“Alright whose next?!” Zack cheered. He heard the comment from the group. “Kid's fucken crazy.” Zack had won every round of squats so far and he had gathered quite a few accessories. The infantry common room was more packed than normal because of this competition. He had just finished round fifteen and he was still bouncing on the spot. At least he found out how he could burn all his access energy. He had also found he had more energy than he realized. He wasn't aware of the 1st Class leaning against the door frame watching him from behind. “Zack Fair.” The voice called out.
Zack turned round. Then stopped. He remembered that man. The one who had told him to be careful not long after he got off the bus.
“Sir!” He saluted. The man walked into the common room and the infantry seemed to part the ways for this man. Zack knew him by face, but not by name. “Your group has been assigned a mission. Just routine monster clean up but it will go towards any chance you have in getting into SOLDIER. You're to pack up and head out in three hours.” “Yes sir!” Zack grabbed his won items and headed out the door. “Oh and Zack?” “Yes?” “You better not have wasted all your energy this is a three day assignment with Devere. His scores will be affected as well.” “Understood!” Zack watched the 1st Class walk off.The hand slapped him on the shoulder. “Congratulations.” Kunsel grinned.
“On what?” “On grabbing Angeal's attention. It's not often a 1st Class will seek out us infantry, they normally send another infantry member to do it.” “It's probably cause they're all here.” Zack shrugged it off. Kunsel chuckled. “Somehow I don't think so. Regardless... Take care.”~*~*~*~
The call of the battle was a powerful attraction. He fell into it.
For this mission it was required two weapon choices (a rare thing but considering three day missions meant limited bullets for the infantry, so a second weapon was provided), two accessory slots and four materia slots, two on the bracelet and two for the sword.
Zack let the blade glide through the flesh of the bandersnatch, he hadn't touched the rifle, he wouldn't until he needed it. Blaize was the same. Zack was astounded at the blonde, he could really use the blade. It was a biased thought that all rich people didn't bother with weapon training. But obviously Blaize thought differently.
While Kolenka and Ace were using the standard issue riffle. The monsters round them dropped like flies and afterwards Zack found he couldn't stay still. He was still bouncing on the spot when Blaize just grinned at him.
“That was pretty awesome.” The blonde commented. Zack grinned. “Yeah tell me about. I didn't know you knew how to do it.” “Home schooled.” Blaize laughed. “I got bored easy. I spent time running round in the backyard swinging a sword.” It was at that moment Zack liked the blonde more, something he could relate to. “No offense but what are doing hanging out with guys like Kolenka?” “His father is in business with mine. Not very legit stuff... but I didn't want anything to do with so I joined ShinRa. Turns out he wasn't happy and when I wouldn't come home. Got Kolenka's old man to send him in and keep an eye on me.” “By spending your money.” Zack frowned. Blaize shrugged. “Not my money, my dad's I don't care. My father forgot what it was like to work for that money to earn it legally. I wanna experience that.” Zack smiled. “By working for ShinRa and getting an honest paycheck. I can totally respect that.”Eight months and this was probably the most the blonde had spoken to him. Kolenka had always interrupted. But at that moment Ace and Kolenka were being told off by Devere for running into a Giant Hornet's nest area and causing more trouble. But the two were looking for level ups not to support their fellow team mates.
Blaize just smiled. “I'm sorry for my lack of backbone in the past.” “You're scared of them aren't you?” Zack understood he'd seen it happen in the past back home the local older kids bullying the weaker younger ones into doing stupid things. Blaize nodded. “Those guys... do things that- make you listen.” He whispered watching the two glaring at Devere as they were told off. Zack frowned he remembered Kunsel's first warning. “Do things... so it's true then about the whole you know thing?” Blaize blinked. “Define thing?” “The SMS pranks on Sephiroth. I still haven't got a phone because of that.” Zack blushed. “Yeah they got caught out a couple of months after you joined our group. It's safe to get a cellphone.” Blaize chuckled. “Nah... I don't need one. I'm using my extra cash and wiring it to my folks back home. I'll stop when they tell me to. They need it more than me.” Blaize sat with Zack under the tree the snow falling about them. Devere seemed no where done with his lecture on the two trouble makers. Zack watched the blonde pull out a cigarette and light it up. “Those'll kill you, ya know.” He motioned. “Yep... It killed my mother.” He stated.Zack blinked. “Wow sorry.” He hadn't expected that blunt comment but it seemed like the blonde wanted to talk. Zack would let him, he was good at talking to people. He'd found out it was his... thing, so to speak.
“She smoked like a train. This is her brand.” Blaize patted the soft pack with a smile. “Makes me feel closer to knowing who she was as a person. She smoked cause of my father, he never hurt her when she smelled of smoke. So she smoked so he wouldn't.” Zack frowned. Sounded like a case of untold domestic violence, he never spoken to anyone involved with it before. This was his first case of the cold side of humanity and the pain they caused their loved ones. Blaize let his head drop in a moment of weakness. “Sometimes,” He whispered. “When it snows I feel like I can hear her. Like the planet is letting her have that moment to speak to me. When it got bad, as a kid she would bundle me up in a blanket and take me to her hometown where my grandparents would give me cookies we'd sit round the fire with our hot chocolates.” “Your mother... she-” Zack looked at blonde. “She came from Modeoheim.” He held his hand up catching the snow on it, while taking another drag on the cigarette. “Modeoheim...” Zack repeated. “Yep, I consider that my true home, it's where my heart has the best memories. Even if I wasn't there often enough to know the people, I loved the place.” Blaize smiled.Zack saw Devere walk away from the two as the scout returned and there were words exchanged. He looked up as Kolenka and Ace walked up to them, the two of them didn't look impressed.
“Blaize.” Ace's voice had a warning tone to it. Zack saw the blonde nodded his head at him, smile before he stood up and he was yanked away from Zack. Zack saw the scout walk past them and he plonked down next to Zack stretching his legs. “Man that hurt.” “So what's happening Essai?” Zack's elbows lent on his knees. Essai just fell back into the snow. “Fun times coming up Zack. Fun times.” Zack raised a brow. “Meaning?” “Polish up that blade it's in for one hell of a work out tomorrow.” Essai remarked. “That many huh? You going to scout more or will I actually see you in combat this time?” Zack teased. “All up to Devere it's his assessment. But just so you know this stuff it's basic 3rd Class stuff. I think they're seeing if we're ready for 3rd Class.” Essai looked at Zack. Zack blinked. “You're shitting already?” “Even though this group is divided we seem to work well we get the job done. I've scouted for 3rd Class missions before and I know that this mission is 3rd Class. “For a single 3rd Class it's take probably about a day. But the only one with Mako enhancements here is Devere he could probably clean the mess up in three hours max by himself. His training is to bring us all back alive. To make us form better as a Unit.” Essai explained. “I can work with them, fine, but for some reason Kolenka and Ace just don't like you. What'd you do?” “Nothing! Honest.” Zack exclaimed. Essai laughed. “Well at least you and Blaize are talking.” “Yeah.” Zack smiled. “Best part of today. Knowing he isn't an asshole like they are.”~*~*~*~
Twenty minutes after arriving back at ShinRa HQ, Zack fell face first into his bunk and groaning, his body ached like nothing he'd ever felt before.
Not just his body ached but his mind as well. It was the first time he had been teamed up with Blaize and Essai, without Ace or Kolenka. Those two after their stunt Devere made sure they were working with him.Blaize sat on the edge of Zack's bed and poked him.
“Nnnngh quit it.” He mumbled into his pillow. “Hey you, me, Sebastian, Kunsel and Essai have been summoned.” Blaize spoke. Zack looked up. “What now?” “Yep.” Blaize looked at him. “By Sephiroth.” Zack sat up. “What? But-” “Don't ask just get your ass up and lets move it can't keep the general waiting.” Blaize stood up. Zack got up and he looked down at the bloodied uniform. “Do we need to-?” “Nope. They said to wear whatever you got on. Be it boxers or a towel, we move now.” Blaize stood by the door. Zack followed the blonde and he stepped outside to see Kunsel, Sebastian and Essai standing there. “Hey what's going on?” “Kolenka and Ace's stunt got Devere in trouble so they're shifting the units around, giving Ace and Kolenka time to cool down.” Kunsel replied. “We report to the General, he gives us the next mission and we go as a group.” “But we just-” Zack let his head drop. “Okay okay... lets get this out of the way.”~*~*~*~
They stood in the briefing room. Sephiroth was standing behind a desk paperwork seemed to pile round the man.
Zack recognized Angeal leaning against the wall to the side and the red coat guy was sitting on the edge of a desk reading a book with a pink cover. He looked bored. More than bored, like he just wanted to murder all of them for being in his presence. “You five. Excellent job on your latest missions.” Angeal spoke from the wall. “Devere has handed in all the reports. As you're probably aware. Intakes for 3rd Class are coming up. You five have been selected from your unit.”Zack felt his heart slam against his chest and he couldn't help but open his mouth.
“No way?! Really?!” Angeal seemed to laugh. “Er I mean thanks... sir.” He rubbed behind his head. Sephiroth looked at Zack with a quirked eyebrow. “As for the mentoring program. Only you five have been chosen. Blaize, Devere will be taking over as your mentor. Sebastian you will be working with Shari from 2nd Class, Essai your mentor will be Ray from 2nd Class, Kunsel will be Temperance from 1st Class. Zack...” Sephiroth let out a breath. He gave Angeal a look like he thought the man was going mental. “Angeal here personally said he would take you under his wing.”Zack for once was speechless as he looked at Angeal.
On the mission Blaize had told him underneath Sephiroth, Angeal and Genesis were amongst the best ShinRa had. “Any questions?” Sephiroth asked. The group was silent, except for Blaize. “So when do we begin?” Sephiroth smirked. “Effective immediately. Grab your uniforms move to your new barracks and get a good nights rest you start training in the morning and by the afternoon you'll be out on your first mission as 3rd Class.” “You're all dismissed. But Zack stay behind please.” Angeal remarked. Zack watched his group of friends leave. The three 1st Class SOLDIER's were quite until the door clicked shut.
“Did I do something weird?” Zack asked. Angeal shook his head. “From Devere's reports he's asked for you to be the team leader of the group. He said you showed promise. So we're going to give you a trial on this upcoming mission.” Zack smiled, no more listening to Kolenka and he got to give orders. “Really? Cool.” He wondered what was so amusing when Sephiroth smiled. “Fair.” Sephiroth motioned to the bloodied uniform his face falling straight, a dead serious expression on his features. “Tell me what you think about being covered in blood.” “I didn't really get time to change I'm sorry about-” He began. Angeal seemed amused. “That's not what he meant.” He corrected.Zack pulled out the uniform looking at the blood, he worked on a farm most of his life so a little blood and dirt, it never really bugged him.
“Doesn't bother me... it's the enemy's blood so it's alright. So long as it's not mine I'm fine with it.” Zack couldn't help but grin. Genesis looked up from his book. But the red head did not even say a word. Angeal seemed to nod. “Valid point.” “Very well... you are dismissed.” Sephiroth spoke.~*~*~*~
Zack was going through his trunk and he looked at the infantry uniform. “That didn't take long at all.” He mused.
“I heard this first mission is going to test us. Then when we get back here we come Mako enhancements.” Blaize sounded about as excited as Zack felt. Zack saw Kolenka and Ace glaring at him from across the room. “You going to miss you're old buddies?” Blaize looked at Zack. “Not in the least.”The two moved their belongings to the new barracks and Zack was surprised it was more home like they had dividers in the room between the single beds. No more bunks. The kitchen was open plan linking it to a common area, with a television and stereo step up. It was more comfortable like a dormitory more than the shared living.
Zack picked his bed and pulled the uniform off, before grabbing a towel. Shower time before he even sat on this bed.The water pressure was great, and he was glad he didn't have to worry about sneaking showers away from Kolenka and their group.
Afterwards when he headed back to his bed he sat down. He saw Kunsel had picked the one next to him and Blaize was on the other side. “So what did they want to talk to you about?” Kunsel asked. “I'm on trial for team leader.” Zack scratched the side of his face. “It's pretty neat.” “You sure you can handle it?” Essai teased. “Alotta responsibility...” Zack shot him a look. “Hey I like you guys, it's not like I'd do something stupid to get you killed. Give me some credit here.”~*~*~*~
The trial mission seemed to go well. There was one or two hiccups but that was easily overlooked. At least according to Angeal.
It was his first time leading a group of men. Even if they were all older than him. They responded well. Everyone worked together pretty good. Angeal just gave him a pat on the back then told them to clean up before they would start the Mako infusions to enhance them into SOLDIER.Zack frowned when he saw that doctor that had done his medical in the lab where the Mako infusions were held.
“Zack this is professor Hojo.” Angeal introduced. “He will be administering yours, Blaize and Kunsel's treatment. Professor Hollander will be treating Sebastian and Essai.” “Um cool...” Zack commented. Hojo just motioned for him to sit. Zack walked up to the seat and he sat down. He blinked as Hojo strapped him tot the chair. “Hey! What gives?” “The first treatments are always like this. Precautions to prevent you hurting yourself or the doctor.” Angeal explained. “You the others will be removed from active duty for the week. You'll be staying with me, their mentors will also be looking after them to make sure some of the side effects aren't to bad.” Zack pulled at the restraints testing the strength. He couldn't pull his hands free. It was the only thing Zack didn't like was restraints. Not having control over his own body, or the situation he was placed under. The Tourniquet was wrapped round Zack's arm and he felt the doctor tapping for a vein. “Mmmm Finally. You bring me one with strong veins.” He seemed pleased.
Zack felt the prick of the needle and he flinched then watched Hojo draw out some blood before attaching the I.V for the blood to flow into a plastic bag. “Um... Angeal?” Zack looked at the blood being drained from his body. Angeal just seemed to smile amused. “Reserved in case any future transfusions are needed for you makes less fuss in finding donors at the last moment.” Zack raised a brow. “Didn't they do that when I got my medical.” “It never hurts to have more than you need my boy.” Hojo commented. “Just relax.” The doctor patted him on the head mockingly before walking to the cabinet.Zack lent his head back and tried not to look at his own blood leaving his body. “Now there will be side effects of the Mako.” Angeal warned. “Some instant some not so much. It enhances everything at first. So expect a migraine as you body adjusts. They'll give you twenty-four hours to adjust before beginning your second treatment then forty-eight hours.”
“So like getting a tattoo?” Zack asked. “One of those big ones where they can only do so much at a time, so they don't send the body into shock?” Angeal nodded. “Like that, but there is less of waiting period for the body to heal. The Mako will do that for you over time.” “Advanced healing... cool.” Zack let his eyes closed. The light headed sensation that came with his blood being withdrawn forced Zack to relax and control his breathing.
Hojo fussed behind him the clanging of medical equipment and shutting of cabinet doors. The professor walked up to Zack, he could fall asleep he was that light headed. He felt the side of his face tapped. Zack opened an eye and he looked up at Angeal. “You need to stay awake for this Zack. I'm sorry.” “Don't be worry. I'm just a little light headed.” Angeal seemed to nod. “Understandable.” Hojo stepped into Zack's peripheral vision. Zack saw the IV bag removed and placed in an ice container. He watched Hojo take out the tube before attaching another one and hang a bag up on the stand. It was three times the size of the other bag the contents were glowing a bright green.Fascinated Zack sat up to look at the bag. “Wow is that Mako?”
It was so bright and glowing it looked like one of those rave sticks he'd seen the other recruits bring back from a night out. Except not a stick but a bag full off the liquid filled in those sticks. “In a condensed for for this transfusion, yes.” Hojo replied. “You would probably end up worse for wears if we gave you straight Mako treatments. That comes later when and if you make 2nd Class.” Angeal elaborated. “So if you snap me in half will I glow?” Zack asked Angeal grinning. Angeal let out a breath. “I'm not willing to test that theory to find out.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Those junkies outside ShinRa they were exposed to pure Mako weren't they?” Zack asked remembering the mixture of glowing green and blue eyes.Angeal nodded. “A few years ago there was a Mako leak from one of the reactors. The clean up crew was fast. But some innocent bystanders did get Mako poisoning. Most of them ShinRa tended to but there were those that went worse for wears.”
Zack's face must have betrayed he thoughts a bit to much and Angeal placed a hand on his shoulder. “Remember and understand, you can't save everyone.” It was more like a word of advice from the wise. “Don't let it get to you. They are being monitored. In case they become dangerous. Right now the only people they're hurting are themselves by not wanting treatment to restore them to normal.” “Hmph...” Hojo seemed to huff. “Why would they want to?”Zack felt the intrusion through his arm. The liquid was thick and he almost doubled over. It was a weird sensation to feel the thick liquid roll through his vein and up his arm. It was like an army of ants crawling up his arm under his skin.
Zack closed his eyes and sucked in a breath. “That feels weird.” Angeal's hand squeezed his shoulder. “Keep breathing Zack. Normal breaths. Don't hold it, the heart needs to pump the Mako through your body.” Zack let out the breath in a slow shudder and he could feel it, the Mako reaching his shoulder, the chill of it inside his body made his skin tingle the hairs on the back of his neck and his arm stand up on end.Zack became completely lost he couldn't control his body anymore as it seemed to twitch.
“Mmmm what an interesting reaction...” “He's okay right?” “I haven't seen this reaction in a long time. Last time... I saw this was with-” Hojo seemed to trail off and Zack couldn't hear anymore.Zack could feel the leather glove brush against his forehead. Angeal's hand trying to soothe his body down from it's panic.
The chill of Mako ran it's course through his body and Zack hated the sensations, if he had a choice for the next treatment then he would definitely pick a less amount to ram into his system in one go. He could faintly make out his own voice cursing like a madman. His body fought the Mako intrusion treating it like an infection, but there was so much of it. Way to much so much it seemed to dominate over his other cells, and he understood now why so much Mako was required for the first treatment. The red and white blood cells would annihilate the Mako before it could be infused into his system. Mako was the intruder in his body and he willed his mind to steady, tried to calm his panicked body down, with steady even breaths. Everywhere hurt, he could feel the twitching skin on his right elbow to the muscle inside his left calf. “That's good Zack.” Angeal, he could hear his voice again. “You're doing good.” “Well he brought himself down from it... interesting.” Hojo mused. “This will take forty five minutes Zack... try to remain conscious for half of it, so we can monitor you. After than if you need to pass out just do it, but not just yet.” Angeal's voice was like an angel's at that moment and Zack could only nod his head, as he forced his body to relax and accept it.Everything seemed to happen at that moment of him relaxing, allowing the Mako to intrude his system. He could hear outside the lab a pair of heels clicking along the floor. He could hear even further to outside ShinRa to a couple in the middle of a public yet domestic dispute about him not remembering her mother's birthday.
Zack rubbed his ear on his shoulder, he looked to Angeal who was filling up a cup of water. Zack's eyes trailed to Hojo who was watching him with a morbid curiosity and Zack decided then and there he did NOT like this man... at all. He saw Hojo squeeze the bag forcing more Mako into his system faster. Zack gasped his body arched. Hojo let go of the bag and pushed his glasses up his nose before nodding. “I will have to examine your blood work my boy. The possibilities.” “Possibilities... for what?” Zack could only gasp, the forced Mako pushing the rest of the Mako through his body faster. The tingles along his arm, make him want to scratch the flesh right off his bones.Angeal shot Hojo a look before bringing the water to Zack's mouth.
“Drink we have to keep you hydrated.” Zack accepted the water and tried not to gulp it down. But it eased some of his pain. Letting himself slump back into the chair he glanced to where the I.V was connected and he could see the red mark forming, like that of a bruise and it began to glow underneath his skin. The green color mixing and overtaking the purple coloured veins. “So this is safe right?” He asked his veins were glowing like several hundred mini rave sticks had been implanted in his body. “There have been hundreds before you my boy.” Hojo scoffed. “If it wasn't safe do you think we'd still be doing this?”Angeal crouched beside the chair and Zack saw the flash of affection in the man's eyes.
“I went through this too Zack. You will be fine.” Zack nodded his head slowly. “Talk to me.. tell me something. Keep me awake...” “Distraction techniques interesting.” Hojo walked away. Zack could hear the doctor murmuring to himself but even with the advanced hearing, it seemed Hojo had perfected his mumbling to an art where even Mako enhanced SOLDIER's couldn't understand him. “Hojo's been locked up here a bit long.” Angeal smiled. “What do you want to know?” Zack felt the sensation of needing to scratch at the ants crawling under his skin and he tried to take his mind off it thinking of none scratchy things. “Is it awesome being a 1st like Seph?” Zack looked into those Mako blue eyes. Angeal chuckled. “It has it's perks. The missions get harder and harder though, that's why this treatment is necessary.” “Will the Mako be able to help me fly one day?” Zack asked. “The perks aren't THAT good kid.” Angeal chuckled. Zack decided then and there he liked Angeal. He was a good person to have as a mentor. “So when do I get to go back on duty?” Angeal seemed to chuckle at his eagerness. “Next week. This week you will be staying with me. I have the week off to make you don't have any bad side effects?” “Side effects... is that like what I'm feeling now... cause I'm reallllllly itchy!” Angeal frowned. “Hojo...” The doctor feigned innocence. “I didn't do anything, did I boy?” Zack frowned and he saw Angeal raise a brow at Hojo. “Zack you will have to learn to mask your expressions a bit better.” Angeal patted him on the arm before standing up and grabbing Hojo by the collar and pulling the doctor out of the room.Zack let out a breath, he lent back in the chair and tried to focus on eavesdropping the conversation. But he couldn't hear a thing. He saw it though beyond the glass Angeal was telling Hojo off.
“Sound proof... cheaters.” He mumbled. The door opened and Zack blinked seeing the blonde woman with the red cocktail dress on and lipstick sneak past him ducked below the glass. She pressed a finger to her lips. She opened one of Hojo's cabinets and Zack raised a brow as she stuck some of the doctors supplies into her bra, before smiling at him. “You're a cutie.” She winked at him and slipped out.Zack must have looked completely baffled when Angeal and Hojo returned. Because Angeal was by his side.
“Are you alright?” “Does Mako make you hallucinate?” he asked. “Sometimes.” Hojo replied walking to his cabinet. “Awesome. Then I really need to get laid. Cause I swear I saw a hottie in here a moment ago.” Zack commented. Hojo stopped and walked up to him. “A hottie?” “Yeah red dress, nice legs. Boobs like-” “Zack focus please.” Angeal sighed pinching the bridge of his nose. “Blonde?” Hojo asked his expression looking not very pleased. Zack nodded. “Yeah.” “Scarlett.” Hojo was in his cabinet suddenly checking his supplies. “Ooooh-kay then. Not a hallucination obviously.” Zack mused. “Is that normal?” He looked at Angeal who only sighed before nodding in defeat. To Be Continued...
