Chapter 38: The March North: The Descent Begins
The wind continued to rotate as the eight of them continued to gaze from the summit. It was a majestic and ominous wind, rotating counter-clockwise around whatever it hid. And it was calling each and every one of them.
"An old crater," Cloud finally began. "Something fell out of the sky and crashed down here, leaving a scar on the planet."
"So the planet has gathered all this energy here to heal itself?" added Tifa. "That's what that violent wind is?"
"The energy of the planet is concentrated here," Red XIII answered. "It is slowly healing its old wound."
"Sephiroth took that energy and is trying to use Meteor," Cloud said. "Next time the wound won't be so small."
"It will be a lot bigger," Tifa added.
"It could even be large enough to destroy the Planet," Red XIII pointed out. "Grandfather said it's possible. It all depends on how big Meteor is. And we won't even know for sure how big it has to be until impact."
"Well, then," began Yuffie, "I guess that means we can't stay here."
"No shit," Cid added.
With that, they began to descent down the slope. After a few yards, the bitter cold was suddenly gone, replaced by the temperate climate they had been more familiar with. The group shed their coats a they continued their descent.
"Hey," Cloud said to Tifa a few yards further down, "You're kind of quiet."
"I know," Tifa replied. "I guess it's that we're about to face Sephiroth for the last time. He's taken so much."
"I know," said Cloud. "But his days are numbered. His life ends right here."
"And then what?" asked Tifa.
"What do you mean?"
"After Sephiroth is taken care of...what do we do next?"
"We'll take care of the Shinra," Cloud replied. "We'll expose them for who they really are, get them run out of business, and put Rufus behind bars."
"And after that?" Tifa pressed.
"Who knows?" Cloud responded. "I haven't thought that far ahead."
Tifa was silent. She did have it in the back of her head lately. What would become of her friendship with him?
Her thoughts were interrupted when they came in sight of another clone, which collapsed almost immediately.
"Back...to...Seph... i...roth...," it whispered, and passed away.
The distraction left Tifa at the back of the line with Yuffie. The ninja girl saw her chance.
"Well," Yuffie began, "you can stop pretending now. Why don't you just tell him?"
"Tell him what?" asked Tifa, pretending to be dumbfounded.
"That you love him, of course!" Yuffie replied. "It's so obvious even Vincent can tell!"
"He's a good friend and everyone knows I consider him that," Tifa insisted.
"Bull and shit," Yuffie dismissed. "You love him in the sense that you want to date him, marry him, and have his baby."
"That's not true," Tifa said as the sound of wind began. And then, she suddenly blushed and smiled. She quickly turned her head away, but the damage was done.
"I knew it!" Yuffie exclaimed. "There's no need to be embarrassed!"
"Now's not the time for that," Tifa said, her head still turned away.
"Is it?" asked Yuffie as the wind grew louder. "We don't know how this is all going to end! What if this is your last chance to tell him?"
"I doubt it," Tifa replied. "And if I told him, what would he say?"
"I dunno," Yuffie replied. "But would you rather spend the rest of your life wondering what might have been?"
Tifa was silent. By now, the wind was howling, and the swirling wind was clearly visible in the background.
"Just something to think about," said Yuffie.
And then, everyone stopped. They were at the edge of the Eternal Wind Barrier. The winds roared like a train. They were spinning so fast that they were visible. Tifa and Vincent, who had the longest hair in the group, could feel it flying out of control. Nobody dared to approach them.
"They say nobody can survive these winds," Vincent said. "They could rip a person to pieces."
"But Sephiroth got through," Tifa pointed out.
"Did he?" asked Yuffie.
"Look beyond," announced Red XIII.
Occasionally, the wind was less visible. When it was, everyone could see multiple figures cloaked in black.
"Clones," Tifa said.
"There has to be some way through," Cloud said.
Cid, meanwhile, picked up a rock and threw it at the wind. Predictably, the wind picked it up and hurled it into the sky.
"That won't weaken the wind wall," Cait Sith pointed out.
"Shut up," Cid growled as he picked up another rock and threw it, yielding the same results.
"Don't you have anything better to do?"
"I said SHUT THE FUCK UP!" Cid retorted.
Almost as if in response, everyone heard a roaring sound. But it was not the Wind Barrier. This one was coming from behind them.
Cloud spun around in time to see the Shinra 2000 breach the wind with the greatest of ease.
MEANWHILE, ABOVE IN THE SKY...
Virtually every high-ranking Shinra official was on the bridge of the Shinra 2000.
"So, I finally found you," said Rufus as he gazed through the window of the bridge. Nobody could see the exterior, but Rufus was confident that this was it.
"This is incredible!" cackled Scarlet nearby.
"This is the Promised Land the President has been searching for!" Heidegger added.
"But, I'll be the one who gets it," Rufus gloated. "Sorry, old man."
"Will there be anything to eat?" asked Palmer.
Everyone was dead silent. For about thirty seconds, everyone stared at him.
"You ruined it!" Rufus finally said.
Meanwhile, in a far corner of the bridge, Hojo sat alone, quietly talking to himself.
"That land is no one's," he muttered to himself. "It's where the Reunion will take place. They will all gather here." He paused. "I wonder if we'll see Sephiroth?"
BACK AT THE BARRIER...
"We're in last place," Cait Sith sighed.
"SONS OF BITCHES!" Cid shouted as he picked up another rock and threw it. But this time, something different happened. The wind suddenly became less visible.
And the rock passed harmlessly through.
Then, the wind became visible again.
"So that's it!" said Cloud.
"We need to cross when the wind is calm," added Tifa, "or we'll get swept off!"
"I suppose I'll be the guinea pig," Cait Sith volunteered.
"Of course," Barret agreed. "Since it's not the real you!"
"Are you ever going to tell us who you really are, anyway?" asked Yuffie.
"When the time is right," Cait Sith replied.
"I say he's Heidegger!" suggested Barret.
"Nah," insisted Yuffie. "He's Hojo. Only he would be smart enough to create something like him."
"Who said it's a he?" asked Red XIII. "Maybe it's Scarlet."
"He has Palmer's personality," Vincent suggested.
"My guess is Reeve," said Tifa.
"I say he's the big guy himself," insisted Cloud. "Aren't you, Rufus?"
Cait Sith sighed. "All I'll say is that one of you got it right. The rest of you were way off."
At that moment, the wind became less visible. Wasting no time, the cat charged through the weak wind. Everyone looked on, waiting for him to be swept off his feet.
But he wasn't.
"I'm through, you guys!" he shouted. "Hurry up!"
The remaining seven ran through, reaching a safe distance just as the winds picked up again.
"You're welcome," said Cait Sith.
Beyond the wall, it was silent. The roaring of the mighty wind was gone. Nobody could even feel the wind on their skin.
"Eye of the storm?" suggested Tifa.
"It looks like it," Cloud replied.
"GUYS!" shouted Yuffie. "LOOK! WE GOT HIM!"
In the direction away from the barrier, she could see clones forming a line. To her shock, it was a line to die. Sephiroth was waiting at the front, slaughtering them one by one.
"This is the end," he said solemnly. "For all of you."
"Sephiroth!" shouted Cloud as he drew his sword. "This is the end!" With that, he immediately began to charge.
Sephiroth made no effort to defend himself as Cloud closed in. He simply looked on. He could see the vengeful rage in Cloud's eyes as he drew nearer.
One hundred feet away. Seventy-five. Fifty.
Finally, Sephiroth spoke. "You're right," he said. "This is the end of this body's usefulness."
Finally, Cloud reached his destination, and swung his sword with all his might.
Immediately, everyone saw a flash of red that lasted less than a second. When the flash was over, Sephiroth was gone.
"He disappeared!?" Cloud exclaimed.
"He might still be nearby," warned Tifa.
"Our purpose is to deliver the Black Materia to our master," a voice suddenly spoke in Cloud's mind.
"Our?" asked a puzzled Cloud.
"Those who carry Jenova's cells," the voice continued.
"Master!?" Cloud asked suddenly.
Tifa gave an extremely nervous look.
"Of course, Sephiroth," Cloud continued.
Before Tifa could say anything, Sephiroth leaped down from the sky. And then, he quickly changed form. In a matter of seconds, he was no longer human. He was Jenova.
"Fuck me!" shouted Cid. "How many of these things are there?!"
"One," Cloud replied. "I'll explain later!"
This new Jenova began to breathe fire from its mouth, causing Cloud to dodge immediately. As he repositioned himself, he noticed Tifa had joined him.
"Tifa?!" he exclaimed.
"I'm fighting by your side, Cloud," she announced. "Whether you like it or not!"
She immediately charged the creature, punching and kicking it.
The creature, seeing its chance, aimed its head at Tifa and inhaled.
Cloud used the opportunity, drawing his sword and slashing its front. The creature fell forward to the floor in pain.
Quickly, Tifa ran behind the fallen Jenova creature and pounced on its head, catching it between her legs. She quickly squeezed her legs together, causing the creature to struggle in vain to breathe. But it was no use. The creature fell dead in thirty seconds flat.
Tifa then rose to her feet. "Mess with Cloud, mess with me," she said while catching her breath.
Cloud smiled briefly, but then realized the reality of the situation. "Jenova's cells," he began. "So that's what this is all about. The Jenova Reunion."
"Not Sephiroth!?" Tifa gasped between her breaths. "You mean all this time it wasn't Sephiroth we've been after?"
"Yes and no," Cloud replied. "It's not his body, but it is his soul. I'll explain later. Right now, the only thing I'm thinking about is beating Sephiroth. He's here. The real Sephiroth is just beyond here. It's both incredibly wicked and cruel. But it's releasing a powerfully strong will from deep within this planet's wound."
And then, he realized that he needed to acknowledge the elephant in the room.
On the ground, next to the dead creature, was the Black Materia. And there was nothing to prevent them from taking it.
