For Doctor Wenham, this was supposed to be a moment of triumph. The moment she watched her latest project destroy the SOLDIER training course. Instead she was fuming in her office trying to work out a solution.
“Cutting MY funding? Haven’t they seen what I’ve created!?” She exclaimed to an empty room. But there was nothing for it. The letter from higher up had stated it clearly. Unless she created something that could actually be used for profit, her funding and her grand scientific career would be down the toilet. A knock on her office door pulled her out of her loop of frustration.
“Surveillance photos from the Wall Market incident, ma’am.” The aide placed the folder on her desk, and disappeared as quickly as they arrived. Wenham grabbed the folder and started switching through the photos. There might have been something useful there.
“…Oh yes. This will do nicely.”

As Cloud slipped back into consciousness, he realized he was strapped down to a surgical table. His head was foggy. Drugged, probably. And vague feelings of déjà vu. Still, he could make out enough. Several doctors, dressed for surgery. The team seemed to be led by a woman, directing her underlings.
As someone noticed he was stirring, they put a mask over his mouth and nose. Noticing the tank it was attached to, he started to hold his breath. He wouldn’t be able to keep it up, but maybe long enough to slip one his hands free. It would have to be his left hand, based on the feeling of the drip going into his right arm. Fine, just keep calm, and work on the escape.
The headset that suddenly obscured his eyes and covered his ears interfered with that plan. He heard a female voice in his ears.
“...and it appears the system is active. Good afternoon, Cloud Strife. Or perhaps Miss Cloud would be more appropriate.”
Cloud was glad they couldn’t see his face, because his expression was one of complete surprise. But the voice continued.
“Those pictures of you in Wall Market gave me an excellent idea. Don Corneo may not be the most discerning sort, but you managed to get his attention. Imagine how you could look with a bit of professional assistance. And of course, we’ll be able to dispel those lies you’ve been spreading about being in SOLDIER as well.”
What the hell is she talking about? Cloud thought, before the electric shock from the headset disrupted his thoughts, as well as his attempt to hold his breath. Quickly the gas started fill his lungs, and he started to feel woozy once again.
“Do you feel that taking effect? It should make you more pliable. And allow us to clean up that complete mess that is your memory. Something a bit more suitable to your role, Miss Cloud. Don’t worry, you won’t remember anything else.”
There was a second, more powerful electrical jolt, and the gas started pumping more heavily. He felt a buzzing from the headset, and his head started to hurt. Images started flashing in front of his eyes, rapid and fast. Images of Nibleheim, images from his memory, images of SOLD- that’s not me.
The thought was sudden, but that was right. He’d never made it into SOLDIER. He got into a position in ShinSec, but that was all. He’d never had the build for it, the musculature. Hell, even the bindings holding his arms in place felt loose, the clothing he was wearing baggy. A mercenary uniform didn’t suit- a girl like me.
Cloud blinked. But no, that was right. The uniform had never suited her. Hell, those years of ‘fitting in’ as a guy, even as a kid. Even that night on the water tower in Nibleheim, saying she was leaving to join SOLDIER. Instead it was an opportunity to start over. And then she got the job at ShinSec. And she was good, but it still didn’t feel right. But there were people in Wall Market who helped.
Sure they did. They were mostly cross dressing for enjoyment rather than people in her situation, but it was a start. And it had helped. Even the girls at the Honey Bee Inn had helped with her makeup, and learning how to make the look work.
And then the injury happened and-
Cloud suddenly screamed in pain. She could barely hear the scientists shouting.
“The subject is rejecting the materia injections! They may not survive the procedure!”
“Subject is having a negative reaction to the memory alteration!”
There was a curse in response from the head scientist. “Damnit, this has to work! Just blast the memories entirely, we’ll try and restructure! Give me that damned hypo!”
Cloud felt a pain in her chest as a large needle was slammed into it, and the device let out a screech and then…
Nothing. Four years of nothing.
That was right. She still didn’t know why she couldn’t remember those years. It was a fragmented blur. There was pain, there was someone else, but she couldn’t remember any of it. What she could remember is several months in recovery, when she was deemed unfit to serve in combat. She was moved to a desk job, and then into the corporate ladder. She felt like a glorified secretary, but there wasn’t anything for it. But at least it gave her the opportunity to stop pretending. The company had been surprisingly supportive with helping her adapt. That was how she got here, undergoing this procedure.
“Miss Strife, can you hear me? Just nod if you can.” She could hear the head doctor’s voice through the headset. She nodded in response. “Excellent. The procedure has just about finished. However, someone from marketing would like a word…”

“So, what have we got?” The photographer asked, as he set up his gear.
“Some no name from the company, but they say she’s got potential. We get paid either way. Anyway, it’s for some new beauty line.” The ad exec looked down at her paperwork. “What I don’t get is the sword.”
The photographer shrugged his shoulders, before looking up. “Hey, here she comes!”
As the door opened, Cloud walked in. Of all the offers she expected, face of a new campaign had not been it. She straightened her purple dress, and entered the room. In the middle of the room, was her old sword, standing vertically. And then she saw the photographer and advertiser, their mouths gaping open.
I guess I’ve still got it. Cloud thought to herself with a smile, and put her hand over the bracelet on her right hand. It had materia sealed in it that were supposed to help the procedure, at least what the doctor said. Still, the combination of yellow and purple set in silver worked well with her look. But looking over at the sword, she got an idea. Cloud walked over to the sword, and leaned against it. It was taller than she was now, and would more than support her weight. Her pose was seductive, her arms grasping the hilt of the blade behind her head, and she gave a seductive smile.
“Well then. Shall we get started?”
---
The shoot had taken a few hours, but it had been spectacular. But there were a few she’d had taken for her own reasons. Cloud almost surprised herself with how confident she’d been, but when the Doctor had mentioned who had just completed SOLDIER training, she wanted them there as a surprise.
Cloud looked at herself, posed seductively behind the Buster Sword, wearing nothing but the bracelet. It didn’t show much, but implied so much. That was exactly the sort of image she’d wanted to give to that new SOLDIER 1st Class.
She was still sitting on the bed when she heard the door behind her open. Cloud smiled as she turned around, and saw SOLDIER 1st Class Tifa Lockhart enter the room. The look on Tifa’s face was worth it and then some. While she may have seen Cloud in the dress before, Tifa hadn’t seen her as she was now.
“Congratulations.” Cloud said, standing up and giving a perfect salute, one Tifa returned almost automatically.
“…Cloud? You look…” Tifa fumbled for the words, but one came to mind quickly. “Beautiful.” Cloud smiled in response, and walked closer.
“And you look like you just put the SOLDIER training course through the ringer.” Cloud walked over and run her hand over Tifa’s bicep. Tifa had always been fit, but now she seemed more built. It sent a tingle down Cloud’s spine.
“What are you doing here?” Tifa asked, still trying to register the situation.
“I’m here to help you celebrate. After all, my childhood friend making her way in the world seems something I should be there for.” Cloud leant over, and gave Tifa a quick peck on the lips. “Now, why don’t we head to the shower and get you out of those sweaty clothes, then start celebrating properly?” Cloud turned around, and walked toward the bathroom, unzipping her dress and letting it fall to the floor.
It was only after a few seconds of admiring the view that Tifa pulled off her shirt, and followed after Cloud.
I never thought this was how things would go, Tifa thought to herself, but I’m not going to complain.

Doctor Wenham sat at her desk, watching her email. While the procedure had been a success, as had been the model shoot, she was still on edge. She had put her future funding and progress on a gamble, and she simply had to wait to see if it paid off. Then her message notification came up.
