Chapter 4: Shatters Illusions
Zack came
running out of the inn when he heard the screaming. He had been worried about
Sephiroth when the older man had locked himself away in Shin-Ra’s mansion
secret lab. He had been slowly losing himself in the books before he
disappeared, startling Zack. Zack could only stare at the sight before him…it
was the worst thing he had ever seen.
“NO!” Zack
exclaimed as he looked around at the burning buildings. Bodies littered the
ground, children and adults alike. The water tower had collapsed and the water
had been spilled. Shops, houses and inn were on fire. The village that was one
graceful was now nothing but burned ruins.
Zack looked
around until he found an infantryman lying a few feet away from the steps that
led the way to the mountains. Rushing over to him, he turned Cloud onto his
back.
“Cloud…”
Cloud blinked his eyes opened and met Zack’s eyes. “What happened?”
“Sephiroth…”
Cloud groaned out before shaking his head, “something has gone wrong…” Cloud
closed his eyes as pain racked through him. Lowering Cloud back onto the
ground, Zack turned around to face the stairs only to see Sephiroth standing in
the middle of the flames.
“Sephiroth!”
Zack shouted. Sephiroth slowly raised his head and looked at Zack with emotionless
green eyes and an evil smile on his face, one that had Zack taking a step back.
“What have you done?!”
Sephiroth
just turned around and walked off, leaving a trail of destruction in his path.
Unwilling to let Sephiroth get away unanswered, Zack chased after him, fighting
off any monsters that crossed his path, trying to stop him when he got a
message. Pulling out the handset, he accessed his mail only for his face to
pale when he saw it was from Cloud.
‘Zack, Where are you?!’ the message
asked. ‘Tifa and her father went after
Sephiroth – you have to stop them!’
“Shit!” Zack
cursed as he ran up the mountains, speeding up as fast as he could.
“Father!” Tifa cried as she hurried over to her father
who was lying on the stairs just outside the Mako Reactor.
“Tifa…” he
choked out as she knelt down beside him, taking his hand.
“Hold on
Father, I’ll get help,” Tifa promised him but the man shook his head.
“No…Tifa…it’s
too late,” he whispered but Tifa was persistent.
“No, it’s
not Father,” Tifa told him as tears filmed her red eyes…the ones she got from
her mother. “I have something to tell you…you are supposed to be there for my
wedding, my children…” Mr. Lockhart laughed.
“I will my
daughter; I’ll always be by your side, no matter what…” Mr. Lockhart told her
just before his hand went limp in her hand.
“Father…”
Tifa whispered only to bow her head as tears ran down her cheeks. “NO!” she
laid his body back onto the ground before a glint of sliver caught the corner
of her eye. Turning her head, she saw the long thin sword…the same one that
Sephiroth uses.
Her head
came up, fire lighting up her red eyes as she stood up, strode over to the
sword and yanked it out from the ground before making her way into the Mako
Reactor wanting revenge on the man who had just destroyed her hometown,
destroyed her happiness and killed her father.
She found
Sephiroth standing at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at the door that
would lead him to Jenova. Sephiroth turned when he heard footsteps making their
way over to him.
“How could
you?!” Tifa demanded as she looked at Sephiroth, holding the Masamune that
belonged to the sliver haired male but he had left it behind when he had sent
the final stroke that killed her father, leaving her an orphanage. “What did we
ever do to you that you had to destroy our home town?”
“Nothing you
would understand,” Sephiroth brushed her off. “Give me back my Masamune and you
can walk away.” He held out his hand but it just increased Tifa’s anger.
“Damn you!”
Tifa screamed as she jumped up, swinging the Masamune but Sephiroth was quicker
as he sidestepped the attack and pulled the sword out of Tifa’s hand before
swinging it himself over her chest. The attack left a long clean cut under her
right breast up to the top of her left breast.
Tifa gasped
as she felt herself falling backward and her front hit the ground with a hard
thud.
“Stupid
girl,” Sephiroth muttered before he turned on his heel and strode through the
once locked door under the sign ‘Jenova’, leaving Tifa alone on the ground as
she thought back to when she and Cloud had made the promise just before he left
for Shin-Ra company.
“Cloud…”
Tifa gritted her teeth as tears came to her eyes. “When I am in danger, you
will come; didn’t you promise me that?” her eyes closed.
Zack burst
through the doors only to stop short when he saw Tifa’s body lying on the
ground. Understanding dawn on him as he hurried closer to Tifa, hoping that she
was still alive.
“Tifa!” Zack
hurried over to the lain body. He knelt down beside her as Tifa’s eyes opened
and met mako blue tinted lavender eyes.
“Zack…”
“You were
hurt by Sephiroth, right, Tifa?”
“You came to
this village just to investigate, right?” Tifa asked. Zack’s brows furrowed,
confused to where this was going. “That’s why I brought you guys here. That was
all it was…how did it turn out like this?”
“Tifa…”
tears were clear in Zack’s voice as he realised where this was going. He
reached out to touch her but Tifa turned her head away, giving Zack the cold
shoulder. Zack dropped his hand and tightened it into a fist as he bowed his
head before he got up and moved over to the stairs only to stop when he heard
Tifa speak once more.
“I
hate…Shin-Ra, SOLDIERs and you, I hate you all,” Tifa choked out, wishing that
Cloud had been the one to come, that he was holding her. Zack bowed her head.
“Sorry,”
Zack whispered. “I won’t ask you to forgive me…but, please, allow me to atone
for my sins.” Zack ran up the stairs, raising his buster sword before he sliced
the metal doors opened, causing it to slam down before he stepped through the
entrance and looked up to see Sephiroth was standing in front of a metal suit
that was in front of a tank fill with green liquid.
“Mother…let’s
take back this planet together. I have a good idea. Let’s go to the promise
land, mother,” Sephiroth told the metal suit.
“Sephiroth!”
Zack shouted his grip tightening on the handle of the sword as rage pounded
through him. It wasn’t supposed to turn out like this, they were just meant to
investigate, make sure that everything was okay and ship back out to Midgar
where he could see Aerith but it wasn’t happening. “Why did you kill all the
people in the village? Why did you hurt Tifa? Answer me, Sephiroth!”
“Mother,
those people are here again,” Sephiroth continued talking to the suit. “Mother,
with your superior powers and knowledge, you should have become ruler of this
planet. But those people,” Zack’s eyebrows rose, “…those useless people. They
took mother’s planet from her hands. But you don’t have to feel sorrow anymore.
Come with me.” Sephiroth raised his hands and gripped the suit before he pulled
it away with his strength and sent it off to the side to reveal a woman’s body
inside the vial. She had long silver hair and one eye with pure pink. “At last
we meet…mother.”
There was a
swish of a blade shooting out. Out of the corner of Sephiroth’s eye, he could
see the large buster sword that once belonged to one of his dearest friend was
now threatening him.
“Sephiroth!
What the hell is wrong with you?” Zack demanded from where he was standing
behind him. First it was Genesis then it was Angeal – was he forever destined
to take down the 1st class SOLDIERs he had once admired and looked
up to?
“You
traitor,” Sephiroth hissed.
“Sephiroth –
I trusted you so much.” Zack took a step back as Sephiroth spun around,
swinging his Masamune toward Zack, a manic look in his green eyes. “No, you are
not the Sephiroth I know!”
“I am the
chosen one!” Sephiroth shouted. “The one chosen to be the ruler of the planet.
This planet, I will take back the planet from you fools and return it to the
hands of the Cetra. That is why I was born!” Sephiroth brought masamune down
toward Zack, causing Zack to bring up his buster sword to break the attack.
The two
swords clashed, sending both men flying skidding backward away from each other
before they straightened up. Sephiroth twisted his sword before he started
running at Zack. Zack swung his sword around and it clashed with the thin blade
before Zack rolled under the swords and ended up on the other side of Sephiroth.
Sephiroth
spun around, swinging his sword forcing Zack to duck under the blade and bring
up his sword as they continued to clash metal against metal. Sweat was
beginning to break out on Zack’s forehead, Sephiroth was a first class SOLDIER,
even Angeal and Genesis had problems defeating him and they were on the same
level as him…what chance did he have?
“You can
join me,” Sephiroth suddenly said. “We could do great things together, bring
the promise land here and show everyone how they are meant to live their
lives…complete and united.”
“I trusted
you!” Zack swung his sword toward Sephiroth. Sephiroth swung his masamune and
it connected with Zack’s front, slicing his shirt and skin. Zack felt himself
flying backward, through the doorway and down the stairs.
Zack let out
a groan when his back hit the banister, his buster sword landing into the
ground a few feet away from him. Zack gritted his teeth as he watched Sephiroth
move back into the room before looking at Tifa who was still lying on the
ground when there was running footsteps and a black gloved hand grab the
buster, yanking it out of the ground and the person ran up the stairs with an
incredible speed, his anger fuelling him on.
Sephiroth
was standing in front of the large vial once more, gazing lovingly at his
mother, his true mother. He placed his hand on the vial, wishing he touch her.
“It’s okay
now, mother,” Sephiroth said with a small smile only to gasp as he slumped
against the vial. Cracks appeared in the thick glass as Sephiroth looked down
to see the blade of the buster sword has pierced his stomach, blood pooling out
of him. “Who is this?” He turned his head slightly to see a Shin-Ra grunt
behind him.
“Give me
back mother, Tifa and the whole village,” the man shoved the blade in deeper.
“I used to respect you, admire you…you bastard!” he yanked the sword out of
Sephiroth and ran back down to where Zack was lying next to the still body of
Tifa. “Tifa!” he pulled the mask off and threw it to the ground before he knelt
down in front of Tifa, picking her up so he could move her over to the wall.
He reached
out and pushed back her hair before stroking her cheek. Tifa’s eyes blinked
opened before they rested on bright blue eyes.
“Cloud…you’re
finally here. You kept your promise,” Tifa whispered. “You came for me when I
was in danger.” Cloud smiled.
“Sorry, I am
a little bit late,” Cloud told her. Tifa smiled as she shook her head.
“Don’t
worry, Cloud,” Tifa whispered. “You came, that’s all that matters.” Cloud leaned
in and kissed her softly.
“I love you
Tifa,” Cloud whispered and Tifa felt tears slip down her cheeks.
“I love you
too, Cloud,” he kissed her once more only to pull away when he heard a noise.
Looking up, he could see a faint shadow on the doorway.
Standing up,
he hurried over to the buster sword and picked it up in time to see Sephiroth
standing in the doorway with Jenova’s head in his hand.
“Cloud…”
Cloud turned to Zack, who had lifted his head weakly and was looking at him.
“Finish him off before he kills everyone else.” Cloud nodded, already promising
that he would bring an end to Sephiroth – he was not going to let Tifa, Zack or
Zack’s girlfriend die at the hands of the madman, not while he still had breath
left in his body.
Cloud
reached the bottom of the stairs, clutching the buster in his hands as he
looked up at the weak body leaning against the doorway.
“Sephiroth!”
Cloud shouted before he ran up the stairs, intending to finish off the man for
once and for all.
Sephiroth
watched as Cloud moved closer before he brought up his masamune and thrusted it
through Cloud’s chest causing the young man to gasp in pain as his right hand
tightened around the handle of the sword, unwilling to let go.
“Foolish
human,” Sephiroth swung them around so that Cloud was now in the room where
Jenova was once held. Cloud just gritted his teeth, dropped the buster and used
his hands to pull him along the thin blade, startling Sephiroth.
“No…impossible…”
Cloud just
punched Sephiroth, sending him off balance and dropped to his knees before he
pulled out the blade with a loud yell. Rising up onto his feet once more, he
looked at Sephiroth, who had regained balance and was looking at Cloud with an
incredulous look on his face.
“Men like
you deserve to die…you do nothing but sit by and watch the whole world suffer
just because you feel that you were born for greatness and think you should own
the world,” Cloud spat out before shaking his head. “I can’t believe that I
used to admire you.”
“You were
smart,” Sephiroth informed him.
“I was
stupid,” Cloud corrected him. “And it’s time to bring that to an end.”
“Don’t you
get it?” Sephiroth asked. “I can never die.” An evil smirk crossed his face.
“And your little girlfriend and Zack will die by my hand along with Zack’s
little Cetra…” Cloud felt his eyes harden over the threat of Tifa, Zack and
Zack’s girlfriend’s death.
“Go to
hell!” Cloud swung the sword and it connected with Sephiroth’s chest, creating
a long thick gash from his right hip to his left shoulder. Sephiroth looked
down at the wound before he looked at Cloud once more only to gasp and his
green eyes widen when he felt Cloud thrust the masamune through Sephiroth’s
chest, where his heart was.
Sephiroth
locked eyes with Cloud’s blue eyes and felt a soft smirk caress his face before
his eyes closed and he fell backward, plunging down into the large gap,
disappearing from Cloud’s view.
Zack lifted
his head when he heard a noise and saw Cloud stumbling toward the stairs before
he fell down, tumbling down the stairs till he landed on his back, his eyes
closed. Zack reached out.
“Cloud…you
did it…” Zack whispered before everything went dark and his head and hand
dropped down to the ground.
Aerith
bolted up in bed, gasping as sweat adored her body causing her brown hair and her
white nightie to stick to her body. Running a shaky hand through her hair, she
looked around the room before closing her eyes, wishing she could get the image
out of her head.
The image of
Zack lying face down on a hard stone floor, a young man with blonde spikes
lying face up on the floor and the young woman with long dark hair sitting
against the wall, all of them looking like they were at death’s door.
