Sifting Through The Pieces
Chapter 3
Something woke Cid up from a sound sleep and he sat up, looking around. Vincent was still at his side and unconscious, and thanks to the lack of light coming in through the small window in his cabin, the pilot knew that it was night.
Someone knocked on the door again, reminding Cid why he’d been awoken to begin with. Carefully, he climbed over Vincent and off the bed to answer. He cracked open the door. "Yeah? What the hell you want?"
One of his crewmen was standing on the other side. "Sorry to bother you, Sir, but there have been a number of earthquakes while we’ve been sitting here all day and some of us are worried."
Cid scratched the back of his head and narrowed his eyes. "Then get us the fuck off the ground. You had to wake me up for that?"
"Sir, we needed your order to do so."
"God damn it." He shrugged. "Fine, yeah, then get us in the air and head toward Rocket."
"Yes, Sir." The man turned and walked off.
Closing the door, Cid huffed in annoyance before flipping on the light. He gazed over at where Vincent lay, still asleep and blissfully unaware. Cid went over and sat on the edge of the bed next to him. "Vince?"
The gunslinger didn’t respond at all-- there wasn’t even a break in the slow breaths he was drawing.
He tried again with a little more force behind his voice. "Come on, Vince?"
One crimson eye opened. "Yes?"
"How’re you doin’?" Cid asked, reaching up and touching the side of Vincent’s face.
"Getting better." Vincent closed his eye again and felt the completeness of his exhaustion wash over him. "I’ll sleep for a day or two while I recuperate."
"Okay, as long as you’re gettin’ better." Cid offered his submissive a faint smile, but knew that Vincent was already asleep again.
The pilot remained in place, looking over Vincent’s body. It was still marred with bruises and cuts, although he had to admit that they did honestly seem a little improved after the few hours they had slept. His gaze was drawn over to Vincent’s left arm.
The once polished brass that covered the gunslinger’s cybernetic limb was horribly dented, with portions of the metal covering ripped away completely. The fingers that remained were bent and broken, with two of them missing completely.
Having his uncontrollable need to repair anything mechanical that he saw amiss, Cid began to wonder exactly how complicated the inner workings of Vincent’s left arm were. Some of it, at the very least, had to be made up of parts he could fix and he leaned over Vincent to get a closer look-- hoping that there was some way to disengage it from the remaining human part of the gunman’s arm.
It looked like it might.
Cid, figuring that he had nothing to lose reached over and lifted a small access plate from the inside of upper portion of the prosthetic. His lips produced a satisfied smirk when he spotted a small button labeled Release.
Biting his bottom lip and hoping that he wasn’t going to hurt Vincent in any way by doing so, Cid gently pressed the button and heard a series of clicks and slight mechanical sounds, before the entire prosthetic moved slightly and then went silent. With his hands shaking in his anxiety over how Vincent might react if he woke up to find his arm missing, Cid grabbed the damaged item and sure enough, was able to pull it away from the connector that had been permanently affixed to the remaining part of Vincent’s arm.
Cid sat there and considered the limb in his hands for a few minutes before looking back at Vincent. Seeing the other man there without anything beyond the middle of his upper left arm made the pilot feel uneasy and he pulled the blanket covering Vincent up a little higher, so that it wouldn’t show.
"Okay," Cid said to himself, knowing that Vincent wouldn’t hear, "I’m going to do what I can to fix this thing… I owe it to you for abandoning you here. Damn it, Vince, you have no idea how fuckin’ guilty I’m feelin’ over that."
Sighing, Cid then got up from the bed and moved to place the mechanical appendage onto the table in his room before retrieving his tool kit and sitting down. Having been designed by a madman, Cid was fairly confident that he was going to see some rather unconventional electronics and mechanics within. He had a few moments of reservation before getting to work, though. This wasn’t an engine or part of a vehicle of any type. This was part of a living being-- one that he happened to be in love with. If he ended up unable to repair it…
Well, Cid didn’t want to think about that. He had to fix it.
"I’m probably going to be spending the next two weeks sifting through the pieces of this thing, Vince," he mumbled as he pulled a screwdriver over, ready to see what he could do.
A/N-- Sorry about the delay in update speed, there. As always, I WILL finish the story I start. I’m just kicking around what I want all to happen in this one J
