The house was furious with activity the morning of Mr. Loire's arrival. Maids were running back and forth, dusting and re-dusting anything and everything, perfecting the mass amounts of Christmas decorations, and making other final preparations for the businessman's arrival.
Squall had hardly slept, and so standing in the hall his eyes were blurry and he wasn't seeing everything focused while he was watching Ms. Trepe re-adjust Maggie's locks of curls. Zoned out, he mechanically accepted Maggie's hand as she stood next to him, looking at him with a worried expression.
He jumped when he felt someone put an arm around his waist, though it didn't take long to realize it was Seifer. "Try and stay awake Princess, you look like a zombie right now." Seifer said with a chuckle, while he stepped away from Squall to straighten the sleeves of his shirt. "How do I look?"
Squall raised a skeptical eyebrow. Seifer's short blonde hair had been slicked back at one time during the morning, but stubborn blonde strands had fallen over his forehead and were looking as rugged as ever, not that it was a bad appearance for Seifer. He was wearing a white dress shirt, the sleeves wide and undone, the shirt itself unbuttoned several buttons down to reveal some smooth chest. His usual silver choker was flashy around his neck, and a pair of baggy black jeans that rode Seifer's hips in a sensual manner.
"Like hell, Almasy." Squall said tiredly, while he changed his attention to pushing some of the hair that was falling in his eyes away.
"Daddy!" Maggie said in a scolding tone, before she clung closer to Squall's leg, almost hiding behind it as she looked shyly up at the big blonde. "You look very dashing Mr. Almasy." She said politely, making Quistis laugh as she straightened to deal with pressing problems in the kitchens.
"Thank you Meghan." Seifer said with a smile, before he turned his attention back to Squall. "Remember Leonhart, both of you are Almasy now." He flashed a very artificial smile that was stiff enough to make Squall wince.
"Please, don't remind me." He said, not bothering to return the smile. Seifer opened his mouth to say something, but he heard the crunch of gravel coming from the driveway and held off any further comments.
"Alright, remember everything?"
After Maggie nodded and Squall glared, Seifer clapped his hands together and grinned. "Good, because it's show time!"
---
Squall had been impressed by the man's choice in vehicle when he had looked out the window after Seifer went out to greet them. Not because it was overly flashy or expensive looking, but because it was a simple S.U.V, every inch of space obviously necessary as three men came out of it, a lot of luggage visible. One man was of a big build, Squall suspecting that he was over 7 feet tall, the other man was probably a few inches taller then Squall was, with exotically dark skin, his long hair pulled into three thin braids over his back that had colorful beads at the ends of them, dressed in something that resembled snakeskin.
The last man was the man that Squall immediately decided was Mr. Loire, and he quickly concluded that he was nothing like what he had expected. Rajin and Fujin had spoke about how Mr. Loire was a very prude and proud businessman. And yet the man who was walking up the lane was poorly dressed for the weather conditions. A t-shirt with an aqua dress shirt pulled overtop and left unbuttoned, tan slacks and ... flip flops?
Squall scoffed before he turned away from the window, deciding that he would never understand the way of businessmen. Turning to Maggie he gave the best semblance of a soft smile as he could when he felt like breaking something. "Now remember Maggie, best behavior." Maggie beamed and nodded quickly, before she took Squall's hand and followed him to the bottom of the steps where they waited. The double doors of Seifer's home opened and the four men came in. Mr. Loire was laughing loudly at something that he had apparently found very amusing. At closer range Squall noticed the green eyes and dark hair that fell a little past his shoulders, tied back in a pony-tail. He didn't look his age, as there weren’t any wrinkles in his skin, and there were very few grays in his hair.
"Ahhh, it's the other Mr. Almasy, and his beautiful daughter!" Mr. Loire exclaimed happily after Seifer had moved away from the center of his attention for a moment. Squall nodded curtly, about to say something although he was distracted when Maggie tugged at his sleeve.
"Is he an angel?" Maggie asked quietly, though her tone was loud enough for Mr. Loire to hear, and the man promptly laughed.
"Oh, far from it." The dark-skinned man said as he stepped out from behind Laguna, carrying a few bags and the big man came in after, carrying the rest with ease.
"Oh!" Seifer said, "You didn't have to bring that in yourself, one of the servants could have..."
"Nonsense!" Mr. Loire said, his tone scolding. "These two dead-weights need to earn their keep, eh?" He nudged Ward, who promptly nudged back with enough force that made the much smaller man stagger, holding his side. Maggie giggled and Mr. Loire smiled.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person, Mr. Loire." Squall said politely as Mr. Loire's helpers moved past him towards the stairs, led by Quistis. "I have heard a lot about you."
As Squall spoke Seifer fixed him with an intent gaze, and when he finished his very formal greeting Seifer beamed and walked towards him, looping an arm around his waist before Squall could find a way to subtly escape.
Mr. Loire smiled at them, before he shook his head. "Call me Laguna." He said, before he pointed up the stairs where his accomplices had went. "And that was Kiros and Ward who came in with me, no need to get formal, we're all friends here!"
Seifer was smiled and nodded, and Squall remained quiet, trying to move away from Seifer's grasp. Seifer retaliated by nuzzling his nose into Squall's neck in an affectionate manner. Squall forced himself to not pull away, listening to Seifer's amused noise at his suffering.
It was then when Maggie made a meek noise from behind Squall, looking up at Seifer with a curious expression.
"Mr. Laguna I thought you were old." Maggie suddenly said with a small look of confusion on her face. "Mr. Rajin said you were but you don't look old to me."
Laguna laughed, scratching his head in a somewhat awkward manner as he grinned. "Oh, I guess I am doing well for my age then hm?" He said, before squatting down in front of Maggie, leaving Squall to start pinching at Seifer's arm while the man wasn't looking. "So you’re name is Meghan right?" After Maggie enthusiastically nodded Laguna smiled. "Well you have two wonderful parents, don't you? I think that I will enjoy my visit here." He said before standing up, happily clapping his hands together.
Seifer grinned, having been forced to release Squall a few moments ago he looked at his watch. "Well we have a few hours before lunch will be ready, perhaps you would be willing to look at some of the offers I have prepared for you?" Squall sighed.
"Oh!" Laguna said, waving his hand with a laugh. "We don't need to do that so quickly, we have plenty of time later this week, right?" He said cheerfully, not noticing the expression on Seifer's face that hinted that he wanted to get it done now, though he decided to drop the subject.
"Very well then, perhaps I should give you a tour of the house so you know you're way around?" Seifer said pleasantly, "And maybe get acquainted with some of the people here."
Laguna grinned. "Yes yes, perhaps Maggie can join us and introduce me to this, 'Mr. Rajin'."
Seifer laughed and Maggie beamed, unaware that she may have gotten Rajin in trouble. Squall remained silent, standing away from the rest of the group.
Seifer directed Laguna up the stairs to where Ward and Kiros had gone off to, Maggie leading the way and proudly telling Laguna about her room and the new doll that Quistis had gotten her. Seifer dropped behind long enough to look at Squall.
"Are you going to join us?" Seifer asked with a smirk, "Maggie seems quite enthralled with him, perhaps you should have another father-daughter talk about how some angels don't have wings...?"
Squall didn't bite, instead he ignored Seifer and headed towards the kitchen. Seifer sighed and turned to call after him.
"If you're going to do something else, perhaps doing some Christmas shopping would be a decent idea?" Squall paused and turned to face Seifer.
"As a 'family' we should buy gifts for each other." Squall said, sighing as he put a hand to his head. "I can find something for Maggie and say it was from you."
Seifer nodded. "Just what I was about to suggest." He reached into his pocket, before he pulled out his wallet, sorting through the compartments before he withdrew a slick card. "Use my bank card." He said, before scoffing. "The code word is 'dick'."
Squall groaned while he took the card. "What are you, seven?"
Seifer only beamed before he looked back up the stairs. "Alright, I'm going to catch up to Laguna. Find Quistis and she'll get Watts to drive you." Squall nodded, and after a short silence Seifer turned to walk towards the stairs. He paused a few moments after Squall turned around.
"Leonhart, get yourself and Maggie something nice, alright?"
Squall gave Seifer an odd look, before he nodded and walked away.
---
Squall was overwhelmed when Watts had met him outside the house. The man seemed to speak a mile a minute, and was ready to tell him everything he needed to know about anything. All the while politely addressing him as 'Sir'. After being coaxed into the car, Squall had decided to let Watts choose where they would go, and soon he was walking into a mall on a side of town that Squall had rarely even seen.
"Donavons is the place to go for all men's clothing, Sir." Squall had been somewhat annoyed when the limousine driver had chosen to come in with him, though he decided it was unfair to expect him to wait outside.
"What would you suggest as a gift for Mr. Almasy?" Squall asked after he looked through some of the windows of the shops, not knowing where to start and already feeling oddly defeated by the whole process. Watts made a thoughtful sound before he nodded.
"Sir Almasy likes jewelry, rings, chokers, watches and the like." Watts said, before he frowned. "Though he usually receives them from those who aren’t close to him. Coming from his husband, perhaps he would like something different, eh Sir?"
Squall blinked. "Like what?"
Watts beamed. "Perhaps something intimate, Sir? Even chocolates or something romantic?"
Squall sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I think I'll stick with the jewelry." He muttered.
---
The mall was soon crowded with the Christmas shopping bustle, though unlike the malls that Squall was used to visiting, the ritzy people were everywhere. Furs and jewels dripped off those who passed Squall by, and even with a uniformed driver at his side, he felt like and knew that he didn't belong. After being lead from store to store, Squall had been able to easily pick out a doll for Maggie, along with a dress for Seifer to use as a gift. While it wasn't his own money, Squall was still overly-picky about prices, and it wasn't until Watts had thoroughly chastised him for it that he refrained from looking at price tags.
Squall had gotten himself a ring for Seifer to use as a gift to him, the silver shape of it reminding him of the wedding ring he had once worn for Rinoa. He was however, completely stuck on what to get for Seifer's gift. Watt's ideas only became sappier and sappier, and after he pointed to a leopard print thong, Squall refused to hear any more of his suggestions.
Trinkets and knick-knacks were useless, and while he would have loved to give Seifer something like a paper-weight, he continually reminded himself that he had to make it seem plausible. He was scowling at Christmas cards when he was broken out of his thoughts.
"Belated Christmas shopping I see?" Squall turned to see Kiros standing next to him, arms folded over his chest looking rather amused. "It never seems to end, does it?"
After a few moments Squall nodded, before he turned back to the shelves. He winced when Watts spoke up.
"We're befuddled over what to get for Mr. Almasy, Sir." He said with a curt nod, before he grinned. "I still stand by the thong—" He was cut off by an icy glare from Squall, though Kiros laughed.
"Ah, I suppose it gets challenging year after year. Though it has only been a few for you two, hasn't it?"
Squall frowned before he nodded. "This will be our third Christmas together." Kiros nodded before he smiled.
"It is easier, to buy gifts for a female spouse, isn't it?"
Squall nodded before he realized he was doing it, though he quickly stopped with a scowl. "Rinoa...was easy to please." Squall said stiffly. "She also constantly hinted about what she wanted that year."
Kiros nodded. "I apologize but I do not know much about ex-wife." The dark-skinned man said, while he picked up a book titled "Barbeque for Dummies" and examined the back cover. "If it is not too personal, what motivated you to break up with her?"
Squall immediately bristled. "We didn't break up." He said, carefully controlling the temper in his voice. "She died in a car accident a year before Seifer and I got married."
Kiros immedietly bowed. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize. It must have been very hard for you and Maggie as well I assume?"
Squall nodded tightly.
"You are very lucky to have found someone to help you through the tough times though." Kiros said with a small smile in his voice. "Mr. Almasy seems to be a very good husband."
Squall nodded again, though he could no longer will himself to pick things off the shelves to examine them. He didn't have anyone to get him through tough times. Perhaps that was part of the original problem. "Maggie and I have enjoyed our time with him greatly." Squall said easily, as this was practically rehearsed. "Seifer and I had been friends before Rinoa died, however we grew close and were drawn together after her death. I think it was fate." It had been rehearsed, written on a white note-card for Squall to memorize, along with several other lies.
Kiros laughed. "You should use a little more emotion when you talk, or someone could think that you don't mean it." Squall looked at Kiros with an almost begging gaze, willing the amused man to realize the truth of what he had just said.
However Squall turned away and sighed. "I've never been good with words." He said quietly, "That is Seifer's forte."
Kiros made a knowing sound before he looked curiously at Squall. "It would seem that business is also Seifer's forte. He has quite the track record, you know."
Squall did his best to give a confused look. "Oh? Yes, I don't get very involved in Seifer's business ventures, it's all a little...over my head."
Kiros smiled. "Well you see, Laguna is going through a crisis with his company at the moment. He needs to sell his company or else he will be bought out anyways by a horrible place called Ultimecia Industries. He's more than worried about his employees; it really means the world to him."
Squall nodded, suddenly respecting the man, even though the impression he had made was that of a bumbling moron.
"So you see, I want to make sure that Laguna gives his company to the right person, and not to someone who will do as much damage as Ultimecia Industries would."
Squall's throat went dry, and he fought back the urge to say 'You're looking in the wrong place.' After a short silence, he forced a pleasant smile, trying to callous himself to think that he needed the money.
God, now he was just as bad as Seifer was.
"I think that Seifer is the one you are looking for." Squall said quietly.
---
It was hard for Squall to talk with Kiros after that, and when they had arrived back at the house (Squall still hadn't found the right gift for Seifer), he decided that it was best if he retired to the bedroom and got some rest.
He was disappointed to see that his things had been moved from the side room into the main room. Seifer had insisted that they would have to sleep in the same bed in case there was a situation where someone came in. While Squall wasn't stupid enough to believe Seifer's excuse, he didn't have the will to argue with Seifer when so much money was hanging over his head.
Pulling off his jacket and letting it fall into the chair next to the bed, Squall sighed and shook his head, raking slim fingers through his hair until he collapsed onto the bed.
Curling into a ball without bothering to get under the covers, Squall prayed for a pleasant dream of Rinoa, unfortunately it didn't come.
---
When Squall opened the door he was horrified to see the well-dressed woman with a clipboard standing there. He already knew who she was, before she even opened her mouth to introduce herself. He had been afraid that they were going to come for years now, afraid that he would be declared unfit to be a father. She introduced herself as someone working for child and family services, said that what she was here to do was for the benefit of both him and Maggie. She did it all in a very regal manner, even as she told Squall that he was unfit to be a parent.
"No! Don't take her away!" Squall shouted as the woman reached out and took Maggie's hand, starting to lead her out the door without looking back at Squall. The woman turned on him, laughing at him as she spoke.
"You don't deserve to keep her! You made her pretend to be a horrible man's daughter just so you could make money! Anyone who would use their children in such a way..."
"I was trying to do what was best for both of us!" Squall said, shaking his head. "I can take care of her now, I can take care of us!"
The woman laughed. "As what? A whore to a rich man?" Squall's eyes widened as he shook his head.
"No! I'm not a whore to him!"
"He didn't think so!"
Her voice echoed as she walked out the door into darkness, Maggie still visible after she had gone however, glowing in the dark.
"Daddy, I'm scared." She whispered, "The angels are falling, and nobody is there to catch them. You're hurting all the angels and you aren’t doing anything to stop it!" She shouted angrily, before she too faded into darkness.
Squall shook his head, shouting. "No Maggie, don't go! I'll protect the angels for you..." He whispered, falling to his knees as he stared at the door that lead into that darkened void. It was as he was staring helplessly into the darkness when he seen her.
Dark brown hair fell to her shoulders, chocolate brown eyes looking at him sadly. She had wings, beautiful white wings that stretched out behind her. Squall knew immediately that it was his wife, that it was Rinoa. "Squall, don't let him touch you." She whispered.
Squall shook his head. "I'm not his whore! They can't take her away!"
The angel in front of him smiled. "No Squall, they won't take her away. It's just a dream. But please...don't let him touch you."
Squall frowned, confused before he shook his head. "No, I wont!" he said, before stumbling to his feet, running to the door. "Rinoa I won't!" He reached out to touch her, but the moment his fingers should have collided with her, she was gone, and he was there at the threshold of the door, teetering into the darkness.
He tried to draw backwards, but lost his balance and fell down into the void that everyone else had disappeared into. He waited to hit ground, to wake up, to do something, but nothing happened.
And then, he felt something firm on either side. It took him a moment, but he realized he was laying on a bed, and someone was pressed firm against him, running his hands over his body, violating his lips with kisses and claiming him in such away that Squall growled. He knew that body; he knew those dirty hands, and those treacherous lips.
Seifer pulled back to laugh at him, and said something that Squall couldn't hear, despite the small distance between them. The laughter was echoing through Squall's mind though, and finally he couldn't take it anymore. "I hate you!" He shouted, before he sat up quickly and threw a punch at the laughing face.
---
"Dammit, Squall!"
Squall's eyes snapped open, and instantly reality swarmed back into him. He looked around to find himself still in Seifer's bedroom, sitting up on Seifer's bed, however the blonde was several feet away from him, currently clutching the side of his face. Squall looked down to see red across his knuckles, and it dawned on him quickly what part of the dream had been true, and what had simply been his imagination.
"Sorry." Squall said, sighing heavily while rubbing his knuckles. "I was dreaming."
Seifer growled. "Well I figured that much out. You were tossing and turning and shouting shit so I went to wake you up. Then you yelled "I hate you!" and punched me. Fuck, I was only trying to help." Squall apologized again quietly, before he looked up from his hands.
"Maybe, you should get some ice for that."
Seifer narrowed his eyes and looked at Squall, before he sighed and nodded. After briefly visiting the intercom on the side of the wall to send for some, he tenderly touched the mark. "That's the second time you've hit me." Seifer grumbled before he went to sit on the other side of the bed. Squall figured that the apologies would get tiring a third time.
After a silence, Squall finally spoke up.
"What are you going to do with Esthar?"
Seifer rolled his head back to look at Squall through the corner of his eyes. "What?"
"Esthar Enterprises, Mr. Loire's company. What are you going to do with it?"
Seifer laughed. "Damn, I was talking to Laguna about it today, the technology he has being developed is insanely advanced, like, years ahead of what is being developed now. He has the competitors really edgy. One of them, Ultimecia Inc, wants to get rid of it."
Squall frowned. "Kiros told me something about them."
Seifer nodded. "Yeah well, the owner of that company is this woman who I've been dealing with for a long time. She's offering me 50 million. She offered double that to Loire but he turned it down. The problem is he's in financial problems since he's been funding most of the research by himself and they aren’t ready to produce yet, so he needs to sell. Ultimecia wants it but he won't give it to them, so Ultimecia has agreed to pay me triple what they offered Loire if I can get it from Loire to sell to them."
Suddenly Squall froze, shooting up to his feet. "What?! You're going to sell Laguna's company to the people he doesn't want to have it?" He exclaimed, fighting back rage.
Seifer looked somewhat surprised at the outburst, before he shrugged. "I'm making one hell of a profit out of it. After this deal is done I'm going to be able to retire." Though he wouldn’t, he loved the rush that business gave him too much to give it up.
Squall shook his head. "But, Laguna! Do you hate him that much?"
Seifer laughed. "No, he's a fool but I don't hate him. It's just business, nothing personal. I'm giving him enough money that he'll be able to retire and live in luxury for the rest of his life, he's not getting a bad deal really."
"But what about all the people that work for him?" Squall said with a sigh, remembering the way that Kiros had spoke about Laguna's love of his employees, the way it had felt to be fired from the only job that you knew.
"Ultimecia Industries has their own workers, most of Esthar's employees will be let go."
Squall closed his eyes, backing away several steps and forcing his mouth to stay closed. "You're...you're horrible!" He said, shaking his head while he put a hand to his temple. "I can't go through with this, I can't let you do this."
Seifer was at his feet in an instant. "Yes, you can. Remember our deal? You're bound by contract and you're stuck in this."
Squall shook his head before he sneered. "No, I can tell Laguna what you're going to do, and then he won't give you the company. I'll walk away without a guilty conscience and that will be that."
Seifer laughed. "Oh? And then what? You'll live off the chickenfeed that this country calls the family allowance? Remember Squall, that there is more money riding on this then you've ever seen in your life. I wouldn't go and blow this opportunity for something as stupid as guilt."
Squall remained silent, before he shook his head.
"You don’t have a conscience, so you wouldn't understand. You walk through your life with everyone handing you what you want on a silver fucking platter, and you never have to think about what other people had to do to prepare it for you. You haven't thought about anyone else but yourself in your entire life." Squall shouted, before he laughed. It was a sick, and rather defeated laugh. "Someday when you realize that you're all alone, that money won't keep you company...When everybody hates you for what you've done, you'll realize." Squall said, before he started walking towards the door.
Seifer laughed. "Oh yes, and you Princess, what do you have? The only true emotion you've once showed me the entire time you've been here is anger. You push everybody away and don't let anybody close to you. You're so uptight you're going to shatter at any minute. Who do you have Squall? What makes you so god damn above me? You work your entire life and yet never accomplish anything meaningful." Seifer sneered.
Squall bowed his head, considering what Seifer had just said. But something clicked, and he looked up and met Seifer's eyes with poison in his glare.
"But the difference is; I'm already used to it."
Squall left the room and slammed the door closed behind him. When Laguna, down the stairs with Quistis and Maggie looked at him curiously, Squall only muttered that he needed some air.
