... I mean, I do.
I mean, you're strong and tall and you can take care of
yourself...”
“Look where it got me.”
“But
still...”
Seifer chuckled. “Since we are
confessing, I was always jealous of you and that is probably the main
reason I picked on you the most.” Did I just admit that?
“Why
would you be jealous of me?”
“You were always
happy, always smiling and everyone liked you right away. You never
had to try to make a friend, you didn't have to force people to like
you. You got friends by being nice, not being a jerk like me.”
Zell
grinned. “Wow. If you were a girl then I'd think you had a
crush on me too.” Zell turned away from Seifer to hide his
blush.
“Yeah, I know. It sounds really corny, but it's
true.”
“The past is the past,
all of it.”
“True... I can't see your friends
suddenly opening their arms for me, though.”
“My
friends are their friends.”
It was probably Zell's
imagination, but he swore that Seifer blushed.
